Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble Concerts

OUR WORLD— The Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble invites you to a poignant and profound Holy Week Remembrance, depicting the Passion of Christ through Scripture and Song with “IT IS FINISHED”, in three exciting venues:  Sunday, March 24, 3 p.m., in Aguilar, at the Apishapa Valley Chapel, 309 S. Romero St.; Tuesday, March 26, 2 p.m., in San Luis, at the Chapel at the Stations of the Cross.  If you wish to walk the Stations of the Cross before the musical presentation, give yourself an extra half hour; call or text 719-635-3000 for more info concerning directions and rides to San Luis, etc.; and the 3rd venue, Good Friday, March 29, 6 p.m., in conjunction with Cuchara Valley Christian Community Services, in La Veta at the La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S Main St.

Diapers and more distribution

OUR WORLD— This two day event will take place on Monday, March 25, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Las Animas County Fairgrounds, 2000 N. Linden, Trinidad and Tuesday March 26, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Ave Walsenburg. Families can receive free diaper bundles, wipes, gently used clothing, baby gear and more. All items are free. If you have donations call HULA 719-845-0463 .

Week of the Young Child

OUR WORLD— HuLA’s annual Week of the Young Child Celebration will take place on Saturday, April 6, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at Trinidad Community Center, 1309 Beshoar St, Trinidad and Sunday, April 7, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell, Walsenburg. This year’s theme is GO WILD IN THE OUTDOORS. The event is FREE. Prizes and raffles items will be given each day.

Huajatolla Heritage recipe sharing

HUERFANO— Huajatolla Heritage Foundation is pleased to be working on another cookbook featuring great recipes and stories (and more) from Huerfano County. Sandy Dolak will be at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg on Thursday March 21, 1 – 3 p.m. to collect recipes and stories for consideration for the new cookbook. She will also share some vintage cookbooks from Huerfano County and the rich legacy of good cooks! Please consider participating in this important cultural preservation project! Spring Creek Fire: Always Finding a Way to Go Forward

LA VETA— You won’t want to miss La Veta resident and friend, David Steffan, as he presents LVPL’s last segment of Two Peaks/One Book for 2024 on Thursday, March 21, 2 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room. David first met our chosen author, Shelly Read, as his Professor at Western State College. He went on to CU-Denver’s History Masters Program and served two tours of duty in the Army Corps of Engineers in Iraq. He worked as La Veta Fire Protection District’s Crew Boss, fought the Spring Fire and he is now the Burn Scar Recovery Manager. He will discuss hydrology and ecology issues, how we are recovering from the fire and how that relates to our theme of Resilience. Free with tasty refreshments.

Senior Stretch Class

WALSENBURG – Join Two Peaks Fitness on Thursdays at 4 p.m., beginning March 21 for Senior Stretch class at the Huerfano County Community Center Conference Room, 928 Russell St. Class is FREE until we open the fitness center April 1, then free to members or pay $5 for a daily membership. Free youth ski day

CUCHARA—Free youth ski day for Huerfano county students in 6th grade and up from Gardner, Walsenburg, and La Veta schools. Hosted by Panadero Ski Corporation at Cuchara Mountain Park. Friday, March 22, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Rental gear is being generously provided by The Edge in Pueblo. Thank you to all our donors who have made this event possible.

WALSENBURG— Every Friday at 5 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for their Book Dragons Book Club. To join, stop by the library or call us at 719-738-2774 to reserve a book for you.

Boomer Jukebox at FCPA- Date change

LA VETA— Time to get your 60s and 70s glad rags on and get ready for some “dancin’ in the street”. The Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir is excited to offer its winter concert: “Boomer Jukebox”—featuring a compilation of songs celebrating the 60’s and 70,s. Tickets will be $20.00 available at the door—or $21.00 online. Please join us Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30). All performances are at the theater located at 127 West Francisco in La Veta. Seating is limited, no reservations required. Any donations to help support the choir will be gleefully accepted.

Discussion on the large animal veterinarian shortage in Huerfano

WALSENBURG— Huerfano County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a discussion on the large animal veterinarian shortage in Huerfano County.  There will be professors from CSU as well as other professionals in the field providing information and leading the discussion. This will be held on Saturday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center in the meeting room.  At 9:30 there will be donuts, coffee, tea and juice provided.  The speakers will start at 10.  This is not limited to just ranchers, but also applies to anyone who cares for large animals and anyone interested can attend.  Questions?  Call John Stroh, 719-331-8859.

Ben Pollack Memorial Concert

WALSENBURG— Ben Pollack was the music teacher at John Mall Highschool for six years before he eventualy  moved on to get his master’s degree.  Under his guidance, the music program grew and flourished and won awards across the state.  Ben passed away unexpectedly at the age of 31 in December of 2023.  His friends and students are performing a concert in his memory at the new Walsenburg High School on Sat. March 23, at 5 p.m.  The concert is free, please come out and help us honor his life and his impact on our community.  Refreshments to follow.

