Blind Date with a Book at SPL

WALSENBURG— Spanish Peaks Library presents the return of Blind Date with a Book for the month of February!  We’ve chosen and wrapped books we think you’ll like and added a brief description.  Choose one that looks good, read it and let us know how the date went!  All “reviews” will be placed in a jar and we’ll draw at the end of the month for a prize winner.  We promise this date won’t ghost you afterwards!

Get Gub’s program

WALSENBURG— Hey kids! Reading is fun and tasty too! You can pick up a punch card from either the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg or from GubGub’s Pizza and Ice Cream. Movie matinee: “A Small Act” at La Veta Library

LA VETA— Please join us at La Veta Library as we view the award-winning documentary “A Small Act” on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. A young Kenyan’s life changes drastically when his education is sponsored by a Swedish stranger. Years later, he founds his own scholarship program to replicate the kindness he once received. Free with refreshments.

Music Bingo with La Veta Library

LA VETA— Join La Veta Public Library at Mountain Merman Brewing Company for “Now That’s What I Call Music Bingo: Love Songs!” on Thursday, Feb. 8, 6 p.m. We will play samples on shuffle from a custom “Love Songs” Playlist that match spaces on bingo cards provided. 4-H Pancake Breakfast

WALSENBURG— Join Huerfano County 4-H for their 2nd Annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 10, 8 – 11 a.m. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, coffee, hot chocolate and juice. There will also be a craft sale, superbowl squares and silent auction. Fill out a ticket at the door for a chance to win a door prize. Don’t miss the fun happening at the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg.

Winter Show opening

LA VETA— The Spanish Peaks Arts Council announces the opening of the Winter Show now on display until March 30. The exhibit includes artwork of all sizes and works in a variety of media, including photography, acrylic, oil, collage, watercolor, fabric, and repurposed materials. The opening reception is Saturday, Feb. 10, 5 – 7 p.m. Purchases made at the reception are eligible to get 20% off the listed price. The reception is open to all and there is no admission fee. The gallery is located at 132 W. Ryus in La Veta, in the Town Park. New winter hours at the SPACe Gallery are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 am – 3 pm. SPACe is a non profit organization.

Valentine’s Day Dance

WALSENBURG— Come join the Fraternal Order of Eagle’s on Saturday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m. for our annual Valentine’s Day Dance! Lot’s of snacks, finger foods, photo op area and great fun! The cost is $10 per person. We hope to see you at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main St., Walsenburg.

Beginners crochet class

WALSENBURG— The Walsenburg Craft Emporium is sponsoring a Beginners Crochet Class on Monday, Feb. 12, 1 – 3 p.m. at 609 Main St. in the Wheelhouse building. The instructor is Helen Nuce, a local crafter. She’s taught a crochet class at the Spanish Peaks District Library, and is a member of the Sassy Stitchers. The $5 class fee  includes supplies. Heart of the Matter – seminar

WALSENBURG— Please join us for a free seminar, “Heart of the Matter” given by Boies-Ortega Funeral Home funeral director, Elisa Ingoldby C.S.A, on Tuesday, Feb. 13,  11 a.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library Conference Room in Walsenburg. This free group discussion is the beginning of a series of seminars sponsored by the funeral home on “Life and Death” issues regarding “Green Burials,” “Veternan’s Death Benefits” and “Working through Grief.”

American Legion Post 16 meeting

WALSENBURG— The Brian T. Chiquette Post 16 of The American Legion will have their February monthly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Ave. in Walsenburg, please note the location change. Eleanor of Aquitaine at FCPA

LA VETA— NEW DATE! The Francisco Center for the Performing Arts, 127 W. Francisco St. is proud to have Sam Law present “The Story of Eleanor of Aquitaine: Europe’s most renowned Queen for 500 years…AND Mother of Democracy”. Open Hearts Fundraiser

LA VETA— On Saturday, Feb. 17, 4 p.m.  the Together We Dance Campaign (a collaboration with La Veta Library and La Veta Schools) will be teaming up with the La Veta Creative District and Colorado Creative Industries to host a FUNdraiser for the future La Veta Dance Studio! The Open Hearts Fundraiser will take place at Skinny’s Dance Hall, 124 N. Main St. Activities include a craft table, Youth led dancing, hula hoops, freeze dance, hokey pokey, chicken dance, limbo contest, conga line, fun activities, baked goods and more! 5:30-7:30 (or until the last person is standing) will be adults and couples dancing, another round of limbo contest and conga line, line dancing, best moves contest and even more fun! “Spamalot” musical auditions

LA VETA— This Summer’s Musical is Monty Python’s “Spamalot”! Come audition on Sunday, Feb. 18, 4 p.m. at Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Theater, 127 W. Francisco St, La Veta! La Veta Writes monthly meeting

LA VETA— Please join us whether you are a long time writer or if you simply write for your own enjoyment. We support each other, and if desired, you can read your work aloud, up to a couple of pages and always optional. Our next gathering is Tuesday, Feb. 20, 3 – 5 p.m. at The Parkside Art Gallery, 127 W Ryus in La Veta. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. This is a free gathering! Gardening with an Altitude at La Veta Public Library

LA VETA— From the birds and the bees to successes and challenges, Diane and Sam Sortore will bring you along as they reminisce about their 10 year gardening journey in La Veta. They will show classic techniques and bold new experiments in managing gardens and growing food on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2 p.m.

