Volunteer Oppurtunity

LA VETA— The Town of La Veta’s Park and Tree Board seeks volunteers to help maintain our community’s “urban” forest. Our last scheduled spring work session is this coming Friday, May 27, 9 a.m. Join the Town Tree Board Arborist, and other “tree people” to learn about our urban forest: planting, mulching, deer protection, tree selection, safe pruning methods, and more! NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! We will meet in the parking area just west of the depot, on the northside of Town Park. If you have any further questions please contact Keith Hauber @ 816-277-4833.

La Veta Arbor Day tree planting May 27

LA VETA— Mayor Doug Brgoch has declared this Friday, May 27 as Arbor Day for the Town of La Veta.  Please join members of La Veta’s Park & Tree Board this Friday, May 27 at 10 a.m. in front of La Veta Village at 109 E. Francisco St in La Veta for the planting of the Town’s Arbor Day tree.  Keith Hauber, retired arborist, will be conducting a short educational session about proper tree planting and maintenance during and after the tree planting.  Please join us as we continue our 36 year heritage as a Tree City USA town with this Arbor Day tree planting.

Ribbon cutting for Highway of Legends

WALSENBURG/ TRINIDAD— Please mark your calendars for Friday, May 27, at 1 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Country Welcome Center, 400 Main Street in Walsenburg, to join your fellow citizens at an official ribbon cutting to celebrate the designation of the Scenic Highway of Legends (SHOL) as an official America’s Scenic Byway. A similar event will take place the same day at the Trinidad Welcome Center at 11 a.m. refreshments will be served.
This federal designation was awarded last year but due to concerns related to Covid, we have waited until 2022 to celebrate. The designation will bring SHOL broader recognition and esteem, along with increased visitation.”

Amphitheater talk in honor of Veterans and public servants

WALSENBURG— We would love to have you join us to hear Colorado’s longest serving game warden Bob Holder sharing his experiences. Topics may include how helping protect the natural world and spending time in nature supports healing from the stressors of serving in war zones and working in public safety. FAROUT Murals live performance

WALSENBURG—We are so excited to announce that Los Mocochetes will be playing a live performance for FAROUT Murals! Friday, May 27, 6-8 p.m. at Miners Plaza, Walsenburg. La Veta Trails Mini Yard Sale

LA VETA—Mark your calendar for the 2022 La Veta Trails Yard Sale Fundraiser. Saturday, May 28, 8 a.m. -2 p.m. at 309 S Oak Street, La Veta.  If you have items to donate, we will start collecting them on May 23rd. There will be lots of bargains. Pumpkin patch relocation

WALSENBURG— Bring your shovels, gloves, hats and muscles, were making room for a greenhouse and more pumpkins! Join us on Saturday, May 28 at 11 a.m. and help move the pumpkin patch at the Walsenburg Community Garden on 928 Russell St. Last year the garden provided 30 pumpkins for local kids and this year we’re hoping for more to provide all the kids with pumpkins. Help us move things around and turn the soil for another successful year.

Honoring our cultures: Internationally acclaimed performers

HUERFANO—Shelley Morningsong and Fabian Fontenelle from Zuni New Mexico are returning for performance events Memorial Day Weekend. Shelley won the prestigious Native American Music Industries’ Artist of the Year award in 2019. Fabian recently won the men’s northern traditional, golden age category at the 2022 Denver March Pow Wow. They will greet their many friends and present mini performances at the Francisco Fort Museum Opening Day Saturday, May 28, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. On Sunday, May 29, they will do a full performance concert at the Fox Theatre in Walsenburg at 1 p.m. The Honoring our Cultures concert will also include folkloric dancing by the beautiful and talented Tiana Camacho.
Tickets for that event are available by contacting tickets@foxtheatrewalsenburg.org $15 for adults; kids
under ten are free. Tickets ($20) will also be available at the door the day of the concert. The event is a
fundraising collaboration between the Fox Theatre and Huajatolla Heritage Foundation. You can contact

Artist’s Choice Show at SPACe Gallery

Reception for Artists Choice Show. Everyone is invited to the opening reception for the Artists’ Choice show at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus in La Veta, this Saturday, May 28, between 5 – 7 p.m. Refreshments are provided and there is no admission fee, although donations are gratefully accepted. In addition to 13 area artists showing a variety of styles, media, and subjects, photographer Ted Shafer is sharing a collection of photographs of historic religious structures from throughout the Southwest. Becky Myers is sharing a collection of energetic, colorful paintings. All artwork is for sale. Sales from Shafer’s works will benefit both the Food Coop and the Spanish Peaks Arts Council.

