Book Nook hours changing

LA VETA— The Book Nook is changing from winter to summer hours starting April 1st.  Our summer hours at Book Nook in La Veta  will be Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. We are also in need of volunteers to staff our summer Hours. Spanish Peaks Library Storytime

WALSENBURG— The Friends of the Spanish Peak Library will be having a book sale this Thursday and Friday, April 7 & 8 in the community room.  We will still have our regular storytime, it will just be in the archive room and we will be reading some yoga books and doing some spring time yoga.  Please come join us for some yoga fun.  Storytime is every Friday from 10:30 am to 11:30 a.m. at 415 Walsen Ave. in Walsenburg.  If you have any questions you may contact Ms. Sherry at 738-2774 or sherry@spld.org.  We have revised our hours at the library.   We are now open M – W from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Th – F from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.  We hope to see you soon.

Fox Theatre weekend movie

WALSENBURG— Join us at the historic Fox Theatre in Walsenburg for our weekend movie “The Lost City”, Rated PG13. Reclusive author Loretta Sage writes about exotic places in her popular adventure novels that feature a handsome cover model named Alan. While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta gets kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire who hopes she can lead him to an ancient city’s lost treasure from her latest story. Huerfano County Historical Society meeting

HUERFANO—The next meeting of the Huerfano County Historical Society will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 4 p.m. at the Huerfano Heritage Center, 114 W. 6th St. The meeting will be in person and open to the public. Our Lady of Guadalupe lecture

LA VETA—The La veta Library welcomes educator, lecturer, artist and longtime friend, Becky Myers, on Thursday, April 7 at 2 p.m. in the meeting room.  For this presentation, Becky will share her extensive knowledge, stories and myths about Our Lady of Guadalupe. She will also provide color images and share her retablo collection.  Refreshments will be provided!

Friends of the Library book sale

WALSENBURG—Join us at Spanish Peaks Library, 401 Walsen, Walsenburg for our Friends of the Library book and bake sale. Thursday and Friday, April 7&8 from 10a.m. – 3 p.m. Thursday is set up, from 8:30 a.m. to 10a.m.. Anyone who can help, we would really appreciate it. See you all there.

Outside the Box

LA VETA—The amazing Outside the Box art show continues at SPACe until April 9. The show is a collection of original art by 17 area artists that embraces the unexpected in a variety of media and styles, “thinking outside the box”. Located at the west end of the La Veta Town Park, 132 W. Ryus, the SPACe Gallery is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 11 am – 2 pm. Village Super Powers: Strategies for Expressing Strongly-Held Opinions

LA VETA— On Saturday, April 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. join us for a village gathering to apply healthy communication skills and explore strategies for expressing strongly-held opinions in ways that result in positive change – even if that change represents compromise.
This is the second part of this two part series, hosted by La Veta Public Library at La Veta Mercantile, 300 S. Main Street.  Refreshments will be provided. Thank you to the American Library Association for their support through the Library Transforming Communities grants.

Paul Robison Band

WALSENBURG—The 2nd Street Bar and Grill would like to invite you to an evening of music with the Paul Robinson Band on Saturday, April 9 at 6p.m. Gritty electric blues and deep grooves will have you dancing this Saturday evening. Easter Cantata

LA VETA—You are invited to the Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble’s presentation of their 2022 Easter Cantata, A JOURNEY TO HOPE, Sunday, April 10, at 2p.m. at the La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S. Main Street, La Veta, CO.  Experience Holy Week through scripture and song based on traditional and familiar spirituals.  Admission is free.  This will be our only presentation this Easter season, so come early to be sure to get a good seat!

Spaghetti dinner

HUERFANO — You are invited to a 4H spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Join us on Sunday, April 10 from 11a.m.-2p.m. in the 4H barn at the Huerfano County Fair Grounds in La Veta. Along with the delisious spaghetti there will aslo be a silent auction to raise funds for the 4H camps. Adult dinners are $10 and kids over 5 years old are $7, under 5 is free.

Community conversation about tourism

LA VETA—The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, April 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30  p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. We will discuss the ways we work to promote all the activities, attractions, and events that Spanish Peaks Country offers visitors. A light dinner will be provided. Huerfano County Tourism Board conversation will be held at the community center in La Veta. A zoom link will be available for this meeting!

Program on Pilgrimage to Chimayo

HUERFANO—Join us on a virtual tour to the famous sacred site, the Santuario de Chimayo in northern New Mexico. The programs will be held at the Walsenburg library on Tuesday, April 12 at 2 p.m. or the La Veta Library on Thursday, April 14 at 2 p.m.  Hosted by Albert Galvan and Sandy Dolak with generous funding from
Colorado Humanities and Colorado Creative Industries.

