Want to make a difference?

HUERFANO— Huajatolla Heritage Foundation has been making a difference in Huerfano County for more than seven years. We approach our mission of promoting cultural equity through a variety of programs and events. Recently our activities have blossomed beyond our wildest expectations. We are looking for some of the good people of Huerfano County to join our non-profit as board members. The board meets quarterly. Library at Your Door

WALSENBURG— Library at your door is a new service at the Spanish Peaks Library.  Here’s how it works: if there is a book you would like and it’s not available in our catalog, log into spld.org and go to Services, click on Library at Your Door and fill out the form.  If your request is approved, we will buy the book and Amazon will ship it directly to you.  When you have finished reading, bring the book back to the library and we will add it to our collection!  This service is available for books, large print books, DVD’s and Blu-Ray.

Healthcare Foundation scholarships available

HUERFANO—  The Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation is soliciting applicants for scholarships that may be available to you if you are interested in pursuing higher education in any of the biomedical or healthcare related fields.  Are you an individual earning a high school diploma or equivalent or are you an individual wanting to further your education in vocational studies, certification programs, an associates degree, or a 4-year college degree?  You can apply for a scholarship.  Applications are available from La Veta Public Library, Spanish Peaks Public Library District, your high school counselor or Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center Administration Office.  Or contact Patricia Davis at mrsdr50@gmail.com to request an application.  Application deadline is April 17, 2023, at 4 p.m.

Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic

HUERFANO—Bergen Spay and Neuter Alliance is teaming up with Mile High Canine Rescue, Colorado Animal Rescue Express and Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare Association to bring another low cost spay and neuter clinic to Huerfano County. SPLD Flicks

WALSENBURG— SPLD Flicks at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg presents The Secret of Roan Inish, a story centered on the Irish folklore of Selkies, seals that shed their skin to become human. It is family legend that Fiona’s brother was swept away in infancy and raised by a Selkie. Join us on Friday, March 10, 1:30 p.m. we’ll have free popcorn but be sure to BYOB.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

La Veta Fishing Club Annual Meeting

LA VETA— All members and/or anyone interested in more information on how to become a member should join us Friday, March 10, 6 p.m. at the La Veta Community Center, 131 E. Ryus Ave in La Veta. Drawing for door prizes for those that attend.

La Veta Library Trivia Night

LA VETA— Friday, March 10, 7 p.m. Join La Veta Public Library at Mountain Merman Brewing Company, 210 S. Main St. for a night of St. Patrick’s Day Trivia! 5 rounds, up to 7 people on a team. Cuchara Snowshoe Race

CUCHARA— Registration is now open for our 1st Annual Snowshoe Races taking place on Saturday, March 11 at the Cuchara Mountain Park. This event features distances of 5 miles, 11 miles, 16 miles and 50k and a multiple loop course. No stress, come try it out! Cuchara averages over 250 inches of snow each season, but should conditions not be conducive to snowshoeing, we’’ host a regular ‘ol trail race. Weekend movie at the Fox: 65

WALSENBURG– The historic Fox Theatre’s weekend movie is 65, PG – 13, 1h 30m. After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth — 65 million years ago. Low Cost Vaccine Clinic

LA VETA— You asked and we heard you! Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare Association is hosting a low cost vaccine clinic for perts that are already fixed on Saturday, March 11, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  We will be in the parking lot of the 4H building 401-499 Moore Ave. This will be at the same location but separate from the spay and neuter clinic. Pet Devotion in Motion, LLC, Dr. Hay, and Brenda Eakes will be there assisting us! First come, first serve, no appointments

Dr Seuss’ Happy Birthday Rockin’ Shenanigans Party

WALSENBURG— Come celebrate with SPLD in Walsenburg for Dr Seuss’ Happy Birthday Rockin’ Shenanigans Party, Tuesday, March 14, from 5 – 7 p.m.  We will have cake, Kool-Aid and coffee, rock painting and a Dr. Seuss craft, a Cat in the Hat storytime and a free Cat in the Hat mask!  Don’t miss the fun!

Free Health Screenings

GARDNER— Free health screenings will be provided on Tuesday, March 14, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. for anyone interested. The screenings will take place at the Gardner Church Hall. See Mickey D’Ambrosia to sign up for your screening. There is no charge for the screenings and no fasting is required. The screenings provided will include a Cholesterol Panel, Hemoglobin A1c, Blood Pressure and a Pre Diabetes Screening, each taking about 15 minutes.

Friends of the Library book sale

WALSENBURG— Friends of the Library Book Sale for the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg is coming soon!  Clean your bookshelves and closets and donate your gently used books before the sale.  Book & Bake Sale is on Thursday, March 16 & Friday, March 17 from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

2 Peaks, 1 Book movie event

LA VETA— The first event in this year’s “2 Peaks-1 Book” Community book read will be the showing of the original Swedish (subtitled) version of the film “A Man Called Ove”. This critically acclaimed movie is funny, touching and unforgettable as the life of a grumpy old man changes when a young family moves in next door and the events that brought him to the place in life are revealed. Join us on Thursday March 16, 2 p.m. at LVPL for this heartwarming film.  We also have copies of the novel available for you to read before our book discussion slated for March 30th. As always, free with refreshments.

