The Purgatory 4 Adventure Relay
COLFAX/LAS ANIMAS— The Purgatory 4 Adventure Relay, Saturday, Sept. 9 challenges competitors across the country to go halfway to hell and back.  Run through the rugged terrain of Sugarite Canyon State Park in Northeastern New Mexico, paddle a course on Lake Maloya at 7,500 feet, bike up to 8,500 feet over San Fransisco Pass and into Southern Colorado, and prove your prowess on a challenging shotgun shooting course at Trinidad State College’s Prator Gun Range. Huerfano County Historical Society Meeting
WALSENBURG— The Huerfano County Historical Society will hold its next meeting on Thursday, Sept. 7,  4 p.m. at the Huerfano Heritage Center, 114 W. 6th St. All members and the public are invited to attend.

Coal Camps, Cow Camps
WALSENBURG— Sandy Dolak with be at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg every Friday in Sept. from 1 – 3 p.m. to collect pictures and stories of the miners, ranchers and cowboys that shaped the legacy of Huerfano County. I can scan the pictures and hand them right back to you. This is such an important story to be told and will be presented to the community on November 4 at the county community center in Walsenburg. Mountain Mining Days
WALSENBURG—The Mountain Mining Days festival will be Saturday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.  Live music, vendors, fun for the whole family. 9/11 Flag presentation
WALSENBURG— The Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aries and Aux 1187 is inviting the public to attend a flag presentation put on by the American Legion, on Monday, Sept. 11, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. at the Eagles Hall in Walsenburg. We hope that you can come and attend this special event to honor the fallen of 9/11.

Experimental Drawing and Painting at LVSA
LA VETA— The La Veta School of the Arts presents Peggy Zehring’s fun, abstract, experimental drawing and painting one week or two week class which will be happening at The La Veta School of the Arts in La Veta, CO from Monday, Sept. 11, through Friday, September 15. Draw with charcoal and then use the images you created spontaneously to unfold abstract paintings. You’ll also learn color mixing, recognizing and capitalizing on your own marks, compositional excellence and much more. Free legal self help clinic
WALSENBURG— On Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2 – 5 p.m. there will be a free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.   Volunteer attorneys will answer questions and explain the process and procedure for all areas of Colorado civil law, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders.

LA VETA—  The Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble, Southern Colorado’s premier community choir, is calling all singers, young and old, experienced, or willing to become experienced, to join us as we prepare for our 2023 Christmas concert, starting Tuesday, September 12, 6:15 p.m. We had to put the kibosh on our summer program, so we are really rarin’ to go for our Christmas concert! Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses – all are WELCOME!  We have a few extra seats saved for sopranos, so don’t be shy!  We meet every Tuesday at 6:15 sharp at the La Veta United Methodist Church in La Veta. Huerfano Celebration at Fox Theatre
WALSENBURG— Warm Cookies of the Revolution and Huajatolla Heritage Foundation invite you to a great free event on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Fox Theatre in Walsenburg. Come celebrate what has been great about Huerfano County in the past; what is the hope for the future? American Legion Post 16 meeting
WALSENBURG— The Brian T. Chiquette Post 16 of the American Legion will have their monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 6 p.m. at the Walsenburg Housing Authority Office, 220 Russell Ave. in Walsenburg.  All veterans are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting. Fox Theatre Outdoor movie in Gardner

Clovis and Folsom Archaeological Sites presentation
LA VETA—  On Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2 p.m. at the La Veta Public Library Shirley L Shirley will be speaking about Clovis and Archaeological sites in Colorado.  The presentation will be followed by a visit to Francisco Fort’s Native American room to view the points on display. This event is free and open to the public sponsored by Francisco Fort Museum.
Ms Shirley is a retired Archaeologist who has worked for many federal agencies on excavations and surveys throughout the West. She currently resides in Trinidad, Co.

Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival
HUERFANO— Thursday, Sept. 21 – Sunday, Sept. 24. The Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival (SPICMF) is that, a Celtic music festival, but really so much more. We are more accurately a four day ‘destination-retreat’ where internationally respected artists and scholars not only perform in concert, but share their musical talent and knowledge in a full range of upwards of fifty plus workshops, demonstration talks, and ope (free) singing, dancing and playing sessions for all. Trail work Saturday
TRINIDAD— Trinidad Trails Alliance Second Saturday Trailwork will be working on the Boulevard & Riverwalk on Saturday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. We’ll meet at the flags near Safeway, bring gloves & water. Tools provided.
This month we’ll be working on the “Blue Heron” singletrack trail along the river in the Boulevard area as well as the “Trout Trail” leading from Safeway flags down to the river on the east side of the bridge. Expect general cleanup with lopping and raking, re-building the entrance to the singletrack trail, and trash pickup. Tailgate beverages to follow courtesy of TTA.

