Weekend movie

WALSENBURG—The historic Fox Theatre’s weekend movie is “Top Gun: Maverick,” rated PG-13 with a run time of 2 hours and 11 minutes. After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it. Colorado native bees talk

WALSENBURG—Join us Friday, June 10 at 8 p.m. in the amphitheater at Lathrop State Park for Ryan Bartlett, founder of Colorado Native Bee. Ryan will give a solid, basic background on the almost 1000 species of Colorado native bees. We’ll learn how to differentiate between different types of bees and bumblebees and how to encourage bees to inhabit gardens and other outdoor spaces. As a naturalist, Ryan works to educate adults and youth about the importance of native plants and native pollinator conservation. For more info, contact Lathrop Park at 719-738-2376. LA VETA— Many of you had wished for a Saturday class, so in honoring those needs Sandy Dolak will be offering a Colcha Embroidery Class on Saturday, June 11, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the Francisco Fort Museum Capps Building (115 W.Francisco). We will break from noon to 1 for lunch and/or enjoying a free tour of our wonderful museum. In the morning, it will be mostly a repeat of our introduction to Colcha Embroidery Class and beginning stitchery. In the afternoon, we will have show and tell and explore the many options for your ongoing work. We will be joined by one of my favorite Colcheras from San Luis, Donna Hernandez. Junior Rangers- safety program

WALSENBURG—Junior Rangers (youth of all ages) come on over to the swim beach at Lathrop State Park this Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m. for State Trooper Brandon Kuretich’s Bicycle, Vehicle and Pedestrian Safety program. Earn your Junior Ranger badge while becoming even wiser walkers, passengers in cars and bike riders in natural, outdoor settings like state parks and in areas where you live. This program is free. Firebreak Community Kickoff

CUCHARA— Join us on Saturday, June 11, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for the SPAWP Highway 12 Firebreak Community Kickoff. Join us at the Cuchara Community Event Center as the Spanish Peaks Alliance for Wildfire Protection joins forces with the Colorado State Forest Service to inform the community and invite everyone to participate in the mitigation projection along Highway 12. The goal is to mitigate 150 feet on either side of the highway to create a shaded fuel brake. There is a grant associated and funds are available to help.

Gardner Development Project

GARDNER—There are so many things developing in Gardner these days! This Saturday, June 11 from 12 – 5 p.m., there will be an event featuring Architect Electra Johnson at the Raymond Aguirre Community Center in Gardner. The Gardner Main St. Board hosts the event and they need our help getting the word out to friends and family, neighbors, and all our cousins.

Eagles celebrating 38th anniversary

WALSENBURG — The Walsenburg Fraternal Order of Eagles #1187 will be celebrating their 38th anniversary on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the Eagles Hall 614 Main St in Walsenburg. The meeting starts at 2 p.m, with a dinner and dance to follow. The dinner will be an old fashioned barbeque, prepared by the aerie’s men.

Snakes! A fun and educational program

WALSENBURG—Come learn about Snakes, especially rattlesnakes and bull snakes, at Lathrop State Park. Join us Saturday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the amphitheater. Colorado is home to a variety of snakes, and two of them look a lot alike. Bull snakes are often confused with rattlesnakes, but bull snakes can’t hurt you as they are non venomous. Both play an important part in nature. Join local naturalist, Bob Kennemer, as he teaches you how to tell the difference between these two reptiles. Bob will also share precautions you take to avoid getting bit by a rattler and what to do if you get bit. More importantly, he will teach you what not to do, should you or someone you know gets bitten. Snake legends, lore, and plain old “bull” will also be covered. This program ranges from wildly funny to seriously educational, with an opportunity to handle live non venomous snakes. Outdoor movie: A League of Their Own

