Ensemble Concerts

OUR WORLD— The Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble invites you to a poignant and profound Holy Week Remembrance, depicting the Passion of Christ through Scripture and Song with “IT IS FINISHED”, in three exciting venues:  Sunday, March 24, 3 p.m., in Aguilar, at the Apishapa Valley Chapel, 309 S. Romero St.; Tuesday, March 26, 2 p.m., in San Luis, at the Chapel at the Stations of the Cross.  If you wish to walk the Stations of the Cross before the musical presentation, give yourself an extra half hour; call or text 719-635-3000 for more info concerning directions and rides to San Luis, etc.; and the 3rd venue, Good Friday, March 29, 6 p.m., in conjunction with Cuchara Valley Christian Community Services, in La Veta at the La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S Main St.

Diapers and more distribution

OUR WORLD— This two day event will take place on Monday, March 25, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Las Animas County Fairgrounds, 2000 N. Linden, Trinidad and Tuesday March 26, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Ave Walsenburg. Families can receive free diaper bundles, wipes, gently used clothing, baby gear and more. All items are free. If you have donations call HULA 719-845-0463 .

Friends of the Library Book Sale

WALSENBURG— Friends of the Spanish Peaks Library District is having our Book Sale, Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 415 Walsen Ave, Walsenburg.  Lots of books! Something for everyone.  Fiction, Romance, Westerns, Drama, etc.  Non-fiction English, Science, History, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Health, Religion, Self-Help. Children’s Books a great deal of Juvenile and Young Adult fiction as well.  Prices are 25¢ for children’s and young adult; , 50¢ for paperbacks, $1.00 for hardback.  Or fill a small box for $5, medium for $7.50, or large for $10.

Matinee at LVPL “The River”

LA VETA— For the 3rd program in the La Veta Library’s Two Peaks/Book Community Book Read series,  the La Veta Library will be showing the highly acclaimed and emotionally charged movie, “The River”, starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek. Join us on Thursday, March 14, 2 p.m. for this moving and unforgettable film about a young farm couple who face great hardships and the ravages of nature  with determination, faith and perseverance. Free with refreshments.

La Veta candidates’ night

LA VETA — There will be a candidates’ night for the upcoming April town elections in La Veta on Thursday, March 14, 6:30 p.m. at the La Veta Community Center.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for questions to be submitted by community members. No questions will be accepted after 6:55 p.m. A moderator will be present and the forum will begin at 7 p.m.
The candidates will be two minutes to make an introduction and then the questions will be read by the moderators. If a question is directed to a specific candidate, the candidate will be given two minutes to answer. If the question is directed to all candidates, each candidate will have two minutes to answer.
Mayor Doug Brgoch is running unopposed for another term. Trustee candidates are; Corinne Cordon, Jenny Peil, Timothy Tady and Carlton Croft.

Boomer Jukebox at FCPA

LA VETA— Wear your best 60’s and 70’s fashion and come sing-a-long with your favorite tunes as the FCPA Show Choir Presents “Boomer Jukebox” under the direction of Sam Sortore! Foundation Wine Tasting

LA VETA— Join us for our annual wine tasting event on Saturday, March 16, 5 – 8 p.m., which supports the Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation’s 501(c)3 charitable and educational mission. The event will be held at the Grandote Events Center, 5535 Co. Highway 12 in La Veta and tickets are $50 per person. Hors D’oeuvre are provided by Alys’ Restaurant. St. Patrick’s Day Bingo
for La Veta Trails

LA VETA— Join La Veta Trails on Saturday, March 16, 6- 8 p.m. for our annual St. Patrick’s Day Bingo fundraiser at the La Veta Mercantile. Bingo cards are $5 each. Water Conservancy District Board Meeting

WALSENBURG— The monthly board meeting of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District will be held at the Walsenburg Housing Authority activity room, 220 Russell St, Walsenburg, on Monday, March 18, at 6 p.m. The draft agenda for the meeting will be available on the district’s website: www.hcwcd.net .