Wildflower hikes on the hogback

WALSENBURG —The World of Nature with Edie Flanagin. Please join Edie Saturday, May 28 at 7 p.m. in the Lathrop State Park amphitheater to learn about nature, including wildflowers. If you love identifying what you find with your Android or iPhone, Edie will be teaching us how to use the free iNaturalist app. iNaturalist is a joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. WALSENBURG—Join Fox Theatre and Walsenburg Golf Course for their summer Outdoor Movie series on Saturday, May 28 at 8 p.m. This months featured movie is ‘Hook’ starring Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts   and the late Robin Williams, directed by Steven Spielberg. Located at the Walsenburg Golf Course at 1399 Co Rd 502, Walsenburg. Enter at Lathrop State Park (no pass required) or take Second Street out from Walsenburg. A fun nature and wildflower hike

WALSENBURG — Join naturalist Edie Flanagin Sunday, May 29 at 10 a.m. for a fun nature and wildflower hike. If you love identifying what you find with your smartphone, Edie will also be teaching us how to use the iNaturalist app (free for both iPhones and Androids). Closest parking is the Horseshoe Lake Dam Parking Area. Hop on the cement trail between Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake and head south on foot to the bird viewing area. It is suggested to wear hiking shoes and bring plenty of water and your smartphone with the iNaturalist app downloaded. Memorial Day service

CUCHARA—Cuchara Valley Christian Community Services invites all to our annual Memorial Day service.  Please come and honor all veterans of the United States of America, by attending this meaningful Memorial Day service to be held at the La Veta Cemetery  on Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m. Immediately following this service there will be a luncheon at the La Veta Community Center.  Free for all veterans and children; $8 a plate for all non-veterans.

LVPL Oceans of Possibilities Summer Kids Program

LA VETA—Wednesday, June, 1 at 10 a.m. , we are starting off our summer programs learning about plastics and the ocean. Activities include: making edible water bottles, creating a mini coral reef, and a pudding

What is Pentecost?

WALSENBURG—Father Isaac Kariuki of St. Mary, OLS Church in Walsenburg will present a talk explaining the meaning of Pentecost in Delaney Hall after the 5 p.m. Mass on Wednesday, June 1.  We’ll have a potluck dinner before the talk, so bring a covered dish to share.  Drinks, paper goods, and cutlery will be provided.  Come and join us for another opportunity to grow in faith and fellowship with each other!   Dinner organizer is Mary Jo at 719-989-0969.

Fun family walk/run/bike event

WALSENBURG—Lathrop State Park and La Veta Trails are hosting a Fun Family Walk/Run/Bike on the Cuerno Verde Trail to celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 4th. This fun walk/run/bike is a great way to celebrate National Trails Day and Lathrop State Park. The Cuerno Verde Trail is a 3-mile concrete trail that is wide, and easy with no incline, so it is stroller- and wheel-chair friendly and suitable for all ages and abilities. There will be a scavenger hunt checklist so children and Junior Rangers can find things on the trail.

Summer Reading program opens at Trinidad Carnegie Public Library

TRINIDAD— Please join us this summer for outdoor programs, indoor programs, and crafts for kids from 0-18 years old. This summer we will be using a virtual platform, READSquared, to register for the Summer Reading Program, complete missions, track reading, and have access to some fun games. Scenic Highway of Legends Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

TRINIDAD — The Bi-County Scenic Highway of Legends (Colorado Hwy 12) has been awarded National Scenic Byway status and is now officially one of America’s Sceinic Byways!
To celebrate this, there is a ribbon cutting ceremony planned for Friday, May 27 at 11 a.m. at the Colorado Welcome Center, 309 Nevada Ave in Trinidad.  Please join us for exciting announcements and refreshments.

Dogone Safe!

TRINIDAD—On Friday, May 27, at 2 p.m., the Trinidad Carnegie library will host a workshop on how to act safely around dogs. This training is especially adapted for children and their families, but anyone interested can come. You will learn how to read a dog’s body language, and how to be safe around your own dog and also strange dogs.

Heritage Center and Museum opening

AGUILAR— The Apishapa Valley Heritage Center & Museum located at 132 E Main St in Aguilar will open this week Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 26-28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Be sure to stop by as we venture into the “museum” classification.  We have new photo prints of early Aguilar and much more history, old newspapers, and old ledgers with lots of info. A “Grand Opening” for the 2022 summer is planned for Saturday June 4th.
The Spanish Peaks Fire District will have a pancake breakfast on Main Street from 7 to 11 a.m. on that morning.  After supporting them, be sure to stop by the Museum after enjoying breakfast!  For more info call 719 406 5203

All aboard the city of Trinidad Trolley

TRINIDAD—Take a guided tour of the city’s attractions and architectural gems! The trolley is operational Monday-Saturday, Memorial Day through Labor Day. It departs from the Colorado Welcome Center at 309 Nevada Ave at the top of each hour throughout the day. Stops include: City Hall, Trinidad History Museum in downtown Trinidad, Mt. Guided Hike

TRINIDAD—Join Volunteer Park Interpreter, Sydnee Waller on the Carpios Cove Trail at Trinidad State Park on Sunday, May 29, 9 a.m. This leisurely hike will explore the wonders of the pinion-juniper woodland ecosystem, some local history, and the beginnings of Trinidad Lake. All ages are welcome, but children 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Wear properly fitting hiking shoes. Meet at the amphitheater

Snakes Alive!

