Two Peaks One Book “Go As A River” book discussion

LA VETA— Join La Veta Library, 310 S. Main St. on Thursday, March 7 at 2 p.m. as we discuss our 2024 Two Peaks One Book selection “Go As a River” by Shelley Read and how it revolves around our theme of Resilience. This book takes place in 1948 rural Colorado and explores love and loss, prejudice, despair, survival and redemption. This book is inspirational in always finding a way to go forward. “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” Watch Party

LA VETA— As the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts,127 W. Francisco St. prepares for their summer musical “Spamalot” (opening July 19, 2024) the La Veta Library will show the movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” at the theater on Friday, March 8 at 6 p.m. Join us to watch the 1975 cult classic film as the Monty Python comedy clan skewers King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they quest far and wide for the Holy Grail.

Dems Caucus and Assembly

WALSENBURG— Attention all Huerfano County Democrats. The Caucus and Assembly to put local and state candidates on the June primary ballot will be held on Saturday, March 9 at the Huerfano County Community Center. It is imperative to have as many Democrats attend to assist various candidates to get on the ballot. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the Caucus starting at 10 a.m. Registration for delegates at the Assembly is 1 p.m. with the Assembly beginning at 2 p.m. Attendees will determine how many of the four Huerfano Democratic candidates for County Commissioner will get on the June primary ballot.
There will also be votes for District Attorney, and state and CD3 congressional candidates. This is grassroots politics at its best.
If you are not registered to vote go to www.govotecolorado.gov or do so at the Huerfano County Clerk’s Office. If your address or marital status has changed, it also needs to be updated twenty-two days prior to March 9.

“Go As A River” as History and Lit

LA VETA— Join La Veta Library at the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts, 127 W. Francisco on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. as we welcome back Edward R. Crowther. Edward R. Crowther, PhD (Auburn University) is emeritus professor of history at Adams State university where he taught from 1988-2018. This is his 5th talk in La Veta & he has a tripartite focus for his talk on “Go As A River”. The historical context of the Colorado River Storage Project, the fate of the Denver, Rio Grande & Western Railway, & especially a literary analysis of tropes & themes in the novel itself. Huajatolla Heritage recipe sharing

HUERFANO— Huajatolla Heritage Foundation is pleased to be working on another cookbook featuring great recipes and stories (and more) from Huerfano County. Sandy Dolak will be at the La Veta Library Wednesday, March 13, 1 – 3 p.m. and at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg on Thursday March 21, 1 – 3 p.m. to collect recipes and stories for consideration for the new cookbook. She will also share some vintage cookbooks from Huerfano County and the rich legacy of good cooks! Please consider participating in this important cultural preservation project! SPLD presents Teen Pizza

WALSENBURG— Every Wednesday, from 4 – 6 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for PIZZA, provided by GubGub’s Pizza and Ice Cream. Teens are welcome to come hang with us after school every Wednesday, no catch, no demands just stop by and check out our library. We have Wii, computers, tablets, games, pizza and fun!

American Legion Post 16 Meeting

WALSENBURG— The Brian T. Chiquette Post 16 of The American Legion will have their monthly meeting at on Wednesday, March 13, 6 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Ave. Walsenburg.  All Veterans are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting. Eagles Auxiliary meeting date change

WALSENBURG— The Fraternal Order of Eagles Women’s Auxiliary has scheduled meetings in March on the 1st and 15th . However, the State Spring Conference is scheduled for March 15th – 17th. As most of
the officers are attending the Spring Conference, we have rescheduled our second meeting for Wednesday, March 13, 7 p.m. at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main Street, Walsenburg. Please adjust your calendar!

Friends of the Library Book Sale

WALSENBURG— Friends of the Spanish Peaks Library District is having our Book Sale, Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 415 Walsen Ave, Walsenburg.  Lots of books! Something for everyone.  Fiction, Romance, Westerns, Drama, etc.  Non-fiction English, Science, History, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Health, Religion, Self-Help. Children’s Books a great deal of Juvenile and Young Adult fiction as well.  Prices are 25¢ for children’s and young adult; , 50¢ for paperbacks, $1.00 for hardback.  Or fill a small box for $5, medium for $7.50, or large for $10. Matinee at LVPL “The River”

LA VETA— For the 3rd program in the La Veta Library’s Two Peaks/Book Community Book Read series,  the La Veta Library will be showing the highly acclaimed and emotionally charged movie, “The River”, starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek. Join us on Thursday, March 14, 2 p.m. for this moving and unforgettable film about a young farm couple who face great hardships and the ravages of nature  with determination, faith and perseverance. La Veta candidates’ night

LA VETA — There will be a candidates’ night for the upcoming April town elections in La Veta on Thursday, March 14, 6:30 p.m. at the La Veta Community Center.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for questions to be submitted by community members. No questions will be accepted after 6:55 p.m. A moderator will be present and the forum will begin at 7 p.m.
The candidates will be two minutes to make an introduction and then the questions will be read by the moderators. If a question is directed to a specific candidate, the candidate will be given two minutes to answer. If the question is directed to all candidates, each candidate will have two minutes to answer.
Mayor Doug Brgoch is running unopposed for another term. Trustee candidates are; Corinne Cordon, Jenny Peil, Timothy Tady and Carlton Croft.

