HUERFANO

Beginning T’ai Chi Classes at LVSA

WALSENBURG— Often referred to as “the gentle art of yielding”, the ancient, slow moving Chinese practice of T’ai Chi Chuan is also healing in many ways.  New, beginning classes will be held beginning Saturday, Oct. 21, at 9 a.m. at The La Veta School of the Arts, 105 W Ryus – across from the town park.  Beginning classes will continue every Saturday morning from 9-10am during the month of October The cost is a donation of $5 per class or $20 for a month of classes.  For more information, call Peggy Zehring 719-742-5193, or e-mail PeggyZehring@msn.com or LVArtSchool@yahoo.com.

Farm Bureau Annual Meeting- Cancelled

LA VETA— The Huerfano County Farm Bureau Annual meeting scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21 has been cancelled due to little registration response.  Also, it will not be rescheduled for this year.

3rd Annual Autumn Festival

Walsenburg— The Farm Bureau, 713 Walsen Ave, Walsenburg is hosting it’s 3rd Annual Autumn Festival on Saturday, Oct. 21, 1 – 4 p.m. There will be a bouncy house, face painting, free pumpkins and a costume contest.

Fall Follies

LA VETA—A night of laughs and fun featuring your favorite local performers! Check out Fall Follies at Francisco Center for the Performing Arts, 127 W. Water Conservancy District Meeting

WALSENBURG— The monthly board meeting of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District will be held at the Walsenburg Housing Authority activity room, 220 Russell St, Walsenburg, on Monday, Oct. 23,  6 p.m. The draft agenda for the meeting will be available on the district’s website: www.hcwcd.net.

FCPA Show Choir

LA VETA— Warming up those vocal chords? Get ready, because the FCPA Show Choir needs you. This is a non-auditioned choir and offers a community singing experience starting on Wednesday, Oct. 25,
from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at Francisco Center for the Performing Arts, 127 West Francisco, La Veta. So take your fabulous voices out of the shower and join in preparing a show for early-March.
The FCPA Show Choir is under the primary direction of Sam Sortore, but also includes the conducting
experience of Peggy Arnold-Hoobler and Joanne Vargo. Let’s get together and see what happens.

LVPL Science Symposium

LA VETA— The La Veta Library will host its second installment of the Science Symposium brought to you by Dr. Ed Donovan of La Veta on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2 p.m. This seminar will feature David Moore. PhD who had a 34 year career as a U.S. Geological Surveyor and who served our country as a helicopter pilot during the war in Viet Nam. His topic will be “Continents have not ALWAYS” been where they are today” and promises to be very enlightening .  Audience participation is encouraged and refreshments will be provided.

Dorca’s Circle Costume Contest

Eagles Ladies Auxilary Brunch

WALSENBURG— The Ladies Auxilary 1187 invites the community to join us for a brunch on Sunday Oct. 29, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main St. in Walsenburg. They will be serving hashbrowns, eggs, bacon, sausage, and green chili. Coffee or juice will be included with the cost of $7. We hope to see you there as your support is always appreciated.

Trunk or Treat

Photos needed for Smithsonian Exhibit-Crossroads

TRINIDAD— The public’s help is needed to find photos, portraits, sketches, paintings of the last 100 years of Trinidad, Colorado’s Mayors for an upcoming companion event to the Smithsonian Exhibit-Crossroads: A Change in Rural America. Open those photo albums and family keepsake chests and see if you have what we are looking for. Can you help us with the hard-to-find photos/portraits?

