Vote tallies hold in recount:

“Machines are correct”

by Sharon Niederman
COLFAX —  The state of New Mexico requires a vote recount be held when election results are either 1% or show a five vote or less difference. Colfax County 2023 elections produced four recounts, the highest number ever, according to Colfax County Clerk Rayetta Trujillo.

All four contested elections produced the same numbers in the recounts, with election results remaining the same. Consequently, James Jacob Crain is now Councilor at Large in Angel Fire; Luella Smith will serve as Springer Trustee at Large; Raton City Commission will seat Mark Honeyfield, with Ron Chavez leaving the Commission; and Dustin James Walton will replace Kathleen Honeyfield on the Raton School Board as Member at Large.

The state also requires at least one precinct audit. Trujillo explained that “by the luck of the draw” three precinct audits were held in this election: one each in Cimarron, Springer, and Raton, with counts standing. “This shows the machines are correct,” Trujillo said.