Ribbon Cutting for Lathrop State Park’s New Trail and Track Chair

WALSENBURG— Lathrop State Park is hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, March 15, 11 a.m. for its new trail and track chair. Yummy goodies will be served. Park passes are required to enter Lathrop Park.

Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation Wine Tasting

LA VETA— Join us for our annual wine tasting event on Saturday, March 16, 5 – 8 p.m., which supports the Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation’s 501(c)3 charitable and educational mission. The event will be held at the Grandote Events Center, 5535 Co. Highway 12 in La Veta and tickets are $50 per person. Hors D’oeuvres are provided by Alys’ Restaurant. Discussion on the large animal veterinarian shortage in Huerfano

WALSENBURG— Huerfano County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a discussion on the large animal veterinarian shortage in Huerfano County.  There will be professors from CSU as well as other professionals in the field providing information and leading the discussion. This will be held on Friday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center in the meeting room.n.  At 9:30 there will be donuts, coffee, tea and juice provided.  The speakers will start at 10.  This is not limited to just ranchers, but also applies to anyone who cares for large animals and anyone interested can attend.  Call John Stroh at 719-331-8859 if you have questions about this program.

Trail work day

TRINIDAD— The Trinidad Trails Alliance will be finishing up where they left off in November on the Blue Trail at Trinidad Lake State Park. Meet on Saturday, March 9, 10 a.m. at the south entrance. Tools and snacks will be provided but please bring whatever else you feel may be needed.

Coal Train Records and Music Center Grand Opening Saturday

TRINIDAD— There’s a great new store opening in Trinidad this Saturday, March 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for music and art lovers.  Coal Train Records and Music Center, a mixed media music store is opening up at 108 N. Commercial.  Coal Train will carry classic vinyl, radios, stereos, instruments, astt & supplies, 8 track and cassettes, books and sheet music.   Refreshments are being provided by Sita’s Kitchen.

Solar eclipse

TRINIDAD— The Trinidad Public Library is excited to present astronomy professor Zack Stockbridge on Saturday, March 9, 1 – 3 p.m., downstairs in the community room. There is a solar eclipse coming on April 8th, and Zack’s topic is “How to View the 2024 Eclipse.” The library hopes lots of people from the community will come to learn about the eclipse, and to
pick up a free pair of safety glasses for viewing the solar eclipse.

Every month we have a featured writer, followed by and open mic session for anyone who would like to share their writing talents with the community. Kids’ Night Out

TRINIDAD— Do you like dogs? Great. We do, too; in fact, we love them so much that we are writing a series of fun dog behavior handbooks for kids and their parents. Even though the books aren’t finished yet, we would like to show you what we have and see if you could give us some feedback and help us make them more family friendly. LAC Creative Writing Contest

TRINIDAD— Wanted, all K – 12 students for the Las Animas County Creative Writing Contest! This is open to all themes and genres, any grade as long as you’re a student in the county, home-schoolers welcome! All entries will be made available as a book with four $500 Scholarships being awarded. All work must be submitted by Friday, March 22. United Women of Faith Women’s Conference

RATON— The United Women of Faith Women’s Conference this year will be on Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9. This will be the first two-day conference since 2020. The topic will be the many Marys in the New Testament and how their 1st-century faith connects to our 21st-century faith. We’ll use a combination of studying, writing, reflecting and creating in paper or fabric. Friday night we’ll introduce the many Marys and the passages where they are mentioned. You’ll be invited to select one to spend more time with on Saturday. You’ll be able to go deeper into Bible study or be creative. Registration forms are attached with this email and the deadline for early registration is March 5. Art classes at Arthur Johnson Library

RATON— After school art classes have started at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday, 4 – 5 p.m. To reserve a spot, contact the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, or just show up to the first class.  It’s on a first come first served basis, if you did not reserve a spot.
The adult art class will be held on Saturdays, starting at 3 p.m. If you are interested please call 575-445-9711, or email the library at Library@cityofRaton.com to reserve a spot.

Dark Sky experience at Capulin

CAPULIN— On Saturday, March 9, 6:30 – 9 p.m., join us for an exceptional Dark Sky experience. Telescopes are provided by us, and the dark northeastern New Mexico skies by nature. You will see planets, galaxies, nebula, and other amazing sights all with your own eyes.
Capulin Volcano is at a higher altitude of over 6,000 feet. Nights can get chilly; make sure to bundle up! A jacket, long pants, and closed toe shoes are recommended to attend a Dark Sky program. No reservations are needed. Dark Sky programs may be changed or cancelled due to weather.

Dungeons & Dragons Sundays

RATON— Every Sunday at 1 p.m. at ZIA Youth, join Niko, Alex, and their merry band of Ratonians who transform into Knights, Dwarves, and Swamp Witches for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Your Nerd Tribe is waiting for you to discover yourself among them! ZIA Youth is located at 207 Park Ave, Raton and is a safe place for 9-17 year olds to hang out after school.

Angel Fire
closing weekend

ANGEL FIRE— Check out all the activities and Angel Fire Resort as the ski season comes to a close. Events include dummy gelande which is like a twist on a traditional cardboard box derby, with a bigger & longer jump. After is the pond skim, where skiiers glide across a pool of water. There will also be down hill biking live musci and so much more. The fun happens Saturday, March 24, lifts will be open at 9 a.m. and events start at  1  p.m.