Full moon snowshoeing

CUCHARA— Meet at the event center of the Cuchara Mountain Mercantile on Sat., March 23, 5:30 p.m. for the pot luck and full moon information. Bring something to share if you can. Snowshoeing in the park starts at 7 p.m.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Workshop

WALSENBURG— On Tuesday, March 26, 2:30 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library Archive Room there will be a free Alzheimer’s and Dementia workshop sponsored by Spark the Change Colorado’s Senior Companion Program and the Huerfano Las Animas Alzheimer’s Association. Rosemary Jaramillo, Director of Community Engagement- Alzheimer’s Association, Colorado Springs and Amanda Korth, community educator with 7+
years as a volunteer will be presenting on Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness and all the resources available through the Alzheimer’s Association for Las Animas
and Huerfano counties. Come by to see how they can best help older adults and their and families going
through this journey.

“The River” Two Peaks One Book Movie

LA VETA— In the La Veta Library’s Two Peaks One Book Community Book Read series, the La Veta Library will be showing the highly acclaimed and emotionally charged movie, “The River”, starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek. Join us on Thursday, March 28, 2 p.m. for this moving and unforgettable film about a young farm couple who face great hardships and the ravages of nature  with determination, faith and perseverance. As always, free with refreshments.

NOW That’s What I Call Music Bingo with LVPL

LA VETA— Join La Veta Public Library at Mountain Merman Brewing Company, 220 S. Main for “Now That’s What I Call Music Bingo: Songs from 2011-NOW!” on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. We will play samples on shuffle from a custom “2011-NOW Songs” Playlist that match spaces on bingo cards provided. WALSENBURG— SPLD Presents our version of Seussville; a land of Truffula Trees, ridiculous characters, silly rhymes, and much more Friday, March 29, 2 – 4 p.m. There will be snacks, drinks, games, crafts, Thing 1 and Thing 2 crowns and a special storytime from Mrs Flamingo at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.  Don’t miss this fun event!

Easter Egg Hunt

WALSENBURG— Huerfano County Parks & Rec Department has partnered with Walsenburg PTO for a large community Easter Egg Hunt! Please join us Saturday, March 30, 10 a.m. at the JMHS Football Field.

4-H Bake Sale and Egg Hunt

LA VETA— The Snowy Range 4-H Bake Sale and Easter Egg Hunt will be on Saturday, March 30, 10:30 a.m. at the La Veta Town Park. The hunt will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. so come early.

Kids Carnival

WALSENBURG— Huerfano Community Bible Church located at 601 S Leon Avenue in Walsenburg is hosting a free carnival for children ages 3-12. There will be games, prizes, face painting, and much more. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March 30, 1 – 4 p.m.

Easter Sunrise Service

WALSENBURG— New Hope Community Church, 801 Pennsylvania Avenue, Walsenburg will have its annual Easter sunrise service on Sunday, March 31, 6:15 a.m. A carry in fellowship breakfast will  follow. Services at the regular time from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. will also be held.

Children’s Church for Easter Sunday

WALSENBURG— We have some fun filled activities we are planning for Children’s Church for Easter Sunday, March 31, 10 a.m. If your looking for a church for Easter come and join us at 108 Kansas Ave, Walsenburg. We will also have a special speaker Stephen Taylor.

Oktoberfest Chili and Soup
Cookoff

LA VETA— The Oktoberfest gang is cooking up some fun and we need your help!  Our annual Chili and Soup Cookoff will be held at Skinnie’s on Saturday, April 6, 5 – 7 p.m.  We are looking for the best cooks in the county to enter  their favorite red, or green chili or soup of any kind. Compete for great prizes and help us out with our scholarship fund! Entry forms are available at LaVeta Library or you may call Wendy at 719-742-5278 to get one sent out to you.

SPLD Presents Library Eclipse Event

WALSENBURG— On Monday, April 8, 11 a.m.  Join us at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for our community event, where we will be giving eclipse glasses to people participating in the event.. Join us for lawn games, pinhole viewer craft, stomp rockets and chalk art and a whole lot of fun!

Trinidad library’s March Art Wall

TRINIDAD— During the month of March, the Trinidad Public Library is excited to exhibit on its Art Wall quilts by local artist and author, Melva Nolan. Melva has titled her exhibit, “Three Storytelling Quilts.”  Pieces from the past: a collection of letters from former prisoners of war, and Pieces from the Santa Fe Trail: The story of Marion Sloan Russell journey on the Santa Fe Trail and her life told through a quilt, are both in the library’s catalog, and also available for sale from the author. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

LAC Creative Writing Contest

TRINIDAD— Wanted, all K – 12 students for the Las Animas County Creative Writing Contest! This is open to all themes and genres, any grade as long as you’re a student in the county, home-schoolers welcome! All entries will be made available as a book with four $500 Scholarships being awarded. All work must be submitted by Friday, March 22. Seed giveaway at Cedar Street

National Historic Landmark Dedication Ceremony

The City of Trinidad will be blocking off some of the streets around the temple. You may park in one of the lots in town designated by the city, and there will be trolleys running continuously to bring you to the temple. Visitors can also park at the police station at Maple and 2nd St. and simply walk up the hill to the temple (2 blocks). Please allow some extra time for parking and making your way.