Blood Drive and Post 16 monthly meeting

HUERFANO—American Legion Post 16 is again sponsoring a blood drive on Tuesday, April 12th. You may preregister online at Vitalant.org or 1-877-258-4825.
There is a medical questionnaire to be completed before donating. We look forward to seeing you there!
The American Legion Post 16 will also be holding our monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 13 at 6 p.m. at the Huerfano Community Center, 928 Russell St. Walsenburg. The Huerfano County Extension Agent will be our speaker.

Life & Death Round Table Discussions

WALSENBURG—Boies Ortega Funeral Home is  sponsoring a free monthly educational series for 2022 on various topics including grief, end of life decisions, pre planned funerals and later in the year topics such as Medicare vs. Medicaid and Life or Death Insurance.
The next workshop is April 13, 11:00 a.m. on “Pre-Need Funerals.” No one really wants to talk about their own funeral. However, pre-planning your own funeral saves money, family grief and lets you control your legacy and how you want people to remember you when you’re gone.
All workshops are held in the community room at Spanish Peaks Library on Walsen Avenue.
Light refreshments will be served.

Drafting an Elevator Pitch

WALSENBURG–    Wednesday, Apr 13, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., at the southern Colorado SBDC. Webinar Via WebEx-Topic: Business Basics. Many professionals develop an elevator pitch, which is a concise and persuasive summary of your skills, background and qualifications and the products that your small business provides. An elevator pitch is a very useful tool in professional setting like networking events, speaking in front of customers, when asking for funding, or looking for investors.
This class will review the basic components of the elevator pitch and help you to create a successful pitch to promote yourself, your business, or your product.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 meeting and membership drive

HUERFANO—The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 16 will meet on Wednesday, April 13th at 11:30 a.m.. If your grandfather, father, husband, brother or sister is/was a Veteran at any time past Pearl Harbor (December 7th, 1941) you are eligible to join the Legion Auxiliary. This applies to Men also! We are doing activities at the Veterans Community Living Center and other details to support the Veterans of Huerfano County. La Veta Schools Student Art Show

LA VETA—The annual Student Art Show, produced by La Veta Schools art teacher, Amber Huff will be on display at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, beginning with a reception on Wednesday,  April 13, 4:30 to 6 p.m., with refreshments provided by the Boosters. The show will be on display until April 23. The Gallery is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 11 – 2. There is no admission fee, but donations are always gratefully accepted.

Patterns and Spaces and Mined Resonance exhibits

WALSENBURG—Please join us to view two new exhibits opening at the Museum of Friends, 600 Main
Street on Friday April 1 We will showcase the work of noted New York Artist Liz Whitney Quisgard Patterns and Spaces on the first floor. On the second floor is the work of local artist Max Kauffman Mined Resonance.  Max will present a new public program on Friday, April 15 at 2 p.m.,  Artist Talk on Art. On Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m. Maria Cocchiarelli will present a gallery tour and discussion of Liz Whitney Quisgard’s exhibit.

Easter egg hunt
LA VETA—Snow Range 4H is hosting an Easter egg hunt and bake sale on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. at  the La Veta Town Park. The hunt begins prmoptly at 10a.m. so come early. There will be different age groups to make sure everyone can particpate and come out a winner.

Decorate your own Ukrainian style egg

Just in time for Easter! On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. The class will be held in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort Museum in La Veta. All supplies will be included in the $25 fee. Space is limited and advance registration is necessary. Easter egg hunt

WALSENBURG— An exciting Easter Egg Hunt for friends and family will be held at Fiesta Park at 928 Russell St, Walsenburg on Saturday, April 16 at 12 p.m.  Children under the age of five will begin their egg hunt at noon and six through 11 year olds at 12:30.

HUERFANO—Artists! The Spring Show at SPACe is coming up soon. Artwork will be accepted between April 21-23, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. A nominal fee of $5 per entry, with a limit of 4 entries per artist, will be collected to help with gallery overhead. Artwork over 30″ wide is considered as two entries. In addition, a commission of 30% of the selling price will be collected on sold artwork (35% for nonmembers of SPACe) SPACe membership is only $30 annually for individuals. Let’s paint the town! Painting bluebird birdhouses with Amber Huff

LA VETA— Join us to celebrate the official designation of the La Veta Creative District and kick off our first Paint the Town event on Saturday, April 23 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the La Veta School of the Arts (LVSA)! For the first “sip and paint” event, Amber Huff will lead participants to paint bluebird birdhouses. Tickets are $40 and include all art supplies, wine, and light refreshments! Bill Hearne with Don Richmond

LA VETA—Join us at La Veta Mercantile for an evening of music with Bill Hearne and Don Richmond on Saturday, April 23 at 7 p.m. Bill along with his late-wife Bonnie are legends of the early Austin music scene collaborating, recording, and performing with many well-known artists. Bill has won numerous music-industry awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award from New Mexico Music Commission and is an inductee to the Kerrville Folk Festival Hall of Fame. Bill will be performing with Don Richmond, instrumentalist/vocalist for the Rifters.

