NOW That’s What I Call Music Bingo: Songs from the Mouse

LA VETA– On Thursday, May 9 at 6 p.m., please join La Veta Public Library at Mountain Merman Brewing Company,220 S. Main St. for “Now That’s What I Call Music Bingo: Songs from the Mouse!” We will play samples on shuffle from a custom “Songs from the Mouse” playlist that match spaces on bingo cards provided. SCCY Picnic

WALSENBURG– On Friday, May 10, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. SCCY will be hosting a Summer Sign Up picnic at City Park on 7th St.  Bring your children so that they can sign up for summer programming at SCCY.  We are offering many fun things in which the children can participate.  We will be serving hamburgers and hotdogs and all the fixings. The food for the event has been provided by Community Banks of Colorado,  Walsenburg Branch. We hope to see you all there.  Let’s get the summer going with some great food and lots of fun at our City Park.

Tiny Treats for Tea Time Baking Class

LA VETA–  On Saturday, May 11 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. will be Tiny Treats for Tea Time at Estelle Center for Creative Arts in La Veta. This class focuses on baking treats that are perfect for tea time. Smaller in scale, these baked goods are perfect recipes for snacks or any time you need small bites. You will bake your own batches of bite-sized sweet and savory goodies in this all-day class. We will host a tea for the La Veta community at the end of the day where the day’s baking will be shared.

New Beginning T’ai Chi Classes at The La Veta School of the Arts

LA VETA– Often referred to as “The gentle art of yielding” the ancient, slow moving Chinese practice of T’ai Chi Chuan is also healing in many ways.  New, beginning classes will be held at the La Veta School of the Arts, 109 West Ryus- across from the town park.  Beginning classes will continue every Saturday morning from 9 – 10 a.m. during the month of May.  The cost is a donation of $5 per class or $20 For a month of classes.  For more information, call Peggy Zehring  719-742-5193, or email PeggyZehring@msn.com or LVArtSchoo@yahoo.com

Redwing Clean up Day

REDWING– On Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. there will be a Redwing Cemetery cleanup. The Cemetery is located 1 mile west of crossroads at Redwing on the north side of CR 580. Please bring plenty of water and your own tools to help with the cleanup efforts.

Francisco Fort Clean Up Day

LA VETA– Help us get the plaza, grounds and buildings ready for the community and visitors on Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.. There will be jobs for all ages. Bring gloves and rakes if you have them. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Fort opens on May 15th and will be open Wednesday through Sunday in 2024, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Little Lines, Big Fish Youth

Fishing Clinic

WALSENBURG– Learn how to catch the “big one” at Lathrop’s fishing clinic for kids under 16 years of age. The first 30 to sign up will receive a free fishing pole! Kids need to be supervised, but adults – save your angling for another day. This event is only for youth and will be held on  Saturday, May 11, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m at the Youth Fishing Pond at Lathrop State Park. Park passes are required. Mother’s Day Brunch

WALSENBURG–  On Sunday, May 12, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. there will be a Mother’s Day Brunch at the Stokehouse in the Walsenburg Mercantile. Come out for a Mother’s Day Brunch with music by MiDi and Mommy.  Kids are $10.99 all you can eat with bracelet decorating. Adults are $25 all you can eat with bracelet decorating. Bracelet decorating or key chain creating is $5.00 additional per person.

Water Conservancy District Board Meeting

WALSENBURG– The monthly board meeting of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District will be held at the Walsenburg Housing Authority activity room, 220 Russell St, Walsenburg, on Monday, May 13, 6 p.m. The draft agenda for the meeting will be available on the district’s website: www.hcwcd.net.

Call for Singers

LA VETA– The Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble, Southern Colorado’s premier community choir, is calling all singers, young and old, experienced or newbies; Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses – We’ll take all comers!  We’ll start preparing for the summer component of our “Making a Joyful Noise” series on Tuesday, May 14, at 6:15 p.m. sharp, at the La Veta United Methodist Church in La Veta and will meet  every Tuesday evening hence, same time, same place.  Call Kalima at 719-742-5333 with any questions you might have or email me at amuse@rmmi.net (put “Call for Singers!” in the subject line). Gardner Potluck and Social

GARDNER– Join us at the Gardner Community Center Wednesday, May 15, 5 p.m. for our monthly potluck and community gathering.  Come and share a meal with your neighbors, make new friends, and stay for some fun! Bear and Blue cleanup day

LA VETA– Volunteers are needed to help clean up these two trails on Thursday, May 16, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.. Each trail is .8 miles in length. The work involves the use of hand tools, including loppers and folding saws. The work session could end earlier given how short the trails are. More information will be shared soon. This work session will be rescheduled if there is too much snow on the trail or on the road.

