Temple Emanuel Restoration Benefit Concert

LA VETA— The Book Nook is changing from winter to summer hours starting April 1st.  Our summer hours at Book Nook in La Veta  will be Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. We are also in need of volunteers to staff our summer Hours. “Oceans of Possibilities” Summer Reading Program. Pick up a ‘take and make’ kit at the La Veta
Public Library, or use the patterns available on our website, or create your own design. Bring
your creations into the La Veta Public Library anytime between now and Friday, May 20 and we will

Fox Theatre weekend movie

WALSENBURG— Join us at the historic Fox Theatre in Walsenburg for our weekend movie “Sonic The Hedgehog 2” After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove that he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.    Movie Showtimes are Friday 7:30 p.m., Saturday 7:30 p.m., and Sunday 3 p.m.

Program on Pilgrimage to Chimayo

HUERFANO—Join us on a virtual tour to the famous sacred site, the Santuario de Chimayo in northern New Mexico. The programs will be held at the La Veta Library on Thursday, April 14 at 2 p.m.  Hosted by Albert Galvan and Sandy Dolak with generous funding from
Colorado Humanities and Colorado Creative Industries.

Patterns and Spaces and Mined Resonance exhibits

WALSENBURG—Please join us to view two new exhibits opening at the Museum of Friends, 600 Main
Street on Friday April 1 We will showcase the work of noted New York Artist Liz Whitney Quisgard Patterns and Spaces on the first floor. On the second floor is the work of local artist Max Kauffman Mined Resonance.  Max will present a new public program on Friday, April 15 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m.  Artist Talk on Art. On Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m. Maria Cocchiarelli will present a gallery tour and discussion of Liz Whitney Quisgard’s exhibit.

Easter egg hunt

LA VETA—Snow Range 4H is hosting an Easter egg hunt and bake sale on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. at  the La Veta Town Park. The hunt begins prmoptly at 10a.m. so come early. There will be different age groups to make sure everyone can particpate and come out a winner.

Decorate your own Ukrainian style egg

LA VETA — Just in time for Easter! On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. The class will be held in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort Museum in La Veta. All supplies will be included in the $25 fee. Space is limited and advance registration is necessary. Easter egg hunt

WALSENBURG— An exciting Easter Egg Hunt for friends and family will be held at Fiesta Park at 928 Russell St, Walsenburg on Saturday, April 16 at 12 p.m.  Children under the age of five will begin their egg hunt at noon and six through 11 year olds at 12:30.

Easter sunrise service

WALSENBURG—New Hope Community Church located at 801 Pennsylvania in Walsenburg will have an Easter morning sunrise service on Sunday, April 17 at 6 a.m. We will be meeting outside on the east side of the church building. Please dress warmly as the mornings ares still chilly. A carry-in breakfast fellowship will follow the sunrise service and all are invited. Regularly scheduled worship at 10 a.m.

HUERFANO—Mt. Rose HeARTworks Outreach and Next 50 Initiative announces that the April Health and Wellness Programs in Huerfano County will be at the La Veta Library on Wednesday, April 20 at 1 p.m.; at the Walsenburg Library on Friday, April 22 at 1 p.m. and in Gardner at La Clinica on Saturday, April 23 at 11 a.m.  Let us help you keep tabs on your basic vital signs and share important health information.  Once again, this month, we will assist you with everything you need to create your own “Vial of Life” information to have available if the need should arise for Emergency Medical People to come to your home.

HUERFANO—Artists! The Spring Show at SPACe is coming up soon. Artwork will be accepted between April 21-23, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. A nominal fee of $5 per entry, with a limit of 4 entries per artist, will be collected to help with gallery overhead. Artwork over 30″ wide is considered as two entries. In addition, a commission of 30% of the selling price will be collected on sold artwork (35% for nonmembers of SPACe) SPACe membership is only $30 annually for individuals. La Veta Library movie matinee

LA VETA—Join us at the LaVeta Library on Thursday, April 21 at 2 p.m. for our monthly movie matinee in the meeting room.  We will be showing “The Way” starring Martin Sheen.  It is a moving and inspirational story of one man’s pilgrimage on “The Way of St James” and the life changing events that he encountered.  For those of you that were able to hear Greg and Leesa’s description of their similar trip, this will be a great follow-up.  Free refreshments, as always.

