Apply for Junior Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Scholarships  

OUR WORLD— The Junior Colorado Cattlemen’s Association is offering two scholarships for students interested in careers in agriculture.
The Fiebig-Lee Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled at Colorado State University, majoring or minoring in an agricultural-related field, health and human sciences, or a pre-vet undergraduate. https://tinyurl.com/h2dcz7x7
The Grace & Oley Kohlman Scholarship is open to all current JCCA members. Preference will be given to students majoring or minoring in an agricultural-related field in the state of Colorado.     https://tinyurl.com/yc3ubk6r

Movie: Where the Crawdads Sing

LA VETA— Join us at La Veta Public Library, 310 S. Main St., as we show the film based on the global best-selling phenomenon “Where the Crawdads Sing” on Thursday, May 11, 2 p.m. Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh. Free with refreshments.

Free Wrestling Camp from a pro

WALSENBURG— Jonathon Andreatta, a John Mall High School graduate, who went on to be a two time All-American and National Champion, and now coaches wrestling in West Virginia, will be holding a free wrestling camp on Friday, May 12 for anyone.  Beginner session will be held  from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and an advanced sessions will run from 12 to 2 p.m., and another from 3 to 5 p.m. The event will be held at John Mall High School in Walsenburg.  Contact Josh Vialpando at 719-250-9251 to reserve a spot.

LV Village Annual Bake Sale

LA VETA— The La Veta Village is hosting a Mother’s Day BAKE SALE on Friday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the La Veta Library, 310 South Main Street.  Cookies, pies, cakes, and other goodies will be available for a small donation.  The Auxiliary continues to sponsor events to assist in delivering services to its residents.  So, mark your calendars, and, COME JOIN US on May 12! And, get a special treat for “Mom.”

WALSENBURG— Join the Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg every Friday from 10:30-11:30 a.m.  Join our Children’s Librarian, Mrs Flamingo as she reads a story and participate in a craft related to the story!  Don’t miss this fun and creative program to share with your kids! Wisdom Archives: Introduction to Colcha Embroidery

WALSENBURG—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado. Please join Sandy Dolak for an introduction to Colcha Embroidery on Friday, May 12 from 1-3 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Come learn as well as get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form. SPLD Presents Flicks at the Library

WALSENBURG— Join us on Friday, May 12, at 1:30 p.m. at Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.  Bring the kids to watch Moana, a story of an adventurous teenager on a mission to save her people.  Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers her own identity.  Free popcorn, just bring your own beverage!

USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive  

HUERFANO — Continuing a tradition that first began in 1993, the 31st annual letter carriers’ stamp out Hunger Food Drive will be Saturday, May 13.
“Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day,” said Jeff Frey, Colorado Food Drive Coordinator.
You can contribute to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by putting non-perishable food items in a bag by your mailbox.  The Walsenburg Post Office will gather all donations and donate them to Dorcas Circle Food & Clothing Pantry, located at  911 S. Main in Walsenburg.

Wildflower & Herb Walk #2

Beginning T’ai Chi at LVSA

Movie Matinee: Rumble, The Indians Who Rocked the World

This revelatory documentary brings to light the profound and overlooked influence of Indigenous people on popular music in North America. Focusing on music icons like Link Wray, Jimi Hendrix, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Taboo (The Black Eyed Peas), Charley Patton, Mildred Bailey, Jesse Ed Davis, Robbie Robertson, and Randy Castillo, Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World shows how these pioneering Native American musicians helped shape the soundtracks of our lives. Exhibit No Rules and Al Clymer Opening

LA VETA— The Spanish Peaks Arts Council(SPACe) in La Veta invites everyone to the opening reception for two new shows this Saturday, May 13, 5 – 7 p.m. In the west gallery, “Exhibit No Rules” is an exciting collection of original art by 27 area artists. Artists were encouraged to share artwork that challenges the viewer with the unexpected. Over 60 pieces of artwork include traditional, abstract, expressionistic, and unique styles in a variety of media.
Additionally, nationally acclaimed artist Albert Anderson Clymer is showing a collection of energetic new paintings in the east gallery. There is no admission fee, but donations are gratefully appreciated. Refreshments will be provided. The SPACe Gallery is located at 132 W. Ryus, in the La Veta Town Park. La Veta Writes Writing Group

LA VETA— La Veta Writes is a fun, welcoming writing group open to all over age 14. Whether you’re a longtime writer, a song writer, or simply feeling to make writing a bigger part of your life, come check out La Veta Writes on Tuesday, May 16. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 3 – 5 p.m. at The Parkside Art Gallery, 127 W. Ryus Ave. If you are interested, bring a sample of your writing. Weekly wildflower & weed walks

LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer. They will take place every Wednesday, now through fall, from 5 – 6 p.m. somewhere in Huerfano County, often right in or near our cities or towns. Farmer’s Market Season is here

HUERFANO— It’s that time of year again! Get ready for a wonderful season filled with lots of local goodies grown, supplied, crafted and for purchase. La Veta will have their market every Thursday, 3-5 p.m. starting May 18th in the park next to the library on Main St. Cuchara will have their market on Fridays starting May 19, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Cuchara Mountain Mercantile. Gardner will have their markets every Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. under the pavilion next to the Methodist church. Last but most certainly not least is Walsenburg’s market held every Sunday at Heritage Park on Main St. near the railroad tracks from 12 – 2 p.m. starting May 29. Huerfano Honors Its Own

WALSENBURG— The May honorees that will be presented at the County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 23, 10 a.m. are Elder, Dr. Bill Cluff and younger Ms. Willow Clark. There will be a reception at 11 a.m. at SPRHC for the many health care workers that have had the honor of working with Dr. Cluff. At 2 p.m. a community reception will be held at La Veta Village Assisted Living, 109 E. Francisco Street to honor both Dr. Cluff and Willow for their important contributions to our county. Another community project sponsored by Huajatolla Heritage Foundation.

Mother’s Day fun Run

TRINIDAD— Join the colorful Mother’s day run/walk on Saturday, May 13 at 9 a.m. Bring your mom, bonus mom, grandma, aunts or any “mom” like figures and the whole family for this fun event! Participants will run/walk the designated route through color stations where they will be showered with tossed color as they run through! Sounds like fun! Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD— The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce its monthly event for May, 2023; the Second Saturday Poetry Series continues on Saturday, May 13. A literary event for all, the Series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at the Space to Create Commons, 218 West Main St. The evening begins at 7 pm with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. This event is free and open to the public. Featured this month is New Mexico poet, PW Covington.

Trinidad Water Festival

TRINIDAD— Every May, children from all over Las Animas, Huerfano, and Colfax counties gather at the Trinidad State College campus for a day of educational, engaging, and energizing activities focused on water. Agua es Vida (water is life) continues to be the motto for the festival. This year’s Trinidad Water Festival is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, on the Trinidad State College campus. An opening ceremony kicks things off at 8:30 a.m. with presentations running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in participating in the festival, either as a school or presenter, please contact us at tomandlindaperry@gmail.com.

Go Baby Go!

TRINIDAD—  Children’s Services at SCDDS will be hosting their first Go Baby Go! event on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. ! Build teams will assemble and customize two ride-on motorized cars designed to give increased mobility to toddlers with developmental disabilities or delays. Children’s Services Department at Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities is hosting the adaptive car building and outreach event at their office in Trinidad, 415 S. Indiana Ave.  Two toddlers from Huerfano & Las Animas counties will receive a car to support their development! A community outreach event titled, ‘Things That Go!’ will be hosted in conjunction with the Go Baby Go! workshop. This event will be open to children and families in the surrounding area and include transportation themed activities.

Armed Forces Day Parade

TRINIDAD— The Las Animas County Veteran’s Memorial Committee is proud to present the 2023 Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. Featuring the Ft. Summer Reading Program – All Together Now

TRINIDAD— Join us this summer for our 2023 Summer Reading Program! We will have special guest readers, celebrate our community make some crafts, earn prizes and explore new worlds and adventures with a new book. The summer reading program is for ages 0-17. 29th Children’s Fishing Derby

CIMARRON— Bring the kids and enjoy the day at the Gravel Pit Lakes – Maverick Campground at Cimmaron Canyon State Park for their annual kids fishing Derby on Saturday, May 13, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. This event is for children ages 3-11 and there is no entry fee. Free t-shirts and goody bags for the first 100 entrants. New Mexico Game and Fish Fishing Regulations and New Mexico State Park Day Use Fees apply. Blue Sky Ranch open house

Trail Project at Capulin Volcano National Monument

RATON— Join us for a two-day project at Capulin Volcano National Monument (near Raton). The volunteer work is slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, and will include overnight camping within the park.  All meals, tools and training will be provided.  NMVFO will improve two trails: the Boca Trail (a two-mile loop) and the Lava Flow Trail (a one-mile loop). Work includes lopping, moving rocks, and widening trail in some sections. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the foundation board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.
