Huerfano County Communication Coalition meeting today

WALSENBURG– This month’s Coalition meeting will be on Thursday, May 2, 12 p.m., where Bradley Reitmair with the Huerfano Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring our lunch. The meeting will take place at the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg. This will be our last meeting before summer break, resuming our meetings in August.

Yoga Classes – All levels including beginners

WALSENBURG – Classes are held weekly on Thursday, 5:45 – 6:45 p.m. at Honeypot Warehouse, 111 W 10th St, Walsenburg with Ruth Heal RYT500 who has 15 years teaching experience. The gentle class will be taught in a way that respects individual needs, and students are encouraged to listen to their own bodies and minds to decide what feels right for them. All levels including complete beginners are welcome. There will be time after class to meet the teacher and other students. There is a gift of a yoga mat and bag for the first 10 people to attend 7 classes. This class is offered at NO CHARGE.

Small Business Week

HUERFANO– The Wheelhouse Retail Incubator and Community Makerspace has organized the

following events for Small Business Week. Thursday, May 2, 4 p.m. Small Business Meetup at Crafty Canary Brewery, 107 E. 5 th St. and on Friday  May 3, and Saturday May 4 there will be an incubator popup and Makerspace open house at the Wheelhouse, 609 Main St, 12 – 5 p.m.

Bee house building at SPLD

WALSENBURG– This Friday, May 3, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., at the Spanish Peaks LIbrary in Walsenburg, there will be a “bee house” building event that has been organized by one of the Trinidad State Trailbuilding students. This event will be a great opportunity for you to do something for the local native bees, who so badly need our help, and will be a total blast, especially for kids. Supplies will be provided, so all you need to do is show up and bring your creativity! We will also be handing out packets of seeds for local grasses and wildflowers, which are a couple more things local bees love.

Book Dragons Book Club

WALSENBURG— Every Friday at 5 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for their Book Dragons Book Club. To join, stop by the library or call us at 719-738-2774 to reserve a book for you.

Gravel Adventure Field Guide Ride

HUERFANO– Created in partnership with the Huerfano County Tourism Board, join in on a community gravel bike ride to receive your Gravel Adventure Field Guide on Saturday, May 4th 8:45 a.m. This guide shows routes throughout the county and we will be hosting our first ride! Following the “Legends of Grandote Gravel Route” (39 miles). We will be pairing into small groups to set out to La Veta from the Walsenburg Mercantile and then return back. New Beginning T’ai Chi Classes at The La Veta School of the Arts

LA VETA– Often referred to as “The gentle art of yielding” the ancient, slow moving Chinese practice of T’ai Chi Chuan is also healing in many ways.  New, beginning classes will be held Starting this Saturday, May 4, 9 a.m. at the La Veta School of the Arts, 109 West Ryus- across from the town park.  Beginning classes will continue every Saturday morning from 9 – 10 a.m. during the month of May.  The cost is a donation of $5 per class or $20 For a month of classes.  For more information, call Peggy Zehring  719-742-5193, or email PeggyZehring@msn.com or LVArtSchool @yahoo.com

Weekend music at the Stokehouse

American Legion Post 16 Meeting

WALSENBURG– The Brian T. Chiquette Post 16 of The American Legion will have their monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 8, at 6 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Ave. in Walsenburg.  All Veterans are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting. NOW That’s What I Call Music Bingo: Songs from the Mouse

LA VETA– On Thursday, May 9 at 6 p.m., please join La Veta Public Library at Mountain Merman Brewing Company,220 S. Mother’s Day Bake Sale

LA VETA– The Auxiliary of the La Veta Village is hosting a bake sale on Saturday, May 11 beginning at 10 a.m. This is absolutely the perfect opportunity to purchase something special and homemade for your mother, grandmother, aunt, or friend. A tasty goodie is always a perfect gift for someone you love and admire! The bake sale will be at the La Veta Public Library, 310 South Main Street, La Veta.

Mother’s Day Brunch

WALSENBURG–  On Sunday, May 12, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. there will be a Mother’s Day Brunch at the Stokehouse in the Walsenburg Mercantile. Come out for a Mother’s Day Brunch at the Stokehouse with music by MiDi and Mommy.  Kids are $10.99 all you can eat with bracelet decorating. Adults are $25 all you can eat with bracelet decorating. Bracelet decorating or key chain creating is $5.00 additional per person.