WALSENBURG—Come join us for St. Mary Catholic Church Bingo Night starting Thursday, April 21at 6 p.m. in Delaney Hall in Walsenburg.  We will have a door prize on opening night.  Doors open at 5p.m. and bingo starts at 6p.m.  We will have raffles for prizes, a concession stand hosted by local vendors, and live entertainment.  Early bird specials will start selling at 5 p.m. and will start when pull-tabs sell out! Each Bingo session will have eight games with a $500 progressive jackpot.  Bring a friend and come have fun! All proceeds will go to St. Mary Church.

Spring Clean Up at Lathrop State Park

HUERFANO— We will meet at the Visitor Center, 70 County Road 502, Walsenburg on Saturday, April 23rd, 10 a.m. Observe Earth Day by helping clean up the paths and shoreline around the lakes and campgrounds. Let’s paint the town! Painting bluebird birdhouses with Amber Huff

LA VETA— Join us to celebrate the official designation of the La Veta Creative District and kick off our first Paint the Town event on Saturday, April 23 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the La Veta School of the Arts (LVSA)! For the first “sip and paint” event, Amber Huff will lead participants to paint bluebird birdhouses. Tickets are $40 and include all art supplies, wine, and light refreshments! No painting experience required. Proceeds will benefit the La Veta Playground Initiative.

Bill Hearne with Don Richmond

LA VETA—Join us at La Veta Mercantile for an evening of music with Bill Hearne and Don Richmond on Saturday, April 23 at 7 p.m. Bill along with his late-wife Bonnie are legends of the early Austin music scene collaborating, recording, and performing with many well-known artists. Bill has won numerous music-industry awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award from New Mexico Music Commission and is an inductee to the Kerrville Folk Festival Hall of Fame. Bill will be performing with Don Richmond, instrumentalist/vocalist for the Rifters.

Introduction to Colcha Embroidery

HUERFANO—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado.  Colcha embroidery has a wonderful history and a revival that will be explored through a series of classes.  Please join Sandy Dolak for an introduction to Colcha on Wednesday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort in La Veta or on Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at the Walsenburg Library.  Come learn and get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form.

3 on 3 Basketball tournament

WALSENBURG— Join us for a 3on3 baskeyball tournament benfiting JMHS mens basketball. The fun begins on Saturday, April 30, with registration at 9 a.m. and continues on through out the weekend at John Mall High School. The divisions are

Writer’s workshop

TRINIDAD—Join us on Saturday afternoons starting this Saturday, April 2 from 1p.m.-2:30p.m. for a facilitated workshop of stimulating writing prompts and exercises, with optional opportunities to read your work aloud. The sole requirements are: a notebook, a writing implement, and your imagination. This is a free event for adults (age 18+) and will run for 12 weeks beginning April 2 and ending July 9. Easter egg hunt and bake sale

AGUILAR—The Ladies Auxiliary will hold a bake sale in the Community Center, on Saturday April 16, at 10 a.m. and then serve free hotdogs and drinks to kids after the Easter Egg Hunt, assisted by the Friends of Aguilar group.
The American Legion Post 42 in Aguilar  will host  the annual Easter egg hunt at the Aguilar Town Park at 12 p.m.   Join the Easter bunny for fun finding eggs with candy, prize baskets, $$ eggs and a pinata challenge starting at noon as well.

Spring Art Festival

TRINIDAD— Come Celebrate the arts at Trinidad State College’s Spring Art’s Festival starting on Wednesday, April 27 and goes through Friday, April 29. Enjoy a plethora of activities including art workshops, artist lectures, a film festival, a talent show, open mic, preformances and a student art show. There will also be the Las Animas County Creative Writing contest award ceremony. All events are free and open to the public. TRINIDAD— Join us for the first annual Youth Art Show for Trinidad on Friday, April 29 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at A.R. Mitchell Museum in Trinidad. Join Advocates Against Domestic Assault in this awarenss and fundraising event on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. in Central Park. Registration fees are $20 per person, $15 for First Responders and $10 for students.

LAS ANIMAS—Las Animas County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presents Cinco de Mayo celebration on Saturday, May 7 from 2 p.m.-10 p.m. at the Southern Colorado Miner’s Memorial 219 W. Main St. next to the Southern Colorado Miner’s Museum. We are celebrating our culture with dance, food, music (we will have a DJ & Band), plus we are having a car show! Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide. Aquatic Easter egg hunt

RATON—Come dunk, dive, swim and splash for over 1000 eggs in the Raton Regional Aquatic Center. This fun Easter event will be on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. The cost to participate is $5 per child and parents are free.

