Ceremony for Fred A. Ettleman

COLORADO CITY— In honor of Lieutenant Colonel Fred A. Ettleman there will be a Dedication and Renaming Ceremony hosted by the VFW Post 7305 on Saturday, Oct. 28, 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend the ceremony emceed by Master Sergeant Garry Melchi, US Army Retired and Decorated Vietnam Veteran and will be held at 5445 Cuerno Verde Blvd, Colorado City (next to Lake Beckwith.

Beginning T’ai Chi Classes at LVSA

WALSENBURG— Often referred to as “the gentle art of yielding”, the ancient, slow moving Chinese practice of T’ai Chi Chuan is also healing in many ways.  New, beginning classes will be held beginning Saturdays, at 9 a.m. at The La Veta School of the Arts, 105 W Ryus – across from the town park.  Beginning classes will continue every Saturday morning from 9-10am during the month of October The cost is a donation of $5 per class or $20 for a month of classes.  For more information, call Peggy Zehring 719-742-5193, or e-mail PeggyZehring@msn.com or LVArtSchool@yahoo.com.

LVPL Science Symposium

LA VETA— The La Veta Library will host its second installment of the Science Symposium brought to you by Dr. Ed Donovan of La Veta on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2 p.m. This seminar will feature David Moore. PhD who had a 34 year career as a U.S. Geological Surveyor and who served our country as a helicopter pilot during the war in Viet Nam. His topic will be “Continents have not ALWAYS” been where they are today” and promises to be very enlightening .  Audience participation is encouraged and refreshments will be provided.

Dorca’s Circle Costume Contest

WALSENBURG— On Saturday, Oct. 28th, come to The Walsenburg Mercantile for the first annual Dorcas Circle Costume Contest.
1 – 2 p.m., browse our free costumes while supplies last, and get your face painted by Mrs. Flamingo!
2 – 3 p.m. Strut your stuff on the runway!
3 – 3:30 p.m.  Judges will announce winners, and 4 lucky folks will receive prize baskets sponsored by our incredible Mercantile vendors! LA VETA— Check out the Monster Halloween Dance at Skinny’s Diner and bar in La Veta on Saturday, Oct. 28, 6 p.m. Planet 2.0 will be playing some spooky tunes, be sure to wear your costume!

Eagles Ladies Auxiliary Brunch

WALSENBURG— The Ladies Auxiliary 1187 invites the community to join us for a brunch on Sunday Oct. 29, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main St. in Walsenburg. They will be serving hashbrowns, eggs, bacon, sausage, and green chili. Coffee or juice will be included with the cost of $7. We hope to see you there as your support is always appreciated.

CUCHARA— On Sunday, Oct. 29, 5:30 – 7 p.m. downtown Cuchara will be hosting an evening of fun, tricks and treats. With several local businesses participating this is sure to be spooky good time!

WALSENBURG— Check out the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg’s escape room, now through Tuesday, Oct 31st. Come in anytime and bring your friends and family!  Each team has 15 mins to solve their way out of the haunted house before time runs out!

Trick or Treat at SPRHC

WALSENBURG— Check out the Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center, 23500 US Hwy 160, Halloween Celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 6 – 8 p.m. There will be candy given away as well as games in the dining hall. Masks are required to enter, this keeps our veterans and residents safe during the flu season.

SPLD presents Teen Pizza

WALSENBURG— Every Wednesday, 4 – 6 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for PIZZA, provided by GubGub’s Pizza and Ice Cream! Teens are welcome to come hang with us after school every Wednesday, no catch, no demands just stop by and check out our library. We have Wii, computers, tablets, games, puzzles, music, friends, laughs and of course BOOKS!

FCPA Show Choir

LA VETA— Bet you thought you’d missed the opportunity—but you still have a chance to join this new season of the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir! There are no strangers here, only voices we haven’t met. Join the fun at our next rehearsal Wednesday, Nov. 1,  5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at Francisco Center of the Performing Arts, 127 West Francisco, La Veta. So take your fabulous voices out of the shower and join in preparing a show for early-March. The FCPA Show Choir is under the primary direction of Sam Sortore, but also includes the conducting experience of Peggy Arnold-Hoobler and Joanne Vargo. Let’s get together and see what happens. Science Seminars at LVPL

LA VETA— Mark your calendars for Thursday, Nov. 2,  2 p.m. when the La Veta Library welcomes La Veta resident Heloise Lynn,(PhD in Geophysics,  Stanford University). Heloise is a consulting geophysicist in the oil and gas industry and has worked on anisotropic reflection data for over 40 years. Bring your questions as we explore how the scientific method is used to help make decisions.  As always, free with refreshments.

