FNB Open House

OUR WORLD— On Friday, Dec. 1, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. come to The First National Bank in Trinidad, Walsenburg, and the Load Protection Office in Raton for their Open house. This is also the time to pick up the their very popular 2024 Calendar. The 2024 calendar is distributed as a free gift to the community while supplies last and features classic artwork published by The Saturday Evening Post.

One Room School House
celebration

GARDNER— You are invited to our One Room Schoolhouse celebration on Thursday, Nov. 16, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This tradition has been taking place for more than 30 years.  The school mixes students of different grades into classrooms and functions as a one-room schoolhouse for the day.  Every year, seniors who graduated from the 8th grade at Gardner Valley School are invited to participate.  Students are encouraged to dress “old fashioned.”

Painting class at SPLD

WALSENBURG— There will be an acrylic painting class Thursday, Nov. 16, 1 – 3 p.m. led by Jenn Dunn, at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. The subject is an aspen grove in the fall. All supplies are provided as are refreshments. Free as always, RSVP to Sandy J.   719 989-8438.

Resorting Nature: Experimental Flooding on the Rio

LA VETA— On Thursday, Nov. 16, 2 p.m. will be the next Science Seminars at La Veta Public Library. Restoring Nature: Experimental Flooding on the Rio Grande, presented by Manuel Molles, PhD (University of Arizona). Manuel Molles, Ph.D., University of Arizona, is a Professor Emeritus of Biology from the University of New Mexico. His research included large-scale studies of how fire, floods, and climate affect aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in the Rio Grande Basin. As always, free with tasty refreshments.

Sassy Stitchers at SPLD

WALSENBURG— Experienced and novice stitchers alike are invited. Come join this fun-loving and creative bunch of Sassy Stitchers every Thursday, 2 – 4 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.

SPLD Presents Storytime with Mrs. Flamingo

WALSENBURG— Join Mrs. Flamingo on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Join us as we partner with Dorcas Circle to bring you FREE kid’s clothing as well as a story.  Grown-ups who bring a child get free coffee and donuts in addition to a free kid’s book to take home.

The Myths of Thanksgiving

WALSENBURG— The Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg is partnering with Huajatolla Heritage Foundation for a thought-provoking program Friday, Nov. 17, 1 p.m. The program, “1621, A New Look at
Thanksgiving” will explore some of the myths and realities we have all grown accustomed to as the Thanksgiving experience we have handed down for generations. Sandy Dolak will offer a new look at
the real history behind the event that inspired the myth of The First Thanksgiving. Another event made
possible through the Wisdom Archives of Huerfano County grant provided by Art in Society. (And in the
spirit of sharing, refreshments will be served.

WALSENBURG— On Friday, Nov 17, 1:30 p.m. the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg will be showing Legally Blonde, starring Reese Witherspoon. Elle Wood, a ditzy blonde determined to win back her boyfriend by attending Harvard. Popcorn will be provided but please BYOB.

Care and Share Mobile Market in La Veta

LA VETA—  The La Veta Village assisted living residence partners with Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado to provide food for those in need in the greater La Veta area. The monthly Mobile Market provides no-cost groceries. Everyone in the community is welcome to shop at the market. Simply walk up and choose food you would like to take home. The Mobile Market is coming to the La Veta Village parking lot 109 East Francisco Street on Fridays, November 17th, and December 15th from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Bring Your Own Bags. Praise Church Craft Fair

Beginning T’ai Chi Classes at
La Veta School of the Arts

Pre-Thanksgiving Fundraiser Bake Sale

LA VETA— The La Veta Village Auxiliary pre-Thanksgiving Fundraising Bake Sale will be on Saturday, Nov. 18, 10 a.m. Come and get your pies, cakes, and breads for Thanksgiving. Might have brownies and cookies. Located at the porch of the La Veta Public Library.

SPLD Presents Aspen Song Kids

WALSENBURG— On Saturday, Nov. 18, 3 – 5 p.m. The Aspen Song Kids are coming to Spanish Peaks Library, Walsenburg to share their book, Sacred Spiral.  The youth art group will read some passages from their book, sing some songs and teach an art class, all supplies provided.  Come enjoy this special event!

La Veta Writes – Monthly Writing Group

LA VETA— Are you interested in making writing and/or journaling a bigger part of your life and looking for support and encouragement? Or, are you a longtime writer working on a project, a song writer or a poet? Join us on Tuesday,Nov. 21, 3 – 5 p.m. at the Parkside Gallery, 127 W Ryus. SPLD presents Teen Pizza

WALSENBURG— Every Wednesday, from 4 – 6 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for PIZZA, provided by GubGub’s Pizza and Ice Cream! Teens are welcome to come hang with us after school every Wednesday, no catch, no demands just stop by and check out our library. We have Wii, computers, tablets, games, puzzles, music, friends, laughs and of course BOOKS!