Veterans Equine Program

LAS ANIMAS— There is a new Veterans equine program for all area vets. This is an effort to give back peace to those who fought so hard for the rest of us. No equine experience needed. October Food Drive

TRINIDAD— During the month of October, the Trinidad History Museum is holding a canned food drive (human and pet!) to gather donations for Fishers Peak Soup Kitchen and Pet Assistance League Store. A donation drop-off will be available in the museum gift shop during opening hours, and if you bring canned food to any of Trinidad History Museum’s events this month, you’ll receive special discounts and goodies!  The hours for the Museum are Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Have questions? Cup of Joe Peer to Peer Program

TRINIDAD— Every second and forth Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. Veterans are invited to Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center, 127 N. Commercial Street Suite 205 for a fresh cup of coffee. Fall Bazaar

TRINIDAD— HR Sayre Senior Center will have it’s Fall Bazaar on Friday, Oct. 20, 9 a.m. There will be craft vendors, a bake sale and breakfast burritos available for purchase. Located at 1222 San Pedro, Trinidad.

Double-Feature Fright Nights

TRINIDAD— If you can’t imagine celebrating this spooky season without viewing cinematic classics of the horror genre then Trinidad History Museum has got you covered. Featuring the shocking, suspenseful, and undeniably captivating, Double-Feature Fright Nights includes 4 full nights of back-to-back screenings dedicated to movies that chill the bones! These movie screenings will take place on the museum grounds Friday, Oct 20, 27, and Tuesday, Oct. 31st, 6 – 9 p.m.

Garbage Glam

TRINIDAD— Garbage Glam is coming to Main Street Live Theater on Friday, Oct. 20, 7 p.m. Local non-profit groups will benefit from this wacky collection of wearable recycled and/or up-cycled materials, and those wishing to show off holiday costumes are also welcome to join the fun on stage for a chance to win trophies. All proceeds from this event will be divided equally between SoCo Clubhouse and Somebody Cares/EM Food pantry, serving Las Animas County. Come join the fun for only $10 admission. Howl-o-ween Hangout at Trinidad History Museum

TRINIDAD— Saturday, Oct. 21, 1 p.m., join the Howl-o-ween fun at Trinidad History Museum, 120 South Chestnut. Bring your pooch by the museum to show off costumes (human and canine!), grab a goodie bag for your pet, and take a cute pic at our photo booth! Admission to the event is FREE! We’ll have museum bandanas available for purchase or for a donation of canned pet or human food. Dogs must be leashed at all times; please ensure your dog can play nicely with ALL others. AADA 40 years of service celebration

Dias de los Muertos

TRINIDAD— A Day of the Dead celebration will be held at Fort Wootton in Trinidad on Saturday, Oct.28, 7 p.m. A Candlelight procession/parade with family alters will follow the Boo at the Woo festival. Haunted Barn

HOEHNE— On Saturday, Oct. 28, after sunset join the Hoehne Student Council for their Haunted Barn at the Ag Barn. The cost to experience the Haunted Barn is $5 and the money goes directly back to Hoehne High School Student Council.

Halloween Frenzy

TRINIDAD— It’s that time of year again! Halloween is coming, and we have some exciting things planned on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2 – 5 p.m. at The Marketplace, 326 N. Commercial Street. We will be having fun Halloween Carnival games in our event center The Stock-House!
Come build your own Haunted Cookie House hosted by Mt. Carmel! The vendors will be having some spooky specials that you just have to try. The Market Bar will be having their own Halloween fun with some haunted mocktails.

COLFAX

Road Closure- Eagle Tail Road

COLFAX— Road A-10, Eagle Tail Road is closed indefinitely at this time due to the bridge being shut down. The alternative route is to drive to Tenaja and drive around. Please use caution and drive safe.

Movies at the library

RATON— The Arthur Johnson Memorial Library will be showing movies this weekend. Thursday, Oct. 19, 6 p.m. they will be showing The Conjuring and on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2 p.m. they will be showing ParaNorman 3D. Please come join in for Movie night at the Library! Feel free to bring snacks, just please be sure and clean up after yourself.