Coal Camps and Cow Camps Gala

WALSENBURG—  On Saturday, Nov. 4, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m  at the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg there will be a celebration and reunion of the 57 nationalities that have contributed to the rich legacy of our area. A pictorial archive, guest speakers, displays and beans, cornbread, and cobbler for lunch. Please join us for Coal Camps and Cow Camps—How the miners, ranchers and cowboys shaped the legacy of Huerfano County and bring your pictures and stories to share! A collaborative effort of Huajatolla Heritage Foundation with support from Art in Society, San Isabel Electric Association and Basin Electric Power Co-op. Photos needed for Smithsonian Exhibit-Crossroads

TRINIDAD— The public’s help is needed to find photos, portraits, sketches, paintings of the last 100 years of Trinidad, Colorado’s Mayors for an upcoming companion event to the Smithsonian Exhibit-Crossroads: A Change in Rural America. Open those photo albums and family keepsake chests and see if you have what we are looking for. Can you help us with the hard-to-find photos/portraits?

Veterans Equine Program

LAS ANIMAS— There is a new Veterans equine program for all area vets. This is an effort to give back peace to those who fought so hard for the rest of us. No equine experience needed. Smithsonian Volunteer Meet & Greet

TRINIDAD— The City of Trinidad and the Corazon de Trinidad Creative District are proudly hosting the traveling Smithsonian Exhibition Crossroads: Change in Rural America. In addition to the Smithsonian exhibition we’ve put together more than two dozen companion exhibitions and public events highlighting the vibrant history of our region over the past 100 years! Join us on Thursday, Oct 26, 5 – 6:30 p.m. to get a sneak peek into what we have in store for our community while the Smithsonian is in town and let us know how you’d like to help out!

Halloween Carnival

TRINIDAD— Please join Keep Trinidad Safe at the Las Animas County Fairground Meeting Room, 2200 Linden Ave on Friday, Oct. 27, 1 – 6 p.m. for their Halloween Carnival. There will be candy, costume contests, games, glitter tattoos, arts and crafts.

Double-Feature Fright Nights

TRINIDAD— If you can’t imagine celebrating this spooky season without viewing cinematic classics of the horror genre then Trinidad History Museum has got you covered. Featuring the shocking, suspenseful, and undeniably captivating, Double-Feature Fright Nights includes 4 full nights of back-to-back screenings dedicated to movies that chill the bones! These movie screenings will take place on the museum grounds Friday, 27, and Tuesday, Oct. 31st, 6 – 9 p.m.

Halloween Carnival

TRINIDAD— Join the Trinidad History Museum’s on Saturday, Oct. 28, 12 – 6 p.m. for their Third Annual Halloween Carnival benefitting education programs. The carnival will have games and prizes for all ages, fun decorations, a photo booth, special treats, and plenty of candy! Game tickets are 2/$1 or 2/1 can of food (limit 10 cans/family). Allergen-free candy and prize options will be available. The Trinidad History Museum in located on the Historic Santa Fe trail.

Hoehne Harvest Festival

HOEHNE— Join the Hoehne FFA for their first annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 28, 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 and includes dinner, dance, and games. There will be something fun for the entire family during the harvest festival held at the Hoehne High Ag Shop.

AADA 40 years of service celebration

TRINIDAD—In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and 40 years of service please join Advocates Against Domestic Assault on Saturday, Oct. 28, 6:30 p.m. at the A.R. Dias de los Muertos

TRINIDAD— A Day of the Dead celebration will be held at Fort Wootton in Trinidad on Saturday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m. A Candlelight procession/parade with family alters will follow the Boo at the Woo festival. A night of family fun and celebration for those here and here after. All proceeds go to Las Animas County Veterans Council. For more information please call 719-859-5636.

Haunted Barn

HOEHNE— On Saturday, Oct. 28, after sunset join the Hoehne Student Council for their Haunted Barn at the Ag Barn. The cost to experience the Haunted Barn is $5 and the money goes directly back to Hoehne High School Student Council.

Halloween Frenzy

TRINIDAD— It’s that time of year again! Halloween is coming, and we have some exciting things planned on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2 – 5 p.m. at The Marketplace, 326 N. Commercial Street. We will be having fun Halloween Carnival games in our event center The Stock-House!
Come build your own Haunted Cookie House hosted by Mt. Carmel! The vendors will be having some spooky specials that you just have to try. The Market Bar will be having their own Halloween fun with some haunted mocktails.

CO 239 Road Closure

LAS ANIMAS— The Colorado Department of Transportation will replace a bridge northeast of Trinidad on Colorado Highway 239 at Mile Point 1.68. A full five-day closure of CO 239, beginning on Monday, Oct. 30, will be required to allow for the removal of the existing bridge, installation of the new concrete box culvert and paving of the roadway at the worksite. Bridge removal, xox culvert installation and paving operations are expected to be complete by Friday, Nov. 3.

Trunk or Treat at TSC

TRINIDAD— Join Trinidad State College on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 4 p.m. for a spooky fun time at their Trunk or Treat event at the Sullivan Student Center. All kids aged 18 and under (with their adults) are welcome to participate. Please no early birds.

Tequila’s 20th Anniversary Celebration

TRINIDAD— On Friday, Nov. 3, 1 – 3 p.m. Tequila’s Family Mexican Restaurant, 9900 Santa Fe Tail, will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary. There will be some great door prizes, including shirts, gift certificates and more. Mariachi Lobos will be performing at our restaurant to deliver you the most entertaining experience possible.

