GARDNER — Residents of the Gardner area attended a “help us find you” event, sponsored by the Upper Huerfano Fire Protection District, last week at the Raymond Aguirre Community Center in Gardner. This project is to pinpoint on a map the locations of residents’ houses, so firefighters can find the homes quickly in the event of an emergency. Too often in emergencies, it takes precious time finding the exact location of homes due to remote locations.
With this information, a master map will be made and kept for future reference. About 60 new locations were added to the database so this was worthwhile day.
Guests were served hotdogs, hamburgers, and soda, and it gave the people a chance to see their fire equipment and some lucky children had a chance to use a fire hose.
At the event they also held a recruiting drive. Fire Chief Lewis De Laura is asking for men and women to help their community by volunteering as members of the fire department. New members will have free training provided with necessary equipment and a good feeling for serving their community.
