OUR WORLD – This 12-week series is designed to aid Small Business Owners in starting, diversifying, or improving their business. Legal service available for seniors from SCCOG Area Agency on Aging

TRINIDAD/WALSENBURG— By virtue of a grant from the South Central Council of Governments’ Area Agency on Aging, Colorado Legal Services is able to provide legal assistance to older residents of Huerfano and Las Animas counties (age 60 and over) on a limited basis in civil legal matters including public benefits,  long term care eligibility, Medicaid, senior abuse and neglect, defense of guardianships, protective proceedings, tenant’s rights, simple wills, medical and financial powers of attorney, consumer rights, collections defense, Medicare issues and family law.
Priority will be given to those with the greatest social and economic need.

Loving Yourself in Times of Grief

OUR WORLD – The Grief Support Group sponsored by Mt. Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice for February will be the usual 2nd Wednesday of the month, Feb. 9th from 2-3:30. In keeping with a Valentine theme, our topic for the month will be “Loving Yourself in Times of Grief” led by Val Stepien, MSW. Café founder, Susanne, thought it would be a good chance to throw in some existentialist thought. She is reading Paul Tillich’s, The Courage to Be. According to Tillich, one major source of existential anxiety is change, especially that big, big change we will all go through—death. Tillich believed the antidote to such anxiety is courage, in this case, the courage to allow life to change us.

Parks and Trails volunteer opportunities

WALSENBURG –  Dustin Stambaugh, Walsenburg City Administrator, and Brad Rice, Walsenburg Parks Manager, have asked La Veta Trails to co-host two clean-up opportunities in Walsenburg this spring. La Veta Trails is thrilled to support these clean-up events.
We will host a Walsenburg Volunteer Sign-up Event in the next two to three weeks. New hours at SPACe

LA VETA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe) in La Veta has changed the days and hours the SPACe Gallery is open. During January, SPACe is only open on Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Beginning Feb. 3, the gallery will be open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Artwork for the annual Members’ Show will be accepted at that time. Call for Players D&D 5E Campaign

WALSENBURG –  You currently live a meager mundane life but often dream of becoming an adventurer. The day is waning and dusk is upon you. You are torn from your daydreams, hearing sound of people screaming, buildings burning, and the sounds of people running past you. “The Dragovar Empire is upon us!’
The Dragovar Empire is an empire to the North with which your kingdom of Moldavia is currently at war. They are an empire ruled by a council of chromatic  dragons that command thousands of Dragonborn troops. You find yourself running away from the sounds of battle to find some safety and end up at the docks. Many ships are fleeing but there is one getting ready to set sail.  A stern-looking tabaxi looks at you and says “Well, are you coming?”
Starts Friday, Jan. 28, and runs every Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Looking for 5-6 committed players until the end of April. Sessions are $10 and miniatures, 3D terrain, and custom content are provided.

Meet the Candidate- Karl Sporleder, County Commissioner, District 3

WALSENBURG –  Karl will host a “Meet the Candidate Karl Sporleder for County Commissioner” event on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. at Rollin’ Smoke Garage, 115 E. 5th St, Walsenburg.  Karl will discuss his platform and answer guests’ questions.  Come share your visions and comments for the future of Huerfano County.
We will also have an added guest, Ty Winter, who is running in the newly created House District 47.
Karl will also host a ”Meet the Candidate” event on Saturday, Feb. 19, st 4 p.m. at Fatt Wellers, 121 N. Main St., La Veta.

American Legion Blood Drive, and monthly Post meeting

WALSENBURG –  An American Legion Blood Drive will be held on Tuesday,  Feb. 8 located in the Huerfano Community Center 928 Russell St. Walsenburg. On Wednesday, Feb. 9, in the same building, American Legion Post 16 will be holding their monthly meeting at 6 p.m. We are hoping to see all of your smiling faces at these two functions.

