We approach our mission of promoting cultural equity through a variety of programs and events. Recently our activities have blossomed beyond our wildest expectations. Library at Your Door

WALSENBURG— Library at your door is a new service at the Spanish Peaks Library.  Here’s how it works: if there is a book you would like and it’s not available in our catalog, log into spld.org and go to Services, click on Library at Your Door and fill out the form.  If your request is approved, we will buy the book and Amazon will ship it directly to you.  When you have finished reading, bring the book back to the library and we will add it to our collection!  This service is available for books, large print books, DVD’s and Blu-Ray.

Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation scholarships available

HUERFANO—  The Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation is soliciting applicants for scholarships that may be available to you if you are interested in pursuing higher education in any of the biomedical or healthcare related fields.  Are you an individual earning a high school diploma or equivalent or are you an individual wanting to further your education in vocational studies, certification programs, an associates degree, or a 4-year college degree?  You can apply for a scholarship.  Applications are available from La Veta Public Library, Spanish Peaks Public Library District, your high school counselor or Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center Administration Office.  Or contact Patricia Davis at mrsdr50@gmail.com to request an application.  Application deadline is April 17, 2023, at 4 p.m.

Community Book Read event

LA VETA— The La Veta Library will again be presenting our popular spring event “2 Peaks-1 Book” a Community  Book Read. This  year we have chosen “a Man Called Ove” as our selection. This debut novel by Stockholm native Fredrick Bachman introduces us to Ove, a thoroughly grumpy older man who has staunch principals, a quick temper and who is contemplating putting an end to it all, when circumstances and life gets in the way.
Stop by LVPL for your free copy, read or reread Ove and then plan to join us in March for a book discussion, movie and events surrounding our selection. Always great fun! Be looking in the World Journal and on our website for dates and details!

El Arte De Nuestros Abuelos

WALSENBURG— The monthly art class will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, 1 – 3 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Main Street Clean up day with De-Trash Walsenburg-UPDATED

WALSENBURG— Join forces with the De-Trash Group and our local businesses to help keep Walsenburg looking its best! Twice a month, we’ll be picking up litter and every volunteer gets a coupon for their efforts. Do you know any students that still need volunteer hours? Send them our way and we can get them started! Meet us on Friday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. at the future home of Gub Gub’s Pizza at 7th and Main in Walsenburg. Coupons will be handed out for Gub Gub’s Pizza and Ice Cream, Regalburg Deli and Crafty Canary Brewery.

LVPL Music Bingo night

LA VETA— Friday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m. join La Veta Public Library at Mountain Merman Brewing Company for “Now That’s What I Call Music Bingo: One-Hit Wonders!” We will play samples from a custom “One-Hit Wonder” playlist that match spaces on bingo cards provided. We will not announce the name of the song, you must know the song to cover the space. There is no charge to participate. All play is individual. See you at the brewery!

Weekend movie at the Fox: Avatar: The Way of Water

WALSENBURG– The historic Fox Theatre’s weekend movie is Avatar: The Way of Water, PG-13, 3h 12m. Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans. Showtimes are Friday 7:30 p.m., Saturday 7:30 p.m., Sunday 3 p.m. Adults $7, students $6, children (5-12) & seniors $5.

Relieve stress with essential oils

WALSENBURG— How to Relieve Stress with Essential Oils will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.  at the Walsenburg Mercantile. This class is to teach you how you can relieve stress with essential oils, how they work, and why they are effective for all ages. All attendees that remain for the 45 min class are given a FREE essential oil from Chae Organics.

Sculpture Exhibit opening – MoF

WALSENBURG— Jeff Madeen’s Parlor Tricks and Other Games of Chance Sculpture Exhibit opening at the Museum of Friends in Walsenburg, Saturday Feb. 25, 5 – 7 p.m., light refreshments will be served, and with the artist in attendance. Please join us to celebrate the sculptural works in a one-person exhibit.  The works on view represent a vast range of variety and methods of steel sculpture fabrication. Martin Gilmore Trio at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA— The Martin Gilmore Trio (MG3) is a bluegrass and folk music group from Denver, Colorado. Comprised of Martin Gilmore, Nick Amodeo, and Ian Haegele, their sound centers around acoustic bluegrass and folk music, but they stray into jazz, swing, country and blues. Live Music & Art at The Parkside

LA VETA— Sunday, Feb, 26 12:30 – 2 p.m. Come join us for Sunday Live Music at The Parkside Art Gallery and Café, set against the warm backdrop of local art while enjoying a little snack, a soft drink or one of Anneke’s signature coffees, teas and hot chocolate.  Michael Steward, renowned Pianist, will be playing your favorite music, whether it is jazz, rhythm & blues, big band, country, blues or pop. Story time at SPLD

WALSENBURG— Storytime for Babies and Toddlers and Storytime for Kids are ongoing programs at the Spanish Peaks Library.  Toddler Storytime is on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and Storytime for Kids is at 10:30 a.m. on Fridays.  Join our children’s librarian for an exciting adventure into the world of books.

Free tax preparation

HUERFANO – Another Life Foundation partners with the IRS to offer FREE income tax preparation to eligible community members. We are excited to be extending our IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) tax services to Huerfano County this tax season!  If you make $58k or less, visit one of the FREE IRS VITA Tax Sites that will be held at the local libraries. Accepting Walk-ins every Monday, 3 – 6 p.m. at the La Veta Public Library and every Wednesday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg. Water Conservancy Dist. meeting

WALSENBURG— The monthly board meeting of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District will be held in person at the Walsenburg Housing Authority activity room, 220 Russell St, Walsenburg, on Monday, Feb. 27, 6 p.m. The draft agenda for the meeting can be found on the district’s website: www.hcwcd.net.

