Advocates Against Domestic Assault crisis line and support information

hUERFANo/LAS ANIMAS coUNTIES — Advocates Against Domestic Assault believes everyone has a right to be safe from threats and violence! They are there to help. Trinidad Office 719-846-9159 or Walsenburg Office 719- 738-0770 is here to help. Their 24 hour crisis hotline is available for anyone in need at 719- 846-6665. The National Hotline is 1-800-799- SAFE (7233) 1-800-787-3224 (TTY).

There is NO COST for services. AADA can help by offering: Crisis Intervention, Referrals, Support Group for Women and Children, Community Education, Domestic Violence Counseling, Parenting Class, Sexual Assault Advocacy, Legal Advocacy. There is TTY available. The crisis line is a confidential service. Temporary shelter is also available.

Support Group Information: Parenting every Tuesday, 4 to 5 pm. Support Group every Tuesday from 5 to 6 pm with Counselor from Health Solutions Support Group in Spanish the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month or at individual’s convenience with Bilingual Advocate. Francisco Fort Museum shifts to fall schedule

LA VETA — Francisco Fort Museum announces its fall hours: Thursday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm through Saturday, October 5, when the museum will be closed for the season. With October in mind – mark your calendars: The Crooked Hook Blacksmith will be on hand from 11 am to 3 pm on Oktoberfest (Saturday, October 5th). And, back by popular demand, PRISM Paranormal will be presenting a program on their recent research at the museum, from 3 to 4:30 pm at the La Veta Public Library, also on October 5. School groups are invited to arrange tours, presentations, and events at the museum Tuesdays through Fridays through the end of October. Additionally, private tours can be arranged with advance notice through the end of October. Call 719-742-5501.

 

AARP Smart Driver Course

WALSENBURG — The new four hour refresher course from AARP Driver Safety will be offered at the Spanish Peaks Library, Thursday, September 5, 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. We’ll take a one hour break for lunch, 12 to 1 pm. Learn valuable defensive driving skills, stay current with new rules of the road, the latest driving technologies and much more. Huerfano Soup at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA — The next Huerfano Soup, a monthly community-based potluck, will be held Thursday, September 5, 6 pm. The Soup is where participants, through this micro-granting dinner, assist a variety of projects in Huerfano County. A potluck item and a $5 donation make you eligible to vote on the evening’s presentations. As a diner, you will hear 3 five-minute pitches from community members who need funding for projects that are beneficial to the community. La Veta Schools hosts illegal substances presentation

LA VETA — La Veta Schools is hosting an ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES presentation by Lynn Riemer, September 5, 2019 at 6:00 pm in the Roger Brunelli Gymnasium. As an experienced chemist and prior member of the North Metro Drug Task Force in Colorado, Lynn’s experience and engaging style brings a real, personal, and vivid face to the issues presented by drug use. Discussion items include National and state statistics, how to recognize if your child is using, Current trends in high schools/teenage use, resources for parents, and Q&A Session. The public is welcome to attend this informative event.

 

Meet & Greet at Lathrop Park

WALSENBURG — Friday, September 6, Lathrop State Park will host a Meet & Greet. Get to know some of the newest members of the Lathrop State Park family and catch up with some of your old friends there. You can enjoy a complimentary root beer float and take part in a fun naturalist activity. The event is from 2 and 4 pm at the Visitor Center.

A park pass will not be required for those attending the open house at the Visitor Center, but will be required for anyone entering the rest of the park.

Dynamix concert at the Fox

WALSENBURG — The Historic Fox Theatre in Walsenburg is partnering with Downtown Revitalization to bring you a one-night only kick-off concert for Mountain Mining days, Friday, September 6, 8 to 11:30 pm. Mountain Mining Days is an annual celebration on Saturday, September 7. Dynamix is Walsenburg’s hometown favorite! Come celebrate the end of summer and get ready for Mountain Mining days!

WALSENBURG — The Sixth Annual Walsenburg end of summer celebration is set for Saturday, September 7, 11 am to 5 pm at 6th and Main Street. There will be food and craft vendors, a Kids zone, and more throughout the day. The Hot Rods and Vintage car show will be on display along 5th Street throughout the afternoon. Live music featuring Serpico and the Outlaws will be on the stage at Miners Plaza. Mountain Mining Day starts with a parade in downtown Walsenburg featuring the Fort Carson Marching Band, equestrian riders, floats, collectible cars, and more! Antlers and horns at Lathrop

WALSENBURG — On Saturday evening, September 7, Lathrop State Park Manager Stacey Koury presents Antlers & Horns, a hands- on presentation on Colorado’s antlered and horned animals. The program will begin at 6:30 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

In the event of rain, the presentation will be moved to the Visitor Center.

As always, any vehicle in the State Park must display a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Library for up to one week.

 

Gabrielle Louise at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA — Gabrielle Louise’s music is anchored deeply in folk and Americana, but un- deniably drawn to rich harmonies and melodic adventurism. Louise will be on stage Saturday, September 7, 7 pm at La Veta Mercantile. Her sound has the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell while also veering into the spirited and versatile delivery of fellow genre-hopping artist Eva Cassidy. Unafraid to take a musical escapade in the name of inspiration, Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next a smoky jazz chanteuse. WALSENBURG — The next Care ‘n Share food distribution for Huerfano County will be Tuesday, September 10, 10 to about 11:30 am at Delaney Hall on E 7th. Bring proper ID and bags or box for food. Food passed out on first come first serve basis. “This institution is an equal opportunity provider.”

