Noxious weed workshop

WALSENBURG— The Upper Huerfano Conservation District in cooperation with the NRCS, CSU Extension and Huerfano County Noxious Weed Department will be holding a noxious weed workshop and weed walk on Friday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell in Walsenburg. Topics include: species ID, overview of control options & services available to landowners. Free lunch and educational materials will be provided. Fall Colors at Cuchara Mountain Disc Golf Tournament

CUCHARA— The 2023 Fall Colors Disc Golf Tournament presented by Bachman & Associates is a PDGA C-tier sanctioned tournament and part of the Competition Endowment Program to support the non-profit that maintains Cuchara Mountain Park. American Legion Post 16 Meeting

WALSENBURG— The Brian T. Chiquette Post 16 of The American Legion will have their monthly meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 6 p.m. at the Walsenburg Housing Authority Office, 220 Russell Ave. in Walsenburg.  All Veterans are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting. LVPL Movie matinee

LA VETA— The La Veta Public Library movie matinee for October will feature Academy Award winner Robert DeNiro in the hilarious comedy “About My Father”. Post-Spring Fire Talk – Five Years Later

LA VETA— Join La Veta Trails at La Veta Mercantile, 300 S. Main St., La Veta, on Thursday, Oct. 12, 6 p.m. for a Post-Spring Fire Talk – Five Years Later. Manuel Molles, Derek Sokoloski, and Mary Anne Nelson will present an update on ecosystem recovery five years after the Spring Fire. This talk is a follow-up to their discussions in 2018 and 2019 and will focus on ecosystem recovery across the Spring Fire burn scar along gradients of fire severity, including soil properties and regrowth and survival of herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees. Fire mitigation, flooding, erosion, and altered hydrology will also be discussed. Manuel is a Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico, Derek is the Southeast Area Manager of the Colorado State Forest Service, and Mary Anne is a Professor Emerita at the University of New Mexico. Fall Craft Festival

WALSENBURG— Come to Huerfano Nursery and Garden, 704 Walsen Ave in Walsenburg, on Friday Oct. 13, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 14, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. You’ll find local artists selling mosaics, yard art, home décor, jewelry, wildlife photography, and more! It’s a great time to stock up on one-of-a-kind holiday gifts all the while supporting our locals. Decorative pumpkins will also be available, as well as pumpkin carving for kids! SPLD Presents Flicks at the Library

WALSENBURG— Friday, Oct. 13, 1:30pm.  It’s back!  Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg will once again be showing movies in our meeting room with FREE popcorn!  This month we will be showing Hocus Pocus, starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as 3 witches seeking immortality and 3 teens who aim to stop them.  Don’t miss the fun!

Fall Colors Concert

CUCHARA— We are excited to announce our first Fall Colors Concert on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. We have a great lineup including the headliners and Southern Colorado hottest party band, the The Martini Shot along with the great Mason Davis and the Colorado Double Barrel Band. Of course, all proceeds benefit our work at Cuchara Mountain Park. Don’t miss it!

St. Mary’s Fall Festival

WALSENBURG— St. Mary Catholic Church in Walsenburg will celebrate its 2023 Fall Festival in Msgr. Delaney Hall, 121 E. 7th, on Sunday, Oct. 15 after the 10:30 Mass. Festivities will begin with a full spaghetti & meatball dinner, including garlic bread, salad, dessert and drink, from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 2 to 10. From 2 to 3:30 p.m., bid in on the “Purse Auction”, featuring treat-filled bags ranging from tool boxes to designer handbags.  At 3:45, they’ll announce the winners of the Cash Raffle with $500, $300, and $100 prizes. From 4:00 to 5:00, play Fun-Time Bingo and win White Elephant prizes.  All day, a Cake Walk, pumpkin painting, and sand-art activities will entertain the kids. Huerfano County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting

LA VETA— The Huerfano County Farm Bureau Board would like to invite you to attend the Huerfano County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting.  This is not limited to Farm Bureau members, but anyone is welcome who is interested in finding out more about the organization and its function.  The meeting will be on Saturday, Oct. 21, 11:30 a.m. at the La Veta Community Center located at 131 E. Ryus Ave.  Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a lasagna lunch and homemade desserts provided by Huerfano County Farm Bureau.  There will be speakers from the state office to give updates on programs. October Food Drive

TRINIDAD— During the month of October, the Trinidad History Museum is holding a canned food drive (human and pet!) to gather donations for Fishers Peak Soup Kitchen and Pet Assistance League Store. A donation drop-off will be available in the museum gift shop during opening hours, and if you bring canned food to any of Trinidad History Museum’s events this month, you’ll receive special discounts and goodies!  The hours for the Museum are Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Have questions? TRINIDAD— They’re gearing up over at A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art for our second annual Resonance show! Purgatoire River and Community Fall Cleanup Extravaganza

We’ll be cleaning up trash around the river and the community, and clearing overgrown vegetation and more improvements on the historic Trout Trail fishing access trail. Banned Book Event at the Library

TRINIDAD— Book banning has been a hot topic in the past few years. Intellectual Freedom and The Right to Read have historically been the core foundation of public libraries. But libraries are only part of the story. The Trinidad Public Library invites all members of the community to come to the library and join in a discussion of this important topic. This event is on Saturday, Oct. 7, 1 – 2 p.m. in the library’s Community Room.

Free Legal Assistance

TRINIDAD— The Carnegie Public Library in Trinidad is partnering with Colorado attorneys and Colorado Legal Services to offer free legal assistance on the second Tuesday of every month. Tuesday, Oct 10, 2 – 5 p.m. will be the next day for free legal assistance. Private conference with an attorney to discuss civil
matters only and open to all income levels. Come to the library to talk with an attorney via Zoom Meeting but please call the Library at 719-846-6841 to sign up

Double-Feature Fright Nights

TRINIDAD— If you can’t imagine celebrating this spooky season without viewing cinematic classics of the horror genre then Trinidad History Museum has got you covered. Featuring the shocking, suspenseful, and undeniably captivating, Double-Feature Fright Nights includes 4 full nights of back-to-back screenings dedicated to movies that chill the bones! These movie screenings will take place on the museum grounds Friday, Oct 13, 20, 27, and Tuesday, Oct. 31st, 6 – 9 p.m.

Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD— The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District Announces Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls.
The series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at The Commons at Space to Create, 218 West Main St. On Saturday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m. the evening will begin with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. This event is free and open to the public.

Jack-O’-Lantern Carving

TRINIDAD—  Tuesday, Oct. 17, 4:30 – 6 p.m. Bring your gourds or root vegetables and join the Trinidad History Museum for an evening of carving jack-o’-lanterns and learning about their eerie history! All tools will be provided, but for a cash or shelf-stable food donation, you can also carve one of the vegetables from Trinidad History Museum’s very own “pumpkin patch.” No tickets or reservations are required for this free spooky season event.

Lion’s Club free glasses day

RATON— The Raton Lion’s Club will be holding a free event open to anyone in our community on Saturday, Oct. 21, 9  – 11:45 a.m. at the Isabel Castillo Event Center located at 123 S. 2nd Street in downtown Raton. Those attending the event will be able to try on and order a FREE brand-new pair of eyeglass frames. Frames for men, women, and children will be available. Prescription single-vision lenses and lined bifocal lenses are included. Each person MUST to bring a current copy of their glasses prescription (no expired prescription will be accepted). No progressive or transition lenses are available.