La Veta Writes

LA VETA— Are you a longtime writer or interested in making writing or journaling a bigger part of your life and looking for kind support? We’d love to have you join us at the monthly gathering of La Veta Writes, Tuesday, March 19, 3 – 5 p.m. at The Parkside Art Gallery, 127 W Ryus Ave. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Please note, this is our last meeting at The Parkside. The April meeting will be held at the La Veta Public Library. If you would like to practice reading your work aloud, bring along 1-2 pages. Huajatolla Heritage recipe sharing

HUERFANO— Huajatolla Heritage Foundation is pleased to be working on another cookbook featuring great recipes and stories (and more) from Huerfano County. Sandy Dolak will be at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg on Thursday March 21, 1 – 3 p.m. to collect recipes and stories for consideration for the new cookbook. She will also share some vintage cookbooks from Huerfano County and the rich legacy of good cooks! Please consider participating in this important cultural preservation project! Spring Creek Fire: Always Finding a Way to Go Forward

LA VETA— You won’t want to miss La Veta resident and friend, David Steffan, as he presents LVPL’s last segment of Two Peaks/One Book for 2024 on Thursday, March 21, 2 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room. David first met our chosen author, Shelly Read, as his Professor at Western State College. He went on to CU-Denver’s History Masters Program and served two tours of duty in the Army Corps of Engineers in Iraq. He worked as La Veta Fire Protection District’s Crew Boss, fought the Spring Fire and he is now the Burn Scar Recovery Manager. He will discuss hydrology and ecology issues, how we are recovering from the fire and how that relates to our theme of Resilience. Free with tasty refreshments.

Discussion on the large animal veterinarian shortage in Huerfano

WALSENBURG— Huerfano County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a discussion on the large animal veterinarian shortage in Huerfano County.  There will be professors from CSU as well as other professionals in the field providing information and leading the discussion. This will be held on Saturday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center in the meeting room.n.  At 9:30 there will be donuts, coffee, tea and juice provided.  The speakers will start at 10.  This is not limited to just ranchers, but also applies to anyone who cares for large animals and anyone interested can attend.  Questions?  Call John Stroh, 719-331-8859.

Kids Carnival

WALSENBURG— Huerfano Community Bible Church located at 601 S Leon Avenue in Walsenburg is hosting a free carnival for children ages 3-12. There will be games, prizes, face painting, and much more. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March 30, 1 – 4 p.m.

Easter Sunrise Service

WALSENBURG— New Hope Community Church, 801 Pennsylvania Avenue, Walsenburg will have its annual Easter sunrise service on Sunday, March 31, 6:15 a.m. A carry in fellowship breakfastwill  follow. Services at the regular time from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. will also be held.

Trinidad library’s March Art Wall

TRINIDAD— During the month of March, the Trinidad Public Library is excited to exhibit on its Art Wall quilts by local artist and author, Melva Nolan. Melva has titled her exhibit, “Three Storytelling Quilts.”  Pieces from the past: a collection of letters from former prisoners of war, and Pieces from the Santa Fe Trail: The story of Marion Sloan Russell journey on the Santa Fe Trail and her life told through a quilt, are both in the library’s catalog, and also available for sale from the author. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Kids’ Night Out

TRINIDAD— Do you like dogs? Great. We do, too; in fact, we love them so much that we are writing a series of fun dog behavior handbooks for kids and their parents. Even though the books aren’t finished yet, we would like to show you what we have and see if you could give us some feedback and help us make them more family friendly. If you do, just grab your parent(s) and meet us at Mutiny in Trinidad on Thursday, March  14, 6 p.m. Let’s have fun together! All ages welcome.

Hands On History Family Day

TRINIDAD— On Sunday, March 17, 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. come to The Upswing Community Room- 419 W. Main St., next to Fox theater for the St. Patrick’s Day Irish Festival. Hosted by Trinidad Music Association and Melody Lanasgo, $10 Irish lunch. Bring an instrument and join in the jam session and sing-along.

