Two Peaks-One Book” community book read event — pick up your book now

LA VETA — LaVeta Public Library is pleased to announce that we will once again be able to offer our” Two Peaks-One Book” community book read event.The mission of this program is to foster community dialog and interaction by the reading and discussion of a common book.  The 2022 selection is “4,284 miles” by Roger L. Greene.  It is a fascinating work of historical  fiction about two young boys who, in 1916,  set out from Colorado Springs on their bicycles for a trip across the country to see the Statue of Liberty.  “4284 Miles” is a wonderful coming of age novel filled with historic information about America in 1916, unforgettable characters, and thought provoking themes of equality, freedom and the cost of liberty. We will have copies available of this novel for you to pick up at LVPL and the full list of the dates and times of the programs we will be offering in conjunction with the book will be announced soon.  Stop in and get your copy and let’s make this a great community event!

Mobile Vaccine Clinic

WALSENBURG —  The mobile vaccine bus will be in town on Thursday, Feb. 24th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  at  the  Safeway parking lot. Pfizer, Moderna, J&J and the flu vaccine will be available. Communications Coalition meeting

Walsenburg Fox weekend movie

WALSENBURG — Death on the Nile will be playing at the historic Fox Theatre. Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. RUNTIME: 2 hours 7 minutes Showtimes are Friday and Saturday,  7:30 p.m.,
Sunday at  3 p.m.  Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for students and teachers, and $5 for children (age five to twelve) and seniors.

eSports & VR Demo Day

WALSENBURG — Join us Friday, Feb. 25 at 2 pm for  free eSports and VR demos! We have six PCs and a Nintendo Switch. We also have two Valve Index’s for VR.
eSports describes the world of competitive, organized video gaming. Competitors from different leagues or teams face off in the same games that are popular with at-home gamers: Fortnite, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Madden NFL, to name a few.

Ukrainian Egg Design
 
HUERFANO — Judy Passow, a Huerfano County resident will be sharing her interest and expertise regarding the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years.  Judy has taught throughout the United States (including at the Smithsonian Museum) and in Europe. Her beautiful eggs are on display in many cities, and she enjoys sharing this craft with others.   Judy will share the process and her artful eggs on Friday Feb. 25th at 2 PM at the Walsenburg Library; then the program will be repeated on Thursday, March 3rd at 2PM at the La Veta Library. Later in the spring an actual class will be offered! Judy has been so gracious in offering her knowledge to keep this beautiful tradition alive! Come learn and see her stunning eggs on display.  Art in Society grant money is making this program possible!

SPLD Gardening 101

WALSENBURG — Spanish Peaks Library will again have their Gardening 101 program this month on Sunday, Feb. 27 from 1 to  3 p.m. at the library, 415 Walsen Ave. We will be discussing how to read seed catalogs, touching on the meaning of number of days and zone requirements, as well what all that strange terminology means.  We will also be exploring tips and practices on starting seeds indoors.

Water Conservancy District meeting

HUERFANO — The monthly board meeting of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District will be held in person at the Walsenburg Housing Authority activity room, 220 Russell St, Walsenburg, CO, on Monday, Feb. 28 at 6pm. Huerfano Republicans Caucus

HUERFANO — Join the Republicans at our precinct caucus Tuesday, March 1 at 7pm.  Odd numbered precincts will meet at the Huerfano Community Church at 601 Leon Ave in Walsenburg.  Even precincts will meet at the Methodist Church on South main in La Veta.  The caucus is the birthplace of both ideas and candidates; a true grassroots start to every election season.  Get in on the ground floor! Huerfano Democrats Caucus & Assembly

HUERFANO — Come together for caucus! The Huerfano County Democrats will hold their caucus at 10  a.m. on Saturday, March 5th with the assembly following  at 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell St. We will hear from local candidates, nominate, conduct unofficial, unrecorded, informational straw polls, we will elect delegates to represent at assembly, select precinct organizers for our newly drawn 5 precincts, and discuss and vote on the party platform.  Sign-ups for election judges will also be accepted. All That Jazz

LA VETA — Time to get your “jazz” on– the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir is excited to offer its winter concert: “All That Jazz”—featuring a compilation of songs celebrating just the fun of music. Tickets will be $10.00 available at the door or online at https://www.lavetatheaterweb.org. Please join us on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30); Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30); and Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m.  (doors open at 1:30). All performances are at the theater located at 127 West Francisco in La Veta. Seating is limited, no reservations required (seating on a first come, first serve basis). Any donations to help support the choir will be gleefully accepted.