Lion’s Club free glasses day

RATON— The Raton Lion’s Club will be holding a free event open to anyone in our community on Saturday, Oct. 21, 9  – 11:45 a.m. at the Isabel Castillo Event Center located at 123 S. 2nd Street in downtown Raton. Those attending the event will be able to try on and order a FREE brand-new pair of eyeglass frames. Frames for men, women, and children will be available. Prescription single-vision lenses and lined bifocal lenses are included. Each person MUST to bring a current copy of their glasses prescription (no expired prescription will be accepted). No progressive or transition lenses are available.

Independent Riders of Raton Bake Sale

RATON— Come out and buy some delicious goodies on Saturday, Oct. 21, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Mr. Ferri’s Gas Station. Cookies, cupcakes, tortillas and salsa will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit Run for the Wall.

Raton Public Schools Fall Festival

RATON— On Saturday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Raton Public Schools will have their Annual Fall Festival at Tiger Stadium. There will be over 40 booths and vendors plus cornhole, petting zoo, pony rides, food, costume contest, bouncy house and much more!

Tractor Supply anniversary and Raton Humane Society adoption event

RATON— On Saturday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. join the Tractor Supply in Raton in celebrating their anniversary. The Raton Humane Society will also have a pet Halloween photo shoot and will have adoptable animals there as well.

Raton Witch Walk

RATON— Gather your friends and family for a wickedly wonderful party in downtown Raton on Saturday, Oct. 21, 4 p.m. – 12 a.m. Raton Witch Bar Crawl, Charity Fundraiser and Private Dance Party at the VFW with DJ Beverly Baca. $40 to participate, includes drinks and appetizers at 6 stopping points and admittance to the private dance party. Register at Old Pass Gallery by Oct. 18. Proceeds go to The Hungry Pantry, providing quality food items to households experiencing food insecurity.

Candlelight Ceremony

RATON— Candlelight Ceremony for Alternatives to Violence will be held at the Shuler Theater, 131 N. 2nd St. on Saturday, Oct. 21, 6 – 8 p.m. This is a candlelight ceremony to remember those we have lost to or who have suffered domestic violence.

Springer volleyball bake sale

SPRINGER— The Springer volleyball team is holding a bake sale fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 605 5th Street.

RATON— The Raton Haunted Dungeon presents Carnevil at 201 S 2nd St, Raton, Thursday, Oct. 26 – Tuesday, Oct. 21, 6 – 9 p.m.(no showing on Sunday, Oct. 29). Be prepared for scares, screams, freaks and frights.

Celebration Outreach

RATON— Come join us for free hamburgers and hot dogs on Friday, Oct. 27, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. during the Celebration Outreach.  The Interdisciplinary Team members from Albuquerque will be at the Raton CBOC VHA, 1493 Whittier Street, handing out information. New Mexico Department of Veteran Services will be on site to answer questions and assist Veterans. COVID and Flu Vaccinations will be available all day. Charles Parson at Capulin Volcano National Monument

CAPULIN— This nationally exhibited sculptor, muralist, draftsman, installation-performance artist and educator will be in the park Sunday, Oct. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 18 developing on-site and dimensional drawings, along with informal conversations with visitors. Raton High School Frito Pie and Bingo

RATON— The Class of 2024 presents Frito pie and bingo in the high school cafeteria Sunday, Oct. 29, from 12 – 3 p.m. $10 a ticket for Frito pie, $30 for 12 bingo games and $2 for dauber.

Trunk or Treat Contest

RATON— On Tuesday, Oct. 31, 3 – 4:30 p.m. there will be a Trunk or Treat contest at Phil Long Ford of Raton, 301 S. 2nd St. First place prize is $200, contact Shannon at 575-445-6904 to register.

Trick or Treat Street

RATON— Raton MainStreet presents Safe Trick or Treat Street on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 3:30 p.m. at Ripley Park. There will be a costume contest at Ripley Park then trick or treating at participating downtown business and wrap it up at the Elks Lodge for hot dogs and punch. Sponsored by Raton MainStreet, Raton Police Officer Association, Phil Long Ford and the Raton Elks Lodge.

BENT COUNTY— The 75th anniversary of John Martin Dam/Reservoir.
