4-wheeler fundraiser for animal shelters
TRINIDAD/RATON — Lloyd Rosecrans and his friend H.L. Bowman, have started a small group of avid 4 wheelers who enjoy driving on challenging roads. One road that is a favorite is Co. Rd. 85.5 in Las Animas County. The road is very rough, rock and dirt, one lane and only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. “As a group, we are all animal lovers and the pandemic has really hurt the local animal shelters. We decided last June that we should hold a rally and donate the money raised to the two shelters. We asked for a $20 donation for each vehicle. We are proud to state that 100% of all donations go to the shelters. (We raised $200 in July.)” The route
taken in July, was from Trinidad to Raton. The group is planning on holding this rally twice a year; around the 4th of July, traveling North to South and around Labor Day, traveling South to North.
On Saturday, Sept. 5, 8 a.m. we will begin to assemble at the old Kmart parking lot in Raton, NM. The Group will begin leaving for Sugarite Canyon at 9 a.m.. We will, of course, follow all masking and distance requirements.
We all want to get out of the house and have some safe family fun. This is a very beautiful drive and you will see very rarely seen parts of both Colorado and New Mexico. Basically, you are driving behind Fishers Peak. This is a county road and as such we can not charge anyone to travel on it, however, we request a $20 donation per vehicle for the animal shelters. A map of the route will be provided at the start of the rally. This is a 4 wheel drive road only. For more information call Lloyd at 719-846-2611.
Child Development Associate scholarships available
DENVER — The Colorado Department of Human Services Office of Early Childhood, in partnership with Child Care Innovations-Red Rocks Community College and Mesa County Public Health, is offering scholarships to early childhood professionals to earn or renew their Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential. Offering CDA credential scholarships will help to improve the quality of the early care and education workforce by attracting and retaining highly qualified professionals.
The scholarship will cover the training costs and assessment fees for approximately 220 new CDA candidates and assessment fees for approximately 70 renewal candidates. The scholarship application is open and available now, in English, Spanish and Arabic.
The CDA is the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education. Earn- ing a CDA credential helps to ensure early childhood professionals are prepared to nurture the emotional, physical, intellectual and social development of children.
Funding for the scholarships is part of the $33.5 million Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five (PDG B-5) Renewal that Colorado received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families and the U.S. Department of Education.
There is no deadline to apply for a scholarship. Funds are limited, so applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice. serving Huerfano and Las Animas County, is looking for caring seamstresses that would volunteer to help craft simple bears out of fabric that belonged to a loved one that has passed on. The bears can provide comfort to people of all ages and the fabric will remind them of their beloved. It is a great project and a great way to be involved in Hospice work. Fall Show and reception at SPACe
LA VETA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council invites everyone to the opening reception for the Fall Show, with featured artists Rebecca Meyers, Hugh Keating and Carrie Fox this Saturday, Sept. 5, between 5 – 7 p.m. Due to Health Dept. requirements, only 10 people at a time are allowed inside, face coverings, and social distancing are required, so no refreshments. The show will be on display until Oct. 3.
Rebecca Meyers is showing an amazing collection of Native American and African cultures’ masks, created from clay and re-purposed materials. Along the same lines, Gary Weston has new fantastical works also from re-purposed materials. Hugh Keating is showing some of his crayon and acrylic works featuring loosely rendered architectural scenes on canvas, and Carrie Fox has included con- temporary embroidery and photography “sketches” inspired by the rivers and wildlife in Huerfano and Las Animas counties. Other area artists sharing their original art are Kathy Hill, Ann Gethen, Cathy Mullens, Pat Newell, Karen Voepel, Kenny Schneider, Barb Kowalik, Jim Lambert, Gordon “Shorty” Schockey, Martha Lancaster, and Linda Shelley.