WALSENBURG— The outdoor movie on Saturday, June 11, is hosted by our historic Fox Theatre Walsenburg at the Walsenburg Golf Course. Admission is free and popcorn, snacks, or a drink from the bar will also be available for purchase. Please arrive at 7 p.m. to pick a seat. The movie start time is roughly 8 p.m.. You access the golf course via Lathrop State Park entrance but no park pass is required. Stay to the right and follow the signs to the golf course. Or take Second Street out from Walsenburg and follow the dirt road to the clubhouse.
This weekend’s movie is “ A League of Their Own” As America’s stock of athletic young men is depleted during World War II, a professional all-female baseball league springs up in the Midwest, funded by publicity-hungry candy maker Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall). Competitive sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) spar with each other, scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) and grumpy has-been coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) on their way to fame. Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell co-star as two of the sisters’ teammates.

Susan Gibson

LA VETA—Singer-songwriter Susan Gibson will take the stage at Deerprint Wine bar in La Veta on Sunday, June 12, 4-6 p.m. Susan Gibson was born in Fridley, Minnesota, and is a Wimberley, Texas-based singer and songwriter who has released six solo albums and tours the nation. Gibson was the lead singer for the alternative country band, The Groobees, and is the writer of the Dixie Chicks hit “Wide Open Spaces”. Gibson continues to affirm her place on the list of troubadour songwriters who have an innate need to affect the lives of their fellow humans through song. Francisco Fort Closed Week of June 13th

LA VETA— The Plaza at Francisco Fort Museum, 306 South Main Street, La Veta, CO 81055 will be graded this week and dry wells will be placed so that the adobe walls and structure of the Fort will continue to be preserved. This was to be done last fall but with Covid and supply chain issues the work could not be scheduled until this summer. The Fort will open as soon as possible after the work is completed. Expressionist Pastels at LVSA

Experimental Drawing & Painting at the La Veta School of the Arts

Life Along the Santa Fe Trail

TRINIDAD— This Saturday, June 11 at 7 p. m. Join us at the Ampitheater in Trinidad Lake State Park for the presentation on Life Along the Santa Fe Trail. Trinidad was founded on the Santa Fe Trail, a wagon road used by merchants traveling between New Mexico and Missouri in 1821-1880. Al Melton, the Museum Director of History Colorado’s Trinidad History Museum, will talk about the Trail and Trinidad using a trunk filled with touchable objects for a hands-on experience. During this program, we will learn about the challenges of traveling the trail, what daily life was like on the trail, who used the trail, and why they risked so much to do so.

Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD—The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce its upcoming event; the Second Saturday Series will continue this Saturday, June 11 at 7 p.m. An open mic for poets and all literary souls, the Series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at Mutiny Information Café, 135 East Main St. The evening begins with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. Guided hike

TRINIDAD—Join Volunteer Park Interpreter, Sydnee Waller on the Levsa Trail on Sunday, June 12 at 9 a.m .This leisurely hike will explore the wonders of the pinion-juniper woodland ecosystem, some local history, and the beginnings of Trinidad Lake. TRINIDAD— Join us at the Trinidad Carnegie Public library on Tuesday, June 14 at 1 p.m. for Chalk the Walk. Learn different art techniques while creating a sidewalk mural in front of the library. The theme will be based on Oceans of Possibilities and is for grades K-5. This program will be taught by Julie McDaniel. TRINIDAD— Kids ages 8-12 join us at the Carnegie Public Library in Trinidad in building skills of emotional intelligence, anger management, calming techniques and anti- bullying concepts. Health Solutions is hosting this free group with curriculum following “Seeing Red” by Jennifer Simmonds. Beginning Wednesday, June 8 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. and held every Wednesday over the summer. Santa Fe Trail Rendezvous

COLFAX— The annual Santa Fe Trail Rendezvous is being held Saturday, June 11 through Sunday, June 19 at the Whittington Center in Coal Canyon. Hundreds of re-enactors participate in a living-history rendezvous of pre-1840’s clad mountain men with a black-powder shoot, hatchet throw, and teepee village. A Santa Fe Trail reenactment with Native Americans, Spaniards and mountain men is held on Saturday. It’s the largest gathering of its kind in New Mexico.
The eight-day event stretches from the 2nd to 3rd Sunday every June, since 1975. There is also a one day-tour of the Santa Fe Trail ruts on NRA property leading to the Clifton House.