RATON— Join us in celebrating the publication of “Pride & Glory: The Cimarron & Northwestern Railway Company”. This discussion will be help on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30p.m. at the Raton Museum, 108 S. 2nd Street, Raton. This is a new opportunity for those interested in local and regional history to chat with the authors and learn about a little known logging railroad that bore its roots and fueled industry in the northern New Mexico and southern Colorado in the early 20th century. Spanish Peaks Library Storytime

HUERFANO—The next meeting of the Huerfano County Historical Society will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 4 p.m. at the Huerfano Heritage Center, 114 W. 6th St. The meeting will be in person and open to the public. Village Super Powers: Strategies for Expressing Strongly-Held Opinions

HUERFANO — You are invited to a 4H spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Join us on Sunday, April 10 from 11a.m.-2p.m. in the 4H barn at the Huerfano County Fair Grounds in La Veta. Community conversation about tourism

LA VETA—The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, April 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30  p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. We will discuss the ways we work to promote all the activities, attractions, and events that Spanish Peaks Country offers visitors. A light dinner will be provided. Life & Death Round Table Discussions

WALSENBURG—Boies Ortega Funeral Home is  sponsoring a free monthly educational series for 2022 on various topics including grief, end of life decisions, pre planned funerals and later in the year topics such as Medicare vs. Medicaid and Life or Death Insurance.
The next workshop is April 13, 11:00 a.m. on “Pre-Need Funerals.” No one really wants to talk about their own funeral. However, pre-planning your own funeral saves money, family grief and lets you control your legacy and how you want people to remember you when you’re gone.

La Veta Schools Student Art Show

LA VETA—The annual Student Art Show, produced by La Veta Schools art teacher, Amber Huff will be on display at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, beginning with a reception on Wednesday,  April 13, 4:30 to 6 p.m., with refreshments provided by the Boosters. The show will be on display until April 23. The Gallery is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 11 – 2. There is no admission fee, but donations are always gratefully accepted.

LA VETA—Snow Range 4H is hosting an Easter egg hunt and bake sale on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. at  the La Veta Town Park. The hunt begins prmoptly at 10a.m. so come early. There will be different age groups to make sure everyone can particpate and come out a winner.

Decorate your own Ukrainian style egg

Just in time for Easter! On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. The class will be held in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort Museum in La Veta. All supplies will be included in the $25 fee. Space is limited and advance registration is necessary. Hike to the Dinosaur tracks

TRINIDAD — Join the Fishers Peak Outfitters on Sunday, April 10th at 7:30a.m. and again on Saturday, May 14 at 7:30a.m. for this free guided hike to the dinosaur tracks. The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan public meeting

LA VETA—The annual Student Art Show, produced by La Veta Schools art teacher, Amber Huff will be on display at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, beginning with a reception on Wednesday,  April 13, 4:30 – 6 p.m., with refreshments provided by the Boosters. The show will be on display until April 23. WALSENBURG— An exciting Easter Egg Hunt for friends and family will be held at Fiesta Park at 928 Russell St, Walsenburg on Saturday, April 16 at 12p.m.  Children under the age of five will begin their egg hunt at noon and six through 11 year olds at 12:30.

Decorate your own Ukrainian style egg

Just in time for Easter! On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. Artwork will be accepted between April 21-23, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. A nominal fee of $5 per entry, with a limit of 4 entries per artist, will be collected to help with gallery overhead. The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan public meeting

Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. ‘The Bless Me, Ultima’ book and movie discussion -UPDATED

WALSENBURG—The Bless Me, Ultima event at the Spanish Peaks library in Walsenburg has had some changes brought about by the recent storms.  Thursday, March 24 at 2 p.m. we will begin our exploration of the book by Rudolfo Anaya. Ava Archuleta Clark, local herbalist will lead a discussion about the herbs and experiences that Ultima shares in the book. She will share her understanding of the work and gifts of a Curandera.  On Thursday, March 31 at 1 p.m. (note the time change), the Bless Me, Ultima movie will be shown followed by a lively discussion led by Bob Hettenhausen exploring the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.  Please join us the Spanish Peaks Library for these special events.