Apishapa Valley Historical Society Chili Cook Off

AGUILAR— The annual Apishapa Valley Historical Society Chili Cook Off  will be held on Saturday Nov. 4, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Aguilar Community Center. There will be a $50 prize for the best green, $50 prize for the best Red chili.  Entries must be delivered before 10 a.m. at the back entrance.  No entry fee and entry forms are available at Aguilar Mercantile,  Aguilar Library or will be available on that morning.  The public will be served from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. for a donation of $6.  Door prizes!  Come try your favorite!  Proceeds go to maintain the Apishapa Heritage Center & Museum.   for more info call Pat 719-406-5203.

Annual Stockman’s Banquet and Ball

TRINIDAD— The Souther Colorado Livestock Association presents it’s Annual Stockman’s Banquet and Ball on Saturday, Nov. 4, at El Rancho, 1901 Santa Fe Trail. Social hour starting at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. and music and dancing to follow. Tickets to the banquet and ball are $25 and be purchased by calling 719-980-0460. 100% of proceeds from this event will be divided and donated to causes near and dear to SCLA members.

FPFPD Annual Pasta Dinner fundraiser

TRINIDAD— Join the Fishers Peak Fire Protection District for the Annual Pasta Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 4, 3 – 7 p.m. at Sebastiani Gym, 204 N. Animas. In addition to a pasta dinner there will be a bake sale and silent auction. All money raised goes directly to the FPFPD.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

RATON— Phil Long Ford’s second annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Hunger Pantry has started and will be ending Saturday, Nov. 11. Help those who are less fortunate. Drop off donations to the Phil Long Ford Service Department at 301 S. 2nd Street, or the Sales Department at 223 S. 2nd Street. Road Closure- Eagle Tail Road

COLFAX— Road A-10, Eagle Tail Road is closed indefinitely at this time due to the bridge being shut down. The alternative route is to drive to Tenaja and drive around. Please use caution and drive safe.

RATON— The Raton Haunted Dungeon presents Carnevil at 201 S 2nd St, Raton, Thursday, Oct. 26 – Tuesday, Oct. 31, 6 – 9 p.m. (no showing on Sunday, Oct. 29). Be prepared for scares, screams, freaks and frights.

Celebration Outreach

RATON— Come join us for free hamburgers and hot dogs on Friday, Oct. 27, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. during the Celebration Outreach.  The Interdisciplinary Team members from Albuquerque will be at the Raton CBOC VHA, 1493 Whittier Street, handing out information. New Mexico Department of Veteran Services will be on site to answer questions and assist Veterans. COVID and Flu Vaccinations will be available all day. Halloween pet photo shoot

RATON— Join the Raton Humane Society for their Halloween photo shoot at the  Tractor Supply, 101 York Canyon Rd. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 10 a.m.  – 3 p.m. Get a cute photo of your pet in a spooky costume. Money raised goes directly to the Raton Humane Society.

Charles Parson at Capulin Volcano National Monument

CAPULIN— This nationally exhibited sculptor, muralist, draftsman, installation-performance artist and educator will be in the park Sunday, Oct. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 18 developing on-site and dimensional drawings, along with informal conversations with visitors. There will be a meet and greet on Saturday, Oct. 28, 1 – 2:30 p.m. in the Visitor’s Center. In case of inclement weather phone 575-278-2201 or the Capulin website for reschedule information.

Raton Tiger’s Booster Club open house

RATON— On Saturday, Oct. 28, 2 – 3:30 p.m., the Raton Tiger’s Booster Club invites you to the RHS Gymnasium for their open house. Come see the gyms new facelift, new chairs, and mew bleachers. They will also have a guest speaker discussing the school bond. Refreshments will be provided.

Raton High School Frito Pie and Bingo

RATON— The Class of 2024 presents Frito pie and bingo in the high school cafeteria Sunday, Oct. 29, from 12 – 3 p.m. $10 a ticket for Frito pie, $30 for 12 bingo games and $2 for dauber.

Trunk or Treat Contest

Trick or Treat Street

RATON— Raton MainStreet presents Safe Trick or Treat Street on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 3:30 p.m. at Ripley Park. There will be a costume contest at Ripley Park then trick or treating at participating downtown business and wrap it up at the Elks Lodge for hot dogs and punch. Sponsored by Raton MainStreet, Raton Police Officer Association, Phil Long Ford and the Raton Elks Lodge.

Light the Night

Community Baby Shower

RATON— On Friday, Nov. 3, 4 – 7 p.m. at Isabele Castillo Building, 123 S. 2nd St, Raton there will be a community baby shower hosted by Colfax County Youth Empowerment Services. This is open for dads, moms, grandparents and caregivers. Register at the baby shower to receive a diaper bag filled with baby items. Meet community providers and discover services they have to offer families. There will be live demonstrations and more!
