Diapers and more distribution New Date

OUR WORLD— This two day event will take place on Thursday, April 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Las Animas County Fairgrounds, 2000 N. Linden, Trinidad and Friday, April 5, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Ave Walsenburg. Families can receive free diaper bundles, wipes, gently used clothing, baby gear and more. All items are free. If you have donations call HULA 719-845-0463 .

Week of the Young Child

OUR WORLD— HuLA’s annual Week of the Young Child Celebration will take place on Saturday, April 6, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at Trinidad Community Center, 1309 Beshoar St, Trinidad and Sunday, April 7, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell, Walsenburg. This year’s theme is GO WILD IN THE OUTDOORS. The event is FREE. Prizes and raffle items will be given each day.

“The River” Two Peaks One Book Movie

LA VETA— In the La Veta Library’s Two Peaks One Book Community Book Read series, the La Veta Library will be showing the highly acclaimed and emotionally charged movie, “The River”, starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek. Join us on Thursday, March 28, 2 p.m. for this moving and unforgettable film about a young farm couple who face great hardships and the ravages of nature  with determination, faith and perseverance. As always, free with refreshments.

Senior Stretch Class

WALSENBURG – Join Two Peaks Fitness on Thursdays at 4 p.m., for Senior Stretch class at the Huerfano County Community Center Conference Room, 928 Russell St. Class is FREE until we open the fitness center April 1, then free to members or pay $5 for a daily membership. NOW That’s What I Call Music Bingo with LVPL

LA VETA— Join La Veta Public Library at Mountain Merman Brewing Company, 220 S. Main for “Now That’s What I Call Music Bingo: Songs from 2011-NOW!” on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. We will play samples on shuffle from a custom “2011-NOW Songs” Playlist that match spaces on bingo cards provided. Easter Egg Hunt

WALSENBURG— Huerfano County Parks & Rec Department has partnered with Walsenburg PTO for a large community Easter Egg Hunt! Please join us Saturday, March 30, 10 a.m. at the JMHS Football Field.

4-H bake sale and egg hunt

LA VETA— The Snowy Range 4-H Bake Sale and Easter Egg Hunt will be on Saturday, March 30, 10:30 a.m. at the La Veta Town Park. The hunt will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. so come early.

Kids Carnival

WALSENBURG— Huerfano Community Bible Church located at 601 S Leon Avenue in Walsenburg is hosting a free carnival for children ages 3-12. There will be games, prizes, face painting, and much more. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March 30, from 1 – 4 p.m.

Easter Sunrise Service

WALSENBURG— New Hope Community Church, 801 Pennsylvania Avenue, Walsenburg will have its annual Easter sunrise service on Sunday, March 31, 6:15 a.m. A carry in fellowship breakfast will follow. Services at the regular time from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. will also be held.

Movie Matinee: “Spencer” at La Veta Public Library

LA VETA– Join La Veta Library for a multi-award winning and critically acclaimed movie matinee on Thursday, April 4, p.m. “Spencer” is a 2021 historical psychological drama film directed by Pablo Larraín from a screenplay by Steven Knight. The film is about Princess Diana’s existential crisis during the Christmas of 1991, as she considers divorcing Prince Charles and leaving the British royal family. Kristen Stewart and Jack Farthing star as Diana and Charles respectively, joined by Timothy Spall, Sean Harris, and Sally Hawkins.

The Worthiness Project at LVPL

LA VETA– If you know someone who experiences a sense of unworthiness, join us for The Worthiness Project, a program to inspire, uplift and remind you of your inherent value. Participants will explore an extraordinarily gentle approach to effectively realize and heal the belief in unworthiness that brings us into the direct experience of present love, innocence and joy. Join psychologist Dr. Andy Schraegle and Laura Bedford for a talk and interactive experience around how profoundly connected our conscious realization of our and everyone’s worthiness is to mental and emotional health. It is key to directly experiencing the astounding Divine Love and Light of our True, Soul Nature and its natural, flowing happiness, peace and joy. Dr. Schraegle will be joining us live via Zoom on the big screen upstairs. This event is at the La Veta Public Library, Friday, April 5 from 1 – 2:30.