Moonlight Hike

CAPULIN— Take a ranger guided hike at Capulin Volcano under the full, or nearly full, moon on Saturday, June 11 at 8:30 p.m. Subjects include night time biology, lunar geography, astronomy, and the park after dark. Come and experience the top of Capulin Volcano in a new light! Wear warm clothing and layers as the weather may be chilly. Meet at the visitor center before heading up the volcano. WALSENBURG— There will be a water and land safety program in the Amphitheater in Lathrop State Park on Saturday, June 4, 7 p.m. Join Ranger Spencer and Trooper Brandon to learn more about water and land safety here at Lathrop Park and for all your summertime activities. Fun family walk/run/bike event

WALSENBURG—Lathrop State Park and La Veta Trails are hosting a Fun Family Walk/Run/Bike on the Cuerno Verde Trail to celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 4, 9 -11 a.m.. This fun walk/run/bike is a great way to celebrate National Trails Day and Lathrop State Park. The Cuerno Verde Trail is a 3-mile concrete trail that is wide, and easy with no incline, so it is stroller- and wheel-chair friendly and suitable for all ages and abilities. There will be a scavenger hunt checklist so children and Junior Rangers can find things on the trail.
To make this event even better, CPW is inviting resident and nonresident anglers of all ages to participate in its annual Free Fishing Weekend on June 4th and 5th. The free fishing weekend is a great way to get outside with family and friends. Please join members of La Veta’s Park & Tree Board this Friday, May 27 at 10 a.m. in front of La Veta Village at 109 E. Francisco St in La Veta for the planting of the Town’s Arbor Day tree. Keith Hauber, retired arborist, will be conducting a short educational session about proper tree planting and maintenance during and after the tree planting. Ribbon cutting for Highway of Legends

WALSENBURG/ TRINIDAD— Please mark your calendars for Friday, May 27, at 1 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Country Welcome Center, 400 Main Street in Walsenburg, to join your fellow citizens at an official ribbon cutting to celebrate the designation of the Scenic Highway of Legends (SHOL) as an official America’s Scenic Byway. A similar event will take place the same day at the Trinidad Welcome Center at 11 a.m. refreshments will be served.
This federal designation was awarded last year but due to concerns related to Covid, we have waited until 2022 to celebrate. The designation will bring SHOL broader recognition and esteem, along with increased visitation.”

Honoring our cultures: Internationally acclaimed performers

HUERFANO—Shelley Morningsong and Fabian Fontenelle from Zuni New Mexico are returning for performance events Memorial Day Weekend. Shelley won the prestigious Native American Music Industries’ Artist of the Year award in 2019. Fabian recently won the men’s northern traditional, golden age category at the 2022 Denver March Pow Wow. They will greet their many friends and present mini performances at the Francisco Fort Museum Opening Day Saturday, May 28, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. On Sunday, May 29, they will do a full performance concert at the Fox Theatre in Walsenburg at 1 p.m. The Honoring our Cultures concert will also include folkloric dancing by the beautiful and talented Tiana Camacho.

Artist’s Choice Show at SPACe Gallery

Reception for Artists Choice Show. Everyone is invited to the opening reception for the Artists’ Choice show at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. In addition to 13 area artists showing a variety of styles, media, and subjects, photographer Ted Shafer is sharing a collection of photographs of historic religious structures from throughout the Southwest. WALSENBURG — Join naturalist Edie Flanagin Sunday, May 29 at 10 a.m. for a fun nature and wildflower hike. If you love identifying what you find with your smartphone, Edie will also be teaching us how to use the iNaturalist app (free for both iPhones and Androids). Closest parking is the Horseshoe Lake Dam Parking Area. Hop on the cement trail between Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake and head south on foot to the bird viewing area. It is suggested to wear hiking shoes and bring plenty of water and your smartphone with the iNaturalist app downloaded. Bosque Redondo exhibit opening

