Veterans, Military Free
Admission to State Parks

COLORADO— Colorado Parks and Wildlife is offering free admission to all veterans and active duty members of the military, military reserve and National Guard to any Colorado state park for Veterans Day. On Friday, Nov. 10, any member of the military forces or veteran can enter any of Colorado’s state parks free of charge, along with his or her companions in the same vehicle.
In honor of the state holiday, CPW offices and call centers will be closed on Nov. 10 to observe Veteran’s Day. See the ​Extended Office Hours for Big Game Rifle Seasons​ and call ahead to ensure the location is open.

“The Butler” Movie Matinee

LA VETA— Join La Veta Library for a Movie Matinee on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. We will be showing Lee Daniels’ “The Butler” inspired by a true story. Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker stars as Cecil Gaines, the devoted husband, father and White House butler who served seven presidents during some of the most tumultuous and defining moments of the 20th century. Oprah Winfrey co-stars with a stellar supporting cast that includes John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terrence Howard, Lenny Kravitz, James Marsden, David Oyelowo, Alan Rickman, Liev Schreiber and Robin Williams in this powerful drama from Oscar nominated director Lee Daniels.

1980’s Music Bingo with LVPL

LA VETA— Join La Veta Public Library on Thursday, Nov. 9, 6 p.m. at Mountain Merman Brewing Company for “Now That’s What I Call Music Bingo: Songs of the 1980’s!” We will play samples on shuffle from a custom “1980’s Songs” Playlist that match spaces on bingo cards provided. SPLD Presents Storytime with Mrs. Flamingo

WALSENBURG— Join Mrs. Flamingo on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Join us as we partner with Dorcas Circle to bring you FREE kid’s clothing as well as a story.  Grown-ups who bring a child get free coffee and donuts in addition to a free kid’s book to take home.

Beginning T’ai Chi Classes at La Veta School of the Arts

WALSENBURG— Often referred to as “the gentle art of yielding”, the ancient, slow moving Chinese practice of T’ai Chi Chuan is also healing in many ways.  New, beginning classes will be held beginning Saturdays, at 9 a.m. at The La Veta School of the Arts, 105 W Ryus – across from the town park.  Beginning classes will continue every Saturday morning from 9-10am during the month of October The cost is a donation of $5 per class or $20 for a month of classes.  For more information, call Peggy Zehring 719-742-5193, or e-mail PeggyZehring@msn.com or LVArtSchool@yahoo.com.

Veterans Day Spaghetti Luncheon

WALSENBURG— The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 16 is hosting a Veterans Day Spaghetti Luncheon for all Veterans and their Families and the community on Saturday, Nov. 11, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main St., Walsenburg.  The menu will consist of Spaghetti with meatballs, Fettuccini Alfredo, salad, rolls, cake and Beverages. Veterans and children under 12 are free. Spouses are $5, everyone else is $8. There will be a silent auction and door prizes. The Apache Creek Fiddlers will provide entertainment. SPACe Opening Reception

LA VETA— The Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe Gallery) invites everyone to the opening reception for the 26th Annual Gift of Art Show this Saturday, Nov. 11, between 5 – 7 p.m. Enjoy refreshments and visit with the artists. There is a wide variety of media and many small items perfect for gift-giving. Purchasers of eligible artwork in the show can get 20% off the purchase price during the reception. The show will be on display until Jan. 6. SPACe Gallery is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 10 am – 3 pm. There is no admission fee.

New Hope Ministries hosts Bob Gutierrez

WALSENBURG— New Hope Ministries in Walsenburg welcomes Bob Gutierrez, an internationally known traveling minister who specializes in song, to minister on Sunday, Nov.12, 10 a.m. and at 6 p.m. at the New Hope Ministries church, 108 Kansas Avenue in Walsenburg. All are welcome.

Eagle’s monthly breakfast

WALSENBURG— The Fraternal Order of Eagle’s #1187 Women’s Auxiliary is offering their monthly breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 12, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Eagle’s Hall, 614 Main Street, Walsenburg. They will serve a breakfast burrito on a homemade tortilla with chopped and seasoned fresh green chile, a fruit cup, coffee and juice for $8 per person. Free Legal Self Help Clinic

WALSENBURG— On the second Tuesday of every month at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg there is a free legal self help clinic. Volunteer attorneys will assist one-on-one, via computer link. Reinventing La Clinica

GARDNER— La Clinica, a non-profit serving the Upper Huerfano Valley, is working diligently towards once again serving our community in a variety of ways. We are currently seeking a board member for the position of treasurer. This is a volunteer position for a minimum of one year commitment. WALSENBURG— On Wednesday, Nov. 15, 3 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg Helen Nuce will be hosting a scarf crochet class. All supplies are provided or you can bring your own! There is no fee; it’s free to participate.