Easter Craft Fair

TRINIDAD—  Come to the Old School House Venue and Reception hall for an Easter Craft Fair featuring the Easter Bunny. Bring the kids to take pictures with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, March 23, 11 a.m. We will also have a coloring contest and Easter egg hunt.

Homeschool Co-Op
Organizational meeting

TRINIDAD— This is an initial meeting to reorganize the H.A.R.T. Homeschoolers Co-Op Group on Saturday, March 23, 1 p.m. at the Trinidad Community Center. The intention is to see what activities, lessons, field trips, etc., all parents who’s kids will be involved, are interested in getting put together for their kids. We also welcome any adult community members who are willing to volunteer to help with mini classes 30-60 min for wood working, shop, sewing, cooking classes, etc.

TRINIDAD— On Wednesday, March 27, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Trinidad State College will be hosting a Career Fair on their campus, 600 Prospect St. There will be several employers coming from near and far, you don’t want to miss this event! Dirt Church Vol II

TRINIDAD— Join us for a hike, gravel bike ride, and/or paddle at lakeside at the west entrance to Reilly Canyon at Trinidad Lake State Park on Sunday, March 31, 9 a.m. Followed by a complimentary tasty brunch spread and beverages. Hang out as long as you like! You will need a state parks pass to attend, but is otherwise free and open for all. Trinidad Kayak Co will supply some kayaks and paddleboards, please bring your own equipment and water vessels if you can. We also recommend bringing a camp chair and/or portable table if you have one. Gravel bikes available to rent from Tarantula Cycles. COLFAX

Business Task Force public meeting

RATON— The Business Task Force Committee would like to invite you to a meeting on Thurs. March 21, 5:30 p.m. at the Shuler Theater in Raton.  This committee has been meeting once a month since Nov. 2023 when they were formed after a rash of commercial burglaries hit Raton. They want to give everyone in the community an update on what the committee has been working on.
There will also be an update from Raton City Police including on their new cameras.

Angel Fire closing weekend

ANGEL FIRE— Check out all the activities and Angel Fire Resort as the ski season comes to a close. Events include dummy gelande which is like a twist on a traditional cardboard box derby, with a bigger & longer jump. After is the pond skim, where skiiers glide across a pool of water. There will also be down hill biking live music and so much more. The fun happens Saturday, March 24, lifts will be open at 9 a.m. and events start at 1 p.m.

Art classes at Arthur Johnson

RATON— After school art classes have started at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday, 4 – 5 p.m. To reserve a spot, contact the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, or just show up to the first class.  It’s on a first come first served basis, if you did not reserve a spot.
The adult art class will be held on Saturdays, starting at 3 p.m. If you are interested please call 575-445-9711, or email the library at Library@cityofRaton.com to reserve a spot.

Dungeons & Dragons Sundays

RATON— Every Sunday at 1 p.m. at ZIA Youth, join Niko, Alex, and their merry band of Ratonians who transform into Knights, Dwarves, and Swamp Witches for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Your Nerd Tribe is waiting for you to discover yourself among them! ZIA Youth is located at 207 Park Ave, Raton and is a safe place for 9-17 year olds to hang out after school.

Forrest McCurren at Arthur Johnson Library

RATON— Forrest McCurren will be performing live at the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton on Wednesday, March 27, 10 – 11:30 a.m. Join us for an hour and a half of music and storytelling. This event is free and open to all ages!

Aqua Easter Egg hunt

Come learn about Palestine

RATON— The Colfax/Las Animas Forum for Peace and Justice will be hosting a talk with Rob Prince, retired Senior Lecturer on International Studies at the University of Denver’s Korbel School of International Affairs. Rob Prince will share his knowledge of the history of Palestine, the land and the present conflict. There will be a Q & A following a short lecture.
The event will take place on Saturday, March 30, 4 p.m. at the El Raton Theater, 115 N 2 nd St, Raton. Refreshments will be provided by Ramel Family Farms.

Brunch on Mental Health

RATON— Please join us for brunch on Tuesday, April 2, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Raton Convention Center Gymnasium. Come for good food and get to know some of the agencies and providers who serve Colfax County.

Night Sky Viewing

CAPULIN— Night sky viewing will be on Saturday, April 6, 8 p.m. at Capulin Volcano National Monument Follow the red lights from the Visitor Center to the observing area. Wear warm clothing.

Lasagna Dinner for the family of Justin Hare

RATON— On Wednesday, April 10 there will be a fundraiser Lasagna Dinner for the family of Fallen Officer Justin Hare. The time and location is TBD but please save the date. This event is supported by the New Mexico State Police, Colfax County Rapid Response, Raton Fire Department, Colfax County Sheriff’s Department and the Raton Police Department.