Eagles Parade of Lights party

WALSENBURG— The Eagles Auxillary at 614 Main Street, Walsenburg will be open before and after the parade of lights on Friday, Nov. 24. The Ladies Aux will have a grab bag table full of goodies. Food and hot chocolate will be available for purchase. There will also be a special treat for the children, Santa Claus will be handing out candy and posing for photos. Come out and enjoy this wonderful community event with us.

WALSENBURG— Visit the Museum of Friends, 600 Main Street, Walsenburg on both Saturdays, Nov. 25th and Dec. 2nd, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for the annual Marketplace of Ideas featuring local artists and vendors! Wreath Making

LA VETA— Join us on Saturday, Nov. 25, 1 – 4 p.m. and make a fresh wreath (or swag) to help decorate the town of La Veta for the holidays or make one for your own home! Huerfano County Fair Board

HUERFANO—The Huerfano County 4-H Fair Board has 4 seats open and will have elections at it’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds in La Veta.  If you are interested in volunteering your time and serving on the board, please join us. The Traditions Arts and Crafts Fair

WALSENBURG— The Traditions Arts and Crafts Fair will be held again this year at the Walsenburg Mercantile, 408 Russell Avenue on Saturday, Dec. 2, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. We will have a variety of arts and crafts, great holiday music, Santa, the “Little People’s Store” and a secret workshop space for kiddos to make gift surprises. Annual Holiday Art Walk

LV Library Board

LA VETA— The La Veta Library Board is looking for two new members to help shape the future of award-winning library services in southern Huerfano County. Meetings are once per month and usually last between one and two hours. Board members work with each other and with the Library Director to develop services that meet the interests and needs of our La Veta and Cuchara communities. Terms are for a three year period, beginning January 1, 2024, and Board members must reside in the Library District. Send letters of interest to Library Board Chair, Brad Atchison at Trustee_Brad@lvpl.org or drop off a letter at the Library at 310 S Main in La Veta by Tuesday, Dec. 12.

TRINIDAD— The public’s help is needed to find photos, portraits, sketches, paintings of the last 100 years of Trinidad, Colorado’s Mayors for an upcoming companion event to the Smithsonian Exhibit-Crossroads: A Change in Rural America. Open those photo albums and family keepsake chests and see if you have what we are looking for. Can you help us with the hard-to-find photos/portraits?

20th Annual Thanksgiving
Food Drive

TRINIDAD— This year will be the 20th year that The First National Bank in Trinidad has sponsored an
annual Thanksgiving Food Drive in Trinidad. Over the past 19 years, countless families have received a Thanksgiving surprise on the Sunday before Thanksgiving when volunteers delivered food baskets and gift certificates for groceries and dining out at local restaurants.
“In 17 days, we hope to collect enough cash donations to provide grocery gift cards for
many local families in need. Families without cooking facilities will be given gift certificates to go out for a family meal. Only cash donations will be accepted, and every little bit helps!” says Mrs. Smith-Prieto. Donations are accepted now through November 17th at any First National Bank in Trinidad location.

Veterans Equine Program

LAS ANIMAS— There is a new Veterans equine program for all area vets. This is an effort to give back peace to those who fought so hard for the rest of us. No equine experience needed. TRINIDAD— Every second and forth Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. Veterans are invited to Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center, 127 N. Commercial Street Suite 205 for a fresh cup of coffee. The Five States of Colorado- Film Screening

TRINIDAD— The first companion event to the Smithsonian Exhibition – Crossroads: Change in Rural America is on Friday,  Nov. 17, 2 – 4:30 p.m. at The Commons at Space to Create. A Film Screening: The Five States of Colorado. Join us for an engaging exploration and illustration of the history, culture, concerns, and needs of each of the five featured regions. Designed for a wide range of audiences from elementary school age to adults, this film addresses the history and issues within the five regions of Colorado. On Monday, Nov. 20, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. there will be an additional screening at the TSC Berg Room 105.

TRINIDAD— The Corazon Gallery is featuring the work of Roger Martinez during November.  Roger will be teaching a Retablo Painting workshop on Friday, Nov. 17 from 3 – 5 p.m. The fee for the workshop is $25 and includes all materials. Ornament Contest

TRINIDAD— Get ready to spread some literary holiday cheer with our “Favorite Book or Book Character
Ornament Contest” hosted by the Trinidad Carnegie Public Library. Show off your creativity, celebrate the joy of reading, and decorate your own unique holiday ornament based on your favorite book or book character. This fun and festive contest is for ages 5-17 and you have the chance to win amazing prizes, thanks to the generous support of the Trinidad Community Foundation. Participants are encouraged to create a holiday ornament inspired by their favorite book or book character. Visit Trinidad Carnegie Public Library during our regular business hours to submit your ornament.

