Free COVID-19 testing

WALSENBURG — The Health Department has expanded FREE COVID-19 testing in Huerfano County.  This free COVID-19 test  is available to all members of the public, regardless of symptoms.  No Insurance Required
Please call for an appointment.  Testing will be available on:  Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  Appointments are required for testing, call 719-738-2650 for an appointment.  The Las Animas/Huerfano Health Department office address is:  119 E. 5th Street.

Discussion pods at La Veta Library

LA VETA — Discussion pods alternate each Thursday at 2 p.m. between book and movie discussions.  Come talk about what you are reading/watching or your favorite recommendation!  Sign-up opens each Monday for that Thursday’s Discussion Pod.  Stop by the front desk or call 742-3572 to reserve your space!

Huerfano County Democrats zoom meeting tonight

HUERFANO COUNTY — The next meeting of the central committee of the Huerfano County Democratic Party will be tonight, Thursday, Nov. 19, 6 p.m. via Zoom.  Email Dale Lyons at huerfanodems100@gmail.com for an invitation.
We will be discussing the reorganization in March 2021 when all the executive committee will be elected.  Other topics will include fundraising, preparing for 2022 and other important subjects.  Please join us!

Walsenburg community improvement projects every Friday

WALSENBURG — Join the Mayor at Heritage Park every Friday 11 am – 1 pm for community oriented improvement projects.  There are countless little things we can do to make things better and the Mayor is confident that one of them has your name on it!  Come have fun and become part of the solution!

Thanksgiving food drive at FNB ends Friday

TRINIDAD/WALSENBURG — Give back this year by donating to the First National Bank’s Thanksgiving Food drive.  Due to COVID-19 this year we are requesting cash donations to give gift cards to those in need.  Please make checks payable to The First National Bank in Trinidad.  Bring your donations to any FNB  branch by Friday, Nov. 20.

Judicial center opening

WALSENBURG — The new judicial center will be open Friday, November 20.  The county administration is excited to unveil the building to the community.  The county is still deciding if the grand opening will be online only or will have some in person component.  There will be a virtual walk through either way. Water Conservancy District Board meeting

Gift of Art Show at SPACe Gallery

Waste transfer now taking electronics

WALSENBURG — The waste transfer station is now taking electronic waste (computers, phones, printers etc.) for a nominal fee.  Paint waste will soon be taken there as well! Stay tuned for updates!

Huerfano holiday decorating contest

HUERFANO COUNTY —Bachman & Associates, KSPK, and The Spanish Peaks Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to bring you the Deck the Halls Holiday Contest!  We will be holding an old fashion home holiday lighting decoration contest throughout Huerfano County.
KSPK radio reaches communities as far as two hours away, lets light up Huerfano County and bring people to our community to shop local, spend the night, and enjoy our many delicious restaurants!

Huerfano “shop local” promotion

HUERFANO COUNTY — During December the Spanish Peaks Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring “Shop Local” throughout Huerfano County.  Come join the fun, shop local, eat local, and support local businesses!  For more information contact the Spanish Peaks Chamber of Commerce.
Also, come join Santa Claus in downtown La Veta on December 5, 12, and 19, 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 3:30 p.m..  Enjoy fun photo opportunities including frosty the snowman and Santa’s elves at 215 South Main Street under the covered porch outside Crafted in Colorado.  Social distancing and masks will be required.
Walsenburg will enjoy Santa and his helpers with hot Chocolate and photo opportunities also;  dates and times TBD!

WALSENBURG — Although there will be no open house held at the Huerfano County Branch in Walsenburg or The Loan Production Office in Raton this year, residents are encouraged to stop by to pick up your calendar, which will be available starting Friday, December 4 at all branch locations in Trinidad, Walsenburg and Raton.  The 2021 calendar is distributed as a free gift to the community while supplies last.

La Veta holiday arts fundraiser –Cancelled for 2020 donations still  accepted

LA VETA — Each December since 2008 the La Veta arts community has held an end of year culinary fund raising event.  The first three years the funds went toward the Spanish Peaks Arts Council’s (SPACe) building expansion.  Those inaugural events were so successful and well received that the fund raiser continued.  The funds raised pay for the Hwy 160 “Art Galleries” signs, provide art scholarships to locals and supplemental funds for La Veta youth-oriented art activities, e.g. Fridays for Fun, put on by the La Veta School of the Arts (LVSA), SPACe’s Youth Art Workshops, as well as contribute to the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts (FCPA) and its Show Choir and to the La Veta Public Library’s Scary Story contest.
Unfortunately, this event will not be held this year due to COVID-19, but we plan to do it next year.

Free COVID-19 testing

TRINIDAD — The Health Department and Mt. San Rafael Hospital have scheduled additional FREE COVID-19 Community Testing today, Thursday, Nov. 19, 1 to 5 p.m. and
Friday, Nov. 20, 1 to 5 p.m. at Las Animas County Justice Center, 2309 E. Main Street.  Testing is open to Las Animas or Huerfano County residents who desire a test.  There are no identification or insurance documents required.