Two Peaks-One Book – Walsenburg

WALSENBURG— Please join us for a community book read, Two Peaks-One Book Walsenburg. The mission of this program is to foster community dialog & interaction by the reading & discussion of a common book. Our selection is “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, which is a coming-of-age novel centering on Antonio Márez y Luna and his mentorship under his curandera and protector, Ultima. It has become the most widely read and critically acclaimed novel in the Chicano literary canon since its first publication in 1972
We will have free copies available of this novel for you to pick up at SPLD (Walsenburg). A Colorado Humanities grant to Huajatolla Heritage Foundation has made this program possible. Pleas and Petitions’ Author discussion

WALSENBURG—On Saturday, March 26 at 2p.m. the Museum of Friends, 600 Main Street, in Walsenburg will introduce Virginia Sánchez to discuss her most recent book Pleas and Petitions Hispano  Culture and Legislative Conflict in Territorial Colorado that sheds  new light on the political obstacles, cultural conflicts, and  institutional racism experienced by Hispano legislators in the wake of the legal establishment of the Territory of Colorado.  The book reexamines the transformation of some 7,000  Hispano settlers from citizens of New Mexico territory to  citizens of the newly formed Colorado territory, as well as the  effects of territorial legislation on the lives of those residing  in the region as a whole.

Roger Greene’s “4,284 Miles” UPDATED

LA VETA—The author of this year’s  “Two Peaks/One Book” selection, Roger Greene, will join us at the LaVeta Library on Thursday, March 31 at 2 p.m. (Please note the new date!). Mr. Greene will discuss his process and motivation in creating his latest novel chronicling the amazing 1916 bicycle journey of  Joe Bruce and Lester Atkinson, two young boys from Colorado. Village Super Powers: Strategies for Expressing Strongly-Held Opinions

LA VETA— On Saturday, April 9th 2-4 p.m. join us for a village gathering to apply healthy communication skills and explore strategies for expressing strongly-held opinions in ways that result in positive change – even if that change represents compromise.
This is the second part of this two part series.
Using the action plans and information from part one, we will identify common complications that could arise through collaborative efforts. Through exploring our differences, our community can better implement best practices to work through conflicts for the sustainability of our community.

The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan  public meeting

Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide. American Red Cross Disaster Action Team Training

OUR WORLD — Your American Red Cross of Southeastern Colorado is hosting a series of Disaster Action Team Training Academies throughout the area. We are looking to build our teams throughout the Southeastern portion of the state, specifically in and around Pueblo. This training is designed to help build volunteer capacity to respond to local individual disasters like home fires, providing Comfort Kits and Financial Assistance to displaced families in every community.
The 1st Academy will be held Tuesday, March 22, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Pueblo – Location TBD
The 3rd Academy will be held Thursday, March 24,   10 a.m.-4 p.m. This academy will be a virtual session for anyone interested and who could not attend one of the in-person sessions.

Two Peaks-One Book – Walsenburg

WALSENBURG— Please join us for a community book read, Two Peaks-One Book Walsenburg. The mission of this program is to foster community dialog & interaction by the reading & discussion of a common book. Our selection is “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, which is a coming-of-age novel centering on Antonio Márez y Luna and his mentorship under his curandera and protector, Ultima. It has become the most widely read and critically acclaimed novel in the Chicano literary canon since its first publication in 1972
We will have free copies available of this novel for you to pick up at SPLD (Walsenburg). A Colorado Humanities grant to Huajatolla Heritage Foundation has made this program possible. The dates for our discussion sessions are Thursdays, March 17, 24 & 31 at 2 p.m. Stop in and get your copy and let’s make this a great community event!

Roger Greene’s “4,284 Miles”

LA VETA—The author of this year’s  “Two Peaks/One Book” selection, Roger Greene, will join us at the LaVeta Library on Thursday, March 17 at 2 p.m. (Please note the new date!). Mr. Greene will discuss his process and motivation in creating his latest novel chronicling the amazing 1916 bicycle journey of  Joe Bruce and Lester Atkinson, two young boys from Colorado. Spanish Peaks Library Storytime

Pleas and Petitions’ Author discussion

WALSENBURG—On Saturday, March 26 at 2p.m. the Museum of Friends, 600 Main Street, in Walsenburg will introduce Virginia Sánchez to discuss her most recent book Pleas and Petitions Hispano  Culture and Legislative Conflict in Territorial Colorado that sheds  new light on the political obstacles, cultural conflicts, and  institutional racism experienced by Hispano legislators in the wake of the legal establishment of the Territory of Colorado.  The book reexamines the transformation of some 7,000  Hispano settlers from citizens of New Mexico territory to  citizens of the newly formed Colorado territory, as well as the  effects of territorial legislation on the lives of those residing  in the region as a whole.

