2020 Election information
sOuThERN COLORAdO — The Democratic and Republican committees want to re- mind citizens of these important dates this spring. To vote at your party caucus (Saturday, March 7) you must be registered in that political party by Friday, Feb 14. Go to www.govotecolorado.gov to check your voter registration and find your precinct number. The 2020 election year is upon us!
County clerks across the state of Colorado have mailed out ballot packets for the March 3rd Presidential Primary. Registered Republican and Democratic voters will receive the ballot of their party. Unaffiliated voters will receive both party’s ballots, unless they chose a party before the February 3rd deadline, but are only to vote and send back one. Voters who do not receive a ballot by February 19th should contact their county clerk.
Voters will also have the opportunity to vote in person beginning Monday, Feb. 24 and continuing through Primary Election Day on March 3 until 7 p.m. Colorado also offers same-day voter registration, allowing eligible Coloradans to register and vote on the day of election. Colorado is one of 14 states holding primaries on Super Tuesday, meaning Coloradans will have a significant role in decid- ing who will run for president in the General Election on November 3rd.

Two Peaks/One Book
LA VETA — The La Veta Library will once again be hosting their annual Two Peaks/One Book Community Book read, with the goal of bringing our area together through a great work of literature. This year’s theme is “ethics and civility” and the book we have chosen is the New York Time’s Best Seller, “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles. It is the beautifully written story of Count Alexander Rostov who is stripped of his title and life of luxury and sentenced to house arrest in a small attic room at the Metropol Hotel. The book is rich in history, humor, intrigue and how one man made the most of a difficult situation and entered into a world of joy and emotional discovery. Gardening 101 Series – Seed Exchange
wALsENBuRG — The Spanish Peaks Library is launching monthly gardening classes, beginning with a seed exchange on Sunday, Feb. 16, 1:30 p.m..
Participants are encouraged to bring in seeds to exchange with others. The class will also cover best practices for planting of seeds, how to germinate seeds, and how to start seeds indoors. Additionally, we will discuss reading a seed catalog to determine plant viability in our region.

Water Conservancy District Board meeting
wALsENBuRG — The next meeting of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District has been changed to Monday, Feb. 17, 6 p.m. at the Walsenburg Housing Authority, 220 Russell Avenue. The agenda will include: river reports; Collaborative Storage and Fire Restoration grant project updates; augmentation water application and Sheep Mountain reservoir updates; director committee reports. The meeting is open to the public. An executive session may be held near the end of the meeting if needed to discuss ongoing litigation; real, personal or other property interests; receiving legal advice on specific legal questions; and to determine positions on negotiations.

Each class is free and will provide attendees the certification required for down payment assistance, USDA and FHA programs. Cathy Mullins is currently serving as Municipal Judge in La Veta. After law school graduation, she broke the “glass ceiling” by running for and being elected as the first woman in the state to become a District Attorney (12th Judicial District- San Luis Valley) and that was only the beginning of her interesting and varied career as an artist and a lawyer.
Nancy Dick, from La Veta, served in the House of Representatives from 1975 to 1979 then went on to become Colorado’s first Lieutenant Governor under Richard Lamm from 1979-1987. Join us as we have a relaxed chat plus a question and answer session with these two accomplished and fascinating women who have made a difference! Discover how to use just two colors, opposites on the color wheel, to create amazing watercolor paintings in a variety of subjects. TRiNidAd — Carnegie Library, in partnership with Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter, will hold a special program “Read to a dog or cat” Friday, Feb. 21 , 1 to 2 p.m. at the library. Paula Manini, a volunteer from Noah’s Ark, will bring gentle animals to the library. You’ll get some private space to be with a dog or cat and read them a story. You know, a nice thing about reading to dogs is that they don’t correct you, they just listen! Open to all ages. Kids under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
Beekeeping: Heritage School at TSJC
TRiNidAd — The Heritage School at TSJC , 600 Prospect will offer a two-day workshop Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 22, and 23, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.. Tuition is $50 which includes handouts. The class will cover the origin of bees and an overview of the European honey bee and where it fits in the world of bees, the unique bio- logy of bees, essential equipment needed for beekeepers, when and where to order to get a hive started, what beekeepers do and various problems they encounter, beekeeping through the sea- sons, ways to nurture your bees and the economics of beekeeping. Colfax Rapid Response meeting tonight
RATON — Colfax County Rapid Response meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, 7 p.m. at the Colfax County Courthouse, 230 North 3rd Street. The next meeting is Thursday, Feb. 13. Colfax County Rapid Response is a volunteer firefighting community based organization. Currently we engage in wildland and structural fires. When called upon we serve a civic duty, which is to protect the communities and citizens in Colfax County.
We are constantly looking for new volunteers, so if you are interested, please come to one of our meetings.

Hemp regulatory symposium webinar
BROOMFiELd — The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) will present a public Hemp Regulatory and Production Symposium at the Department’s Broomfield, Colorado campus and via live webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 8 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.
To provide increased service and in response to stake- holder interest, the symposium will expand on CDA’s annual Hemp Program Year in Review meeting to also include education, fostering consumer and farmer protection, and preempting noncompliance issues.