Fox Walsenburg chili competition  and big Super Bowl game watch party

WALSENBURG – On Sunday, Feb. 13th from 3 p.m. – 10 p.m., there will be a combination Gameday Viewing  Party and Chili Cook-off at the 2nd Street Bar and Grill located at the Walsenburg Golf Course! The chili competition is a fundraiser for Fox, a 501(c)(3) organization. One $10 donation will allow you to sample the competition chili and cast your vote for best red, green, and dip/side dish as a People’s Choice Judge.
Winners receive a prize package that includes goodies and awards!

Call for artists: Carnegie Library Art Wall

TRINIDAD  — The Art Wall at the library has been a bit dormant since the pandemic hit, but with more and more visitors coming to the library, it’s time to remind everyone about this free resource. We have about fifteen linear feet of wall space with a very high ceiling. It’s equipped with a great hanging system. We will provide a custom-designed poster and description cards for the individual pieces. We will also help with promotion via our social media, website and email, and we will notify the local newspapers of your exhibit. Sales are by direct communication between the artist and the buyer. Exhibits are one month long, starting on the first of every month.

Sharpen your feminist thinking with the Philosopher’s Toolkit

TRINIDAD  — Susanne van der Meer is a certified Philosophical Practitioner, MA Continental Philosophy. Philosophical ideas and methods help us to deepen our meaning-making in everyday life. She has been co-hosting a monthly Philosophy Cafe at the Carnegie Public Library in Trinidad for a while now, and beginning on Jan. 27, she will begin hosting a series of four workshops on philosophy and feminism on the Trinidad State Campus in room Berg 401 every other Thursday from 5-6:30 p.m.
This series will cover topics ranging from oppressive thinking hats, autonomy and paternalism to feminist ethics and cultural diversity.

Lake activity closed indefinitely

COLFAX — Sugarite Canyon State Park has suspended lake activities indefinitely  because of thin ice.  The Lake Alice Campground remains open on a first-come, first-serve basis. For additional information, call 575-445-5607. Stage II Fire Restrictions are also in place.  Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove is prohibited. The use of devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed. Such devices can only be used in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three (3) feet of the device. Smoking is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building.

Casting call for Bugsy Malone Jr

COLFAX — Santa Fe Trail School for the Performing Arts Raton Youth Theatre is gearing up for a spring production of Bugsy Malone JR.  The show’s director is Beki Laird, the musical director is Clint Henson, and Wanda Henson is assisting both directors.
Casting call will be held Thursday and Friday, Feb. 3 and 4, at 6 p.m., rehearsal should begin on Monday, Feb. 7.
Note: Rehearsal &/or production dates subject to change due to COVID restrictions/infection rates, and the entire show will be postponed/canceled if there aren’t enough participants to fill the roles at this time.
The cast list for this show calls for 25-50+ people, so everyone from kindergarten to college is encouraged to participate.
No previous experience necessary and everyone who comes to the casting call will be in the show if you want to be.
It is a musical, but we are not professional singers & dancers – the goal is to have fun.  Don’t be scared!!
Backstage crew and lots of extras are also needed, so tell all your friends and spread the word – you don’t want to miss out on this exciting production!!

Millicent Rogers Museum celebrates its 20th Anniversary Miniatures Show

TAOS  — The Millicent Rogers Museum in El Prado, New Mexico is opening its 20th Anniversary Miniatures Show and Sale on Feb. 5. Featuring more than 120 artists from Taos and Rio Arriba Counties, the exhibition will be on view with its artworks for sale through March 6. This year’s “Minis,” as locals refer to it, offers audiences a dynamic glimpse of northern New Mexico’s artistic community in small-scale works in ceramic, oil, acrylic, watercolor, silver, steel, wood, photography, and mixed media. Each year, the museum and community artists join forces to produce the “Minis” show.

