Torah Study

OUR WORLD— Saturday, March 4, 10 a.m. will be our March Torah Study, and we are honored to welcome Rabbi Paul Citrin for this month’s study. Many of you may know Rabbi Citrin, whose work as a congregational rabbi, interfaith leader, and writer have touched so many lives. Now retired in Albuquerque, Rabbi Citrin continues to teach at a variety of venues in New Mexico. We are grateful he will be joining us March 4 and we hope you can attend this Zoom session.
During this week prior to Purim, this Torah study will include a special reading of Deuteronomy 2:17-19, with references to Exodus 17:8-16. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend. Meeting ID: 358 411 3196, Passcode: 6wAVHq.

We approach our mission of promoting cultural equity through a variety of programs and events. Recently our activities have blossomed beyond our wildest expectations. Library at Your Door

WALSENBURG— Library at your door is a new service at the Spanish Peaks Library.  Here’s how it works: if there is a book you would like and it’s not available in our catalog, log into spld.org and go to Services, click on Library at Your Door and fill out the form.  If your request is approved, we will buy the book and Amazon will ship it directly to you.  When you have finished reading, bring the book back to the library and we will add it to our collection!  This service is available for books, large print books, DVD’s and Blu-Ray.

Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation scholarships available

HUERFANO—  The Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation is soliciting applicants for scholarships that may be available to you if you are interested in pursuing higher education in any of the biomedical or healthcare related fields.  Are you an individual earning a high school diploma or equivalent or are you an individual wanting to further your education in vocational studies, certification programs, an associates degree, or a 4-year college degree?  You can apply for a scholarship.  Applications are available from La Veta Public Library, Spanish Peaks Public Library District, your high school counselor or Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center Administration Office.  Or contact Patricia Davis at mrsdr50@gmail.com to request an application.  Application deadline is April 17, 2023, at 4 p.m.

Community Book Read event

LA VETA— The La Veta Library will again be presenting our popular spring event “2 Peaks-1 Book” a Community  Book Read. This  year we have chosen “a Man Called Ove” as our selection. This debut novel by Stockholm native Fredrick Bachman introduces us to Ove, a thoroughly grumpy older man who has staunch principals, a quick temper and who is contemplating putting an end to it all, when circumstances and life gets in the way.
Stop by LVPL for your free copy, read or reread Ove and then plan to join us in March for a book discussion, movie and events surrounding our selection. Always great fun! Be looking in the World Journal and on our website for dates and details!

Dorcas Circle Re-Opening ceremony

WALSENBURG— Join Dorcas Circle on Thursday, March 2, 10 a.m. for their Grand Re-opening Ribbon Cutting. They have made some big changes at Dorcas and are so excited to share them with the Huerfano community. Dorcas is located at 911 S. Main in Walsenburg.

Affordable health screenings

WALSENBURG— Residents living in and around Walsenburg, can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and other chronic, serious conditions with affordable screenings by Life Line Screening.  Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg will host this community event on Friday, March 3. Screenings are affordable and convenient. Care and Share mobile market

LA VETA— The La Veta Village assisted living residence partners with Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado to provide food for those in need in the greater La Veta area. We are proud to announce a new Care and Share partnership: the Mobile Market. The monthly Mobile Market provides no-cost groceries. Everyone in need in the community is welcome to shop at the market. Simply walk up and choose food you would like to take home. The first Mobile Market visit comes to the La Veta Village parking lot on East Francisco Street on Friday, March 3 from 2 – 4 p.m. At the Mobile Market, you can expect to find produce, dairy products, shelf-stable goods, and a variety of other foods for you to take home.
We also still need volunteers to help staff the Mobile Market on March 3rd. If you are interested in helping, please call (719) 247-1393 or email foodservices@lavetavillage.org. As a non-profit organization, La Veta Village depends on tax-deductible donations to support the Food Services program. Weekend movie at the Fox: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

WALSENBURG– The historic Fox Theatre’s weekend movie is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, PG-13, 2h 5m. Ant-Man and the Wasp find themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that pushes them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible. La Veta Farmers Market organization meeting

LA VETA— Join us on Saturday, March 4, at 1 p.m. for our organizational meeting for the La Veta Farmers Market 2023 Season. We will determine dates and times for the market, go over rules and regulations for the vendors and other old and new business. We will also be accepting donations to cover our insurance cost. The market is free to vendors although you will need a current town business license, $25 for the year. Returning and new vendors are encouraged to attend the meeting as well as anyone else who may just be curious. Located at the La Veta Library on the second floor.

Flamingo Story Time

WALSENBURG – Flamingo Storytime, will be held on Saturday, March 4 and every other Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.  Mrs. Flamingo will be reading a story out loud to any children (or children at heart) who would like to listen. each child who attends will receive a free book! Join us at the Walsenburg Mercantile.

FCPA Show Choir  

LA VETA— Time to get your toes tapping as the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir is excited to offer its winter concert: “Best of Broadway 2.0”—featuring a compilation of songs celebrating just the fun of music. Tickets will be $10 available at the door only. Please join us on Saturday, March 4, at 7 p.m. doors open at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 5 at 2 p.m. doors open at 1:30 p.m. All performances are at the theater located at 127 West Francisco in La Veta. Seating is limited, no reservations required, seating on a first come, first serve basis. Any donations to help support the choir will be gleefully accepted.

Eagles Ladies Auxiliary community breakfast

WALSENBURG— The Ladies Auxiliary #1187 invites the community to come join us for a breakfast on Sunday, March 5, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main St in Walsenburg. Our menu this month will be ham, hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, and green chile, with coffee or juice.  The cost will be $7 for adults and $5 for children.  Your support is always appreciated.

