Grief support group

OUR WORLD—The Grief Support Group sponsored by Mt. Rose Health Center Pallative Care and Hospice for March will be the usual 2nd Wednesday of the month, March 9 from 2-3:30p.m. Val Stepien, long time hospice worker will continue to share her wisdom regarding Loving Yourself in Times of Grief. Phone-in Legal Help

Colorado Legal Service is offering free legal help to the low-income community of Southeast Colorado on Wednesday, March 16 from 5-7:30p.m.Volunteer attorneys are here to help answer civil legal questions, help with court forms, and explain law and procedure for; family law, landlord/tenant law, protection orders,  consumer protection, collections, probate and small claims. Ukrainian Egg Design
 
LA VETA — Judy Passow, a Huerfano County resident will be sharing her interest and expertise regarding the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years.  Judy has taught throughout the United States (including at the Smithsonian Museum) and in Europe. Her beautiful eggs are on display in many cities, and she enjoys sharing this craft with others.   Judy will share the process and her artful eggs on Thursday, March 3rd at 2p.m. at the La Veta Library. Later in the spring an actual class will be offered! Judy has been so gracious in offering her knowledge to keep this beautiful tradition alive! Come learn and see her stunning eggs on display.  Art in Society grant money is making this program possible!

eSports & VR Demo Day

WALSENBURG — Join us on Friday, March 4, 2 p.m. for  free eSports and VR demos! We have six PCs and a Nintendo Switch. We also have two Valve Index’s for VR. eSports describes the world of competitive, organized video gaming. Competitors from different leagues or teams face off in the same games that are popular with at-home gamers: Fortnite, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Madden NFL, to name a few.

All That Jazz

LA VETA — Time to get your “jazz” on– the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir is excited to offer its winter concert: “All That Jazz”—featuring a compilation of songs celebrating just the fun of music. Tickets will be $10.00 available at the door or online at https://www.lavetatheaterweb.org. Please join us on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 7p .m. (doors open at 6:30); Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30); and Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m.  (doors open at 1:30). All performances are at the theater located at 127 West Francisco in La Veta. Seating is limited, no reservations required (seating on a first come, first serve basis). Any donations to help support the choir will be gleefully accepted.

Huerfano Democrats Caucus & Assembly

HUERFANO — Come together for caucus! The Huerfano County Democrats will hold their caucus at 10a.m. on Saturday, March 5th with the assembly following  at 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell St. We will hear from local candidates, nominate, conduct unofficial, unrecorded, informational straw polls, we will elect delegates to represent at assembly, select precinct organizers for our newly drawn 5 precincts, and discuss and vote on the party platform.  Sign-ups for election judges will also be accepted. Nuevo Americana comes to La Veta

LA VETA — On Saturday, March 5, 7 p.m. enjoy Nuevo Americana music with Chris Arellano at La Veta Mercantile. Arellano’s deeply personal Americana weaves together the Norteño music of his northern New Mexico upbringing with Alternative  Country and Blues influences, for a signature style that he calls Nuevo Americana. Fused with song and story, Spanish and English, his transcendent lyrics move listeners with emotion and passion. Walsenburg Eagles Ladies Auxilliary community brunch

WALSENBURG —  The Walsenburg Ladies Auxilliary #1187 will host our community brunch on Sunday, March 6,  from 11a.m.-1p.m. at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main St in Walsenburg.  The cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.  We will be serving a new menu: french toast, ham, and scrambled eggs.  The meal will include coffee or juice.  We hope to see you there!

Farmers Market meeting

LA VETA-The first meeting of the La Veta Farmers Market vendors for 2022 will be Tuesday, March 8, 10a.m.-12p.m., on the second floor of the La Veta library on Main St. This will be our 11th year and should be a great one. The meeting is open to returning and new vendors and anyone who might be thinking about being a vendor or is just curious. There is no vendor fee and the market usually runs mid-May through mid-Oct in the area next to the La Veta library.