St. Patrick’s Day Bingo at La Veta Merc

Flamingo Story Time

WALSENBURG – Flamingo Storytime, will be held on Saturday, March 18 and every other Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.  Mrs. Flamingo will be reading a story out loud to any children (or children at heart) who would like to listen. each child who attends will receive a free book! Small Acreage Workshop

WALSENBURG— Huerfano County Small Acreage Workshop is hosted by the Huerfano County Assessor office and the C.S.U Extention office on Saturday, March 18, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Join several different county officials including San Isabel, City of Walsenburg, Sheriff Newman at the Huerfano County Community Center for a informational day. Paint & Brew with La Veta Creative District

LA VETA— Join us for a fun, creative evening of painting while sipping a brew. Artist, Amber Huff, will lead participants in painting an astoundingly silent flier, an owl. Oktoberfest Chili Cookoff

LA VETA— Calling all chili chefs! It’s that time of the year again when the Oktoberfest gang hosts their annual fundraising Chili Cookoff. The fun begins on Saturday, March 25, 4:30 – 7 p.m. at the Mission Deli Restaurant in LaVeta.  We are looking for the best the county has to offer, so if you would like to compete for great prizes plus bragging rights, stop by the LaVeta Library and fill out an entry form for your red, green or surprise concoction. Mark your calendars for a night of food, fun and even a silent auction.

Call for Loan of Historic La Veta Photos

LA VETA— The La Veta Historic Preservation Committee will be holding a Thank You Reception and Awards Ceremony in June of 2023.  This reception will be to thank our community for it’s help in preserving our valuable La Veta Town character, and to present National designation plaques to our Town’s five nationally recognized properties .  Refreshments will be provided and a photo display will be available for viewing.  If you have an historic photo of La Veta that you would allow us to display at this reception, we would appreciate the loan of such photos.  Please contact Terry at 303-875-0576 (phone or text), or taamalfitano@msn.com to discuss your photo and how we would receive it and return it to you.

LAS ANIMAS

Schneider Brewery restoration/ demo project has started

TRINIDAD— As announced last September, Downtown Trinidad Development Group plans to preserve the landmark Schneider Brewery building through a selective demolition and restoration project, which began on Monday, Jan. 23. Trinidad Construction Group is the general contractor for the project. Major sections of the complex deemed structurally unsound by Sun Mountain Design Group will be removed during this process, which is estimated to last 90 days. Short-term traffic disruptions are expected. Plans for the Schneider Brewery buildings’ renewal may include a mixture of retail, residential and office spaces.
The brewery is located at 236 North Convent St.

Spring cleaning at the Wormhole Loop

TRINIDAD— Join the Trinidad Trails Alliance on Saturday, March 11, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. for their monthly trail work day. Bring your own tools and dress for the weather. This week we will be focusing on spring cleaning for the Wormhole Loop trails.

Adult winter reading program

TRINIDAD— The Trinidad Carnegie Public Library is excited to announce the Adult Winter Reading Program, open to anyone 18 years or older. The program runs through Friday, March 17. Once you register for the program, the library will be using a computer application, ReadSquared, to track your progress. Register online at  https://trinidadpubliclibrary.org. If you don’t have access to the internet, the library staff can register you and log your reading for you.
On Saturday, March 11, at 1 p.m., will be  a discussion of:  When the Emperor Was Devine, by Julie Otsuka, and Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel. Both events are open to the public—you don’t have to be registered in the reading program, and you are welcome to come whether or not you read any of the books. This is a chance to hear about some great reads, and everyone is welcome to ask questions and join in.

Free tutoring for PreK-8 kids

COLFAX— PED announces its new tutoring service in partnership with Paper that focuses on mathematics, language arts and science. The program offers students in grades preK-8 from New Mexico Title I Schools access to free academic support from tutors on a secure platform. Participating students will receive 20 hours of tutoring at no cost to families. Parents can sign students up at OutofSchool.Tutoring@ped.nm.gov

Peer support groups

RATON— Are you struggling with addiction? Would you like to support a friend who is struggling with addiction? Join Elias Romero, a 17 year certified Peer Support Worker who will facilitate the group. Assisted by Zia Youth’s McLean at Zia Youth, 207 Park Ave, in Raton on Saturdays. 18- 30 year olds will meet from 9 – 10 a.m. and under 18 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally art competition

RATON— We want your design for this year’s logo! Raton MainStreet invites you to it’s annual Balloon Rally art work competition. Submit your design to Raton MainStreet office at 145 S. First Street, no later than Friday, March 10. Entries must include “2023 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally” and “Raton, NM”. Raton Tiger Cheerleading State fundraiser

RATON— Join the Raton Tiger Cheerleaders for their fundraising enchilada dinner on Saturday, March 11, at 5 p.m. Plates are $10 and include enchiladas, rice, beans, and a sopapilla plus a drink. Raton Little League Baseball season kickoff

RATON— Come out and support our youth and enjoy the fun filled day for the whole family. Join us on Sunday, March 12 at the Raton Little League/Minor Field. The pancake breakfast is from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and is $7. The Homerun derby starts at 10 a.m. and is $10 to participate. Prizes will be given out for each division. The concession stand will also be open for snacks and drinks.

Outdoor recreation input needed

RATON— As part of their statewide recreation survey, Public Land Solutions will be in Raton at Moss Adventures on Wednesday, March 15 at 5:30 p.m. to get feedback from Raton and Colfax County residents about outdoor recreation in the county and the state. There will be free food, and all ages are welcome.