 

Free legal clinic at Spanish Peaks Library

WALSENBURG — A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 4 to 5 pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Spanish Peaks Library, 415 Walsen Avenue. The next clinic will be Tuesday, September 10. By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. Walk-ins are welcome, and every- one will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis. Upcoming 2019 dates: October 8; November 12; December 10.

 

Monthly Huerfano GOP meeting

WALSENBURG — The Huerfano County Re- publican Committee will meet on Tuesday, September 10 at 6 pm at La Plaza Inn, 118 W. 6th St. in Walsenburg, for its monthly meeting.

After our meeting, please join us for a no-host dinner at La Plaza Inn. Come early at 5:30 pm for a meet and greet, and we will see you there.

 

SPBA Non-Profit Mixer

WALSENBURG — The Spanish Peaks Business Alliance (SPBA) will host a “Non-Profit Mixer” Wednesday, September 11, 4 to 6 pm at Museum of Friends. Join us for a networking mixer for local non-profits! Help our non-profit community develop lasting partnerships and find new ways to collaborate.

 

Free Educator’s Workshop: Teaching Geo-Literacy

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad History Museum, 120 S Chestnut St, is hosting an educators workshop, “Teaching Geo-Literacy” Friday, September 13, 1 to 4 pm. This event is limited to 15 participants. Art Car Parade

TRINIDAD — It’s time for the 2019 ArtoCade Extravaganza in Trinidad! The fun starts Saturday, September 14, 12 pm with a parade on Main Street. Following the parade, parade attend- ees can meet the cars and their makers and peruse the shops of various vendors, all of whom will be located right down- town!

TSJC President’s Office Art Show: Mescalero Sands

TRINIDAD — Trinidad State will host an art show of historic photos from the Mescalero Sands of eastern New Mexico in the President’s Office on the Trinidad Campus. The show will open with a reception on September 19 from 4 to 5 pm. The artist, Calvin Smith will be there to answer questions and light refreshments will be served. Then from 5 to 6 pm in the Pioneer Room, Smith will do a presentation on the months he spent over a period of years studying the area. Those who miss the reception can view the show during normal office hours until Thanksgiving in the Berg Building, Room 218.

Corazon Critter Show

TRINIDAD — The Corazon Gallery in Trinidad, Colorado will be accepting entries for The Critter Show on Wed. September. 25 from 10 to 5. Critters for this art show may be real or imaginative. The fee for entering is $10 per piece. The reception for The Critter Show will be Friday, Sept. 27 from 5 to 7:30 at the Corazon Gallery, 149 E. Main, Trinidad, Colorado. Bar NI Ranch Community Service Grant applications available now

LAS ANIMAS coUNTY — The Bar NI Ranch Community Service Fund is accepting grant proposals from both previous as well as new applicants. Grants may be awarded in the areas of education, youth development, environment and conservation, health and human services and civic or public benefit. Grant awards will be made to 501c3, non-profit organizations in the Purgatory Valley with projects that serve to inspire awareness, expand horizons, create independence, and foster personal growth. We strongly encourage projects focusing on youth and environmental education. We look for projects exploring creative ways to ignite the spirit, facilitate dreams and address root causes of problems rather than just treat affected conditions. Creative collaboration is strongly encouraged.

2nd Annual Boncarbo Poker Run

BoNcARBo — The 2nd Annual Boncarbo Poker Run, hosted by Boncarbo VFD Auxiliary and firefighters, will take place on Saturday, September 28, from 9 am to 6 pm. There will be two runs- the first by motorcycle or car, driving the Highway of Legends. The second run is off-road, through Spanish Peaks Country, to Ludlow and Gulnare Inn. ATVs must have a spark arrester.

Registration is from 9-11 am, runs leave 10-11:30. The event begins and ends at the Boncarbo VFD 14589 CR 57.7. Last hand starts at 4 pm. Riders are $25, additional hands are $15 each. Free private well water testing

ANGEL FIRE — NMED and NMDOH will be offering up to 200 free water tests for private wells serving homes not connected to a public water utility to residents of Angel Fire and Taos and surrounding communities in Colfax and Taos Counties. The event is open to anyone with a private well.

Suicide Prevention walk

RAToN — The Colfax County Health Council presents a Suicide Prevention Walk, Saturday, September 14, 9 am at Roundhouse Memorial Park. The cost is $10 per person or $25 for a team of four; to sign up contact Ashley Vigil at 575- 707-0371, 575-445-8191, Ericka, or Mona at 575-445-2379.

RAToN — Raton Parks and Trails final walk this summer for their “A Prescription for Better Health, Come walk with us!” program is the easy “Walk with a Dog!” Saturday, September 14, 9 am. The Magical Piano of John Walker at the Shuler Saturday, September 14

RAToN — The Shuler Theater in Raton is proud to present “The Magical Piano of John Walker” on Saturday Septemeber 14, from 7 pm to 9 pm. Walker and his band will play familiar favorites including Western Classics and more in the legendary “bent note” style of the great Floyd Cramer. Cramer’s rock ‘n’ roll style of piano playing and distinctive slide-note was possibly the biggest influence on post-50s country music. See ad page 25 for more information.
