HUERFANO

Library at Your Door

WALSENBURG— Library at your door is a new service at the Spanish Peaks Library.  Here’s how it works: if there is a book you would like and it’s not available in our catalog, log into spld.org and go to Services, click on Library at Your Door and fill out the form.  If your request is approved, we will buy the book and Amazon will ship it directly to you.  When you have finished reading, bring the book back to the library and we will add it to our collection!  This service is available for books, large print books, DVD’s and Blu-Ray.

Healthcare Foundation scholarships available

HUERFANO—  The Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation is soliciting applicants for scholarships that may be available to you if you are interested in pursuing higher education in any of the biomedical or healthcare related fields.  Individuals earning a high school diploma or equivalent, or wanting to further their education in vocational studies, certification programs, an associates degree, or a 4-year college degree may apply for a scholarship.  Applications are available from La Veta and Spanish Peaks public libraries, high school counselors or Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center Administration Office.  Contact Patricia Davis at mrsdr50@gmail.com to request an application.  Deadline is April 17, 2023, at 4 p.m.

Friends of the Library book sale

WALSENBURG— Friends of the Library Book Sale for the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg is coming soon!  Clean your bookshelves and closets and donate your gently used books before the sale.  Book & Bake Sale is on Thursday, March 16 & Friday, March 17 from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

2 Peaks, 1 Book movie event

LA VETA— On Thursday, March 16, at 2 p.m.  the La Veta Library will kickoff off this year’s “2 Peaks-1 Book” community book read event with the showing of the acclaimed Swedish film “A Man Called Ove”. The film is touching, funny and enlightening and off beat. The discussion of the film and the book by the same name will be held on Thursday, March 30th.  Don’t miss out on this long standing community event!

Open House for Senior Companion Program

WALSENBURG— Join AmeriCorps Seniors and Spark the Change on Friday, March 17, 1 – 3 p.m. for an open house at the Walsenburg Housing Authority, 220 Russell Ave. Learn what it takes and how you can earn a non-taxable stipened for volunteering with the Senior Companion Program. St. Patrick’s Bingo at La Veta Mercantile for La Veta Trails

LA VETA— Friday, March 17, 4:30-6 p.m. we will serve corned beef, cabbage, bread, and stout chocolate cake catered by Alys’ Restaurant. The cost is $15 per person (including tax and tip). Small acreage workshop

WALSENBURG— The Huerfano County Small Acreage workshop will be held on Saturday, March 18, at the Huerfano County Community Center, at 928 Russell St. in Walsenburg. It will run from 8:30 in the morning until 5 p.m. that evening, with lunch provided as a break.  The workshop will be hosted by the Huerfano County Assessor’s office and the CSU extension office.
County experts and officials will give talks at scheduled times throughout the day on much-needed information, that will help citizens of Huerfano County find help or figure out who they might need to talk to, or even how to ask the right question, as they interact with the county.

Weekend movie at the Fox: 80 for Brady

WALSENBURG– The historic Fox Theatre’s weekend movie is 80 for Brady, PG – 13, 1h 38m. Inspired by the true story of four best friends living life to the fullest when they take a wild trip to the 2017 Super Bowl LI to see their hero Tom Brady play. Starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, with 7-time Super Bowl Champion and producer Tom Brady.  Showtimes are Friday 7:30 p.m., Saturday 7:30 p.m., Sunday 3 p.m. Adults $7, students $6, children (5-12) & seniors $5.

Small acreage workshop

WALSENBURG— Huerfano County Small Acreage Workshop is hosted by the Huerfano County Assessor office and the C.S.U Extention office on Saturday, March 18, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Join several different county officials including San Isabel, City of Walsenburg, Sheriff Newman at the Huerfano County Community Center for a informational day. Flamingo Story Time

WALSENBURG – Flamingo Storytime, will be held on Saturday, March 18 and every other Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.  Mrs. Flamingo will be reading a story out loud to any children (or children at heart) who would like to listen. each child who attends will receive a free book! Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds

LA VETA— Saturday, March 18, 7 p.m. at the La Veta Mercantile. Mike Clark is a singer songwriter living in Pueblo Colorado.  In 2013 to great acclaim he released the Soul and Rock and Roll album, Round and Round under the name Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds and took off playing live concerts across the Colorado front range. Now nearly ten years later is back with a highly anticipated follow up album, Moon Rock! Ben Gallagher is featured heavily on the new album playing several different types of keys and Synths.   Robin Chestnut plays drums and other percussion on Moon Rock. La Veta Writes Writing Group

LA VETA— Whether you’re a longtime writer working on a project, a casual writer, a song writer, or simply feeling to make writing a bigger part of your life, come check out La Veta Writes, a new local writing group. The next meeting is Tuesday, March 21. The group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 3 – 5 p.m. at The Parkside Art Gallery, 127 Ryus Ave. If you are looking for feedback on your writing, bring up to a maximum of two pages of writing (double-spaced, 12 pt) to share. Spanish Peaks Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting

LA VETA— Please come hear about our latest projects, mingle with local business owners, and find out how our members are working with the community, local businesses, and business groups to enhance and promote economic development in the Spanish Peaks region. El Arte De Nuestros Abuelos

