Free EQIT course offered
January 2023

OUR WORLD— Beginning Monday, Jan. 9, the Huerfano-Las Animas (HuLA) Counties Early Childhood Advisory Council, Trinidad State Jr. College (TSJC) and Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), offer a no-cost professional development opportunity to the bi-county region. Expanding Quality in Infant Toddler Care (EQIT) Program is a FREE 16 week course offered to early childcare professionals, parent(s) and grandparents. This 3-hour course will be held on Monday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m. at the SCCOG Early Learning Center, 1225 Rosita Ave, Trinidad for 16 weeks. In addition to course work, it is recommended for students to
receive at least two hours of coaching related to the course modules. In addition to the 48 hour direct class time, each participate will be offered mentoring or coaching to enhance their knowledge of the EQIT program and their skills. Attendance is mandatory for completion of the program. Individuals completing the EQIT program will be awarded a certificate of completion; from the Colorado Department of Early Childhood. The EQIT program is a partial fulfillment of Colorado State licensing education requirements specific to Early Childhood Teacher, Center Teacher, Center Director and Family Child Care licenses. Veterans Helping Veterans

HUERFANO  – The American Legion Post 16 has in place a program, Veterans Helping Veterans, with funds that are available to help Huerfano County Veterans with emergency expenses. Permitted uses of the funds include rent/housing, utility, food/gas, mental health therapy, car care/repair and other emergency expenses as deemed appropriate. There are limits to the amount and number of times assistance can be given. Proof of veteran status is required to receive assistance with these funds. Diaper Bundle and gently used clothing distribution day rescheduled to Dec. 29

WALSENBURG— The HuLA Early Childhood Council is hosting  free diaper bundle and gently used clothing distribution event in Huerfano County scheduled for today, Dec 22 has been rescheduled due to the weather.  It will now be held on Thursday, Dec. 29 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center. Trauma Informed Yoga

WALSENBURG— Trauma Informed Yoga is a loose low impact form of stretches that incorporate grounding, security and embodiment. Ruth Heal (yoga instructor) co-facilitates with Travis Maes (Peer Recovery Specialist) invite anyone  that would like to attend free of charge, every Thursday from 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. at The Crossroads Turning Points building at 615 Russell Ave. Walsenburg. A community holiday concert with Willson and McKee

LA VETA— Thursday, Dec. 29, 7 p.m. at La Veta Mercantile. This free concert is a gift to the community, sponsored by Main Street Events, LLC. Willson and McKee (Ken Willson, Kim McKee) are local musicians who have been playing music for over 30 years.  They play a variety of instruments including the harp, banjo, guitar, and mountain dulcimer on which Kim has won national championships.  They will be playing seasonal as well as Celtic music.  We hope many people of all ages come out to enjoy the music and storytelling. Sparkling La Veta- community clean up days

LA VETA— Join in Sparkling La Veta! Ah! We all know the feeling of a clean home! Embark in gentle silence or in joyful conversation as we walk. There are two choices for this weekend’s the Sparkling La Veta Community Litter Pickups: Friday, Dec. 30 and/or Saturday, Dec. 31 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. As we walk, if we like, we can send out gratitude and peaceful, joyful vibrations to the world. Meet outside the La Veta Public Library. Bring one or two bags to pick up litter and gloves to keep your hands tidy. (The second bag could be for recyclables, but one bag is fine too!)

Lathrop State Park first day hike

WALSENBURG— Join Lathrop State Park and La Veta Trails for a dog-friendly first day hike of the Cuerno Verde Trail. Bring your family and friends to ring in the New Year on Sunday, Jan. 1, 10 a.m. Hot chocolate and a snack following the hike. Or, lemonade and cookies if it’s a warm January day. Celebrate Recovery

WALSENBURG— Celebrate Recovery is a biblical and balanced program that helps overcome hurts, habits and hang-ups of all sorts and shapes. People familiar with Alcoholics Anonymous and other recovery groups will recognize the format. Celebrate Recovery acknowledges God’s healing power in our lives through the 12 Steps and 8 Recovery Principles that facilitate true life transformation. If you wish to attend, you don’t need to be a Christian or a member of Praise. There’s no pre-registration or sign-ups & no need to bring anything except a willingness to grow & change. Positive changes at the La Veta Library

Trivia hosted by La Veta Library

LA VETA— Join the La Veta Public Library at the Mountain Merman Brewery for our next Trivia Night on Friday, Jan. 13, 7 p.m. 5 rounds, 5 questions each round, up to 5 people on each team. No electronic devices allowed-this will result in immediate team disqualification. There is no charge to participate in trivia. “Footlight Frenzy” auditions

TRINIDAD— Main Street Live Director, Lora Nava, is holding auditions for our first 2023 play, “Footlight Frenzy”. The play requires 2 females and 4 males.
