Vietnam Veterans Memorial moving wall coming to Walsenburg

by Brian Manning

WALSENBURG — The Moving Wall, which is a half-size replica of the Washington, DC, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will be in Walsenburg from June 18-22, 2020, at the request of American Legion Post 16 and Auxiliary in Walsenburg. John Devitt, a Vietnam Veteran, felt that he needed to share his experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington. This wall has been touring the country for more than 30 years.

The event will take place at the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center, which also houses the Veterans Community Center. This way residents of the home will have access to the Wall.

While on display, the wall will be accessible 24 hours a day to accommodate those who want to visit the wall at a specific time. This will be a very solemn occasion for some, so please respect people who might be grieving and want privacy.

Fundraising will be necessary to raise money for bringing the Wall to Walsenburg, expense for setting the wall, building a platform, painting posters, advertising, renting chairs and canopies for older visitors. All money raised will only be used for this event and Post 16 is a 501(c)19 so donations are deductible.

Post 16 reminds all veterans that they are having open enrollment and anyone that has served in the military can join with no restrictions on the time they served.  They welcome new members.

This is an exciting event that has the potential for bringing thousands to the area. Many organizations and people from the community will be involved as volunteers to help with this project. It will take hard work and good planning to make this event successful.

There will be more information soon and a Facebook page and a GoFundMe page will be established very soon. Anyone looking for information now should call Adjutant/Financial Officer Dave Rogers at 719-738-9965.

Busy election year gets underway

Ballots mailed last week for Super Tuesday Presidential Primary: Plenty more to come

by Mark Craddock

County clerks throughout the state mailed out ballots Feb. 10 to some 3.9 million registered voters for Colorado’s 2020 presidential primary March 3, the first of a flurry of events on the election calendar.

As of Feb. 21, Colorado voters returned 422,861 ballots, according to the Colorado Secretary of State‘s office.

And so it begins:

Before the year is out, Colorado voters will take part in the presidential primary; caucuses and assemblies for county, state and congressional races; a June primary ballot; myriad municipal and special district elections – all concluding with the Nov. 3, 2020, general election.

Here’s a rundown of what and when local voters will see in their mailboxes and ballot boxes:

March 3: Presidential Primary

By now, voters should have received in the mail their ballots for the presidential primary. Registered Democrats and Republicans will receive their respective party’s ballot. Unaffiliated voters will receive both ballots, but can only vote one of them.

Republicans will choose between incumbent President Donald Trump and a short list of unlikely challengers, including Matthew John Matern, Robert Ardini, Joe Walsh, Bill Weld and Zoltan G. Istvan.

The Democratic ballot contains 17 names, including many who have already suspended their campaigns such as Cory Booker, Michael Bennett and Andrew Yang, as well as several obscure hopefuls such as Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente III and Rita Krichevsky.

Huerfano County County Clerk Nancy Cruz said ballots may be returned by mail, dropped off at the clerk’s office, 401 Main Street, during business hours or dropped in the secure drive-up ballot box between the County Courthouse and the Huerfano County Mining Museum. The drop box is accessible 24 hours a day, Cruz said, in spite of ongoing construction on the new county justice center. Voters planning to return their ballots by mail should act soon, Cruz said, to ensure there are received by March 3.

In addition, Cruz said, voters can come to the Clerk’s Office, dubbed the Voting Services Polling Center, any time during regular business hours Mondays through Fridays, to ask questions, check their voter registration status, register to vote or cast a ballot.

She said the office will be open Saturday, Feb. 29, 8 a.m. to noon, to accommodate working people.

Las Animas County Clerk Peach Vigil said Trinidad and Las Animas County voters can likewise return their ballots by mail or at the clerk’s office, 200 E. First Street. She said there is a 24-hour drop box available in the courthouse parking lot courtyard and another at the courthouse entrance, next to the security guard.

Her office will also be open Saturday, Feb. 29, 8 a.m. to noon, to assist voters.

March 7: Precinct Caucuses

In Huerfano County, both Democratic and Republican parties will hold their caucuses March 7. For Democrats, Gardner residents will caucus at the Gardner Community Center, La Veta residents will caucus at the La Veta Library and all other precincts will convene at the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg. La Veta Republicans will caucus at the La Veta Methodist Church. All other Huerfano County Republicans will convene at the Huerfano Community Church.

The Republican caucuses will begin at 10 a.m. and the Democrats meet at 2 p.m. Caucus goers should arrive at least 30 minutes early to check in.

Las Animas County Democrats will host their precinct caucuses March 7, with registration starting at 1:15 p.m. and the caucus beginning at 2 p.m. Precinct 1 will meet at the Kim Firechouse, Precinct 3 will meet at the Hoehne Fire Dept., and Precinct 4 will meet at the Aguilar Town Hall.

Precinct 2 (Branson), Precinct 5 (Stonewall), Precinct 6 (Segundo and Weston areas) and precinct 7 (Cokedale and canyon areas) will join Precincts 8-16 at the Trinidad Middle School cafeteria, 615 Park Street.