Nuevo Americana comes to La Veta

LA VETA — On Saturday, March 5, 7 p.m. enjoy Nuevo Americana music with Chris Arellano at La Veta Mercantile. Arellano’s deeply personal Americana weaves together the Norteño music of his northern New Mexico upbringing with Alternative  Country and Blues influences, for a signature style that he calls Nuevo Americana. Fused with song and story, Spanish and English, his transcendent lyrics move listeners with emotion and passion. Farmers Market meeting

LA VETA-The first meeting of the La Veta Farmers Market vendors for 2022 will be Tuesday, March 8th 10am-12, on the second floor of the La Veta library on Main St. This will be our 11th year and should be a great one. The meeting is open to returning and new vendors and anyone who might be thinking about being a vendor or is just curious. There is no vendor fee and the market usually runs mid-May through mid-Oct in the area next to the La Veta library.

Support for parents in recovery

TRINIDAD — Circle of Parents groups offer a safe, friendly, confidential, non-judgemental, supportive enviroment to share with and learn from other parents. It’s a place where anyone in a parenting role can open celebrate success, address challenges, find information and resources to support raising children. Meetings are every Thursday, beginning Feb. 24th, 6 p.m. at the Youth Club of Trinidad, 204 E. Kansas ave. Kids activities will be available. Wreath making workshop

TRINIDAD — Join us for a fun night of learning how to make your own Spring wreath on Friday, Feb. 25th at 5:30 p.m! We will be working with 12″ wreath frames with spring florals. Annual Polar Plunge
TRINIDAD — Join us Saturday, Feb. 26 for the annual Westerra Credit Union Trinidad Polar Plunge presented by Ford and raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Colorado athletes! The Polar Plunge will be held at Trinidad State Park. Check in is at 10AM and the plunge is between 10:30 AM– 11:30. $75 fundraising minimum for all adults and $50 for students and Special Olympics Colorado athletes. Hosting an in-person Polar Plunge is a responsibility we do not take lightly. County and local COVID regulations will be followed if in place the week of the plunge.

Basic pistol shooting

TRINIDAD — Introductions to the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely own and use a pistol. Bring your own handgun, semiautos or double action revolvers preferred. This class will be held on Saturday, March 5 from 8AM-5PM at Prator Gun Range. This is a “for credit” class that is a part of Trinidad State’s Junior College NRA Firearm Safety Instructor Certification Program. The regular tuition and fees apply. Class fees do not include NRA membership. This course is eligible for VA benefits and financial aid. You must be 21 years or older to take this class.

Virtual finance fair

COLFAX —  In an effort to assist businesses in obtaining the financial resources they need, and to help lenders and financial assistance providers find projects they wish to finance, the New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) is hosting their quarterly finance fair – completely online – geared toward businesses and lenders located in the northeastern part of the state, EDD Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes announced today. The event will take place online Thursday, Feb. 24 from 12–1:30 p.m. Participation for both businesses and lenders is free.

Night sky viewing

2022 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally art work competition

COLFAX—Attention youth artists (7th through 12th grades) in Colfax, Union and Los Alamos counties. We want you to compete by designing this year’s Balloon Rally Logo.  You could win a Hot Air Balloon Ride and see your artwork printed on pins and t-shirts!!!  Deadline to submit is March 10, 2022. Submit your design to Raton Main St office at 145 S. First St. Enteries must include “2022 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon  Rally, Raton NM”. Design must be 5 in. by 5 in., can have up to three colors and must include the student’s name, grade and school. Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide.