New Mexico Historic Sites commemorates the grand opening of “Bosque Redondo: A Place of Suffering…A Place of Survival,” on Saturday, May 28. The grand opening will run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; the site will remain open until 5 p.m. A permanent exhibition designed in collaboration with tribal partners that grapples with the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation, the U.S. army’s forced removal of Diné (Navajo) and Ndé (Mescalero Apache) people from their homes, and the brutality and perseverance of their life on the reservation. There will be a variety of speakers, catered lunch for the first 500 visitors, a Native American art and rug auction hosted by R.B. Burnham & Company, and Native dancers.

COLFAX—Saturday, June 11-19 at Whitting Center in Coal Canyon is the annual Santa Fe Trail Rendezvous. Hundreds of re-enactors participate in a living-history rendezvous of pre-1840’s clad mountain men with a black-powder shoot, hatchet throw, and teepee village. A Santa Fe Trail reenactment with Indians, Spaniards and mountain men is held on Saturday. It’s the largest gathering of its kind in New Mexico. The eight-day event stretches from the 2nd to 3rd Sunday every June, since 1975. One day-tour of SFT ruts on NRA property leading to Clifton House. The Cuerno Verde Trail is a 3-mile concrete trail that is wide, and easy with no incline, so it is stroller- and wheel-chair friendly and suitable for all ages and abilities. There will be a scavenger hunt checklist so children and Junior Rangers can find things on the trail.

COLFAX—Saturday, May 21 at 9 a.m. is the Coal Camp walking tour starting at the visitor center. Join a ranger and explore on this 2.5 hour walk. Bring water and dress for te weather. At 8 p.m. join us at the Soda Pocket Amphitheater and discover how to live and let live with bears and cougars. Following at 9 p.m.is our Reach for the Stars presentation. Meet the Lion, the Strong Man and the Big Bear in the night sky.
Saturday, May 28 at 9 a.m. we’re hosting Coffee with a Ranger. Come talk wildlife with a ranger while enjoying coffee and donuts. At 7 p.m. join us at the Soda Pocket Amphitheater for “Sugarite Rocks”. We’ll be discussing the areas rich history in coal, dinosaurs, volcanos, killer space rocks and more.

Relay for Life luminaria bag decorating

OUR WORLD—Join us at one of our decorating nights to decorate a luminaria bag(s). Enjoy pizza, pop and water on us. You can bring your own things or pictures to decorate them or some things will be provided for you. Our big event is Saturday, August 6th and we want to line the walking track with lots of luminaria bags honoring loved ones. Each bag is $5. If you can’t come to one of our decorating nights and would still like a bag you can stop by Corradino’s in Trinidad or Farm Bureau in Walsenburg to decorate them at your leisure. Beginning T’ai Chi classes

LA VETA—Often referred to as “the gentle art of yielding”, the ancient, slow moving Chinese practice of T’ai Chi Chuan is also healing in many ways. La Veta cheer camp

LA VETA—The La Veta High School cheerleaders are hosting a cheer camp Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th. Registration begins at 8am on Friday the 13th. The camp will be held from 9:00am-12:00pm both days at the Roger Brunelli Gym. Grades Pre K – 5th Grade are welcome! Participants will learn a performance routine including dance, cheers, chants, stunts, tumbling, jumps, and kicks. At the conclusion of the camp participants will perform their routine to friends and family starting at 12:10PM on Saturday. The registration form and payment of $30 will be due upon arrival to camp. End of life decisions and Hospice

WALSENBURG—Sangre de Cristo Hospice joins Elisa in reviewing the options of what to plan for regarding end-of-life decisions. You don’t have to be in hospice care to plan what to do or how someone will honor your decisions when you can’t make them for yourself any longer. You will walk away with hand outs and tools to prepare you for difficult decisions to come. End of Life, Hospice and Palliative Care on Thursday, May 12th, 11 a.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg and is free to attend. Hospice staff will be there to educate people on what to prepare for and do before end of life occurs.