Noah’s Ark fundraiser
TRINIDAD— Come and meet Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association’s new Executive Director, Sue Fisher, tour the shelter and have some fun! Saturday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m. at 1921 E. Main Street in Trinidad.
Several of Trinidad’s well known “TOP DOGS” who have been at large for far too long, will be ARRESTED! At long last, the following individuals will be confined & placed in DOGGIE JAIL! Phil Rico – Mayor of Trinidad,  Jennifer Lay – Trinidad police Department, Las Animas County Sheriff’s Deputies, Trinidad Fire Department Fireman, Carol Cometto – Business Manager, Steve Ruger – Trinidad City Manager, Bonnie Aaron – Superintendent Trinidad School District One.
The public will have the opportunity to post bail for them. However, if you think they have not been in jail long enough, you can pay to keep them behind bars longer.

Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD— The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce the Second Saturday Poetry Series continues on Saturday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m. An Open Mic for poets and all literary souls, the Series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at the Space to Create Commons, 218 West Main St. The evening begins with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. This event is free and open to the public. Featured this month is Colorado author and poet, Kim Krisco.

Trinidad Community Chorale

Hybrid Wilderness First Responder course

TRINIDAD— Are you prepared to have any challenge, anywhere? Join Wilderness Medical Associates International for their training in wilderness medicine hybrid course. The Hybrid WFR is the newest in our line-up of course offerings and includes an e-learningmodule and an in-person module. The e-learning module requires 30+ hours of online, computer-based learning that must be completed prior to participating in 40+ hours of in-person learning over the course of five (5) days. The Hybrid WFR is suited for those new to wilderness medicine as well as those with some previous medical experience. This course is held Monday, Sept. 18 – Saturday, Sept. 23. Night Sky Viewing

CAPULIN— Saturday, Sept. 9, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Join us for an exceptional Dark Sky experience. Telescopes are provided to view the dark northeastern New Mexico skies. You will see planets, galaxies, nebula, and other amazing sights all with your own eyes. Capulin Volcano is at a higher altitude of over 6,000 feet. Nights can get chilly even in summer. A jacket, long pants, and closed toe shoes are recommended to attend a Dark Sky program. No reservations are needed. Dark Sky programs may be changed or cancelled due to weather. Capulin Volcano National Monument is located at 46 Volcano Hwy.

Astronomy Festival

CAPULIN— The Capulin Astronomy Festival will be held the weekend on Sept. 15 and 16. There will be programs in the evening with Park Rangers to learn about astronomy and check out the night skys with the telescope. Please dress accordingly as it can cool down quickly at night. 2nd Annual Recovery and Remembrance

RATON— On Saturday, Sept. 16, starting at 11 a.m. join the celebration of life at Ripley Park in Raton. Recovery

Springer youth play day

SPRINGER— Youth are invited to come play at the Colfax County Fairgrounds in Springer on Saturday, Sept. 16, entries open at 1 p.m. and the events start at 2 p.m. $5 per event or $50 for the annual family membership. Light concession will be available for purchase.

Toy Land Character contest
 
RATON— The Raton Lions Club is having a Toy Land Character Contest.  We invite contestants to use their talent to create new characters that will be displayed on Apache Avenue on the way to City of Bethlehem. Everyone is welcome to participate in this contest; individuals, groups, businesses, clubs, etc.
Judging of the characters will be on November 4 at 2pm at Climax Canyon.  All characters made and donated will be accepted and displayed during the Christmas holiday.  We ask that you put your name and date on the back of the character.

Senior Week at the Pueblo Zoo

PUEBLO—   The annual Senior Week presented by Health Solutions is back and bigger than ever. Seniors 65+ receive free admission, along with their
caregivers, during Senior Week September 10-16. Each day, Monday – Friday, Senior Week will feature coffee and donuts. Guests are welcome to enjoy the zoo at their own pace. Wednesday’s Senior Safari is the big shindig that brings