WALSENBURG— The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, March 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. Spring break youth club

TRINIDAD—The Trinidad Youth Club will be offering an opportunity for Trinidad and local area youth age 5 and under 17 during the spring break time period when local schools are on break.
Starting Monday, March 21, the students will learn how to start an indoor garden and grow the food they can eat within a week with information education from Fungi Family Farm LLC.
They will also learn about indoor and outdoor greenhouse lighting, worms, composting, watering, seed preparation, spouting, harvesting and eating.
Tuesday it’s off to the Raton Regional Aquatic Center for some fun indoor swimming.
Wednesday we are off to Longs Canyon for a walk along the stream among the trees and discover some interesting information about our local pinyon-juniper forest, to learn about the value of trees.
Thursday we travel to Capulin National Volcano Monument and walk on top of a volcano.
Finally, Friday we end the week at Art-o-Cade and discover just how fun it can be to decorate a car and transform it into an art piece!

LA VETA— Join us for the showing of  “Motorcycle Diaries” on Thursday, March 10,  2 p.m. the La Veta Library will kick off their “Two Peaks/One Book series with the showing of the classic movie biopic “Motorcycle Diaries”. Similar in our theme of coming of age and adventure, the movie details  the life changing  motorcycle journey of young Che Guervara and Alberto Granado from Brazil to Peru.  You won’t want to miss this inspiring and inspirational film.

LA VETA—The Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta invites everyone to the opening reception of the new “Outside the Box” show this Saturday, March 12, from 5-7 p.m. The new show is a collection of original art by 17 area artists that embraces the unexpected in a variety of media and styles, “thinking outside the box”. Two Peaks-One Book – Walsenburg

WALSENBURG— Please join us for a community book read, Two Peaks-One Book Walsenburg. The mission of this program is to foster community dialog & interaction by the reading & discussion of a common book. Our selection is “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, which is a coming-of-age novel centering on Antonio Márez y Luna and his mentorship under his curandera and protector, Ultima. It has become the most widely read and critically acclaimed novel in the Chicano literary canon since its first publication in 1972
We will have free copies available of this novel for you to pick up at SPLD (Walsenburg). A Colorado Humanities grant to Huajatolla Heritage Foundation has made this program possible. Trinidad Coalition Brownfield Initiative

TRINIDAD – The Trinidad Brownfield Coalition consisting of Trinidad, Aguilar, and Las Animas County, is hosting a public meeting to share news on the use of a Brownfield Assessment Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This Coalition was first awarded an EPA Brownfield Grant in 2015, and this new round of funding will allow the Coalition to continue revitalizing vacant and underused properties, or brownfields in Trinidad, Aguilar, and throughout Las Animas County. Funding will be used to identify brownfield sites for revitalization, assess existing site conditions, and plan for future cleanup and reuse of priority sites. Interested property owners, community members, and other stakeholders can attend this informational meeting in person or virtually. Information will include an overview of the grant

Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide. LA VETA — Judy Passow, a Huerfano County resident will be sharing her interest and expertise regarding the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years.  Judy has taught throughout the United States (including at the Smithsonian Museum) and in Europe. Her beautiful eggs are on display in many cities, and she enjoys sharing this craft with others.   Judy will share the process and her artful eggs on Thursday, March 3rd at 2p.m. at the La Veta Library. Later in the spring an actual class will be offered! Judy has been so gracious in offering her knowledge to keep this beautiful tradition alive! Come learn and see her stunning eggs on display.  Art in Society grant money is making this program possible!