Community Thanksgiving

TRINIDAD—We are pleased to share with you that again this year’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner will have in-person dining, as well as pick-up and delivery options. Continuing our 30-year tradition, dinner will be served on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23 and all are welcome.
In this time of giving we are grateful for anything you may be able to offer. This can be in-kind donations as well as monetary.
Monetary donations can be given electronically through Zion’s donation portal at https://zionslutheran.tithelysetup2.com/give. Checks made out to Zion’s Lutheran Church and note in the memo line “Thanksgiving” can be mailed or delivered to the church.

Red Barron of the Rockies

TRINIDAD— Arts Council of Trinidad sponsoring “Red Barron of the Rockies” Stop by Gallery Row, 149 E. Main St, Trinidad, to have your child’s picture taken just in time for Christmas in a wonderful wooden airplane with the clouds behind – Friday, Nov. 24, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. $10 supports Arts Council of Trinidad events. For children 5 and under.

Hometown holiday events

TRINIDAD— The Hometown Holidays Trinidad is proud to present the 24th annual Holiday Tree lighting and Parade of Lights. The tree lighting is on Friday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m., at City Hall. There will be entertainment by Trinidad Music Association and Mount Carmel Youth Orchestra, Santa and elves, and hot cocoa provided by the rotary.
The Parade of Lights is on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 6 p.m., on Main Street, starting at Oak Street, and progressing westerly toward Animas. Local Landscapes in Miniature

TRINIDAD— The Corazon Gallery is delighted to announce an upcoming art exhibit, “Local Landscapes in Miniature “, which will celebrate the natural beauty of our local environment in a small l but impactful format.  The theme, local landscapes, hopes to encourage artists to explore the diverse surroundings of our local region. Artwork Specifications: artists may submit up to 3 pieces in any 2 or 3 dimensional medium.  Artwork must be 12 x 12 inches, including frame.
Delivery of artwork will be the weekend of, Nov. 25, 26, 27 at the Corazon Gallery, 149 E Main St, Trinidad. There is an entry fee of $15 for one piece, three for $30.
There will be an opening reception on Friday, Dec. 1, 5 – 8 p.m. at the Corazon Gallery. The public is welcome and light refreshments will be served. Artwork will be on display from Dec. 1 through Dec. 31.

Destination Blueprint Trinidad

TRINIDAD— Join the City of Trinidad Tuesday, Dec. 5, , from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at The Commons at Space to Create for an engaging discussion about the future of tourism in Trinidad and Las Animas County. This community visioning and action planning workshop, supported by the Colorado Tourism Office Destination Blueprint Program is open to individuals who want to help shape the direction of tourism for our community. COLFAX

Road Closure- Eagle Tail Road

COLFAX— Road A-10, Eagle Tail Road is closed indefinitely at this time due to the bridge being shut down. The alternative route is to drive to Tenaja and drive around. Please use caution and drive safe.

Suicide, Recovery, and Remembrance Committee meeting

RATON— All who are concerned about the growing number of deaths due to suicide, over-dose, violence, or drug-related issues are welcome to be a part of this community committee to bring awareness and resources for help. Join us on Friday, Nov. 17, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 240 Rio Grande Ave, Raton.

Young Adults Peer Support Group

RATON— Would you like to learn and share strategies for coping with life’s struggles? Young Adults, ages 18-30 join ZIA’ Youth, 207 Park Ave every Saturday, from 9 – 10 a.m. Join the community of encouragement and Empowerment and begin you weekend on a positive note. There will be free coffee and snacks.

RATON— The Raton Museum, 108 South 2nd Street will have their Military Exhibit untill Saturday, Nov. 18. There is free entry for all Veterans and active service members. The Museum is open Wednesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Tails and Ales Adoption Event

RATON— Check out Gate City Craft Bar, 244 S. for an afternoon of adoptable furry friends and craft beer. The adoption event will be on Saturday, Nov.18, 11 a.m.

Swords and Boards
with ZIA Youth

RATON— Every Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at ZIA Youth, join Niko, Alex, and their merry band of Ratonians who transform into Knights, Dwarves, and Swamp Witches for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Your Nerd Tribe is waiting for you to discover yourself among them! ZIA Youth is located at 207 Park Ave, Raton and is a safe place for 9-17 year olds to hang out after school.

Festival of Lights
