La Veta Writes – Monthly Writing Group
LA VETA— Are you a longtime writer, or are you interested in making writing a bigger part of your life and looking for support and encouragement? We’re a warm, welcoming crew, and we’d love to have you join us at the monthly gathering of La Veta Writes, Tuesday, Dec 19, 3 – 5 p.m. at The Parkside Art Gallery, 127 W Ryus Ave. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Every Christmas Story Ever Told and Then Some

SPLD Presents Jolabokaflod
WALSENBURG— Jolabokaflod an Icelandic Tradition, translated as The Christmas Book Flood, books are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and the rest of the night is spent reading and eating chocolate.  Each and every patron will be gifted a FREE BOOK, so that this tradition can come to life in your home.  Be sure to stop by for your book on Thursday, Dec. 21 st and Friday, Dec. 22nd at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg anytime during business hours.

Winter Solstice Community Bell Ringing
LA VETA— The sound of a bell welcomes peace, happiness and wisdom. Join us for La Veta’s Community Holiday Bell Ringing Blessing. On Thursday, Dec. 21 at 4:30 p.m., we’ll meet at the La Veta Town Park pavilion to begin the procession around town. If you like, wear festive or vintage clothing or simply cozy, warm layers as we ring out the old and chime in the new. Everyone is welcome to come celebrate miracles together! Cuchara Chapel Candlelight Christmas Eve Service
CUCHARA— Have you been to a Cuchara Chapel Service? If not, this is one you will not want to miss. An evening to gather with friends and family at the historical chapel for a candle lit service on Sunday, Dec. 24, 5 p.m. Don Pike will officiate & Peggy Hoobler will provide accompaniment. It’s the traditional Christmas Story with readings and hymns. Located at the corner of Oak and Highway 12 just South of the Cuchara Main Street Entrance.

TC’s Community Christmas Dinner

SPLD Presents Family Fun

Spanish Peaks Christmas Bird Count
LA VETA— The Arkansas Valley Audubon Society is please to sponsor the Spanish Peaks Christmas Bird Count on Friday, Dec. 29, 8 a.m. We will meet at the La Veta Town Park and bird in the morning until about noon when we will meet in Town at a local home for lunch and refreshments, bring your own sack lunch.   Intrepid birders will continue in the afternoon.   With the group will be experienced birders to help beginners in identifying the dozens of species expected to be seen.
The Spanish Peaks count has been going on for more than 30 years.
Participants need not be experienced – experts will be present.   More eyes looking about is always welcomed.  Bring binoculars if you have them, dress warmly even though vehicles will be nearby.   For questions call Tom at 742-3776 or  Polly at 742-3657.
Also, if you feed birds in your back yard, let us know what you are seeing.  The more the merrier

Silent Auction of School Related Items
WALSENBURG— Huerfano Re-1 School District would like to invite the public for a silent auction of many items currently in the Walsenburg Jr. Sr. HS (John Mall HS) that will not be moved to the new 7 – 12 building set to open on January 15, 2024. Check out the silent auction on Tuesday, Jan, 2, 2024, 8 – 11 a.m. and an open house at 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. (first come-first served)
Items to be sold: Items to include but not limited to: desks, chairs, tables, cabinets, filing cabinets, office supplies, kitchen equipment, athletic equipment, old uniforms, cleaning supplies, and a variety of other miscellaneous school items.

First Friday at Honeypot

“Welcome to Colorado” TPL Art Wall
TRINIDAD— Local artist Sheigla Hartman presents an exhibit she calls, “Welcome to Colorado”, now on view at the Trinidad Public Library’s Art Wall. Sheigla has shown her artwork at the library numerous times. December’s exhibit includes watercolors and watercolor collages, and pages from a sketchbook she created while in London. Sheigla began her formal studies in 1964, and during her long career has exhibited in prestigious institutions in London, Paris, Madrid and the United States. Her exhibit will be on display for the entire month of December.

Cup of Joe Peer to Peer Program
TRINIDAD— Every second and forth Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. Veterans are invited to Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center, 127 N. Commercial Street Suite 205 for a fresh cup of coffee. Diggin’ The New Year-Trail building workshop
TRINIDAD— Join us on Saturday, Dec. 30, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. stay for the whole day or just the morning session. Either way, don’t miss this chance to meet trails guru Tony Boone and bone up on trail skills in preparation for projects in 2024. We’ll cover design concepts, sustainable construction, and maintenance basics…with tools in hand!
Plus, you’ll be part of building the next trail section at Wormhole, a family-friendly skills loop close to the parking lot. Dress for the weather and bring gloves and water. And if it’s too snowy/muddy/cold, we’ll reschedule in 2024.

First Day Hike
TRINIDAD— On Monday, Jan 1, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. come join the Friends of Fishers Peak and Trinidad Lake State Parks and hike the Osita Point Trail – 8 miles
round trip. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available. This is a A Smithsonian Companion Event.

New Years Day Polar Plunge