“FaLaLa Shop Local Holiday  Campaign” sign up by Friday

TRINIDAD — The Shop Local Holiday Campaign, sponsored by City of Trinidad Tourism Board, Historic Main Street Board, Southeast Colorado Small Business Development Center, and Las Animas Co. Chamber of Commerce is an effort to support and generate spending in our local businesses during the holiday season.  This is FREE for all businesses that would like to participate.    Businesses must agree that they are willing to distribute tokens as outlined in the program as well as redeem the gift certificates for up to $20, understanding that they will be reimbursed at the end of the campaign.  This is the plan:
• Beginning on Black Friday, November 27 and continuing through January 1, 2021 we invite the businesses in our community to participate in the Shop Local/Shop Small Campaign.
• Businesses will receive a flyer that they must display in their window indicating that they are a participating member of the campaign.
• Businesses will be given tokens to hand out to their customers
• Businesses will give each customer one token per sales transaction totaling $20 or more.
• After the customer receives 5 tokens, they may redeem the tokens for a $20 Holiday gift certificate to spend in participating businesses.

Corazon de Trinidad business holiday decorating contest

TRINIDAD — The Corazon de Trinidad Historic Main Street Board and the City of Trinidad Presents “DECK THE HALLS” Business Spirit Decorating Competition.   This holiday season the downtown businesses that enter the Deck the Halls decorating contest will be competing for 6 Prizes of $1000.00.  Also, this holiday season, all who vote on the decorated business on the TRINIDAD HISTORIC MAIN STREET Facebook page will be entered into a drawing for prizes

The application period is: now through Tuesday, Dec. 1, and the judging period will be Dec. 4 through Dec.25, and on-site judging by the Trinidad Arts Commission will be Dec. 10 through Dec. 17.  Eligibility requires the decorations to be up no later than December 1.   Lights must stay on daily from dusk to 9 p.m., and they must be displayed Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.

All Trinidad municipal buildings closed until further notice

TRINIDAD — Out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of the public and staff, all City of Trinidad municipal buildings will be closed to public access until further notice.  Two employees who work at City Hall have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.  All business should be conducted either by phone or on-line.  You may email the City Clerk at audra.garrett@trinidad.co.gov with questions.

Virtual CRAFT MOB seeks crafters

TRINIDAD — Trinidad Historic MainStreet is hosting a virtual CRAFT MOB on Monday Nov. 30, 6-8p.m..  Local crafters will be presenting their Christmas Crafts for sale.  The event will be broadcast live on Facebook Live and Youtube-Trinidad Times TV 71 and it will be rebroadcast on Comcast Channel 71.  Viewers can purchase items during the live broadcast or reach out to the crafters afterwards.  This event is being sponsored by TCHU Oxygen Bar.

“Survival is Insufficient” online, multimedia salon

TRINIDAD — The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District ushered in the Fall season by inviting “creatives” of all sorts to contribute to an online, multimedia salon, illustrating how creatives have continued to do their work during the pandemic. This Multimedia Salon is available online through Monday, Nov. 30.
The salon opened on September 22, and focuses upon creations by regional artists, and creatives of all sorts, including crafts, music, writing, theatrical performance, quilting, dance, painting, happenings, printmaking or any other creative medium based on the theme: “Survival is Insufficient.”

Bank plans open house in Trinidad and 2021 calendar distribution in other branches

TRINIDAD — During this time of year, you can be certain that temperatures drop, leaves fall, days get shorter, and The First National Bank in Trinidad is busy making final preparations for its 35th annual open house and calendar distribution.  The 2021 Historic Collector’s Series Calendar will be available on a first come, first served basis at the open house set for Friday, Dec. 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. only at the main bank in Trinidad.  Plans will be a little different this year with the desire to keep everyone safe and healthy.  Only six people will be allowed at a time in the bank lobby to pick up calendars and a prepackaged plate of cookies.  Drinks will not be served, masks will be required and social distancing will be practiced.

RATON — Hungry Hearts will resume serving lunch every Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul thrift store location, 401 S. 4th St.  Free lunches will be served on a drive-through, take-out only basis from 12 to 1 p.m. (while supplies last, first come-first served).  Walk-up guests will be served as well.  We ask that all guests, whether drive up or walk up, please wear masks.  As always, lunches are free and anyone is welcome.  Drive-through guests should enter from the north end of the thrift store parking lot.

Springer AA meeting

SPRINGER — AA meets every Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Springer, NM at 7 p.m. Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.

AA Meeting ~ Land of Enchantment Group (LOE)

RATON — Meetings are every Wednesday night,7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist in Raton.  Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.  There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self supporting through our own contributions.
A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

Al-Anon Meeting

RATON — Al-Anon comes to Raton thanks to support from the World Journal and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Raton.  Meetings are every Thursday, 6 p.m. at 240 Rio Grande.  Al-Anon is a self-supporting group that seeks to assist the family and friends of people who are abusing alcohol or other substances.  Come and give support, come, and be supported.  Questions?  970-568-6969.

RATON — The next food distribution will be Wednesday, Nov. 25,  11:30 a.m. – 1p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 300 S 3rd Street.  The food distribution is every other Wednesday.

Colfax County Rapid Response meeting

RATON — The next meeting of the Colfax County Rapid Response volunteer firefighting community based organization will be , Thursday, Nov. 26, 7 p.m. at the Colfax County Courthouse, 230 North 3rd Street.  Currently we engage in wildland and structural fires.