HUERFANO – We live in an area alive with traditions of the many ethnic groups that call our beautiful area home. Huajatolla Heritage Foundation is pleased to partner with the library in  La Veta to present the second part of a program sharing some of the holiday traditions of the region. Volunteer for Community Holiday Food Packing Event

HUERFANO – Do you love your community and want to give back in a really tangible way? Spark the Change Colorado is hosting a food packing event on Dec. 18th from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

United Church of Walsenburg Christmas Weekend

WALSENBURG –   The United Church of Walsenburg will hold services only at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19th. The  Christmas Eve service will take place on Dec. 24th at 5 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served after the service.

Trinidad Trolley Tours begin Dec 3

TRINIDAD  — Trinidad Trolley tours begin for the holidays on Dec. 3 and go through Dec. 22.  Tours run twice a day  Wednesday through Sunday with the first tour starts at 5:30 p.m. and the second being at  7p.m.

Monoclonal antibody treatment bus

TRINIDAD  —  CO – The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) deployed a monoclonal antibody treatment bus to Las Animas County as part of efforts to expand access throughout the state to this COVID-19 treatment. The treatment is intended to lessen the risk of serious illness among those newly infected with COVID-19. Patients seeking the treatment will not need a doctor’s referral but will need an appointment.
The CDPHE monoclonal antibody treatment bus will be available during the following dates and times:
 WHERE: Las Animas County Health Dept. 412 Benedicta Ave, Trinidad, CO 81082
 WHEN: Monday, Dece. 13 – Saturday, Dec. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
 Monday, Dec. 20 -Thursday Dec.r 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m (Last patient at 4).

12 Books of Christmas Scavenger Hunt

TRINIDAD  — From Dec. 6 – 22, Carnegie Public Library will be holding a Christmas Scavenger Hunt! Here’s how it works.
1. Pick up a scavenger hunt bookmark from the Carnegie Public Library or a participating business.
2. Using the clues on the bookmark, locate a hidden Christmas book in each participating business. (The book remains at each location) (Don’t tell your friends where they are hidden.)
3. Once you have located all of the books, bring the completed bookmark back to the library for a prize.
Participating businesses are the Trinidad Gift Shop, Chronicle News, Fishers Peak Outfitters, Curly’s Beads, Noah’s Ark, Shirley’s Thrift Store, Perkatory Coffee House, Colie’s Cakes and Pastries, Books and More, Mutiny Café, the Art Cottage, and of course the Carnegie Public Library.

Las Posadas this Friday

TRINIDAD  —  Las Posadas Procession and Celebration-Las Animas County Hispanic Chamber and Southern Colorado Coal Mining Museum will be hosting Las Posadas on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. at the Coal Mining Museum, 219 W. Main Street, Trinidad, CO.
Las Posadas Is a celebration that represents the difficulties that Joseph and Mary, the mother of Jesus, faced in search of a room when traveling to Bethlehem. Groups of children and adults go from house to house singing traditional songs requesting lodging (posada).
We will have live music and go to different businesses on Main Street and Commercial Street ending back at the museum. We welcome anyone who would like to be a part of Las Posadas either by dressing up as part or participate in the procession. We would love for you to join us! Santa Photos and Story Time

TRINIDAD  —  On Dec. 18th from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m., Mrs. Claus will be at Corridino Auto Body at 124 N. Maple to read The Night Before Christmas. Kids will receive cookies, hot cocoa, a goodie bag and a picture with Santa. The cost is $10, which will go to benefit ROAR Relay for Life. Christmas Dinner from Trinidad Soup Kitchen

TRINIDAD  —  Christmas dinner boxes will be prepared by the workers at the Trinidad Soup Kitchen, however this year they will only be delivered in the
Trinidad area due to COVID.
But if you know someone who would be willing to drive to Trinidad and pick-up dinner boxes and bring them to those who’ve ordered them outside of Trinidad, the soup kitchen will be happy to prepare them.
Order your dinner box by calling Terrie at 719-680-0427 or Sandra at 719-679-2587. They will be taking orders for the boxes until the deadline on Dec. 23.
The Trinidad soup kitchen will appreciate any monetary donations.

COLFAX  —There are several fun events taking place up at Sugarite this holiday season, so come on out and visit for a breath of fresh air and a bit of winter cheer!