3on3 Basketball tournament

WALSENBURG— Join us for a 3on3 baskeyball tournament benfiting JMHS mens basketball. The fun begins on Saturday, April 30, with registration at 9 a.m. and continues on through out the weekend at John Mall High School. The divisions are

Writer’s workshop

TRINIDAD—Join us on Saturday afternoons starting this Saturday, April 2 from 1p.m.-2:30p.m. for a facilitated workshop of stimulating writing prompts and exercises, with optional opportunities to read your work aloud. The sole requirements are: a notebook, a writing implement, and your imagination. This is a free event for adults (age 18+) and will run for 12 weeks beginning April 2 and ending July 9. Small Acreage Landowner Workshop

Second Saturday Poetry & Prose Open Mic – With Rachel Kellum

TRINIDAD— Join the Corazón de Trinidad Creative District at 210 W. Main St on Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. for the Second Saturday Open Mic for poets and all literary souls. Featuring writer Rachel Kellum, a poet, artist, and former gallery director. Kellum’s passion is to share the joy of poetry, art, and art-making with people of all ages. Her Pushcart-nominated poetry has been featured in several online journals and print collections and has received awards from NFSPS. She leads writing workshops, performs her poetry around Colorado and blogs at wordweeds.com. Her first book, ah, published by Liquid Light Press, was released in 2012. Hike to the Dinosaur tracks

TRINIDAD — Join the Fishers Peak Outfitters on Sunday, April 10th at 7:30a.m. and again on Saturday, May 14 at 7:30a.m. for this free guided hike to the dinosaur tracks. This will be an 11 mile hike, 5.5 miles to the tracks then back out of the canyon. We ask that you please leave your pets at home as it is rattle snake season. We will meet at Fishers Peak Outfitters in Trinidad then carpool to the trail head approx 1.5 hours away. Please bring plenty of water and apporpriate attire. Expect to see amazing scenery, wildlife, First nations people’s petroglyphs, hispanic settler’s church site and of course the largest deposit of dinosaur tracks in North America. The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan public meeting

TRINIDAD—Celebrate the final phase of the master plan, see design concepts for the park, and share your thoughts on Monday, April 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meeting will include a presentation of design concepts for park facilities and infrastructure maps and data depicting proposed recreation and conservation areas. Question and answer period in an open house format for the public to provide feedback and explore the materials. Information on next steps and finalization of master plan. The project team presentation begins at 5:30, and an open house will follow from 6 to 7. This meeting will be held at the Pioneer Room in the Sullivan Student Center | Park Street.

Trail building workshop

TRINIDAD—Join Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado for a two-day trail building/maintenance workshop on Wednesday, April 13 at 9 a.m. and Thursday, April 14 at 8 a.m. at Carpios Cove located in the Trinidad State Park. Easter egg hunt and bake sale

AGUILAR—The American Legion Post 42 in Aguilar  will host  the annual Easter egg hunt at the Aguilar Town Park at on Saturday, April 16 starting at 10 a.m and the hunt begins at noon. Join the Easter bunny for fun finding eggs with candy, prize baskets, $$ eggs and a pinata challenge. The Ladies Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale in the Community Center and then serve free hotdogs and drinks to kids assisted by the Friends of Aguilar group.  All funds raised or donated are used to assist or honor Veterans & their families.

420 vendor fair at The Brickyard

TRINIDAD— Celebrate with us at Freedom Road at our Brickyard location- 2600 Freedom Road, on Saturday, April 16 from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. There will be live musc for Local Extract and free pizza from Sexy Pizza. TRINIDAD — Mark your Calendars for the 9Health Fair on Saturday, April 23 from 7:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at Mt San Rafeal Hospital. Several low cost screenings will be available as well as free blood pressure, body & balance, height/weight, skin screenings and stress management. TRINIDAD—This elegant evening of dining, dancing, auctions and more is Noah’s Ark biggest annual fundraiser. Held on Saturday, April 23 from 5 p.m.-10:30 p.m. at A.R. Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide. Aquatic Easter egg hunt

RATON—Come dunk, dive, swim and splash for over 1000 eggs in the Raton Regional Aquatic Center. This fun Easter event will be on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. The cost to participate is $5 per child and parents are free.

RATON— Join us in celebrating the publication of “Pride & Glory: The Cimarron & Northwestern Railway Company”. This discussion will be help on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30p.m. at the Raton Museum, 108 S. 2nd Street, Raton. This is a new opportunity for those interested in local and regional history to chat with the authors and learn about a little known logging railroad that bore its roots and fueled industry in the northern New Mexico and southern Colorado in the early 20th century.