The Las Animas County Republican precinct cacucuses will be held March 7, 10 a.m. Precinct 1 will meet at the Kim Senior Center; Precinct 2 will meet at the Branson School; Precinct 3 will meet at the Hoehne Community Center; Precinct 4 will meet at the Aaguilar Community Center; Precincts 5 and 6 will meet at the primero School; and Precincts 7-16 will meet at Fort Wooten, 204 S. Chestnut, Trinidad.

At the caucuses, citizens convene precinct-by-precinct, select their preferred candidates for various races, and appoint delegates to attend the party’s county assembly.

March 14 & 21: County assembly

The Huerfano County Republican county assembly will be held March 14 at 511 Main St. and the Democrats’ county assembly will be held March 21.

Las Animas County Democrats will hold their county assembly March 21, 8 a.m., at SCRT, 131 W. Main.

The Las Animas County Republicans’ county assembly will be held March 21, 10 a.m., at the Massari Theater at TSJC.

Delegates selected during the county conventions will attend each party’s state conventions later in the spring.

June 30: Primary Election

Much like the Super Tuesday presidential primary, voters will receive their June primary ballots in the mail, based on their party affiliation.

Those ballots will be mailed the week of June 12. Ballots may be returned by mail, via the drop box or in the county clerk’s office.

Cruz and Vigil both said their offices will again be open June 27, 8 a.m. to noon, to assist voters.

Nov. 3: General Election

Ballots will be mailed to registered voters starting Oct. 12. Cruz said her office will open two consecutive Saturdays before Election Day — Oct. 24 and 31, 8 a.m.-noon — to assist voters.

Vigil said the Las Animas County Clerk’s Office will be open Saturday, Oct. 31, 8 a.m.-noon.

As with the primaries, voters are urged to return their ballots early, if by mail, to ensure they arrive on or before Nov. 3.

Voters may also drop off their ballots in their respective county’s drop boxes or at the clerks’ offices.

WELCOME FANS, PARENTS AND WRESTLING Enthusiasts

WELCOME FANS, PARENTS AND WRESTLING Enthusiasts Eleven from Walsenburg, three from Trinidad,

qualify for the Colorado State Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Denver

by David Tesitor

DENVER —Welcome to the 2020 Colorado State Wrestling Tournament! For wrestlers, coaches, and fans, this weekend caps an exciting season of action. Soon 406 matches will be wrestled per classification, 1624 in all. Some contestants will be wrestling in their first state tournament, while others will be returning to meet old adversaries. By tournament’s end, podium finishers will be crowned and team champions will stand tall on the floor of the Pepsi Center. Our coverage promises to be the best and most complete in the 13 years the World Journal has been documenting this athletic spectacle.

It’s now time for what is called “the second season.” Forget individual records. Win four, win state. The extra week of the wrestling season this year helped hone wrestlers’ techniques to prepare them for this, the biggest weekend of the year.

We will begin our coverage this afternoon with postings on our Facebook page. There will be a few changes from the way we did coverage in the past. First, since the action will be back-to-back, with coverage in 12 of the 14 weight classes, we will post match results as they happen, when we are back in ‘Media Row.’ We will post complete details later in the day, when the sessions are over or as time permits. Second, look for excerpts of articles from our print edition with instructions on how to get “the rest of the story” in our on-line edition.

For only $40, you can sign up for our on-line edition and enjoy all our special Tournament content, including a special video spotlight of each of our 14 State qualifiers OR purchase a one-year subscription to our print edition at a special price of $45 for new subscribers. The special ends April 1, so don’t be a fool!

Finally, without the support of our advertisers in the print edition, none of this would be possible. Thank them for their support by visiting their businesses.

Beginning this afternoon, any wrestler, even one not ranked during the season, who finished in the top four in his respective regional tournament, has a chance of placing. Top ranked wrestlers are often upset because they looked at the record of their opponent and not their ability. Today everyone has a 0-0 record. Wrestle every match as if it were your last. It isn’t over till the final whistle blows.

We will have a book discussion and exciting programs based on the theme and novel, so stop by and get your FREE copy at the La Veta Library, start reading and be looking in the Journal for the schedule of our upcoming events!

Wanted: logo and graphic

design expert!

LA VETA — La Veta Public Library is looking for graphic de- signers to help teach a one-time, brief series of classes on “graphic design for nonprofits.” La Veta has numerous active nonprofit organizations that serve this community in many wonderful ways. We want to help these nonprofit programs succeed by providing the training and support they specifically need. Right now, a group of several La Veta nonprofits are in need of logos and ongoing graphic design work, however, working on a nonprofit budget, many have to rely on self-taught skills and generous volunteers to reach their de- sired outcomes. Therefore, we would like to offer a training and educational series covering this specialty area, and we are seeking local experts to join our volunteer crew, LV Techies! If you are interested in contributing to this project, please con- tact Rachel or Ashley as soon as possible at 719-742-3572 or tech-help@lvpl.org