MoF call for artists for “COVID-19 Crisis or Opportunity” show
WALSENBURG — We are planning a new exhibit “COVID- 19 Crisis or Opportunity – Artists Response Group Exhibition,” September 11 thru November 30. There is still time to submit your work. The theme is creativity in the time of COVID-19, the works do not need to represent the virus or its negative consequences. The theme is open ended – what you produced during the shut down? (film, video, sculpture, fabric art, paintings, prints etc.). Please send me or Brendt images of the works you would like to exhibit, if you are local perhaps you will be able to drop the works off in the next couple of weeks (please make an appointment – 719- 738-2858 or email: mcberger@museumoffriends.org or brendtberger@earthlink.net). All works will be considered for inclusion and we will discuss the postage options available if you are interested.

Ricky Tims presents new novel at book signing event
LA VETA — Southern Colorado quilter and musician, Ricky Tims, will launch his fantasy novel for the young and young at heart in a one-day book signing of his newly-released novel, Lizzy Albright and the Attic Window, Saturday, Sept. 12, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Tims Art Retreat Center, 105 W Ryus Avenue.
The event will be held outdoors in the front courtyard. Social distancing will be enforced, and attendees are required to wear masks.
The fantasy novel, co-written by Ricky Tims and Kat Bowser, will be available for sale at the event. Ricky offers to personalize and autograph books upon request and will allow socially distanced photo opportunities. The story is targeted to middle grades and young adults of all ages. It has been described as Harry Potter meets The Wizard of Oz meets Alice in Wonderland. The story’s heroine is Lizzy Albright, a red-headed, freckle-faced girl from Overland Park, Kansas, who is celebrating her tenth birthday on Christmas Eve 1964.
The book includes an antique quilt, a talking goose, and the cursed Kingdom of Ailear, and many unexpected twists and turns. American Legion Blood Drive / Vietnam Veteran Commemoration
WALSENBURG — The American Legion, Post 16 will be host- ing a Community Blood Drive on National POW/MIA Remembrance Day, Friday, September 18, 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Avenue. It is highly recommended that if you desire to donate blood that you make an appointment by calling Vitalant at 1-800-365- 0006, ext. 2 or online at www.Vitalant.org. If you use the online option, you can fill out a medical questionnaire to bring with you on the date of the appointment. The American Red Cross has determined that there is a nationwide Blood shortage and your donation would be greatly appreciated.
Additionally we will be honoring Vietnam War Era Veterans that served in the military between November 1, 1955 and May 15th, 1975. Veterans that served during that period can come to the Community Center and pick up a Commemorative Pin, Certificate and “Thanks” from a grateful Nation for your service. To remember the Prisoners of War (POW) and Missing In Action (MIA) a small table will be set up in the Gymnasium to memorialize the over 81,900 US Service Members of our military still Missing or Unaccounted for from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War and other conflicts.

Tire collection event in Walsenburg
WALSENBURG — Last year the “tire roundup” was for the 81055 La Veta area. This year it is for 81089 Walsenburg area. The event will be on Saturday, September 26, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City of Walsenburg Public Works garage parking lot, 525 S. Albert.
Each household is limited to nine passenger auto or light truck tires. Proof of 81089 residence will be needed. If you have tires that are larger than 22 inches in diameter, or tires with rims in, call ahead and leave a message at 303-449-6483 so that we can make arrangements with the private hauler to accept them. This collection event is not open to any commercial entity or tire business.
This year’s “tire roundup” will be conducted by volunteer members of the Huerfano County2 Road Clean Up Committee just as the La Veta event last year. This collection is a free service of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment

Trinidad School District 1 announces universal free breakfast and lunch
TRINIDAD — Trinidad School District 1 is participating in a Universal Lunch and School Breakfast Program for the current school year. If your children attend TSD 1, breakfast and lunch will be available to them at no charge. All students enrolled at this school may participate.
Studies show that children who are not hungry perform better in school. By providing lunch to all children at no charge, we are hoping to create a better learning environment for our students.
The school breakfasts and lunches we serve follow U.S. Dept. of Agriculture guidelines for healthy school meals. The School Breakfast and Lunch Program cannot succeed without your support; please encourage your children to participate in the school meal programs.
Meals will be served to all students at no charge regardless of eligibility status. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and the on- line learning students can pick up meals at the Eckhart Elementary School ONLY. We will not be providing meals for anyone other than enrolled students in our district. Adults may still purchase a meal for $3.75.

