The Purgatory 4 Adventure Relay

COLFAX/LAS ANIMAS— The Purgatory 4 Adventure Relay, Saturday, Sept. 9 challenges competitors across the country to go halfway to hell and back.  Run through the rugged terrain of Sugarite Canyon State Park in Northeastern New Mexico, paddle a course on Lake Maloya at 7,500 feet, bike up to 8,500 feet over San Fransisco Pass and into Southern Colorado, and prove your prowess on a challenging shotgun shooting course at Trinidad State College’s Prator Gun Range. Camp Plushie at the library

WALSENBURG— On Thursday, Aug. 31, at 5 p.m. bring your whole family and your child’s favorite plushie friend to Camp Plushie at Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg!  We’ll have children’s camping activities, a sing-along, creepy camp stories, hotdogs, drinks, chips, and s’mores.  Plushies are invited to spend the weekend, and when picked up on Sunday the 3rd, a photo album with your plushie’s weekend adventures will come home with them!  This is a free event you won’t want to miss!

Wheelhouse Grand Opening

WALSENBURG—Join us for the grand opening of the Wheelhouse Community Makerspace, a vibrant hub for creativity and collaboration! This exciting event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 31, 5- 6:30 p.m. at 609 Main Street, Walsenburg. Take a tour of the space and equipment to see what it has to offer while envisioning what the space can become! See equipment in action along with product prototyping and promotional material examples. After, design the future makerspace of Huerfano County’s dreams.

Coal Camps, Cow Camps

WALSENBURG— Sandy Dolak with be at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg every Friday in Sept. from 1 – 3 p.m. to collect pictures and stories of the miners, ranchers and cowboys that shaped the legacy of Huerfano County. I can scan the pictures and hand them right back to you. This is such an important story to be told and will be presented to the community on November 4 th at the Walsenburg Community Center. First Friday Art Walk

LA VETA— It’s that time again for art, food and fun. La Veta’s last First Friday Art Walk for the season is Sept. 1 from 4:30 – 7 p.m. Gather friends, family and youth that love pondering inspiring art, or enjoy a solo excursion exploring shops and galleries. Weekend activities at Lathrop

WALSENBURG— The wonderful Walsenburg Dance Group, El Fandango, will perform at Lathrop State Park Friday, Sept. 1. 5:30 p.m. at the Amphitheater. El Fandango has played an integral cultural role in Walsenburg for over 70 years. Established in 1938, El Fandango is the oldest folkloric dance group in Colorado, and consists of students that range from pre-school through high school.
On Saturday, Sept. 2, 7 p.m. local guitar musician, Tuco Taveras, returns to play at Lathrop State Park Amphitheater. His music consists of Rockabilly sounds of the 60’s. Tuco has played open mics in Trinidad, Aguilar, Walsenburg and La Veta. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, 6 p.m. meet at the Visitor’s Center and spend some quality time with your dog in good company. Bring your dogs and walk with Trisha, one of our awesome, local volunteers, along the Cuerna Verde Trail. Go the full 2.8 miles or as far as you and
your dog want! Remember to bring a water bottle, Hat/Sunscreen, and bug spray. Meet at 6pm at the Lathrop State Park Visitor’s Center. As always park passes are required for all vehicles.

Fox Theatre outdoor movie

WALSENBURG— On Saturday, Sept. 2, sunset, join the Fox Theatre crew at Fiesta Park in Walsenburg for the Outdoor Movie showing “Hardball”. Bring a blanket and some bug spray and enjoy another movie under the stars.

Experimental Drawing and Painting at LVSA

LA VETA— The La Veta School of the Arts presents Peggy Zehring’s fun, abstract, experimental drawing and painting one week or two week class which will be happening at The La Veta School of the Arts in La Veta, CO from Tuesday, Sept. 5, through Saturday, Sept.9, and Monday, Sept. 11, through Friday, September 15, 2023  Draw with charcoal and then use the images you created spontaneously to unfold abstract paintings. You’ll also learn color mixing, recognizing and capitalizing on your own marks, compositional excellence and much more. SPLD presents Teen Pizza

WALSENBURG— Every Wednesday, 4 – 6 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for PIZZA! Teens are welcome to come hang with us afterschool every Wednesday, no catch, no demands just stop by and check out our library. We have Wii, computers, tablets, games, puzzles, music and of course BOOKS!

Burrito Dinner Fundraiser

WALSENBURG— SCCY will be having a burrito dinner on Wednesday, Sept. 6.  Pick up time is 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 513 Main Street.  Burrito dinners are $9.  Place your orders with Cathy Harmes at 719-989-0122.  Money raised from the burrito dinner goes directly to our local youth programs at SCCY.

Huerfano County Historical Society Meeting

WALSENBURG— The Huerfano County Historical Society will hold its next meeting on Thursday, Sept. 7,  4 p.m. at the Huerfano Heritage Center, 114 W. 6th St. All members and the public are invited to attend.

Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundations Annual Golf Tournament

WALSENBURG—The Mountain Mining Days festival will be Saturday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Live music, vendors, fun for the whole family. 9/11 Flag Presentation

WALSENBURG— Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aries and Aux 1187 is inviting the public to attend a flag presentation put on by the American Legion, on Monday, Sept. 11, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. at the Eagles Hall in Walsenburg. we hope that you can come and attend this special event to honor the fallen of 9/11.

