Kringle Market- Win $1,000 and see Santa on Dec. 17

OUR WORLD— The  ‘Tis the Season’ season is almost here! Join us at the Walsenburg Mercantile, 408 Russell St. on Saturday, Dec. 17 for all your holiday shopping needs. For the second year in a row, the World Journal is teaming up with merchants from Huerfano, Las Animas, and Colfax counties to give away $1,000.  Support over 70 local vendors, get in the festive spirit, hang out with Santa Claus himself,  and finish up all your holiday shopping.
The $1,000 drawing will be at 2 p.m. on Dec. 17. You must be present to win.
You can enter the drawing by shopping at La Veta Mercantile, Rocky Mountain Trading Company in Trinidad, Robin’s Boutique in Trinidad, the Grandote Golf Course restaurants – The Peaks at Grandote and the Grandote Grill, La Veta Inn, Lokal Burger in La Veta and the Walsenburg Mercantile. Kringle Market vendors wanted

OUR WORLD — We are still looking for local vendors and crafters to participate in the market on December 17.  There is a $10 booth fee and you will join over 80 vendors who will be there when the $1,000 cash is given away at 2 pm.  For more information about having your own booth including, set up and tear down times, please email Judy at mercantilewalsenburg@gmail.com.

SPBA Holiday Giving Celebration extended

HUERFANO— As everyone is immersed in the hubbub of the holidays, we are sad to report that donations have been slow, so we are extending the giving window through this week to provide more time to give and spread the word!
Donations can be made at spba.huerfano.org.  All donations are 100% tax-deductible as a charitable donation or can be used as a marketing/advertising expense which is also tax-deductible. All donations will help our community tremendously.

Veterans Helping Veterans

HUERFANO  – The American Legion Post 16 has in place a program, Veterans Helping Veterans, with funds that are available to help Huerfano County Veterans with emergency expenses. Permitted uses of the funds include rent/housing, utility, food/gas, mental health therapy, car care/repair and other emergency expenses as deemed appropriate. There are limits to the amount and number of times assistance can be given. Proof of veteran status is required to receive assistance with these funds. Friends of the Library Book Sale

WALSENBURG— Friends of the Library Book and Bake Sale, Thursday, Dec 15 and Friday, Dec 16, 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Join us at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for our quarterly Book Sale, including a bake sale for December!  Mystery, Suspense, Horror, Gardening, Cooking, Westerns, whatever your fancy, we probably have something to spark your interest.

Christmas Crafting

WALSENBURG— Join us for free Christmas crafting on Thursday, Dec. 15, 1 p.m. at the Walsenburg Housing Authority. This will be the last gathering of El Arte de Nuestros Abuelos for 2022. We will be painting a cute 3-D wooden Christmas cut-out with Sandy Johnston. Please bring a dozen cookies for our cookie exchange. Mistletoe Bingo Fundraiser at The Peaks at Grandote

LA VETA— Thursday, Dec. 15, 5 – 8 p.m. This is a fundraiser to benefit La Veta Trails and wish Jeffer Wingate of the U.S. Forest Service La Veta Office a happy retirement.  Corrine Cordon, the new owner of Grandote Golf Course, and The Peaks at Grandote restaurant, is hosting a buffet dinner at $25, which includes tax and tip with one complimentary bingo card included. El Arte de Nuestros Abuelos at Walsenburg Housing Authority

WALSENBURG— Join us for the last gathering of the 2022 El Arte de Nuestros Abuelos at the Walsenburg Housing Authority on Thursday, Dec. 15, 1 p.m.  Sandy Johnston will share her skills with everyone in painting a cute little 3-D wooden Christmas cut-out. Huerfano Fair Board Meeting

HUERFANO— The Huerfano County 4-H Fair Board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15, 6 p.m., at the Huerfano County Fairgrounds located at 401 Moore Street, La Veta, to fill a board seat vacancy.  You must be present to run for the position.

Weekend movies at the FOX

WALSENBURG— The historic Fox Theatre’s weekend movie is Avatar: The Way of Water (PG-13) Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their home. Gingerbread Bash!

WALSENBURG— Saturday, Dec. 17, 2:30 p.m. “Gingerbread Bash” is a super fun, hands-on way for the whole family to celebrate the Christmas season together! We’ll make a gingerbread nativity, play games, hear the Christmas story from the Bible, and discover that sometimes the greatest gift comes in the most ordinary box. Santa will be there, too, with a gift for every child! There’ll also be a special place where kids can pick a gift to give to someone else, and even wrap it! La Veta Holiday Blessing: A Bell Ringing Procession

LA VETA— Wednesday, Dec. 21, 4:30 p.m. The sound of a bell welcomes peace, happiness and wisdom. We will meet at the La Veta Town Park pavilion to start the procession around town. At the end, we’ll gather ’round the fire outside The Mountain Merman Brewery on Main for hot chocolate and cookies. If you like, wear festive or vintage clothing. Come celebrate miracles. Holiday movies at La Veta Library

LA VETA— On Thursday, Dec. 22, 2 p.m., come to a holiday movie screening at La Veta Library  for some holiday family fun! Those in attendance will choose which  holiday classic they’d like to see. Get into the spirit and wear your Christmas pjs and have the kids bring their pillow and blanket! Refreshments  served!

