CS Stylings Toy Drive now on for SCCY

WALSENBURG –   CS Stylings is holding a Toy Drive to benefit the local kids in the Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth. If you want to donate, you can bring a toy suitable for ages 6-19 to CS Stylings at 725 Main St from now until Dec. 18th. Hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday- Friday and 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday. Encanto at the Fox in Walsenburg

WALSENBURG –  Our weekend movie is Disney’s “Encanto,” rated PG, with a run time of 1 hour 49 minutes.
The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift — every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger.
Movie showtimes are Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.
Movie ticket prices are $7 for adults, $6 for students and teachers, $5 for children (ages 5 to 12).

Plant a Book at La Veta Library

LA VETA — This holiday season make a reader’s Christmas bright and help grow the La Veta Library’s children’s book collection.  Planting a book in the library’s collection is a great and easy way to honor a friend or relative. A dedication bookplate will be placed inside one of our pre-selected books and you can choose a card to give to your special person. Plant-A-Book is going on now.  All dedications cost $15.00.  Contact us at 742-3572 for more information. HUERFANO – Signup for Two Peaks Fitness Youth Sports Leagues Basketball! Ages 4-12. Walsenburg and La Veta leagues. Signup Monday-Friday, Dec 6-17 at Two Peaks Fitness, 216 S Main St, from 3-6 p.m.

Upcoming pruning work sessions for La Veta’s Park & Tree Board

LA VETA — Do you want to learn how to properly prune trees? Do you want to help improve and maintain La Veta’s “urban” forest at the park and along the streets? Please join the PTB members for an upcoming pruning work session on Dec 21. We will meet at the Town’s Maintenance Building just west of the Post Office at 8 a.m.
If you plan to join us, please contact Keith Hauber at 816-277-4833. Wear long sleeves, gloves, safety eye wear and a hard hat if you can. Work sessions may be cancelled due to weather.

Holiday Traditions of the Southwest

HUERFANO – We live in an area alive with traditions of the many ethnic groups that call our beautiful area home. Huajatolla Heritage Foundation is pleased to partner with the library in  La Veta to present the second part of a program sharing some of the holiday traditions of the region. Join us at 2 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 16 at the La Veta Library to share some stories of our rich heritage.
Please come and share your traditions and learn about the ones that Albert Galvan and Sandy Dolak will share. Home bizcochitos and Mexican hot chocolate will be served. Join us for a special program of holiday sharing. This program is brought to you with support by Colorado Humanities.

Book and Bake Sale at Spanish Peaks Library

WALSENBURG – Please join the Friends of the Spanish Peaks Library for a book and bake sale Thursday and Friday, Dec. 16th and 17th  from 10a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be a wonderful selection of books along with a delicious variety of baked goods, all at reasonable prices. All proceeds go to support the Spanish Peaks Library District. The Book and Bake Sale will take place at the library which is located at 415 Walsen Ave, Walsenburg CO, 81089.

Spanish Peaks Library Storytime

WALSENBURG – We are going to change things up a little bit this week at storytime.  Instead of a craft we will be doing yoga and the Jingle Jive game along with our Christmas story books.  We look forward to seeing you there.

SCVA Ensemble Christmas Concert

LA VETA —The Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble announces its Christmas Concert schedule for December, 2021:
Friday, Dec. 17, 6:00 p.m. at the
La Veta United Methodist Church in La Veta;
Saturday, Dec. 18, 2:00 p.m., at the Gardner Methodist Church in Gardner;
Sunday, Dec. 19, 2:00 p.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Walsenburg.  This year’s concert is titled “Song Heard ‘Round The World” and features a collection of music and carols from the world’s diverse Christmas traditions.

Volunteer for Community Holiday Food Packing Event

HUERFANO – Do you love your community and want to give back in a really tangible way? Spark the Change Colorado is hosting a food packing event on Dec. 18th from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Come listen to some holiday tunes and pack delicious nutritious food for your fellow community members. Over the course of this 2.5 hour event, volunteers will pack 15,000 meals! Tom Munch Christmas Concert

LA VETA — On Saturday, Dec. 18th at 7p.m., Tom Munch will be performing a Christmas Concert at the La Veta Mercantile.
Tom has been deeply steeped in Christmas and Winter songs since he wasa born, and has made a lifelong passion of learning and expressing these songs yearly at venues all over the place. They are unique in that we all share them and know them by heart – regardless of background and generation.