Tour De SHIELD616

TRINIDAD— On Tuesday, March 19, 11:30 a.m.  Join Shield 616 for a “lunch to learn” with community at Nana and Nanos in Trinidad. The public is invited to come learn about Tour de SHIELD616. Tour De SHIELD616 is a bike race fundraiser to help raise money for rifle armor for officers. Chief Mike Tihonvich will be speaking. LAC Creative Writing Contest

TRINIDAD— Wanted, all K – 12 students for the Las Animas County Creative Writing Contest! This is open to all themes and genres, any grade as long as you’re a student in the county, home-schoolers welcome! All entries will be made available as a book with four $500 Scholarships being awarded. All work must be submitted by Friday, March 22. The City of Trinidad will be blocking off some of the streets around the temple. You may park in one of the lots in town designated by the city, and there will be trolleys running continuously to bring you to the temple. Visitors can also park at the police station at Maple and 2nd St. and simply walk up the hill to the temple (2 blocks). Please allow some extra time for parking and making your way.

Easter Craft Fair

Homeschool Co-Op
Organizational meeting

TRINIDAD— This is an initial meeting to reorganize the H.A.R.T. Homeschoolers Co-Op Group on Saturday, March 23, 1 p.m. at the Trinidad Community Center. The intention is to see what activities, lessons, field trips, etc., all parents who’s kids will be involved, are interested in getting put together for their kids. We also welcome any adult community members who are willing to volunteer to help with mini classes 30-60 min for wood working, shop, sewing, cooking classes, etc.

Dirt Church Vol II

TRINIDAD— Join us for a hike, gravel bike ride, and/or paddle at lakeside at the west entrance to Reilly Canyon at Trinidad Lake State Park on Sunday, March 31, 9 a.m. Followed by a complimentary tasty brunch spread and beverages. Hang out as long as you like! You will need a state parks pass to attend, but is otherwise free and open for all. Trinidad Kayak Co will supply some kayaks and paddleboards, please bring your own equipment and water vessels if you can. We also recommend bringing a camp chair and/or portable table if you have one. Gravel bikes available to rent from Tarantula Cycles. Brought to you by Tarantula Cycles, Fishers Peak Outfitters, and Trinidad Kayak Company.

Coffee and Conversations

TRINIDAD— Join us at the Bloom Mansion each first Friday of the month at 8 – 10 a.m. Come and enjoy free coffee and tea in the Bloom Mansion for conversation with your neighbors. Art classes at Arthur Johnson

RATON— After school art classes have started at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday, 4 – 5 p.m. To reserve a spot, contact the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, or just show up to the first class.  It’s on a first come first served basis, if you did not reserve a spot.
The adult art class will be held on Saturdays, starting at 3 p.m. If you are interested please call 575-445-9711, or email the library at Library@cityofRaton.com to reserve a spot.

Dungeons & Dragons Sundays

RATON— Every Sunday at 1 p.m. at ZIA Youth, join Niko, Alex, and their merry band of Ratonians who transform into Knights, Dwarves, and Swamp Witches for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Your Nerd Tribe is waiting for you to discover yourself among them! ZIA Youth is located at 207 Park Ave, Raton and is a safe place for 9-17 year olds to hang out after school.

Angel Fire closing weekend

ANGEL FIRE— Check out all the activities and Angel Fire Resort as the ski season comes to a close. Events include dummy gelande which is like a twist on a traditional cardboard box derby, with a bigger & longer jump. After is the pond skim, where skiiers glide across a pool of water. There will also be down hill biking live music and so much more. The fun happens Saturday, March 24, lifts will be open at 9 a.m. and events start at  1  p.m.

RATON— Forrest McCurren will be performing live at the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton on Wednesday, March 27, 10 – 11:30 a.m. Join us for an hour and a half of music and storytelling. This event is free and open to all ages!
