SPLD and GubGub’s Presents the Get Gub’s program

WALSENBURG— Hey kids! Reading is fun and tasty too! You can pick up a punch card from either the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg or from GubGub’s Pizza and Ice Cream. Sassy Stitchers at SPLD

WALSENBURG— Experienced and novice stitchers alike are invited. Come join this fun-loving and creative bunch of Sassy Stitchers every Thursday, 2 – 4 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.

Spanish Peaks Christmas Bird Count

LA VETA— The Arkansas Valley Audubon Society is please to sponsor the Spanish Peaks Christmas Bird Count on Friday, Dec. 29, 8 a.m. We will meet at the La Veta Town Park and bird in the morning until about noon when we will meet in Town at a local home for lunch and refreshments, bring your own sack lunch.   Intrepid birders will continue in the afternoon.   With the group will be experienced birders to help beginners in identifying the dozens of species expected to be seen.
The Spanish Peaks count has been going on for more than 30 years.
Participants need not be experienced – experts will be present.   More eyes looking about is always welcomed.  Bring binoculars if you have them, dress warmly even though vehicles will be nearby.   For questions call Tom at 742-3776 or  Polly at 742-3657.
Also, if you feed birds in your back yard, let us know what you are seeing.  The more the merrier

Trivia with LVPL

LA VETA— Join La Veta Public Library at Mountain Merman Brewing Company for a night of You Can’t Study Trivia on Friday, Dec. 29,  6 p.m. Up to FIVE (5) people on a team. Night out at the Eagles

WALSENBURG— The Fraternal Order of the Eagles #1187 invites the community out to celebrate the end of the year. Join the fun on Friday, Dec. 29, doors open at 7 p.m. the cost per person is $10, with a local DJ preforming all night. Come and join us for an evening of socializing and fun.

Silent auction of John Mall High School related items on Tuesday

WALSENBURG— Huerfano Re-1 School District would like to invite the public for a silent auction of many items currently in the Walsenburg Jr. Sr. HS (John Mall HS) that will not be moved to the new 7 – 12 building set to open on January 15, 2024. Check out the silent auction on Tuesday, Jan, 2, 2024, 8 – 11 a.m. and an open house at 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. (first come-first served)
Items to be sold include, but are not limited to: desks, chairs, tables, cabinets, filing cabinets, office supplies, kitchen equipment, athletic equipment, old uniforms, cleaning supplies, and a variety of other miscellaneous school items.

SPLD presents Family Fun Hour

WALSENBURG— Check out the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. for an hour of family fun. Bring the whole family and make a New Year’s Treasure Box!  We will be painting boxes to keep all your treasures in from memories made in 2024.  Don’t miss this fun family project!

SPLD presents Teen Pizza

WALSENBURG— Every Wednesday, from 4 – 6 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for PIZZA, provided by GubGub’s Pizza and Ice Cream! Teens are welcome to come hang with us after school every Wednesday, no catch, no demands just stop by and check out our library. We have Wii, computers, tablets, games, pizza and fun!

First Friday at Honeypot

WALSENBURG— Every first Friday of the month Honeypot Warehouse, 111 W 10th St., Walsenburg  will be hosting a free pilates and yoga combo class. Stay after for snacks, refreshments and a pop-up athletic wear shop. Check out this month’s free class on Friday, Jan. 5, 6:30 p.m.

Water Conservancy District Budget Approval and Meeting

LA VETA— The Huerfano County Water Conservancy District has set a special meeting for 2024 budget review and approval. This meeting will be Monday, Jan. 8, 12 p.m. at the La Veta Municipal Building, 204 South Main Street, La Veta. Other urgent business may be conducted as determined by the board of directors during this special meeting. The draft agenda for the special meeting will be available on the district’s website: www.hcwcd.net .

Walsenburg Jr. Sr. High ribbon cutting to be January 15

WALSENBURG— On Monday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m. join the Walsenburg Jr. Sr. High School for their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for their new school, right next to the old school. A tour of the building will follow between 10:40 – 11:40 a.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to check out the new school and celebrate with the community.

“Welcome to Colorado” Trinidad Public Library Art Wall

TRINIDAD— Local artist Sheigla Hartman presents an exhibit she calls, “Welcome to Colorado”, now on view at the Trinidad Public Library’s Art Wall. Sheigla has shown her artwork at the library numerous times. December’s exhibit includes watercolors and watercolor collages, and pages from a sketchbook she created while in London. Sheigla began her formal studies in 1964, and during her long career has exhibited in prestigious institutions in London, Paris, Madrid and the United States. Her exhibit will be on display for the entire month of December.

Cup of Joe Peer to Peer Program

TRINIDAD— Every second and forth Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. Veterans are invited to Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center, 127 N. Commercial Street Suite 205 for a fresh cup of coffee. Diggin’ The New Year- Trail building workshop

TRINIDAD— Join us on Saturday, Dec. 30, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. stay for the whole day or just the morning session. Either way, don’t miss this chance to meet trails guru Tony Boone and bone up on trail skills in preparation for projects in 2024. We’ll cover design concepts, sustainable construction, and maintenance basics…with tools in hand!
Plus, you’ll be part of building the next trail section at Wormhole, a family-friendly skills loop close to the parking lot. Dress for the weather and bring gloves and water. And if it’s too snowy/muddy/cold, we’ll reschedule in 2024.

First Day Hike

TRINIDAD— On Monday, Jan 1, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. come join the Friends of Fishers Peak and Trinidad Lake State Parks and hike the Osita Point Trail – 8 miles
round trip. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available. This is a A Smithsonian Companion Event.

Legacies of Western Women

TRINIDAD— More than a Place Colorado, Women, and Land, a Smithsonian Companion Event will be on Friday, Jan. 5, 5 – 8 p.m. at the Trinidad History Museum on the Historic Santa Fe Trail, 120 S. Chestnut. The Center for Colorado Women’s History examines the legacies of Western women, their role, an event your certainly don’t want to miss.

Winter tree care

TRINIDAD— The City of Trinidad Urban Forestry Board will hold a free class on winter tree care on Monday, Jan. 8, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Commons at Space to Create, 218 W. Main Street . The class will be led by UFB board member, Keythur Merchant.

New Years Day Polar Plunge

EAGLE NEST— Hearty souls are invited to the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge at Eagle Nest Lake State Park. Everyone is welcome to this annual event weather they are plunging, stomping or spectating. Complimentary hot chocolate and cookies for participants and spectators and a free shirt for the first 90 plungees. A Day of Ice Fishing

EAGLE NEST— This is a family-focused Ice Fishing Event on Saturday, Jan. 20, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Eagle Nest Lake State Park.  They will provide the gear, guides, food, and warm drinks. Open Pinewood Derby Race

CIMARRON— Everyone come out and support Pack 68 by entering the open pinewood derby race on Sunday, Jan 21, 5 – 8 p.m. All cars, past and present are welcome to enter! If you were a cub scout and still have your cars, unpack them, dust them off and bring them to the race at Parish Hall!