Friends of the Library Silent Auction Fundraiser

TRINIDAD– The Friends of the Library Silent Auction Fundraiser will be held from Monday, April 29 to  Friday, May 3, 7:45 p.m.  In conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk, Books & More will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. only on Friday, May 3.  We will have door prizes, Colie’s cookies and a 15% discount for most purchases for everyone.  Senior citizens will get their regular Senior Day discount until closing.

TRINIDAD– Self help author, Victoria Alai, will give a presentation at the Trinidad Carnegie Public Library on Tuesday, May 7, 2 – 3: p.m., downstairs in the Community Room. Victoria wrote Survival 101: A Guide to Staying Afloat in the Deep Waters of Life. Her theme for this presentation will be “From surviving to Thriving.”

64th Annual Hoehne FFA Mayfair

HOEHNE– With the warm, springtime weather comes that time of year for the 64th annual Hoehne FFA Mayfair! This year Mayfair is set for Saturday, May 11th at the Hoehne Ag Ed Classroom and Shop. This is located around the back of Hoehne School closest to the railroad tracks. This annual event is a fundraiser for the Hoehne FFA Chapter to be able to purchase shop materials, participate in FFA competitions and pay for FFA-related expenses. As in previous years, the day will start off with livestock shows for market and/or breeding, after the conclusion of the livestock shows, a brisket lunch will be served at the Hoehne Community Center. Mother’s Day Tea Party

Spaghetti Fundraiser Dinner

TRINIDAD– Spaghetti dinner is being provided by Jay and the Las Animas Grill on Saturday, May 11, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.  All proceeds will go to the Miner Football team to support the upcoming season and to send players to camp at Western College and for team uniforms. The players and coaches will be serving customers. This is a great opportunity to meet and interact with the players and the entire team. Please bring cash as it is the easiest way for the Las Animas Grill to get the proceeds to the team.

Open Mic for all Literary Souls

RATON– What is Blind Date with a Book? A “blind date with a book” is like a regular blind date where you don’t know what you’re getting until you get there. But, with books! The Librarians at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton have selected various items from our extensive collection and wrapped them up just for you! If you are feeling daring this is the program for you.

It’s a fun way to be introduced to new authors, books or DVDs that you may have judged by the cover or title. Try your luck and fall in love with reading again. This program runs now through the end of May.

National Day of Prayer

ANGEL FIRE– Stop by Frontier Park in Angel Fire Thursday, May 2, anytime between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. for a self guided prayer and praise experience. Moreno Valley Community Churches will have tables set up inviting you to pray for local, state, national and world leaders, military, veterans, police, fire, EMS, pastors, chaplains, marriage and families, and schools.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

RATON— After school art classes have started at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday, 4 – 5 p.m. To reserve a spot, contact the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, or just show up to the first class.  It’s on a first come first served basis, if you did not reserve a spot.

A Night on the Trail

RATON– The Colfax County Society of Art, History and Archaeology invites you to a night on the trail of history on Friday, May 3, 6:30 p.m. Walk the timeline of the Santa Fe Trail, gather around for storytelling, songs, poetry, & enjoy a bite of cobbler along with fellow trailblazers at the Raton Museum. Experience the history of the trail that impacted Colfax County and the world. The Santa Fe Trail 200th Timeline Exhibit will be on display at the Raton Museum now through Saturday, May 25th.

Park Beautification Project

CIMARRON– You’re invited to be a part of the park beautification project Thursday, May 9 – Saturday May 11 starting at 10 a.m. all three days. This is the annual beatification project funded through the New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Grant Program. Bring your ideas, shovels and green thumb to help us complete the project of xeriscaping, building flower beds and an overall park clean up. 30th Children’s Fishing Derby

CIMARRON– Children, grab your fishing poles! The Children’s Fishing Derby at Cimarron Canyon State Park is coming up on Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m.  Children must be between 3 and 11 years old to participate. All New Mexico Game and Fish and State Park Rules and Regulations will be enforced. Sponsored by Friends of Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron Canyon State Park.