SPLD presents the Wheelhouse Library Lab Storytime

WALSENBURG– Storytime with Mrs Flamingo on Friday, May 17, 10:30 a.m. with the Wheelhouse at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.  Starting with a STEAM/STEM storytime kids will then get to be an engineer in a fun, hands-on Makerspace experience!  Don’t miss this fun event!

Two Peaks Fitness Fun Fridays Fundraiser

LA VETA– Play Family Feud and raise money towards using a 14-passenger vehicle for Two Peaks Fitness Fun Fridays field trips, Friday, May 17, 5 p.m. at Mountain Merman Brewery, 220 S. Main in La Veta. Get a team together!! Signup sheets are available at Mountain Merman Brewery and at both Two Peaks Fitness locations (611 Main St, Walsenburg / 216 S Main St, La Veta). Proceeds from JD’s special brew will be donated. Support your kids by supporting Two Peaks Fitness!

HCHS Cucharas Canyon hike

WALSENBURG – The first tour of the season led by the Huerfano County Historical Society will be to the Cucharas Canyon east of Walsenburg Saturday,  May 18. Native American sites are in the canyon and will take vigorous walking to reach.  Or participants may remain on the rim and near the old stone house. To join the group, meet at 9 am at the Walsenburg Mining Museum (behind the courthouse) on West Fifth.  People may drive individual cars or car pool for the trip, which is about 40 miles roundtrip.  Cost is $10 per adult for members and $15 for non-members.  Bring lunch, water, and wear closed-toe shoes.  For information call the Heritage Center 719-738-2346 (open Thursdays and Fridays).  All participants are involved at their own risk.

North Veta Cemetery cleanup

WALSENBURG – Come help clean up the cemetery.  Located approximately 8 miles west of Walsenburg on Highway 160, on the north side.  Dirt road pull off before Navajo. Let’s get this cleaned up before Memorial Day!  Saturday May 18, 10am.  Bring water and tools.  Canceled if bad weather.

Oh My Macrame

LA VETA– “Oh My Macrame” is a free class in conjunction with the Spanish Peaks Library District and Walsenburg Craft Emporium. We will host this class at the La Veta Library ,10 S. Main St. on Saturday, May 18, 1 p.m. This class is taught by Sharona Whitley.

Colcha Embroidery

GARDNER– Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado. Please join Sandy Dolak for an introduction to Colcha Embroidery on Saturday, May 18, 1 – 3 p.m.  at La Clinica in Gardner, 24840 HWY 69. Come learn as well as get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form. Colcha embroidery has a wonderful history and revival that will be explored through this introductory class. Short-Term Rental Property Owners

LA VETA– Join Trustee Tony Masinton at the Municipal Building for an informational session on how to apply for a Short-Term Rental Permit in the Town of La Veta. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 7 p.m. in person and available to participate virtually. The virtual link will be available two days before on the town website or on the Town of La Veta Facebook page.

Community painting class

WALSENBURG– There will be a community painting class at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg on Thursday, May 23,  1 – 3 p.m. Jenn Dunn will lead the class painting a fanciful cowhead with flowers, perfect for May.  Funding has made this free class available to Huerfano County residents. Noxious Weed Workshop

TRINIDAD–  Have you ever wondered if the weed growing on your property were considered “Noxious” ? What does that even mean? Come find out on Friday, May 10, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the USDA – NRCS Office, 3590 E Main St in Trinidad. Join the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Spanish Peaks – Purgatoire River Conservation District to learn about noxious weeds, how to identify them and how to control them. 64th Annual Hoehne FFA Mayfair

HOEHNE– With the warm, springtime weather comes that time of year for the 64th annual Hoehne FFA Mayfair! This year Mayfair is set for Saturday, May 11th at the Hoehne Ag Ed Classroom and Shop. This is located around the back of Hoehne School closest to the railroad tracks. This annual event is a fundraiser for the Hoehne FFA Chapter to be able to purchase shop materials, participate in FFA competitions and pay for FFA-related expenses. As in previous years, the day will start off with livestock shows for market and/or breeding, after the conclusion of the livestock shows, a brisket lunch will be served at the Hoehne Community Center. 2nd Saturday Trail Work

TRINIDAD– Join Trinidad Trails Alliance for our May trail work day, plus a May Day party on Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m.  We’ll have a maypole dance, open jam session, some cold beverages and snacks, and best of all, a giveaway for teens and kids with a bicycle from Tarantula Cycles, a skateboard from pro skater Wrex Cook! Crick Carlisle

TRINIDAD– Local poet, writer and interesting local citizen, Crick Carlisle, is giving a presentation at the Trinidad Carnegie Public Library’s Community Room on Saturday, May 11, 1 to 3 p.m. Some years ago, Crick wrote a chronicle in verse of the Trojan War which he titled, When Reason Goes Away. It condenses the Iliad into about 20 pages. He has hand-bound a few copies which he will bring on Saturday.

