Expect CPW helicopter flights in December

OUR WORLD — Beginning Nov. 30, Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologists will assess deer and elk populations by conducting low-altitude helicopter flights in southeast Colorado, west of Interstate 25.
Then, in mid- to late-December, biologists will launch similar helicopter flights in the southeastern plains of Colorado to the east of I-25.  Southeast Region residents can expect low-flying helicopters that spend a small amount of time in a specific area and then move on searching for more deer, elk, moose and bighorn sheep.

The flights beginning Nov. 30 will target Park and Fremont counties before sweeping into El Paso and Teller counties, north of U.S. Highway 50, and then through Lake and Chaffee counties.  Then the biologists will fly south through Pueblo, Custer, Huerfano and Las Animas counties.

The eastern flight plan calls for helicopters to tour along the South Republican River drainage from Flagler to the Kansas state line. Then the helicopters will turn south into Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties followed by tours of Kiowa, Prowers and Baca counties.

The helicopter surveys will conclude with flights along the Arkansas River from the Kansas state line to Colorado Highway 71 and southwest along the Purgatoire River.

If the weather permits, CPW biologists hope to conclude their herd assessment flights by early January.  For more information on CPW’s wildlife population objectives, visit cpw.state.co.us/ThingsToDo/pages/HerdManagementPlans.aspx

Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice is planning a fall volunteer training, Friday November 13 (note date change) in Trinidad.  We are seeking volunteers both for Huerfano and Las Animas Counties.  There are many roles individuals can fill that provide invaluable support not only to patients, but perhaps even more so to families.  In home volunteers may spend a few hours a week providing companionship, respite for family members, reading to patient, helping record their stories and the all-important role of being a good listener.  All volunteer work does not need to be done in the home; errands can be run, weeds pulled, a dog walked, a meal cooked, administrative help in the office are just a few of the many other things that keep hospice wheels turning  If you want to be part of an amazing organization doing great work please give me a call.  There is a place for everyone. Please contact: Sandy Dolak; sdolak@mtrosehealthandhospice.com; call or text:  719-251-1271

PWP Brews Monthly River Cleanup

TRINIDAD — Join us the first Saturday of every month for good times and a good cause along the Purgatoire River!  Meet Saturday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. at the row of flags by the train at Safeway Parking lot.  We are a COVID-19 friendly, socially distanced group.  Come out for good times along the river – meeting new community members and working together to clean up our river, then heading to a local pub or restaurant to celebrate our efforts!
The weather might be getting a little cooler but that’s ok – all the more reason to throw on extra layer, get out of the house, and see some new faces that aren’t your family members or your cat!

Philosophy Café via Zoom

TRINIDAD — Join us for a spirited conversation about things philosophic.  We will convene via Zoom Meeting on Monday, Nov. 9, 5 p.m.. Email tom.potter@trinidad.co.gov to register.  You’ll receive a return email with details about how to join the meeting.
This session of Philosophy Café will be an interesting one.  The topic is cognitive bias.  It has to do with the strategies we humans employ to sort out and act on all of the information coming into our lives.  These strategies are absolutely essential for us to successfully process the information we confront every day.  However, each of the strategies has serious draw-backs.  Most of them have to do with filtering information, implying that we are losing much of the information in the process.  Knowing what these strategies are, and learning to identify them as we do our thinking, will hopefully keep us from coming to erroneous conclusions or making the wrong decisions.

SCRT becomes Main Street Live!  Seeks new volunteers

TRINIDAD — SCRT, along with many other organizations hit hard by this year’s events, has had to rethink how to do business in order to survive.  During the past several months, the SCRT Board has been laying the groundwork to move in a new direction and to focus on community theatre rather than repertory theatre.  With seating space greatly reduced at this point in time, this makes the most sense to help make all events affordable for the theatre as well as attendees.
We believe that Main Street LIVE reflects the concept of the theatre being MORE than just a venue for plays.  The theatre will be branching out with comedy shows, musical acts, business conferences, game nights, talent shows, and any other events that will help promote and enhance the role of Main Street LIVE as “your” community theatre.
Since we are community based, Main Street LIVE is looking for people who are interested in participating in our new direction.  If you are one of them, please stop by the office, 131 W. Main Street, and fill out an information card indicating your area of interest.  Or send an email to info.scrtheatre@gmail.com .  We are excited and hope you will join us in this new adventure.  For more information visit the new website:  www.mainstreetlive.org or contact Gloria Hall gloria.scrtheatre@gmail.com or info.scrtheatre@gmail.com .

The district wishes to commission an artist or artist team to develop a unique project in celebration of this event. The project budget is $1,500.00

Mental Health Colorado will host a series of candidate forums ahead of election day with one goal: ensuring all Colorado voters are confident that anyone they are voting for will lead us in the right direction on mental health.