TRINIDAD—Join local naturalist, Bob Kennemer, Sunday, May 29, 7 p.m. at the Amphitheater. Kennemer will have live non-venomous snakes on hand as he discusses snake safety, how to avoid dangerous confrontations with snakes, snake lore, and how to treat a rattle snake bite in the back country. This program is designed for all ages so bring the kids to this program, which is as entertaining as it is educational.

First Friday- Saving Trinidad

TRINIDAD— Friday, June 3, 3-5 p.m., Echos of History- Saving Trinidad, at Trinidad History Museum- 312 E. Main. Presented by Trinidad Historic Preservation and is free for the public to attend. From 3-4 p.m.- meet at the Chapell House for a guided tour (formally Murphy’s Funeral home). 4-5 p.m.- gather at the Baca-Bloom heritage gardens for music, informational tables and introduction of the new walking tour. 5-7 p.m.,

23rd Annual Fishing Tournament

WESTON—Stonewall Fire Auxiliary is hosting the 23rd Annual Fishing Tournament at Monument Lake Resort west of Trinidad on scenic HWY 12. The fun will begin on Saturday, June 4 with registration at 7 a.m. and orientation at 8 a.m., fishing will begin at 9 a.m. and continue to 3 p.m. with awards at 4 p.m. Boats and live bait will not be permitted and will be fishing for trout and salmon only. Discounted early registration must be received by Sunday, May 22 and forms are available online at www.stonewallfireauxiliary.com $3000 is cash prizes, winners to be judged by weight of fish and the earliest time of weigh in.

Sugarite Canyon State Park

COLFAX— Saturday, May 28 at 9 a.m. we’re hosting Coffee with a Ranger. Come talk wildlife with a ranger while enjoying coffee and donuts. At 7 p.m. join us at the Soda Pocket Amphitheater for “Sugarite Rocks”. We’ll be discussing the areas rich history in coal, dinosaurs, volcanos, killer space rocks and more.

Bosque Redondo exhibit opening

New Mexico Historic Sites commemorates the grand opening of “Bosque Redondo: A Place of Suffering…A Place of Survival,” on Saturday, May 28. The grand opening will run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; the site will remain open until 5 p.m. A permanent exhibition designed in collaboration with tribal partners that grapples with the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation, the U.S. army’s forced removal of Diné (Navajo) and Ndé (Mescalero Apache) people from their homes, and the brutality and perseverance of their life on the reservation.  There will be a variety of speakers, catered lunch for the first 500 visitors, a Native American art and rug auction hosted by R.B. Burnham & Company, and Native dancers.
For this event, we have waived admission and will be open until 5 p.m. The grand opening itself is also free and includes a catered lunch for the first 500 visitors. Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site: 3647 Billy the Kid Road, Fort Sumner.

Springer Electric Cooperative annual meeting

Springer—Wednesday, June 8 will be the 75th annual Springer Electric Cooperative at the Sim Brown Gymnasium, 1401 8th St. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and closes promptly at 10 a.m. There will be cash prizes for attendees and free BBQ for coop members. Our offices will be closed this day for the annual meeting.

Santa Fe Trail rendezvous

COLFAX—Saturday, June 11-19 at Whitting Center in Coal Canyon is the annual Santa Fe Trail Rendezvous. Hundreds of re-enactors participate in a living-history rendezvous of pre-1840’s clad mountain men with a black-powder shoot, hatchet throw, and teepee village. A Santa Fe Trail reenactment with Indians, Spaniards and mountain men is held on Saturday. It’s the largest gathering of its kind in New Mexico. The eight-day event stretches from the 2nd to 3rd Sunday every June, since 1975. One day-tour of SFT ruts on NRA property leading to Clifton House. Moonlight Hike

CAPULIN—Take a ranger guided hike at Capulin Volcano under the full or nearly full moon on Saturday, June 11 at 8:30 p.m. Subjects include night time biology, lunar geography, astronomy, and the park after dark. Come and experience the top of Capulin Volcano in a new light! Wear warm clothing and layers as the weather may be chilly. Meet at the visitor center before heading up the volcano. Reservations are required; call 575-278-2201 with the number of people attending to reserve a spot.