Mother’s Day Tea Party

TRINIDAD– On Saturday, May 11, 2 – 4 p.m. join the Trinidad History Museum for a garden tea party celebrating Mother’s Day on the lawns of the Bloom Mansion! Teas from the Trinidad Tea Company, finger sandwiches, and scones will be served. Spaghetti Fundraiser Dinner

TRINIDAD– Spaghetti dinner is being provided by Jay and the Las Animas Grill on Saturday, May 11, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.  All proceeds will go to the Miner Football team to support the upcoming season and to send players to camp at Western College and for team uniforms. The players and coaches will be serving customers. This is a great opportunity to meet and interact with the players and the entire team. Please bring cash as it is the easiest way for the Las Animas Grill to get the proceeds to the team.

Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD– Join us for our Literary Open Mic Saturday, May 11, 6:30 p.m. and every second Saturday at The Commons At Space to Create! Every month we have a featured writer, followed by an open mic session for anyone who’d like to share their writing talents with the community. All ages are welcome! May Art Wall at TCPL

TRINIDAD– During the entire month of May, Melodie Lanosga is exhibiting some of her beautiful photographs that she has taken during her travels in Europe, the Mideast and Asia. Melodie will give an artist’s talk on Tuesday, May 14, 1 –  2 p.m., downstairs in the Community Room at Trinidad Carnegie Public Library.

Free Legal Help at the Library

TRINIDAD– Trinidad Public Library is happy to announce a new free legal help program. An attorney from Colorado Legal Services will visit the library on Thursday, May 16, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. to discuss civil matters with members of the community (criminal cases are not eligible). This service is available for low-income people and senior citizens sixty years

and older. The format will be first-come first-served, no reservations. The library will

maintain a signup sheet starting at 1:15. Colorado Legal Services is hoping to continue this program once a month on third Thursdays.

Community Rose Garden Planting

TRINIDAD– Join the team and get your hands dirty by planting roses in the Baca-Bloom Heritage Gardens on Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Get to know your museum team, volunteers, and community. Best of all, the Trinidad Garden Club will be on-site, so no experience required – just bring your enthusiasm and appetite for the free breakfast burritos and coffee!

Hands on History Day

TRINIDAD– Join us at the Trinidad History Museum on Saturday,  May 18, 12 p.m. and plant the seeds for a great summer. During this family-friendly afternoon, we will discuss the history of the gardens onsite, native plants, and more! Paint a clay pot, plant your very own flower, make paints and artwork from plants onsite, and even plant a seed in our museum gardens! Event is free and open to the whole family. Park Beautification Project

CIMARRON– You’re invited to be a part of the park beautification project Thursday, May 9 – Saturday May 11 starting at 10 a.m. all three days. This is the annual beatification project funded through the New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Grant Program. Bring your ideas, shovels and green thumb to help us complete the project of xeriscaping, building flower beds and an overall park clean up. 30th Children’s Fishing Derby

CIMARRON– Children, grab your fishing poles! The Children’s Fishing Derby at Cimarron Canyon State Park is coming up on Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m.  Children must be between 3 and 11 years old to participate. All New Mexico Game and Fish and State Park Rules and Regulations will be enforced. Sponsored by Friends of Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron Canyon State Park.

Mother’s Day dance

CIMARRON– The Village of Cimarron is hosting their first annual Mother’s Day dance on Sunday, May 12, 2 – 5 p.m. at Cimarron Park.  Wild Country will be playing music in the brand new pavilion. This event is free to attend and for everyone to attend. Please bring your dancing shoes and extra chairs if you wish.

Water Planning open house

RATON– The Colfax region water planning open house is happening in Raton on Monday, May 13, 3 – 7 p.m. at Isabella Castillo Performing Arts and Event Center. This open house is part of a statewide series that will help establish a roadmap for the future of water planning in New Mexico. Your voice is important, please help plan and take action for our water future.

Moonlight Hike

CAPULIN– Take a ranger guided hike at Capulin Volcano under the light of the moon on Saturday, May 18, 8:30 p.m. Subjects include night time biology, lunar geography, astronomy, and the park after dark. Come and experience the top of Capulin Volcano in a new light!

Wear warm clothing and layers as the weather may be chilly. Meet at the visitor center before heading up the volcano. Reservations are required; call 575-278-2201 with the number of people attending to reserve a spot!