LA VETA—Tony Masinton will talk about what has happened so far to restore the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris three years after the devastating fire. Find out how bad the damage was and the steps an army of craftspeople and scientists are taking now to return the world heritage site to its former glory. Tony holds a PhD in medieval church architecture and spent over a decade working on ancient churches and cathedrals in Europe. This discussion will be held at La Veta Public Library on Thursday, May 12, 2-4 p.m.

Chimayo Presentation-UPDATED

WALSENBURG—The Chimayo Presentation at the Walsenburg Library that was cancelled by the weather last month has been rescheduled for Monday, May 16 at the Walsenburg Library. During Holy Week, tens of thousands of pilgrims make the annual journey to Chimayo, New Mexico, and to its famous sacred site, the Santuario de Chimayo. Chimayo is one of the spiritual centers of the region and the destination of the most popular pilgrimage in North America. The roads to Chimayo course through mountain villages where Hispanic Catholicism has been cradled for more than two centuries, but Chimayo, as well, is a special place for all who quest to find divinity and to encounter the sacred within themselves. Hike to the Dinosaur tracks

Scenic Highway of Legends Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

RATON— The Arthur Johnson Memorial Library will be hosting medical professionals from Premier Medical Group USA – New Mexico for a second Pop Up Vaccination Event on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.. in the meeting room. Bird walk at Capulin Volcano

CAPULIN— Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by coming to an early morning bird walk with a ranger! Saturday May 14 from 7-8:30 a.m. Meet at the visitor center for a peek at the birds that call the lower areas of the volcano home and then head to the top of the volcano to see what birds you can spot from a higher elevation. Bring your own binoculars and water; bird lists and viewing books will be provided.

Moonlight Hike

CAPULIN— Take a ranger guided hike at Capulin Volcano under the full or nearly full moon on Saturday, May 14 at 8 p.m. Subjects include night time biology, lunar geography, astronomy, and the park after dark. Come and experience the top of Capulin Volcano in a new light! Wear warm clothing and layers as the weather may be chilly. Meet at the visitor center before heading up the volcano. CAPULIN— Come and enjoy the amazing night sky at Capulin Volcano and experience a total lunar eclipse! Also known as a blood moon, total lunar eclipses occur when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon. Join Capulin Rangers to experience this amazing event! We’ll have the telescopes out to get a closer look. Sunday May 15 from 8:30 -11:30 p.m.. Partial Eclipse starts at 8:27pm. Full Eclipse starts at 9:29pm with a Maximum Eclipse at 10:11pm. The Chief Bicycle & Comedy Festival

OUR WORLD — Presented by Bigtop Studios, the Chief Bicycle & Comedy Festival returns for its third year, and in 2022 we’re taking this festival across the border with shows in Trinidad, Colorado and Raton, New Mexico. Performances will take place in Trinidad from 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th, and in Raton during the day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 7th. This year’s festival will feature headliners: Emma Arnold on Friday, May 6th, Eddie Pepitone on Saturday, May 7th, hosted by Sam Tallent and Nathan Lund.

King Solomon’s Mines?

LA VETA—The LaVeta Library is delighted to welcome David Steffan on Thursday, May 5, at 2 p.m. as he presents a fascinating recount of his experiences on the 2020 Tel Aviv University archeological dig at Timma Valley in Jerusalem. Exciting information about evidence of copper mines dating back to the time of King David and King Solomon (10th century BC) prompted the Smithsonian to feature this on the cover of their magazine and chose it as #1 on their list of top 10 science articles in 2021. WALSENBURG—STEAM class will be held at Museum of Friends on Friday, May 6, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Join us every Friday starting this friday at MoF and continueing all summer. STEAM is the focus Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math Projects explore how science, art and math intersect with technology. Students are encouraged to bring their lap tops or I Pads as we create 2 and 3 dimensional art projects while we look at the art of Leonardo da Vinci up to present day artists who were both scientists and artists. LA VETA—Often referred to as “the gentle art of yielding”, the ancient, slow moving Chinese practice of T’ai Chi Chuan is also healing in many ways. School Nature Trail Work Session