PWP Bags & Brews river cleanup –
TRINIDAD — Join us for a COVID-19 friendly, socially distanced river cleanup gathering on the Purgatoire River, followed by fun & drinks Saturday, Sept. 5, 10 a.m. at Cimino Park . Come clean up the river, get out of the house, and see some new faces that aren’t your family members or your cat!
Whether you’ve been waiting all winter and spring to get out and do something great for the river, or you are just sick of being cooped up in isolation – whatever your reason we’d love to have you! This fun monthly social(ly distanced) event consists of spending a couple hours in good company cleaning up the Purgatoire River and filling bags with trash, then we head over to a local pub or restaurant for some refreshment!
Trash bags, brand new gloves, factory-sealed bottles of cold water, washed safety vests, disinfecting wipes are provided. Participants should bring whatever additional personal protective gear you would like – sunscreen, hat, mask, personal water bottle, your own gloves, etc.. Paws in the Park canceled but low cost vaccinations available
TRINIDAD — Due to the coronavirus pandemic, NAAWA will not be hosting Paws in the Park during Labor Day week- end this year. We know that many pets rely upon the Paws in the Park event for annual vaccinations, microchips, and city licensing. Please know that pet’s needing vaccines, microchip- ping, or city licensing can still get them at our daily low-cost clinic. Please make an appointment for your pet by calling 719-680-2385 so that your pet will be up to date on everything they need. Know also that we are exploring the option of host- ing a similar event that will be combined with Santa Paws for mid-fall. But please do not wait to get your pet vaccines – it is very important for them to be protected against disease.

Raton Recycling Center
RATON — The Raton Regional Recycling Hub Facility, Armex Building, 420 East 4th Ave. is currently limited to the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on an as-needed basis for large loads of materials (call 575-445-9181). The Center will be open Saturday, Sept. 5. Check back for information on additional hours. We are working on acquiring collection trailers, which are expected to be spread around the area and be available for daily deposits of materials.
Accepted Materials: Corrugated cardboard and brown paper bags; mixed paper including junk mail, magazines, and newspapers; plastic #1 bottles with necks, caps, and labels like water and soda bottles or salad dressing; plastic #2 bottles like laundry detergent, milk, and juice jugs (no motor oil products); steel / tin cans clean soup, vegetable, pet food, and sauce con- tainers; aluminum beverage cans, clean food containers, pie pans, and foil. In Raton, there are non-governmental organizations where you can take selected recyclables. Citizens for the Developmentally Disabled, 230 E 4th Avenue, will pay a variable rate for aluminum cans and some types of copper. Call them at 575-445-5674 for collection days and times.
Hungry Hearts lunch on Saturdays
RATON — Hungry Hearts will resume serving lunch every Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul thrift store location, 401 S. 4th St. Free lunches will be served on a drive-through, take-out only basis from 12 to 1 p.m. (while supplies last, first come- first served). Walk-up guests will be served as well. We ask that all guests, whether drive up or walk up, please wear masks. As always, lunches are free and anyone is welcome. Drive-through guests should enter from the north end of the thrift store parking lot.

RATON — The next meeting of the Colfax County Rapid Response volunteer firefighting community based organization will be to- night, Thursday, Sept. 10, 7 p.m. at the Colfax County Courthouse, 230 North 3rd Street. Currently we engage in Wild land and Structural fires. When called upon we serve a civic duty, which is to protect the communities and citizens in Colfax County. 44th Annual InBank Virtual Exhibition & Sale
RATON — The 44th Annual InBank Exhibition and Sale will be virtual this year. Artists can drop off works Friday, September 11, 12 – 4 p.m. at The Old Pass Gallery, 145 S. 1st Street. Masks are required when dropping off work.
The show opens online Tuesday, Sept. 15, through Friday, September 18. Since the show will be virtual this year due to statewide mandates and COVID safe practices, there will not be any in-person viewing of the show and there will also not be a reception this year. However, the show must go on, so we will be selling all pieces through our online gallery. This will give our artists a nationwide audience.