SPLD presents Teen Pizza

WALSENBURG— Every Wednesday, from 4 – 6 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for PIZZA, provided by GubGub’s Pizza and Ice Cream! Teens are welcome to come hang with us after school every Wednesday, no catch, no demands just stop by and check out our library. We have Wii, computers, tablets, games, puzzles, music, friends, laughs and of course BOOKS!

WALSENBURG— Join the Spanish Peaks Library at the Second Street Bar and Grill at the Walsenburg Golf Course for their monthly trivia event on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 6 p.m. Trivia is free to participate with food and drink available for purchase. Painting class at SPLD

The Myths of Thanksgiving

WALSENBURG— The Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg is partnering with Huajatolla Heritage Foundation for a thought-provoking program Friday, Nov. 17, 1 p.m. The program, “1621, A New Look at
Thanksgiving” will explore some of the myths and realities we have all grown accustomed to as the Thanksgiving experience we have handed down for generations. Sandy Dolak will offer a new look at
the real history behind the event that inspired the myth of The First Thanksgiving. Another event made
possible through the Wisdom Archives of Huerfano County grant provided by Art in Society. (And in the
spirit of sharing, refreshments will be served.

Resorting Nature: Experimental Flooding on the Rio

LA VETA— On Thursday, Nov. 16, 2 p.m. will be the next Science Seminars at La Veta Public Library. Restoring Nature: Experimental Flooding on the Rio Grande, presented by Manuel Molles, PhD (University of Arizona). Manuel Molles, Ph.D., University of Arizona, is a Professor Emeritus of Biology from the University of New Mexico. His research included large-scale studies of how fire, floods, and climate affect aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in the Rio Grande Basin.

Care and Share Mobile Market in La Veta

LA VETA—  The La Veta Village assisted living residence partners with Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado to provide food for those in need in the greater La Veta area. The monthly Mobile Market provides no-cost groceries. Everyone in the community is welcome to shop at the market. Simply walk up and choose food you would like to take home. The Mobile Market is coming to the La Veta Village parking lot 109 East Francisco Street on Fridays, November 17th, and December 15th from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Bring Your Own Bags. LA VETA— The La Veta Village Auxiliary pre-Thanksgiving Fundraising Bake Sale will be on Saturday, Nov. 18, 10 a.m. Come and get your pies, cakes, and breads for Thanksgiving. Might have brownies and cookies. Located at the porch of the La Veta Public Library.

Eagles Parade of Lights party

WALSENBURG— The Eagles Auxillary at 614 Main Street, Walsenburg will be open before and after the parade of lights on Friday, Nov. 24. The Ladies Aux will have a grab bag table full of goodies. Food and hot chocolate will be available for purchase. There will also be a special treat for the children, Santa Claus will be handing out candy and posing for photos. Come out and enjoy this wonderful community event with us.

TRINIDAD— The public’s help is needed to find photos, portraits, sketches, paintings of the last 100 years of Trinidad, Colorado’s Mayors for an upcoming companion event to the Smithsonian Exhibit-Crossroads: A Change in Rural America. Open those photo albums and family keepsake chests and see if you have what we are looking for. Can you help us with the hard-to-find photos/portraits?

20th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive

TRINIDAD— This year will be the 20th year that The First National Bank in Trinidad has sponsored an
annual Thanksgiving Food Drive in Trinidad. Over the past 19 years, countless families have received a Thanksgiving surprise on the Sunday before Thanksgiving when volunteers delivered food baskets and gift certificates for groceries and dining out at local restaurants.
“In 17 days, we hope to collect enough cash donations to provide grocery gift cards for
many local families in need. Families without cooking facilities will be given gift certificates to go out for a family meal. Only cash donations will be accepted, and every little bit helps!” says Mrs. Smith-Prieto. Donations are accepted now through November 17th at any First National Bank in Trinidad location.