Oktoberfest Chili/Soup Cook Off

LA VETA— The Oktoberfest gang is cooking up some fun and we need your help!  Our annual Chili and Soup Cook Off will be held at Skinnie’s on Saturday, April 6, 5 – 7 p.m. We are looking for the best cooks in the county to enter  their favorite red, or green chili or soup of any kind. Compete for great prizes and help us out with our scholarship fund! Entry forms are available at LaVeta Library or you may call Wendy at 719-742-5278 to get one sent out to you.

Two Peaks Grand Opening

WALSENBURG– Tivity Health/SilverSneakers is pleased to announce that they just contracted as in-network Huerfano County Center/Two Peak Fitness at 611 Main Street in Walsenburg. Your local health insurance expert David Tesitor will be co-hosting a GRAND OPENING celebration on Monday, April 8, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and  3 – 6 p.m. and will be giving away fresh produce at the event.  David will also be educating everyone on if you have Medicare you can enroll on a $0 cost Medicare Advantage Plan that will include SilverSneakers.  Any questions please call 719-738-6830.

Spanish Peaks Library  presents eclipse viewing event

WALSENBURG— On Monday, April 8, 11 a.m.  Join us at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for our community event, where we will be giving eclipse glasses to people participating in the event. Join us for lawn games, pinhole viewer craft, stomp rockets and chalk art and a whole lot of fun!

WALSENBURG– On Tuesday, April 9, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. join the conversation and learn about Green Burial. What are other options besides cremation and casketing, embalming and other “traditional” funeral choices. There are so many other things to think about. Do you want to be a tree, rock, fish or compost? Come check out what’s going on in the funeral industry and look at new options for your last wishes. Sponsored by Boies-Ortega Funeral Home, presented by Elisa Ingoldby C.S.A. and will be held in the community room at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.

Mother Jones fundraiser dinner

WALSENBURG– Tickets are on sale now for the Huerfano Democrats annual Mother Jones

Fundraising Dinner and silent auction. The event will be held on Saturday, April 20th at the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg. Colorado Secretary of State, Jena Griswold will be the guest speaker with other local and state dignitaries expected to attend. Mother Jones (a.k.a. Carolyn Newman) will also be part of the program. Trinidad Library’s March Art Wall

TRINIDAD— During the month of March, the Trinidad Public Library is excited to exhibit on its Art Wall quilts by local artist and author, Melva Nolan. Melva has titled her exhibit, “Three Storytelling Quilts.”  Pieces from the past: a collection of letters from former prisoners of war, and Pieces from the Santa Fe Trail: The story of Marion Sloan Russell journey on the Santa Fe Trail and her life told through a quilt, are both in the library’s catalog, and also available for sale from the author. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Aguilar Easter celebration

AGUILAR– Join the fun at the Aguilar Community Center on Saturday, March 30, starting at 10 a.m. There will be an Auxiliary bake sale, hot dogs, pinatas and an egg hunt at noon. The Easter Bunny will also be making a visit. Sponsored by the American Legion Post 42 and the the Friends of Aguilar.

4th Annual Trinidad Lanes

Bowling Tournament

TRINIDAD– Roar for Relay For Life is having their 4th Annual 9 Pin no Tap Tournament on Saturday, March 30, 1 p.m. at Trinidad Lanes, 823 Van Buren St. The cost is $20 per person and includes shoes. Please register and pay ahead of time by contacting Trinidad Lanes. Awards for the top 3 bowlers as well as outstanding youth. Please dress up in your favorite decades attire, awards given for top 2 in the dress up contest. Come bowl and fight back against cancer at the sametime!

Dirt Church Vol II

TRINIDAD— Join us for a hike, gravel bike ride, and/or paddle at lakeside at the west entrance to Reilly Canyon at Trinidad Lake State Park on Sunday, March 31, 9 a.m. Followed by a complimentary tasty brunch spread and beverages. Hang out as long as you like! You will need a state parks pass to attend, but is otherwise free and open for all. Trinidad Kayak Co will supply some kayaks and paddleboards, please bring your own equipment and water vessels if you can. We also recommend bringing a camp chair and/or portable table if you have one. Gravel bikes available to rent from Tarantula Cycles. Trinidad State Variety Show

TRINIDAD– Trinidad State College is excited to announce its Spring 2024 Variety Show to be held on Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at TSC All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate or simply attend. TRINIDAD— We need you on Saturday, April 6, 10:30 a.m. at The Commons Space to Create in Trinidad. History Colorado is building plans for the Trinidad History Museum and we are eager to learn from the community. Help inform and shape this vision by participating in this community conversation. Healthy Kids Running Series

TRINIDAD— Parents, please register your little runner now at our Early Bird price. Spring 2024 registration is open! We have reserved the dates at Central Park for Sunday, April 7th –  Sunday, May 5th for 5-week series will be each Sundays at 1 p.m.