Rural Action Project

WALSENBURG— Join us at Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg to discuss our community project to feed our local residents FRESH healthy organic produce with Emerald Dragon Food Forest. Dinner will be catered by local restaurants and a child care room will be provided for those needing child care,please RSVP in advance. All are welcome to join us the next two weeks, Tuesday, Feb. 28  5:30 – 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Feb. 28 and Tuesday, March 7. Opening Keynote Speaker provided by CSU Office of Extension and Engagement.

Community members needed for Head Start Literacy week

WALSENBURG— On behalf of CDI South Central Colorado Head Start, we would like to invite you to our Spring Literacy Event that will be held the week of March 6th – 10th. We are looking for community members to share their passion of reading with our preschool students. If you are available between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and would like to read to our preschoolers please contact us by March 1st. Affordable health screenings

WALSENBURG— Residents living in and around Walsenburg, can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and other chronic, serious conditions with affordable screenings by Life Line Screening.  Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg will host this community event on Friday, March 3. Screenings are affordable and convenient. Care and Share mobile market

LA VETA— The La Veta Village assisted living residence partners with Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado to provide food for those in need in the greater La Veta area. We are proud to announce a new Care and Share partnership: the Mobile Market. The monthly Mobile Market provides no-cost groceries. Everyone in need in the community is welcome to shop at the market. Simply walk up and choose food you would like to take home. The first Mobile Market visit comes to the La Veta Village parking lot on East Francisco Street on Friday, March 3 from 2 – 4 p.m. At the Mobile Market, you can expect to find produce, dairy products, shelf-stable goods, and a variety of other foods for you to take home.
We also still need volunteers to help staff the Mobile Market on March 3rd. If you are interested in helping, please call (719) 247-1393 or email foodservices@lavetavillage.org. As a non-profit organization, La Veta Village depends on tax-deductible donations to support the Food Services program. Flamingo Story Time

WALSENBURG – Flamingo Storytime, will be held on Saturday, March 4 and every other Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.  Mrs. Flamingo will be reading a story out loud to any children (or children at heart) who would like to listen. each child who attends will receive a free book! Join us at the Walsenburg Mercantile.

FCPA Show Choir                

LA VETA— Time to get your toes tapping as the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir is excited to offer its winter concert: “Best of Broadway 2.0”—featuring a compilation of songs celebrating just the fun of music. Tickets will be $10 available at the door only. Please join us on Saturday, March 4, at 7 p.m. doors open at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 5 at 2 p.m. doors open at 1:30 p.m. All performances are at the theater located at 127 West Francisco in La Veta. Seating is limited, no reservations required, seating on a first come, first serve basis. Any donations to help support the choir will be gleefully accepted.

Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic

HUERFANO—Bergen Spay and Neuter Alliance is teaming up with Mile High Canine Rescue, Colorado Animal Rescue Express and Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare Association to bring another low cost spay and neuter clinic to Huerfano County. Schneider Brewery restoration/ demo project has started

TRINIDAD— As announced last September, Downtown Trinidad Development Group plans to preserve the landmark Schneider Brewery building through a selective demolition and restoration project, which began on Monday, Jan. 23. Trinidad Construction Group is the general contractor for the project. Major sections of the complex deemed structurally unsound by Sun Mountain Design Group will be removed during this process, which is estimated to last 90 days. Short-term traffic disruptions are expected. Plans for the Schneider Brewery buildings’ renewal may include a mixture of retail, residential and office spaces.
The brewery is located at 236 North Convent St.

4th Annual Trinidad Polar Plunge

Jewel of the West- Unlocking the Archives of the Fox West Theatre

TRINIDAD— Join us at AR Mitchell Museum, 150 E Main St on Friday, March 3, 5 – 8 p.m. for a fun evening exploring local history. The curated collection of memorabilia and artifacts shows the important role that the theatre has played in the community throughout its 115-year history and invites a bit of nostalgia. Free tutoring for PreK-8 Students in Title I Schools

COLFAX— PED announces its new tutoring service in partnership with Paper that focuses on mathematics, language arts and science. The program offers students in grades preK-8 from New Mexico Title I Schools access to free academic support from tutors on a secure platform. Participating students will receive 20 hours of tutoring at no cost to families. Parents can sign students up at OutofSchool.Tutoring@ped.nm.gov

How to be a More Effective Board Member training

SPRINGER— Board members typically work hard to be productive and efficient in serving their organizations. An excellent board member will strive to make good decisions in a timely manner. Therefore, the Springer Chamber of Commerce is hosting a meeting providing information on how to be a more effective board member.
Presenting information and guiding the discussion is Melyn Johnson, the Main Street Director of Guymon (Okla.) Johnson, named the 2022 Oklahoma Main Street Director of the Year, has 30 years of experience working with different boards. Prior to being the Main Street Director. She plans to address different types of organizations and boards, discuss by-laws, ethics, committees, annual calendars, annual meetings, events and programs, funding, and volunteer development.
The presentation on boards is to be held on Friday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. in Room 107 of Luna College, Springer Campus. The cost of the class is $15 per person and includes supper. Please email springerchamberofcommerce@hotmail.com to

Peer support groups

RATON— Are you struggling with addiction? Would you like to support a friend who is struggling with addiction? Join Elias Romero, a 17 year certified Peer Support Worker who will facilitate the group. Assisted by Zia Youth’s McLean at Zia Youth, 207 Park Ave, in Raton on Saturdays. 18- 30 year olds will meet from 9 – 10 a.m. and under 18 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally art competition

RATON— We want your design for this year’s logo! Raton MainStreet invites you to it’s annual Balloon Rally art work competition. Submit your design to Raton MainStreet office at 145 S.