Tech Tuesday at SPLD

WALSENBURG— Tech Tuesday at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 1 – 2 p.m. Class will cover accounts, passwords, scams and internet safety.  Learn how to be safe online!

Mining Museum meeting

WALSENBURG— Whether you can replace a light bulb or label books, the Walsenburg Mining Museum can use your skills.  What is fun is escorting visitors around the old jail and explaining the coal mining exhibits.  If you are interested, you are invited to the next museum meeting on Tuesday, March 7, 4 p.m. at the museum, 112 W. Rural Action Project

WALSENBURG— Join us at Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg to discuss our community project to feed our local residents FRESH healthy organic produce with Emerald Dragon Food Forest. Dinner will be catered by local restaurants and a child care room will be provided for those needing child care,please RSVP in advance. All are welcome to join us the next two weeks, Tuesday, March 7, 5:30 – 8 p.m. Opening Keynote Speaker provided by CSU Office of Extension and Engagement.

Universal Preschool Sign up

American Legion Post 16 Meeting

WALSENBURG— Huerfano Post 16 of The American Legion will have their monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 8th, 6 p.m. at the Walsenburg Housing Authority Office, 220 Russell Ave. in Walsenburg. The Veterans Trust Fund (Veterans helping Veterans) is underway and you can find out more about this program at the meeting. All Veterans are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting. Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic

HUERFANO—Bergen Spay and Neuter Alliance is teaming up with Mile High Canine Rescue, Colorado Animal Rescue Express and Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare Association to bring another low cost spay and neuter clinic to Huerfano County. SPLD Flicks

WALSENBURG— SPLD Flicks at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg presents The Secret of Roan Inish, a story centered on the Irish folklore of Selkies, seals that shed their skin to become human. It is family legend that Fiona’s brother was swept away in infancy and raised by a Selkie. Join us on Friday, March 10, 1:30 p.m. we’ll have free popcorn but be sure to BYOB.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

La Veta Fishing Club Annual Meeting

First Annual Cuchara Snowshoe Race

CUCHARA— Registration is now open for our 1st Annual Snowshoe Races taking place on Saturday, March 11 at the Cuchara Mountain Park. This event features distances of 5 miles, 11 miles, 16 miles and 50k and a multiple loop course. No stress, come try it out! Cuchara averages over 250 inches of snow each season, but should conditions not be conducive to snowshoeing, we’’ host a regular ‘ol trail race. Schneider Brewery restoration/ demo project has started

TRINIDAD— As announced last September, Downtown Trinidad Development Group plans to preserve the landmark Schneider Brewery building through a selective demolition and restoration project, which began on Monday, Jan. 23. Trinidad Construction Group is the general contractor for the project. Major sections of the complex deemed structurally unsound by Sun Mountain Design Group will be removed during this process, which is estimated to last 90 days. Short-term traffic disruptions are expected. Plans for the Schneider Brewery buildings’ renewal may include a mixture of retail, residential and office spaces.
The brewery is located at 236 North Convent St.

Adult winter reading program

TRINIDAD— The Trinidad Carnegie Public Library is excited to announce the Adult Winter Reading Program, open to anyone 18 years or older. The program started on Monday, Jan. 23 rd , and runs until Friday, March 17 th . Once you register for the program, the library will be using a computer application, ReadSquared, to track your progress. You can register by visiting the library’s website, https://trinidadpubliclibrary.org. If you don’t have access to the internet, the library staff can register you and log your reading for you. On Thursday, March 2, at 6 p.m., we will be hosting a discussion of 2 books: Circe, by Madeline Miller, and The Bear, by Andrew Krivak. On Saturday, March 11th, at 1 p.m., we will be hosting a discussion of the other 2 books: When the Emperor Was Devine, by Julie Otsuka, and Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel. Both events are open to the public—you don’t have to be registered in the reading program, and you are welcome to come whether or not you read any of the books. This will be a chance to hear about some great reads, and everyone is welcome to ask questions and to join in on the discussion.

Jewel of the West- Unlocking the Archives of the Fox West Theatre

Free tutoring for PreK-8 Students in Title I Schools

COLFAX— PED announces its new tutoring service in partnership with Paper that focuses on mathematics, language arts and science. The program offers students in grades preK-8 from New Mexico Title I Schools access to free academic support from tutors on a secure platform. Participating students will receive 20 hours of tutoring at no cost to families. Parents can sign students up at OutofSchool.Tutoring@ped.nm.gov

Peer support groups

RATON— Are you struggling with addiction? Would you like to support a friend who is struggling with addiction? Join Elias Romero, a 17 year certified Peer Support Worker who will facilitate the group. Assisted by Zia Youth’s McLean at Zia Youth, 207 Park Ave, in Raton on Saturdays. 18- 30 year olds will meet from 9 – 10 a.m. and under 18 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally art competition

RATON— We want your design for this year’s logo! Raton MainStreet invites you to it’s annual Balloon Rally art work competition. Submit your design to Raton MainStreet office at 145 S. First Street, no later than Friday, March 10. Entries must include “2023 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally” and “Raton, NM”. Raton Little League Baseball season kickoff

RATON— Come out and support our youth and enjoy the fun filled day for the whole family. Join us on Sunday, March 12 at the Raton Little League/Minor Field. The pancake breakfast is from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and is $7. The Homerun derby starts at 10 a.m. and is $10 to participate. Prizes will be given out for each division. The concession stand will also be open for snacks and drinks.

Outdoor recreation input needed

RATON— As part of their statewide recreation survey, Public Land Solutions will be in Raton at Moss Adventures on Wednesday, March 15 at 5:30 p.m. to get feedback from Raton and Colfax County residents about outdoor recreation in the county and the state. There will be free food, and all ages are welcome.