Runa at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA— Thursday, March 23, 7 p.m. at the La Veta Mercantile. Runa breathes fresh life into traditional Celtic music by digging into the songs and tunes to find the universal thread that binds past to present. Oktoberfest Chili Cookoff

LA VETA— Calling all chili chefs! It’s that time of the year again when the Oktoberfest gang hosts their annual fundraising Chili Cookoff. The fun begins on Saturday, March 25, 4:30 – 7 p.m. at the Mission Deli Restaurant in La Veta.  We are looking for the best the county has to offer, so if you would like to compete for great prizes plus bragging rights, stop by the LaVeta Library and fill out an entry form for your red, green or surprise concoction. Mark your calendars for a night of food, fun and even a silent auction.

Gardening 101 with SPLD

WALSENBURG— Sunday, March 26, 1 p.m.  This month we will be discussing spring preparations.  While we have all been chomping at the bit to get out and play in our gardens, some preparations should be addressed to ensure success this summer.  Come learn the tricks of the trade in our ongoing classes at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.

Call for loan of historic La Veta photos for awards ceremony

LA VETA— The La Veta Historic Preservation Committee will be holding a Thank You Reception and Awards Ceremony in June of 2023.  This reception will be to thank our community for it’s help in preserving our valuable La Veta town character, and to present national designation plaques to our town’s five nationally recognized properties .  Refreshments will be provided and a photo display will be available for viewing.  If you have an historic photo of La Veta that you would allow us to display at this reception, we would appreciate the loan of such photos.  Please contact Terry at 303-875-0576 (phone or text), or taamalfitano@msn.com to discuss your photo and how we would receive it and return it to you.

Schneider Brewery restoration/ demo project has started

TRINIDAD— As announced last September, Downtown Trinidad Development Group plans to preserve the landmark Schneider Brewery building through a selective demolition and restoration project, which began on Monday, Jan. 23. Trinidad Construction Group is the general contractor for the project. Major sections of the complex deemed structurally unsound by Sun Mountain Design Group will be removed during this process, which is estimated to last 90 days. Short-term traffic disruptions are expected. Plans for the Schneider Brewery buildings’ renewal may include a mixture of retail, residential and office spaces.
The brewery is located at 236 North Convent St.

Cheryl Leef exhibits art at TPL’s Art Wall

TRINIDAD— Local artist Cheryl Leef grew up on a ranch in Wyoming and has spent most of her adult life in Southern Colorado. Her inspiration to paint is from the beauty of the local natural world. She works in oil paint and also in mixed media, where she uses natural objects to embellish her artwork. She is exhibiting seven works at the Trinidad Public Library during the month of March.

Made possible through a collaboration of Picketwire Media and The Commons at Space to Create. Trinidad Carnegie Public Library is providing the community with resources to encourage imagination, connection, and inspiration since 1904.

Sky watching event

TRINIDAD— The Trinidad Public Library is hosting a sky watching event on Tuesday, March 28, at 6 p.m., at the library. Astronomy professor, Zach Stockbridge is teaming up with the library to show us how to use the telescope that we check out to patrons. Then we’ll go outside and take a look at the moon. The moon will be in its first quarter that night, which is perfect for viewing. This program is open to the public of all ages.

Branson Junior Class Bingo Fundraiser

Free tutoring for PreK-8 kids

COLFAX— PED announces its new tutoring service in partnership with Paper that focuses on mathematics, language arts and science. The program offers students in grades preK-8 from New Mexico Title I Schools access to free academic support from tutors on a secure platform. Participating students will receive 20 hours of tutoring at no cost to families.

Peer support groups

RATON— Are you struggling with addiction? Would you like to support a friend who is struggling with addiction? Join Elias Romero, a 17 year certified Peer Support Worker who will facilitate the group. Assisted by Zia Youth’s McLean at Zia Youth, 207 Park Ave, in Raton on Saturdays. 18- 30 year olds will meet from 9 – 10 a.m. and under 18 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

RHS Donut Fundraiser

RATON— Raton Highschool will be having a Krispy Kream Doughnut fundraiser on Saturday, March 25, 2 p.m. until sold out. Pick up will be at the Super Save parking lot, 1265 S. 2nd St in Raton. Grab a dozen of glazed for $15 or a dozen of Chocolate for $18 and help them raise money for their trip to Italy.

Colfax County Farm & Livestock Bureau Scholarship

COLFAX— The Colfax County Farm & Livestock Bureau is pleased to offer two $750 scholarships for the 2023/2024 school year. Scholarship applicants are required to be a resident of Colfax County. They may be graduating home school or high school seniors, college undergraduate, vocational or trade school students. The applicant or their direct family do not have to be Farm Bureau members to apply, applicants that are Farm Bureau members will receive preference points.   We have made changes to the application, so please make sure that you have the 2023 application.  Applications and more information can be obtained by contacting Hal Porter at (575)-447-7108, David Walker at (575)-447-1465, or Arron Dyer at (512)-626-8497.  Deadline to apply is April 14th.
