Bless Me, Ultima’ -today

WALSENBURG— On Thursday, March 31 at 1 p.m. (note the time change), the Bless Me, Ultima movie will be shown followed by a lively discussion led by Bob Hettenhausen exploring the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.  Please join us the Spanish Peaks Library for these special events.

Roger Greene’s “4,284 Miles” today

LA VETA—The author of this year’s  “Two Peaks/One Book” selection, Roger Greene, will join us at the La Veta Library on Thursday, March 31 at 2 p.m.   Mr. Greene will discuss his process and motivation in creating his latest novel chronicling the amazing 1916 bicycle journey of  Joe Bruce and Lester Atkinson, two young boys from Colorado. We will then have a spirited round table discussion of the book.  Be sure and bring your copy to be signed by the author. Refreshments provided.

Our Lady of Guadalupe lecture

LA VETA—The La veta Library welcomes educator, lecturer, artist and longtime friend, Becky Myers, on Thursday, March 31 at 2 p.m. in the meeting room.  For this presentation, Becky will share her extensive knowledge, stories and myths about Our Lady of Guadalupe. She will also provide color images and share her retablo collection.  Refreshments will be provided!

Communication Coalition meeting

Spanish Peaks Library Storytime

WALSENBURG— It’s no April Fools, we are having some April Foolishness at the library on Friday.  Please come join us for some fun April Fools stories and activities.  Storytime is every Friday from 10:30 am to 11:30 am at the library and every week we explore new books and activities.  If you have any questions you may contact Ms. Sherry at 738-2774 or sherry@spld.org.

Book Nook hours changing

LA VETA— The Book Nook is changing from winter to summer hours starting April 1st.  Our summer hours at Book Nook in La Veta  will be Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. We are also in need of volunteers to staff our summer Hours. Patterns and Spaces and Mined Resonance exhibits

WALSENBURG—Please join us to view two new exhibits opening at the Museum of Friends, 600 Main
Street on Friday April 1, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. We will celebrate the work of noted New York Artist Liz Whitney Quisgard Patterns and Spaces on the first floor. On the second floor is the work of local artist Max Kauffman Mined Resonance.  Max will be available during the opening to discuss his exhibit and will present a new public program on April 15 th at 2 pm, Artist Talk on Art. On May 7 at 2 p.m. Maria Cocchiarelli will present a gallery tour and discussion of Liz Whitney Quisgard’s exhibit.

LA VETA—The La Veta Mercantile at 300 South Main Street in La Veta is hosting a meet and greet for La Veta Town Board and Mayoral candidates on Friday, April 1, 5p.m.  This a remarkable opportunity to speak to the candidates one on one. Come with your questions and concerns so that you can be an informed voter on Tuesday April 5th.  Everyone is welcome.

Martin Gilmore Trio

WALSENBURG— Join us for a night of music at the La Veta Mercantile with the Martin Gilmore Trio on Saturday, April 2, 7 p.m. The Martin Gilmore Trio (MG3) is a bluegrass and folk music group from Denver, Colorado. Comprised of Martin Gilmore, Nick Amodeo, and Ian Haegele, their sound centers around acoustic bluegrass and folk music, but they stray into jazz, swing, country and blues. They have toured all over the United States and Ireland.

An “Afternoon of Poetry”

Ladies Auxillary breakfast

WALSENBURG—The Walsenburg, Ladies Auxillary # 1187 will be hosting their community breakfast on Sunday, April 3rd from 11a.m.- 1p.m. Please come join us again for breakfast. For our menu this month, we will be serving sausage, egg and cheese on a fluffy biscuit, with potatoes O’Brien. Includes coffee or juice. Hope to see you there. As always, all proceeds we receive goes back into the community.

The Heart of Life

WALSENBURG—Growing older, though mostly blessed and beautiful, often lacks stability when changes, challenges and losses interrupt our journey through the natural aging process. We are taught how to prepare financially for retirement, but rarely how to prepare emotionally. This presentation is great for those who are retired, soon to be retired, or those who want to understand a family member or friend who is struggling with their aging process. Join us on Tuesday, April 5 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Bonnie JW Riley uses over 30 years of experience working with older adults to provide an insightful presentation.

John McEuen at La Veta Mercantile

Huerfano County Historical Society meeting

HUERFANO—The next meeting of the Huerfano County Historical Society will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 4:00p.m. at the Huerfano Heritage Center, 114 W. 6th St. The meeting will be in person and open to the public. Outside the Box

LA VETA—The amazing Outside the Box art show continues at SPACe until April 9. The show is a collection of original art by 17 area artists that embraces the unexpected in a variety of media and styles, “thinking outside the box”. Village Super Powers: Strategies for Expressing Strongly-Held Opinions

LA VETA— On Saturday, April 9, from  2-4 p.m. join us for a village gathering to apply healthy communication skills and explore strategies for expressing strongly-held opinions in ways that result in positive change – even if that change represents compromise.
This is the second part of this two part series, hosted by La Veta Public Library at La Veta Mercantile, 300 S. Main Street.  Refreshments will be provided. Thank you to the American Library Association for their support through the Library Transforming Communities grants.