United Church of Walsenburg Christmas Weekend

WALSENBURG –   The United Church of Walsenburg will hold services only at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19th. The  Christmas Eve service will take place on Dec. 24th at 5 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served after the service.
The service on the 26th of December will be at the regular time of 1 p.m.  All are welcome, come join us.  The entrance by the ramp on Kansas Ave will be open.

Christmas Bird Count

LA VETA —The Spanish Peaks Christmas Bird Count will be held on Dec. 21st. Anyone wishing to join the count should meet at the La Veta Town Park at 8a.m. Please adhere to Covid protocols.

Community Holiday Blessing

TC’s Annual Community Christmas Dinner

Spanish Peaks Library expands hours

WALSENBURG – In order to better serve the communities of Huerfano County, The Spanish Peaks Library District is pleased to announce expanded hours.
Starting Monday, Jan. 3rd the Walsenburg Library will be open:
Monday-Wednesday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Thursday-Friday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Sunday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Carnegie Library Giving Tree

TRINIDAD  —  ‘Tis the season to give with Carnegie Public Library’s Giving Tree!
We’re collecting NEW hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, and socks for all ages for those in need in our community. Donations are being taken now through Dec. 31st.
You can bring your donations into the library or give us a call when you arrive to use our curbside service. We greatly appreciate your help!

Trinidad Trolley Tours begin Dec 3

TRINIDAD  — Trinidad Trolley tours begin for the holidays on Dec. 3 and go through Dec. 22.  Tours run twice a day  Wednesday through Sunday with the first tour starts at 5:30 p.m. and the second being at  7p.m.

Monoclonal antibody treatment bus

TRINIDAD  —  CO – The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) deployed a monoclonal antibody treatment bus to Las Animas County as part of efforts to expand access throughout the state to this COVID-19 treatment. The treatment is intended to lessen the risk of serious illness among those newly infected with COVID-19. Patients seeking the treatment will not need a doctor’s referral but will need an appointment.
The CDPHE monoclonal antibody treatment bus will be available during the following dates and times:
 WHERE: Las Animas County Health Dept. 412 Benedicta Ave, Trinidad, CO 81082
 WHEN: Monday, Dece. 13 – Saturday, Dec. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
 Monday, Dec. 20 -Thursday Dec.r 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m (Last patient at 4).

12 Books of Christmas Scavenger Hunt

TRINIDAD  — From Dec. 6 – 22, Carnegie Public Library will be holding a Christmas Scavenger Hunt! Here’s how it works.
1. Pick up a scavenger hunt bookmark from the Carnegie Public Library or a participating business.
2. Using the clues on the bookmark, locate a hidden Christmas book in each participating business. (The book remains at each location) (Don’t tell your friends where they are hidden.)
3. Once you have located all of the books, bring the completed bookmark back to the library for a prize.
Participating businesses are the Trinidad Gift Shop, Chronicle News, Fishers Peak Outfitters, Curly’s Beads, Noah’s Ark, Shirley’s Thrift Store, Perkatory Coffee House, Colie’s Cakes and Pastries, Books and More, Mutiny Café, the Art Cottage, and of course the Carnegie Public Library.

Las Posadas this Friday

TRINIDAD  —  Las Posadas Procession and Celebration-Las Animas County Hispanic Chamber and Southern Colorado Coal Mining Museum will be hosting Las Posadas on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. at the Coal Mining Museum, 219 W. Main Street, Trinidad, CO.
Las Posadas Is a celebration that represents the difficulties that Joseph and Mary, the mother of Jesus, faced in search of a room when traveling to Bethlehem. Groups of children and adults go from house to house singing traditional songs requesting lodging (posada).
We will have live music and go to different businesses on Main Street and Commercial Street ending back at the museum. We welcome anyone who would like to be a part of Las Posadas either by dressing up as part or participate in the procession. We would love for you to join us! Santa Photos and Story Time

Christmas Dinner from Trinidad Soup Kitchen

TRINIDAD  —  Christmas dinner boxes will be prepared by the workers at the Trinidad Soup Kitchen, however this year they will only be delivered in the
Trinidad area due to COVID.
But if you know someone who would be willing to drive to Trinidad and pick-up dinner boxes and bring them to those who’ve ordered them outside of Trinidad, the soup kitchen will be happy to prepare them.
Order your dinner box by calling Terrie at 719-680-0427 or Sandra at 719-679-2587. They will be taking orders for the boxes until the deadline on Dec. 23.
The Trinidad soup kitchen will appreciate any monetary donations.