American Legion meeting

HUERFANO-American Legion Post 16 will be meeting on Wednesday, March 9, 6p.m. at the Huerfano Community Center at 928 Russell St. Walsenburg. Our guest speaker will be Carlton Croft from the Huerfano County Economic Development and Tourism Board. Also, on our agenda there will be a Post Everlasting in the honor of Bill Shepard a previous member that has passed away recently. A sympathy card will be available to sign.

Two Peaks-One Book” community book read event

LA VETA — La Veta Library is proud to announce that our Two Peaks/ One Book  Community Book Read Series  featuring local author Roger Green will present it’s his first program on Thursday, March 10, 2p.m. in the meeting room at LVPL.  Mr Green will talk about his process and motivation in writing the book and then  you are invited to discuss the many themes explored and get your copy of the novel signed.  Free as always with refreshments provided.

Village Powers: Identifying realistic community goals

HUERFANO—  Please join La Veta Public Library on Saturday, March 12, 2-4p.m. for a village gathering to investigate healthy collaborations by reviewing community strengths and discussing best practices. Our goal is to build ties between community organizations and individuals while organically creating realistic goals for change. This community conversation will provide a safe space to review community needs and action plans to ensure sustainability. Join the La Veta Regional Library District as we work together to provide the community with practical tools to bridge community efforts. This is part one of a two part conversation series. Part two will include efforts to deal with adverse viewpoints and explore strategies for expressing strongly-held opinions in ways that result in positive change – even if that change represents compromise. Refreshments will be provided. Thank you to the American Library Association for their support through the Library Transforming Communities grants.

Two Peaks-One Book Walsenburg

WALSENBURG— Please join us for a community book read, Two Peaks-One Book Walsenburg. The mission of this program is to foster community dialog & interaction by the reading & discussion of a common book. Our selection is “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, which is a coming-of-age novel centering on Antonio Márez y Luna and his mentorship under his curandera and protector, Ultima. It has become the most widely read and critically acclaimed novel in the Chicano literary canon since its first publication in 1972
We will have free copies available of this novel for you to pick up at SPLD (Walsenburg). A Colorado Humanities grant to Huajatolla Heritage Foundation has made this program possible. The dates for our discussion sessions are Thursdays, March 17, 24 & 31 at 2p.m. Stop in & get your copy & let’s make this a great community event!

Blood drive rescheduled

WALSENBURG —The Blood Drives are sponsored by American Legion Post 16 and will be held at Huerfano Community Center on April 12, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Participants can register online and there is a medical questionnaire to be answered before

Basic pistol shooting

TRINIDAD — Introductions to the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely own and use a pistol. Bring your own handgun, semiautos or double action revolvers preferred. This class will be held on Saturday, March 5 from 8a.m.-5p.m. at Prator Gun Range. This is a “for credit” class that is a part of Trinidad State’s Junior College NRA Firearm Safety Instructor Certification Program. The regular tuition and fees apply. Class fees do not include NRA membership. This course is eligible for VA benefits and financial aid. Meet Aguilar’s superintendent finalists

AGUILAR— The Aguilar school board has announced three finalists in their search for a new superintendent: Olivia Bachicha, Justin Cowan, and Victoria Santistevan. The school board will host a Meet & Greet event on Thursday, March 10 from 5 – 7p.m.  in the Aguilar High School Library for the community, school students, and staff to meet and visit with the three candidates.

St. Patricks Day parade

TRINIDAD- The annual Trinidad St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be on Saturday, March 12 at 12p.m.   Come be in the parade or come to watch it, it will be fun!  There is a Parade contest of the most outrages person, group, car or float (think GREEN) in the parade.  $25.00 enter fee   Top prize of $100.00, Judges are local kids from Trinidad. Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD—The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce its third event for 2022; the Second Saturday Series will continue on Saturday, March 12 at 7p.m. An Open Mic for poets and all literary souls, the Series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at 210 West Main St. The evening will begin with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. 2022 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally art work competition

COLFAX—Attention youth artists (7th through 12th grades) in Colfax, Union and Los Alamos counties. We want you to compete by designing this year’s Balloon Rally Logo.  You could win a Hot Air Balloon Ride and see your artwork printed on pins and t-shirts!!!  Deadline to submit is March 10, 2022. Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide.