LA VETA-The first meeting of the La Veta Farmers Market vendors for 2022 will be Tuesday, March 8, 10a.m.-12p.m., on the second floor of the La Veta library on Main St. This will be our 11th year and should be a great one. TRINIDAD — Introductions to the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely own and use a pistol. Bring your own handgun, semiautos or double action revolvers preferred. This class will be held on Saturday, March 5 from 8a.m.-5p.m. at Prator Gun Range. This is a “for credit” class that is a part of Trinidad State’s Junior College NRA Firearm Safety Instructor Certification Program. The regular tuition and fees apply. Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide. LA VETA — LaVeta Public Library is pleased to announce that we will once again be able to offer our” Two Peaks-One Book” community book read event.The mission of this program is to foster community dialog and interaction by the reading and discussion of a common book.  The 2022 selection is “4,284 miles” by Roger L. Greene.  It is a fascinating work of historical  fiction about two young boys who, in 1916,  set out from Colorado Springs on their bicycles for a trip across the country to see the Statue of Liberty.  “4284 Miles” is a wonderful coming of age novel filled with historic information about America in 1916, unforgettable characters, and thought provoking themes of equality, freedom and the cost of liberty. HUERFANO — Judy Passow, a Huerfano County resident will be sharing her interest and expertise regarding the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years.  Judy has taught throughout the United States (including at the Smithsonian Museum) and in Europe. Her beautiful eggs are on display in many cities, and she enjoys sharing this craft with others.   Judy will share the process and her artful eggs on Friday Feb. 25th at 2 PM at the Walsenburg Library; then the program will be repeated on Thursday, March 3rd at 2PM at the La Veta Library. Later in the spring an actual class will be offered! Judy has been so gracious in offering her knowledge to keep this beautiful tradition alive! Come learn and see her stunning eggs on display.  Art in Society grant money is making this program possible!

COLFAX —  In an effort to assist businesses in obtaining the financial resources they need, and to help lenders and financial assistance providers find projects they wish to finance, the New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) is hosting their quarterly finance fair – completely online – geared toward businesses and lenders located in the northeastern part of the state, EDD Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes announced today. The event will take place online Thursday, Feb. 24 from 12–1:30 p.m. Participation for both businesses and lenders is free.

Culebra Range Community Coalition Environmental Scholarship Program

OUR WORLD — The Culebra Range Community Coalition, CRCC, is a local nonprofit whose work focuses mainly on youth, education, and the environment.  The CRCC Environmental Scholarship Program combines all three; youth, education, and the environment. We feel investing in youth and environmental education is an effective strategy for protecting and enhancing the health and beauty of our natural environment. Accordingly, the CRCC Environmental Scholarship Program was started in 2012, awarding two $4,000 college scholarships. Each year since, 3 to 5 more scholarships have been awarded. Through the first nine years of the program we have awarded four-year scholarship to 34 local students.

WALSENBURG — Dustin Stambaugh, Walsenburg City Administrator, and Brad Rice, Walsenburg Parks Manager, have asked La Veta Trails to co-host two clean-up opportunities in Walsenburg this spring. La Veta Trails is thrilled to support these clean-up events.
We will host a Walsenburg Volunteer Sign-up Event in the next two to three weeks. Walsenburg Fox weekend movie

Gardening for Huerfano County

Huerfano Democrats Caucus & Assembly

All That Jazz

LA VETA—Time to get your “jazz” on– the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir is excited to offer its winter concert: “All That Jazz”—featuring a compilation of songs celebrating just the fun of music. Blood drive rescheduled

WALSENBURG —The Blood Drives are sponsored by American Legion Post 16 and will be held at Huerfano Community Center on April 12, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Participants can register online and there is a medical questionnaire to be answered before

Call for artists: Carnegie Library Art Wall

TRINIDAD — The Art Wall at the library has been a bit dormant since the pandemic hit, but with more and more visitors coming to the library, it’s time to remind everyone about this free resource. We have about fifteen linear feet of wall space with a very high ceiling. It’s equipped with a great hanging system. We will provide a custom-designed poster and description cards for the individual pieces. We will also help with promotion via our social media, website and email, and we will notify the local newspapers of your exhibit. Sales are by direct communication between the artist and the buyer. Exhibits are one month long, starting on the first of every month.

State of the City Address Thurs., Feb. 17

TRINIDAD — Phil Rico, Mayor of the City of Trinidad will be giving the annual State of the City address next Thursday, Feb. 17 at Trinidad State Junior College in the Pioneer Room at 6:00 p.m. The public is invited to the event. The mayor will be addressing the city’s 2022 agenda. City council members and the mayor will be taking questions from those in the audience. Virtual Finance Fair

COLFAX —  In an effort to assist businesses in obtaining the financial resources they need, and to help lenders and financial assistance providers find projects they wish to finance, the New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) is hosting their quarterly finance fair – completely online – geared toward businesses and lenders located in the northeastern part of our state, EDD Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes announced today. The event will take place online Thursday, Feb. 24 from 12–1:30 p.m. Participation for both businesses and lenders is free.

2022 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally art work competition

Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide.