February Art Wall exhibit

TRINIDAD— For the month of February, local artist Cheryl Leef has returned to show six paintings. Cheryl grew up on a ranch in Wyoming and has spent most of her adult life in Southern Colorado. Her inspiration to paint is from the beauty of the local natural world. She works in oil paint and also in mixed media, where she uses natural objects to embellish her artwork. I hope you can stop by sometime this month to see her work at the Trinidad Carnegie Public Library.

Flamingo storytime in Aguilar

AGUILAR— Join Lilian the Librarian and Mrs. Flamingo on Saturday, Feb. 10, 12 p.m. for a special story time at the Aguilar Public Library. The Flamingo Book Club will offer a free kids book to each kid and their grown ups who attend storytime. The goal of the book club is to encourage a love of reading and increase access to books. Mrs. Flamingo always creates a wonderful time for kids and adults alike. You won’t want to miss this!

Dog and cat vaccine clinic

TRINIDAD— On Saturday, Feb. 17, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. bring you furry friends on over to the Trinidad Water Department Building, 222 Grey Creek Road, Trinidad for their walk-in vaccine clinic. Shots are only $5 each and nail trimming will also be available for dogs under 50 lbs. This event is hosted by PALS located at 500 West Main St, Trinidad. No appointments needed, don’t miss this amazing event that will help keep our pet population healthy.

TRINIDAD— The Red Heart Gala will be on Saturday, Feb. 17, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Mt. Carmel Wellness & Community Center.  Dinner will be served and music provided by Jeff and Sam Montoya. Call for artists for The Green Show

TRINIDAD— The Corazon Gallery will be accepting art for The Green Show on the weekend of Feb. 25, 26, 27 at 149 East Main Street in Trinidad, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. There is an entry fee of $15 each or 3 for $30. All mediums will be accepted with a size limit of 30” x 30 “  Cash prizes will be awarded. There will be a reception for the Green Show on Friday, March 1, 5 – 8 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk, at The Corazon Gallery. The green theme is very inclusive!  Anything with the color green or evoking green will be acceptable.

Ice fishing now open

EAGLE NEST— Experience the unique sport of ice fishing now at Eagle Nest Lake and Fenton Lake State Parks! The State Parks Division of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) announces that walk-in ice fishing is currently allowed on the lakes. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the ice.
For information and updates about ice conditions, contact Eagle Nest Lake State Park at (575) 377-1594 or Fenton Lake State Park at (575) 829-3630. Additional information about fishing is available on the Department of Game and Fish website wildlife.state.nm.us. The Eagle Nest Lake State Park campground is closed for the season. Fenton Lake State Park has a small selection of reservation-only camping available.

Night Sky Viewing

CAPULIN— On Saturday, Feb. 10, 6 p.m. Capulin Volcano National Monument will be hosting an evening program with night sky viewing. Follow the red lights from the Visitor Center to the observing area. Wear warm clothing. Weather dependent.

Dungeons & Drangons Sundays with ZIA Youth

RATON— Every Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at ZIA Youth, join Niko, Alex, and their merry band of Ratonians who transform into Knights, Dwarves, and Swamp Witches for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Your Nerd Tribe is waiting for you to discover yourself among them! ZIA Youth is located at 207 Park Ave, Raton and is a safe place for 9-17 year olds to hang out after school.

Art classes at AJML

RATON— After school art classes have started at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library  in Raton. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday, 4 – 5 p.m.  If interested in reserving a spot please contact the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, or you can show up to the first class it will be on a first come first served bases, if you did not reserve a spot.
The adult art class will be held on Saturdays, starting at 3 p.m. If you are interested please call 575-445-9711, or email the library at Library@cityofRaton.com to reserve a spot.

Shuter Library Mardi Gras Ball

ANGEL FIRE— On Monday, Feb. 12, 5 – 10 p.m. the Shuter Library will have its annual Mardi Gras Ball at the Angel Fire Country Club. The cost is $60 per person and includes buffet dinner, dessert, silent auction, 50/50 raffle, wine pull, photo booth, and so much more. The Leopold Writing Contest

COLFAX— For any students interested in writing, The Leopold Writing Program invites all students in grades 6th-12th to submit original essays for their 2024 writing contest. Valentine’s Sweetheart Dance

SPRINGER— Treat your parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles or any guardians to a wonderful night of dancing on Saturday, Feb. 16, 6 – 9 p.m. at Springer Miranda Gymnasium. The cost is $10 per child, adult guardians are free. The evening includes music, concessions, photo booth and ballons. The Springer P.A.C Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Dance is sure to be a great time for everyone.