Christmas sing-a-long at MSL

TRINIDAD— There will be a Christmas sing-a-long with the Trinidad Music Association on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at Main Street Live.

Holiday Craft Fair in the Bloom Mansion

TRINIDAD—  Enjoy the holifays at the Trinidad History Museum.  There will be a holiday craft fair in the Bloom Mansion, plus arts and crafts making  – $5/person includes all supplies on Saturday, Dec. 17th –9 – 2 p.m.
Tea parties will be held at 2 p.m. at the Bloom on December 17 and 23rd.  $10 per person.
Finally, there will be a winter break camp for studentss  in first through 8th grade.  HTese day camps will run Dec. 19 through 323rd, and re $25 per day, or $100 for the week .  Scholarship tuition assistance is available.

Shop Local Shop Small

TRINIDAD— Trinidad and Las Animas County Chamber of Commerce presents Shop Local Shop Small.  Now through  Saturday, Dec. 24, participating businesses will be giving out tokens to costumers when they spend $25 or more on a given transaction. Home Lighting Tours

TRINIDAD— The city of Trinidad and the Tourism Board will be hosting the Annual Home Lighting Tours aboard the Trolley every Thrusday – Sunday now through Dec. 23. Tours are at 5:30  and 7 p.m.   Trolley pick up is at 234 N. Commercial St. in front of Frank Images. The Tourism Trailer also will be on site to hand out free hot cocoa and hot apple cider and gift bags for the kiddos.

Family Literacy Night

TRINIDAD— Family Literacy Night at Carnegie Public Library, come to the library to explore, learn, and make something together on Friday Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m. All attendees will have the chance to enter to win a door prize. Snacks will be provided.

Las Posadas

TRINIDAD— Las Animas County Hispanic Chamber and Southern Colorado Coal Miner’s Museum will be hosting Las Posadas on Friday, Dec. 16, 5:30 p.m. beginning at the Coal Miners Museum, 219 W. Main St.,  Las Posadas is a celebration that represents the difficulties that Joseph and Mary, the mother of Jesus, faced in search of a room when traveling to Bethlehem.
Groups of children and adults go from house to house singing traditional songs requesting lodging (posada). We will have live music and go to different businesses on Main Street and Commercial St. ending back at the museum. We welcome anyone who would like to be a part of Las Posadas either by dressing up or as part of the procession. We would love for you to join us! Club Q Benefit & Drag Show

TRINIDAD— We are deeply saddened by the senseless tragedy at Club Q in Colorado Springs. While we cannot change what happened, we can offer support and love through the benefit concert on Friday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. at The Well Hotel & Taproom, proudly presented by the LGBTQIA+ Community of Trinidad, Colorado. Please join us for a night of LIVE music by local musicians, drag shows featuring Club Q Colorado Springs performers, food, drinks, raffles and a Silent Auction. The $5 cover and all other
proceeds go directly to the victims & families. LBGTQIA+ of Trinidad provides a safe space for all community members and prides itself on creating understanding, acceptance and love right here in Trinidad, Colorado! The Well will donate every dollar spent on food or drink to the victims and families.

Photos with Santa

TRINIDAD— Photos with Santa to benefit the Trinidad Art Fest. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Santa will be ready for you, the kids and your pets to the Well Hotel & Tap Room, 155 E Main Street in Trinidad. Pictures start at $10 and all proceed go to Trinidad Art Festival. There will be live music by Jace Baribeau and the photography is donated by Sonder Colorado.

Aguilar Parade of Lights

AGUILAR— Saturday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. the Town of Aguilar will have their annual Parade of Lights.  Everyone is encouraged to get their entry ready for this fun event.  Line up at the Navajo Service Station at Main & Fir St. by 6 p.m.   The parade will be led by Santa & Mrs. Santa, go west on Main St. as usual, turn around  and go east for a second look!   Santa will then be available at the Aguilar Community Center for visits & photos with children of all ages.   They will receive Christmas candy and a gift bag. Pictures with Santa

TRINIDAD— On Sunday, Dec. 18, 1 – 3 p.m. the Las Animas County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be hosting Pictures with Santa. Santa will be at the Southern Colorado Coal Miners Museum for pictures for all the good boys and girls. This is a free event but donations are always much appreciated. Please bring your own phone or camera. We will also have hot chocolate and goodies for sale.

RATON— Santa Fe Trail School for the Performing Arts presents Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol at the Historic Shuler Theater. Tickets are $10 unless you come in period costume, then $5. Audubon’s 123rd Annual Christmas Bird Count

RATON—The National Audubon Society invites birdwatchers to participate in the longest-running community science survey, the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC). On Saturday, Dec. 17, volunteer birders and nature enthusiasts in Raton will take part in this tradition, many rising before dawn to participate. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome to contribute to this fun, nationwide community science project. Each individual count is performed in a circle 15 miles wide. The volunteers break up into small parties and follow assigned routes, counting every bird they see. Some people also watch feeders instead of following routes.  Interested volunteers must arrange in advance to participate.