LA VETA—Our work session on Friday, April 29th got blown away by gusty winds. This message lets you know that we rescheduled the work at the School Nature Trail for Monday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The wooden sign frames, kiosks, and bridge need to be sanded and a new coat of stain applied.
All volunteers should pack a water bottle, wear old sturdy clothes, and note long pants, and work boots, are required. Eye protection is recommended, as are sunscreen, and work gloves.
The minimum age requirement for this workday is age 16. Younger children must be accompanied by a parent.
If we have to cancel for hazardous weather or any other reason, we will email you or call no later than 9 a.m. on the morning of the workday.

Conversation about tourism

LA VETA—The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, May 9 at 6 p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. We will discuss the ways we work to promote all the activities, attractions, and events that Spanish Peaks Country offers visitors. A light dinner will be provided. Huerfano County Tourism Board conversation will be held at the community center in La Veta. A zoom link will be available for this meeting.

Great Coral Reef crochet project

LA VETA— Have you heard about the great coral reef that is growing in La Veta? Stephine Masinton, the Children’s Librarian at the La Veta Public Library has this great summer program that will also be an art installation of a coral reef created by local crocheters. Sandy Dolak offered to help with this project by facilitating a group on Tuesday, May 10 at 1 p.m. at the library dubbed (NOT) Crocheting like a Granny. We will work together on the basic crochet skills to contribute to the reef (or to make hats and afghans for all the world). A kit will be provided with yarn and a crochet hook, and we will work together on creating pieces for the reef. If you are already working on pieces, please consider joining us and share what you have done.

WALSENBURG—Boies Ortega Funeral Home is sponsoring a free monthly educational series for 2022 on various topics including grief, end of life decisions, pre planned funerals and later in the year topics such as Medicare vs. Medicaid and Life or Death Insurance.
The next workshop is May 11, 11:00 a.m. on “End of Life Decisions and Hospice” Sangre de Cristo Hospice joins Elisa in reviewing the options of what to plan for regarding end-of-life decisions. You don’t have to be in hospice care to plan what to do or how someone will honor your decisions when you can’t make them for yourself any longer. You will walk away with hand outs and tools to prepare you for difficult decisions to come in the future.
All workshops are held in the community room at Spanish Peaks Library on Walsen Avenue.

LA VETA—Once again, from new perspectives, Bless Me, Ultima by Rodolfo Anaya will be explored at the La Veta Library. A second offering in the series will be Wednesday, May 11 at 2 p.m. with the showing of the movie hosted by Bob Hettenhausen. He will lead an interesting discussion comparing the book to the movie. WALSENBURG—Veteran counseling services is coming to Huerfano County on May 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 pm. at the Spanish Peaks Veteran Community Living Center east parking lot.
Mobile Vet Center is a large mobile vehicle with space for confidential counseling and are used to provide outreach to eligible military veteran individuals in communities that are distant from existing services. Readjustment counseling is a wide range of psycho social services offered to eligible Veterans and their families. They include:
• Individual and group counseling for Veterans, Service members, and their families
• Family counseling for military related issues
• Bereavement counseling for families who experience an active duty death
• Military sexual trauma counseling and referral
• Substance abuse assessment and referral
• VBA benefits explanation and referral
• Screening & referral for medical issues including TBI, depression, etc.
If you, or a family member, served in any combat zone and received a military campaign ribbon (Korea, Vietnam, Southwest Asia, OEF, OIF, etc.) then both you and your family are eligible for Vet Center services.