During each forum, Mental Health Colorado will ask candidates questions about what’s at stake for mental health in this election, why voting down the ballot matters for mental health, and what supporting improved mental health across the lifespan looks like from the perspective of the office they seek.

District Attorney and Board of Education – Tuesday, Oct. 13, 12 p.m.

OUR WORLD — Are you interested in learning more about production, processing and selling high quality meat through diverse market channels? Would you like new ways to manage risk in your livestock business and improve your profit- ability? If the answers are yes, then you’ll want to check out the Western Meat School.

The Niche Meat Processor Assistance Network (NMPAN), an Extension program housed at Oregon State University, is collaborating with Colorado State University and other institutions to offer this 6-week class. Funded by Western Extension Risk Management Education grants and the Globetrotter Foundation, the Western Meat School is an accessible and affordable way for farmers and ranchers to learn the most practical aspects of producing and marketing meat while deepening their understanding of the full niche meat supply chain. You can attend classes at one of 4 sites in Colorado: Montrose, Rocky Ford, Pueblo or Colorado Springs, or from your own home computer.

Time is running out to respond to the 2020 Census

OUR WORLD — Don’t miss your chance to get counted in the 2020 Census. Households that have not been counted are encouraged to respond today, as time is running out.

Census takers in Colorado are currently following up with households that have not yet responded – and it’s making a difference. More than 96% of Colorado housing units have been accounted for so far. We urge Coloradans to cooperate with census takers to make sure everyone living their household as of April 1, 2020, is counted.

It has never been easier to respond on your own, whether online, over the phone or by mail — all without having to meet a census taker. This is the first year the census has been con- ducted primarily online, which has helped with responses during the pandemic.

Census takers can be easily identified by a valid government ID badge with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date on the badge.

The Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are working together to protect the health and safety of the public and our employees. Census takers are trained to follow CDC recommendations.

Ways to respond now: Online at 2020census.gov; by phone at 844-330-2020 in English and 12 Non-English languages; by mail using the paper questionnaire mailed to non- responding addresses

Mental Health Colorado to host online candidate forums

DeNVeR — As a nonpartisan organization, Mental Health Colorado doesn’t endorse candidates, but the nonprofit advocacy group is educating candidates and constituents from all parties about the urgency of supporting healthier minds across the lifespan for all Coloradans. Mental Health Colorado will host a series of candidate forums ahead of election day with

one goal: ensuring all Colorado voters are confident that anyone they are voting for will lead us in the right direction on mental health.

During each forum, Mental Health Colorado will ask candidates questions about what’s at stake for mental health in this election, why voting down the ballot matters for mental health, and what supporting improved mental health across the lifespan looks like from the perspective of the office they seek. The dates for the forums are as follows:

State House – today, Thursday, Oct. 1, 12 p.m.
District Attorney and Board of Education – Tuesday, Oct. 13, 12 p.m.

Registration is live, and the forums are free to attend. Register at: https://www.mentalhealthcolorado.org/event/2020-candidate-forums. Mental Health Colorado has a platform on their website where candidates can submit a statement regard- ing their respective mental health priorities. Candidates also have the option to consult with Mental Health Colorado staff about policy priorities for mental health. The platforms, consultations, and forums are a part of Mental Health Colorado’s goal to make sure mental health is on every ballot.

A New Meat School coming to a town or computer near you!

OUR WORLD — Are you interested in learning more about production, processing and selling high quality meat through diverse market channels? Would you like new ways to manage risk in your livestock business and improve your profitability? If the answers are yes, then you’ll want to check out the Western Meat School.

The Niche Meat Processor Assistance Network (NMPAN), an Extension program housed at Oregon State University, is collaborating with Colorado State University and other institutions to offer this 6-week class. Funded by Western Extension Risk Management Education grants and the Globetrotter Foundation, the Western Meat School is an accessible and af- fordable way for farmers and ranchers to learn the most practical aspects of producing and marketing meat while deepening their understanding of the full niche meat supply chain. You can attend classes at one of 4 sites in Colorado: Montrose, Rocky Ford, Pueblo or Colorado Springs, or from your own home computer.

All speakers will be brought to you via the Zoom webinar platform. Classes cover marketing, production, and process- ing topics – all critical for direct marketing high-quality meat. Classes will also include a live beef animal evaluation and yield analysis demonstration with Nathan Parker of the Oregon State University Clark Meat Science Center, and similar “hoof to rail” demonstrations on pig and lamb carcasses at the University of Wyoming Meat Lab. Participants will receive a text and gain access to a resource guide, recorded videos, and optional add-on modules, one on hogs (breeds, forages and finishing) and another on meat pricing.

Registration is open now, the deadline to enroll is October 28th. Classes begin on November 4th and run every Wednesday evening through December 16th (skipping Thanksgiving week). Visit the Western Meat School website to learn more and enroll. For more information, please contact Martha Sullins, Colorado State University Extension, at martha.sullins@colostate.edu.