Easter Cantata

LA VETA—You are invited to the Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble’s presentation of their 2022 Easter Cantata, A JOURNEY TO HOPE, Sunday, April 10, at 2p.m. at the La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S. Main Street, La Veta, CO.  Experience Holy Week through scripture and song based on traditional and familiar spirituals.  Admission is free.  This will be our only presentation this Easter season, so come early to be sure to get a good seat!

Community conversation about tourism

LA VETA—The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, April 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30  p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. We will discuss the ways we work to promote all the activities, attractions, and events that Spanish Peaks Country offers visitors. A light dinner will be provided. Huerfano County Tourism Board conversation will be held at the community center in La Veta. A zoom link will be available for this meeting!

Program on Pilgrimage to Chimayo

HUERFANO—Join us on a virtual tour to the famous sacred site, the Santuario de Chimayo in northern New Mexico. The programs will be held at the Walsenburg library on Tuesday, April 12 at 2p.m. or the La Veta Library on Thursday, April 14 at 2p.m.  Hosted by Albert Galvan and Sandy Dolak with generous funding from
Colorado Humanities and Colorado Creative Industries.

Blood Drive and Post 16 monthly meeting

HUERFANO—American Legion Post 16 is again sponsoring a Blood Drive on Tuesday, April 12th. You may preregister online at Vitalant.org or 1-877-258-4825.
There is a medical questionnaire to be completed before donating. We look forward to seeing you there!
The American Legion Post 16 will also be holding our monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 13 at 6p.m. at the Huerfano Community Center, 928 Russell St. Walsenburg. The Huerfano County Extension Agent will be our speaker.

La Veta Schools Student Art Show

LA VETA—The annual Student Art Show, produced by La Veta Schools art teacher, Amber Huff will be on display at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, beginning with a reception on Wednesday,  April 13, 4:30 – 6 p.m., with refreshments provided by the Boosters. The show will be on display until April 23. The Gallery is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 11 – 2. There is no admission fee, but donations are always gratefully accepted.

Easter egg hunt

WALSENBURG— An exciting Easter Egg Hunt for friends and family will be held at Fiesta Park at 928 Russell St, Walsenburg on Saturday, April 16 at 12p.m.  Children under the age of five will begin their egg hunt at noon and six through 11 year olds at 12:30.

Decorate your own Ukrainian style egg

Just in time for Easter! On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. The class will be held in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort Museum in La Veta. All supplies will be included in the $25 fee. Space is limited and advance registration is necessary. HUERFANO—Artists! The Spring Show at SPACe is coming up soon. Artwork will be accepted between April 21-23, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. A nominal fee of $5 per entry, with a limit of 4 entries per artist, will be collected to help with gallery overhead. Artwork over 30″ wide is considered as two entries. In addition, a commission of 30% of the selling price will be collected on sold artwork (35% for nonmembers of SPACe) SPACe membership is only $30 annually for individuals. Writer’s workshop

TRINIDAD—Join us on Saturday afternoons starting this Saturday, April 2 from 1p.m.-2:30p.m. for a facilitated workshop of stimulating writing prompts and exercises, with optional opportunities to read your work aloud. The sole requirements are: a notebook, a writing implement, and your imagination. This is a free events for adults (age 18+) and will run for 12 weeks beginning April 2 and ending July 9.  Open mic for all literary souls

TRINIDAD—The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce its third event for 2022; the Second Saturday Series will continue on Saturday, April 9, 7 p.m. An Open Mic for poets and all literary souls, the Series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at 210 West Main St. The evening begins  with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan public meeting

TRINIDAD—Celebrate the final phase of the master plan, see design concepts for the park, and share your thoughts on Monday, April 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meeting will include a presentation of design concepts for park facilities and infrastructure maps and data depicting proposed recreation and conservation areas. Question and answer period in an open house format for the public to provide feedback and explore the materials. Information on next steps and finalization of master plan. The project team presentation begins at 5:30, and an open house will follow from 6 to  7. Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide. Book signing

RATON— Join us in celebrating the publication of “Pride & Glory: The Cimarron & Northwestern Railway Company”. This discussion will be help on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30p.m. at the Raton Museum, 108 S. 2nd Street, Raton. This is a new opportunity for those interested in local and regional history to chat with the authors and learn about a little known logging railroad that bore its roots and fueled industry in the northern New Mexico and southern Colorado in the early 20th century. We look forward to seeing you there!