HUERFANO—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado. Colcha embroidery has a wonderful history and a revival that will be explored through a series of classes. Come learn and get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form.

Summer hours for Walsenburg Mining Museum at the Old Jail House

WALSENBURG—If the dog-days of summer begin to weigh you down and the kids are more than you care to handle, you might consider taking them to jail. We’re recommending the old county jail, home of the Walsenburg Mining Museum of course. The museum located behind the courthouse at 112 W. 5th Street A is opening for summer hours starting May 2nd.
The old jail built in 1896 served the county well for many years before it was repurposed as the new home of the Walsenburg Mining Museum in 1994. WMM is operated entirely by dedicated volunteers, who will be waiting to share a local historical experience. Summer hours are Mon-Tues-Fri 10:00-4:00 and Saturday 10:00-2:00. When you arrive don’t forget to greet our Mr. Miner statue and pay your respects to our miners list engraved on the base.

TRINIDAD — Applications are open for Mile High Youth Corps’ (MHYC) Land Conservation Summer of Service program. MHYC is searching for positive, hardworking individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 to spend 12-14 weeks this summer working on environmental stewardship projects near Trinidad.
During their summer of service, crews will complete more than 30 conservation projects spanning 23 counties and make profound impact on the community, the environment, and themselves.
Mile High Youth Corps’ Land Conservation Program is rooted in the tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and is devoted to the improvement and sustainable development of our two most important resources – youth and the environment. Youth participants, called Corpsmembers, are assigned to a crew that works on a variety projects. These include construction and maintenance of recreational and safety access trails, habitat restoration, fire fuel mitigation, historical preservation and park development projects. Corpsmembers earn a bi-weekly stipend, and are enrolled in AmeriCorps, earning a scholarship to be used towards advancing their learning after the program. They also receive up to four free mental health counseling sessions.
Corpsmembers have opportunities to network with federal, state and local natural source professionals and access to a vast alumni network. Corpsmembers will also receive training in one or more stewardship skillsets, including chainsaw operation, trail building and maintenance and pesticide application. No experience is necessary, MHYC provides hands-on training related to all projects.
Corpsmembers receive industry-recognized certifications that lead to effective service and highly-desirable qualifications and experience that support opportunities for future employment in natural resource management.

La Veta Library movie matinee

LA VETA—Join us at the LaVeta Library on Thursday, April 21 at 2 p.m. for our monthly movie matinee in the meeting room. We will be showing “The Way” starring Martin Sheen. HUERFANO—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado. Colcha embroidery has a wonderful history and a revival that will be explored through a series of classes. Folsom Museum’s Dry Cimarron Tour

FOLSOM — Join us for this year’s tour on Saturday, May 7, 8 a.m. The tour will begin at the Folsom Museum with a tour of the town and its history. It will proceed from there down the Dry Cimarron with stops at local ranches and other historical places of interest. There will be a break for lunch at the Burchard ranch where Mr. Burchard will give a presentation of artifacts and geological, and paleontological history. Participants can bring a lunch or order a sack lunch through the Museum at the time of registration. Fruit, snacks, and water will be provided by the Museum. (Donations are greatly appreciated.) On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. TRINIDAD— Come Celebrate the arts at Trinidad State College’s Spring Art’s Festival starting on Wednesday, April 27 and goes through Friday, April 29. Enjoy a plethora of activities including art workshops, artist lectures, a film festival, a talent show, open mic, preformances and a student art show. Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide. Aquatic Easter egg hunt

RATON—Come dunk, dive, swim and splash for over 1000 eggs in the Raton Regional Aquatic Center. This fun Easter event will be on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. The cost to participate is $5 per child and parents are free.

This discussion will be help on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30p.m. at the Raton Museum, 108 S. 2nd Street, Raton. This is a new opportunity for those interested in local and regional history to chat with the authors and learn about a little known logging railroad that bore its roots and fueled industry in the northern New Mexico and southern Colorado in the early 20th century.
