Free EQIT Course offered
January 2023

OUR WORLD— Beginning Monday, Jan. 9, the Huerfano-Las Animas (HuLA) Counties Early Childhood Advisory Council, Trinidad State Jr. College (TSJC) and Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), offer a no-cost professional development opportunity to the bi-county region. Expanding Quality in Infant Toddler Care (EQIT) Program is a FREE 16 week course offered to early childcare professionals, parent(s) and grandparents. This 3-hour course will be held on Monday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m. at the SCCOG Early Learning Center, 1225 Rosita Ave, Trinidad for 16 weeks. In addition to course work, it is recommended for students to receive at least two hours of coaching related to the course modules. In addition to the 48 hour direct classtime, each participate will be offered mentoring or coaching to enhance their knowledge of the EQIT program and their skills. Attendance is mandatory for completion of the program. Individuals completing the EQIT program will be awarded a certificate of completion; from the Colorado Department of Early Childhood. The EQIT program is a partial fulfillment of Colorado State licensing education requirements specific to Early Childhood Teacher, Center Teacher, Center Director and Family Child Care licenses. HUERFANO—The Huerfano County Sheriff Department would like to invite you to pick out a gift. You can bring your child here and have them choose a gift or the parent can come down and choose a gift so they can wrap it for under the tree. Gifts will be available until they are gone. Merry Christmas.

Deck The Halls Contest in Huerfano County

HUERFANO— The Bachman & Associates Deck the Halls Contest is back for the 2022 Holiday Season! We will be holding an old fashion home holiday lighting decoration contest throughout Huerfano County. Lets light up our community and bring people to our towns to shop local, spend the night, and enjoy our many delicious restaurants! Make your home a showplace of holiday lights and decorations for your chance to win a $300 grand prize, $200 second place, or $100 third place prize. This year Bachman & Associates will then make a donation matching each winning amount to the non-profit of the winners’ choice! Beginning December 19th, all homes will be listed in the voting poll, you may cast your vote (one per person) through December 29th. The winners will be announced December 30th at noon on our website along with our social media pages. There will be a map on our website of all homes entered in the contest for visitors and locals to drive and see the lights. Veterans Helping Veterans

HUERFANO  – The American Legion Post 16 has in place a program, Veterans Helping Veterans, with funds that are available to help Huerfano County Veterans with emergency expenses. Permitted uses of the funds include rent/housing, utility, food/gas, mental health therapy, car care/repair and other emergency expenses as deemed appropriate. There are limits to the amount and number of times assistance can be given. Proof of veteran status is required to receive assistance with these funds. Holiday Movie Screening at La Veta Library

LA VETA— Join us at the La Veta Library, Thursday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. for some holiday family fun! We will let those in attendance decide on which delightful holiday classic they would like to see. Get into the spirit and wear your Christmas Pjs and have the kids bring their pillow and blanket! Holiday refreshments will be served.

Huerfano Catholic Holiday Services Schedule

HUERFANO— Christmas Eve Masses will be held in Gardner at Sacred Heart on Saturday, Dec. 24 at 1 p.m. and in Walsenburg at St. Mary’s on Saturday, Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. Christmas Day services will be held in Walsenburg at 10:30 a.m. and in La Veta at Christ the King at 12:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve Mass will be held at Sacred Heart in Gardner at 4 p.m. and New Year Day Mass will be held in Walsenburg at 10:30 a.m. and La Veta at 12:30 p.m.

Cuchara Chapel Candlelight Service

CUCHARA— Join us on Saturday, Dec. 24, Christmas Eve at 4 p.m. at the Cuchara Chapel for our Candlelight Service.  Music will be preformed by Peggy Hoobler.

Praise Church Christmas Services

Christmas Day Pot Luck Dinner at Cuchara Mountain Mercantile

CUCHARA— Sunday, Dec. 25, 12 p.m. Join us Christmas Day for Turkey, ham, bread, cups, silverware and plates all provided – please bring a dish to share. Any side or dessert is wonderful! Come join in the food, music by MiDi, fun and games. All are welcome!

Diaper Bundle and gently used clothing distribution day rescheduled to Dec. 29

WALSENBURG— The HuLA Early Childhood Council is hosting  free diaper bundle and gently used clothing distribution event in Huerfano County scheduled for today, Dec 22 has been rescheduled due to the weather.  It will now be held on Thursday, Dec. 29 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center. A Community Holiday Concert with Willson and McKee

LA VETA— Thursday, Dec. 29, 7 p.m. at La Veta Mercantile. This free concert is a gift to the community, sponsored by Main Street Events, LLC. Willson and McKee (Ken Willson, Kim McKee) are local musicians who have been playing music for over 30 years.  They play a variety of instruments including the harp, banjo, guitar, and mountain dulcimer on which Kim has won national championships.  They will be playing seasonal as well as Celtic music.  We hope many people of all ages come out to enjoy the music and storytelling. The Waltons Christmas Concert

TRINIDAD— Friday, Dec. 23, 7 p.m. at First Christian Church, 200 South Walnut, Trinidad. Join us for an evening of fun and holiday cheer at our Christmas Concert featuring the Waltons! There will be a bake sale to follow the concert for any last minutes christmas treats. Home Lighting Tours

TRINIDAD— The city of Trinidad and the Tourism Board will be hosting the Annual Home Lighting Tours aboard the Trolley every Thursday – Sunday now through Dec. 23. Tours are at 5:30  and 7 p.m.   Trolley pick up is at 234 N. Commercial St. in front of Frank Images. Free cocoa, apple cider and gift bags for kids.

TRINIDAD— Trinidad and Las Animas County Chamber of Commerce presents Shop Local Shop Small.  Now through  Saturday, Dec. 24, participating businesses will be giving out tokens to costumers when they spend $25 or more on a given transaction. A Service of Lessons & Carols