Trinidad Library Solar Eclipse event

TRINIDAD– We will be seeing a solar eclipse midday on Monday, April 8th. For us, this will not be a total eclipse, if it were, there would probably be 100,000 outsiders joining us. Here the sun will be 72% covered by the moon. If you didn’t realize it was happening, you probably wouldn’t notice.

But the library is ready! Come and join us between 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.. We’ll be outside at the rear of the library watching the eclipse. We’ll be using our telescope with a special set-up to safely watch the eclipse. We’ll also be using pinhole cameras, and you can get a free pair of safety glasses that allow you to watch the eclipse without damaging your eyes.

Site Master Plan

TRINIDAD–  Join the community conversation on Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. at the Trinidad History Museum on the Historic Santa Fe Trail.  Help us shape the vision for the grounds of our beloved 100-year-old site. Join us and your neighbors to review initial landscape concepts and planned investments – such as heritage garden beds, accessible paths, water-tolerant plants, and a new horno – and provide your suggestions. Breakfast burritos and coffee will be served at this FREE community event. The public is encouraged to attend.

Reading Ranger program

RATON– On Saturday, March 30, 11 – 1 p.m. the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library will be hosting the Reading Ranger Program. They will have stories and crafts with Rangers from the Fort Union National Monument. This program is free to attend and all ages are welcome to attend.

Come learn about Palestine

RATON— The Colfax/Las Animas Forum for Peace and Justice will be hosting a talk with Rob Prince, retired Senior Lecturer on International Studies at the University of Denver’s Korbel School of International Affairs. Rob Prince will share his knowledge of the history of Palestine, the land and the present conflict. There will be a Q & A following a short lecture. The event will take place on Saturday, March 30, 4 p.m. at the El Raton Theater, 115 N 2 nd St, Raton. Refreshments will be provided by Ramel Family Farms.

Dungeons & Dragons Sundays

RATON— Every Sunday at 1 p.m. at ZIA Youth, join Niko, Alex, and their merry band of Ratonians who transform into Knights, Dwarves, and Swamp Witches for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Your Nerd Tribe is waiting for you to discover yourself among them! ZIA Youth is located at 207 Park Ave, Raton and is a safe place for 9-17 year olds to hang out after school.

RATON– The Raton Lions Club is hosting an Easter Egg hunt on Sunday, March 31, 2 p.m. at Legion Park in Raton. There will be over 500 hidden eggs and it is free for everyone to enjoy.

Art classes at Arthur Johnson

RATON— After school art classes have started at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday, 4 – 5 p.m. To reserve a spot, contact the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, or just show up to the first class.  It’s on a first come first served basis, if you did not reserve a spot.

The adult art class will be held on Saturdays, starting at 3 p.m. If you are interested please call 575-445-9711, or email the library at Library@cityofRaton.com to reserve a spot.

Brunch on mental health

RATON— Please join us for brunch on Tuesday, April 2, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Raton Convention Center Gymnasium. Come for good food and get to know some of the agencies and providers who serve Colfax County.

Community poetry reading and writing event

RATON– On Friday, April 5, 12 p.m. New Mexico Poet Laureate, Lauren Camp will be at the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton. Lauren will read a short selection of poems followed by poetry open mic. The event will conclude with a crowdsourced community poem writing exercise.

Night Sky Viewing

CAPULIN— Night sky viewing will be on Saturday, April 6, 8 p.m. at Capulin Volcano National Monument Follow the red lights from the Visitor Center to the observing area. Wear warm clothing.

Film and media networking mixer

RATON– Join the emerging film and media community in Northern New Mexico to discuss projects, learn about upcoming opportunities and network with local creatives on Sunday, April 7, 4 – 6 p.m. The mixer will take place at the Colfax Ale Cellar, 215 S. 2nd street in Raton.

Lasagna dinner for the family of Justin Hare

RATON— On Wednesday, April 10 there will be a fundraiser lasagna dinner for the family of Fallen Officer Justin Hare. The time and location is TBD but please save the date. This event is supported by the New Mexico State Police, Colfax County Rapid Response, Raton Fire Department, Colfax County Sheriff’s Department and the Raton Police Department.