Veterans Equine Program

LAS ANIMAS— There is a new Veterans equine program for all area vets. This is an effort to give back peace to those who fought so hard for the rest of us. No equine experience needed. Second Saturday Trail Work

TRINIDAD— Trinidad Trails Alliance Needs a Hand Building a NEW TRAIL! Join us for second Saturday trail work on Saturday, Nov. 11, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. to leave your mark on the future of trails in Trinidad. Due to this extended work day, lunch will be provided! We’ll also have cool TTA bandanas for those who work the full day but of course any amount of trail work is appreciated. TTA will be constructing a new access trail from the cutover trail between CR 20.8 and the South Shore entrance to the Lake Park, traversing down to the new trail loop. Please park at South Shore at the Sunset Point parking lot and we will walk over to the connector trail.
Bring your own water, gloves, and sunscreen. TTA and the Army Corps will provide lunch and cold beverages, as well as all necessary tools.

Annual Veterans Day Luncheon

Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD— The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce its monthly event, the Second Saturday Poetry Series as it continues on Saturday, Nov.11, 7 p.m. An Open Mic for poets and all literary souls, the Series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at the Space to Create Commons, 218 West Main St. The evening begins at 7 pm with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. This event is free and open to the public. Featured this month is Colorado author and poet, Kim Krisco.

Trinidad’s First Public Sharing of “Mind the Gap”

TRINIDAD— Tuesday, Nov. 14, 5:30 p.m. New York Theatre Workshop’s Mind the Gap Intergenerational Program brings Trinidadians aged 60 and up with teens aged 14 to 19 together to share their stories. Through a series of interviews and writing exercises, they write short plays inspired by their partner’s personal stories, and in a culminating evening of play readings, hear their scripts read aloud by local actors. 2023 Legislative Round Table

TRINIDAD— Join the City of Trinidad/Las Animas County on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 4 p.m. at Commons at Space to create for an in-depth discussion of the latest updates and pressing issues before the session commences. We will circulate a detailed agenda as the event nears to ensure a productive and well-organized discussion. Please anticipate a session duration of approximately two hours. The Five States of Colorado- Film Screening

TRINIDAD— The first companion event to the Smithsonian Exhibition – Crossroads: Change in Rural America is on Friday,  Nov. 17, 2 – 4:30 p.m. at The Commons at Space to Create. A Film Screening: The Five States of Colorado. Join us for an engaging exploration and illustration of the history, culture, concerns, and needs of each of the five featured regions. Designed for a wide range of audiences from elementary school age to adults, this film addresses the history and issues within the five regions of Colorado.

Community Thanksgiving

TRINIDAD—We are pleased to share with you that again this year’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner will have in-person dining, as well as pick-up and delivery options. Continuing our 30-year tradition, dinner will be served on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23 and all are welcome.
In this time of giving we are grateful for anything you may be able to offer. This can be in-kind donations as well as monetary.

Hometown holiday events

TRINIDAD— The Hometown Holidays Trinidad is proud to present the 24th annual Holiday Tree lighting and Parade of Lights. The tree lighting is on Friday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m., at City Hall. There will be entertainment by Trinidad Music Association and Mount Carmel Youth Orchestra, Santa and elves, and hot cocoa provided by the rotary.
The Parade of Lights is on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 6 p.m., on Main Street, starting at Oak Street, and progressing westerly toward Animas. Thanksgiving Food Drive

RATON— Phil Long Ford’s second annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Hunger Pantry has started and will be ending Saturday, Nov. 11. Help those who are less fortunate. Drop off donations to the Phil Long Ford Service Department at 301 S. 2nd Street, or the Sales Department at 223 S. 2nd Street.

Road Closure- Eagle Tail Road

COLFAX— Road A-10, Eagle Tail Road is closed indefinitely at this time due to the bridge being shut down. The alternative route is to drive to Tenaja and drive around. Please use caution and drive safe.

RATON— Would you like to learn and share strategies for coping with life’s struggles? There will be free coffee and snacks.

Maxwell Booster Club Bingo

Military Exhibit

RATON— The Raton Museum, 108 South 2nd Street will have their Military Exhibit untill Saturday, Nov. 18. There is free entry for all Veterans and active service members. The Museum is open Wednesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Tails and Ales Adoption Event

RATON— Check out Gate City Craft Bar, 244 S. for an afternoon of adoptable furry friends and craft beer. The adoption event will be on Saturday, Nov.18, 11 a.m.

RATON— Volunteers are needed to set up the City of Bethlehem Wednesday, Nov.22, at 10 a.m. Meet at the entrance to Climax Canyon Park on Apache Ave.

Festival of Lights

RATON— On Friday, Nov. 24, 5:30 – 8 p.m. join Raton MainStreet’s 2023 Festival of Lights on Historic First Street. Shop downtown merchants and enjoy lighted floats.