Legal Self Help Clinic

WALSENBURG— On Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2 – 5 p.m. there will be a free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.   Volunteer attorneys will answer questions and explain the process and procedure for all areas of Colorado civil law, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders.

Huerfano Celebration at Fox Theatre

WALSENBURG— Warm Cookies of the Revolution and Huajatolla Heritage Foundation invite you to a great free event on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Fox Theatre in Walsenburg. Come celebrate what has been great about Huerfano County in the past; what is the hope for the future? WALSENBURG— The Friends of the Library for Spanish Peaks Library District is hosting a book sale on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 14 & 15, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 415 Walsen Avenue, Walsenburg. All proceeds from the book sale benefit library programs and library staff development.

Trinidad Lake State Park weekend activities

TRINIDAD— Friday, Sept. 1, 8 p.m  join us around the fire ring at the park amphitheater to get the latest in fishing activity, wildlife sightings and general information on hiking and biking in the area. The presentations will include an overview of the history and geology of the area and to make the most of your weekend outdoors. We will provide the fire so bring your marshmallows for a fun evening under the stars. This is the last program of the season.
Saturday, Sept. 2, 7 p.m.  at the amphitheater, Wilson & McKee will be playing “Rocky Mountain Celtic”
The combination of their Celtic heritage plus their Montana and Colorado roots gives audiences a distinctive musical experience.
Sunday, Sept. 3, 2 – 4 p.m. You are invited to participate in Trinidad Lake State Park’s first Adult Novice Archery Program. Participants will receive instruction and individual coaching on the finer points of archery safety and shooting a bow.   All equipment will be furnished. No personal equipment will be allowed. The program will be presented by park staff, trained volunteer coaches, and District Wildlife Manager Bob Holder.
Sunday, Sept. 3, 7 p.m. Join park staff in welcoming naturalist and environmental interpreter, Bob Kennemer.  Bob will focus on edible, medicinal, dangerous, and useful wild plants found in the Spanish Peaks region. Bob will be joined by Ranger/Interpreter Pat Patrick as they prepare some delicious wild treats in the Horno and the Dutch Oven for you to sample.

Trinidad Round Up Rodeo weekend events

LAS ANIMAS— Saturday, Sept. 2, 5 p.m. is beauties, beasts, beer and bands!  open barrel racing, open bull riding and free style bull fighting! After the arena action we are turning the dirt ground into a dance floor and the band WestRock will keep the party going for hours to come!
Sunday, Sept. 3, 11 a.m.  the park will be packed with kids activities, food and excitement for all ages! Rodeo kicks off in the afternoon with an OPEN Rodeo. Enjoy all your favorite rodeo events including junior bulls, mini bronc and the ever popular mutton busting! We are keeping the tradition of the Nickel Scramble, Stick Horse Race and adding this year A Calf Scramble for the kids!!
Monday, Sept. 4, we are keeping with tradition and hosting the Labor Day Parade in downtown Trinidad!  Kicking off as soon as the Labor Day Parade is over we will have the park packed once again full of kids activities, food and fun! All the must have Ranch Rodeo events including Wild Horse Racing, Ranch Broncs, Wild Cow Milking, Team Branding, Team Sorting, Team Doctoring, Trailer Loading, and Junior Team Sorting, Mutton Busting!

Labor Day Weekend Parade

Trail work Saturday

TRINIDAD— Trinidad Trails Alliance Second Saturday Trailwork will be working on the Boulevard & Riverwalk on Saturday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. We’ll meet at the flags near Safeway, bring gloves & water. Tools provided.
This month we’ll be working on the “Blue Heron” singletrack trail along the river in the Boulevard area as well as the “Trout Trail” leading from Safeway flags down to the river on the east side of the bridge. Expect general cleanup with lopping and raking, re-building the entrance to the singletrack trail, and trash pickup.

Trinidad Community Chorale

TRINIDAD— Come and join the weekly volunteer community choir. They have a lot of fun singing together every fall an spring. Toy Land Character Contest
 
RATON— The Raton Lions Club is having a Toy Land Character Contest.  We invite contestants to use their talent to create new characters that will be displayed on Apache Avenue on the way to City of Bethlehem. Everyone is welcome to participate in this contest; individuals, groups, businesses, clubs, etc.
Judging of the characters will be on November 4 at 2pm at Climax Canyon.  All characters made and donated will be accepted and displayed during the Christmas holiday.  We ask that you put your name and date on the back of the character.

Gate City Music Festival

RATON— The 8th Annual Gate City Music Festival will be held Labor Day weekend in Raton. On Saturday, Sept. 2 Historic First Street will be having a variety of music from 10 a.m. – Midnight. On Sunday, Sept. 3, 12 – 5 p.m. Gonzalo will be at Historic First Street and later in the evening The Shuler Theatre will have music starting at 7 p.m.

Supercross

Night Sky Viewing

CAPULIN— Saturday, Sept. 9, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Join us for an exceptional Dark Sky experience. Telescopes are provided to view the dark northeastern New Mexico skies. You will see planets, galaxies, nebula, and other amazing sights all with your own eyes. Capulin Volcano is at a higher altitude of over 6,000 feet. Nights can get chilly even in summer. A jacket, long pants, and closed toe shoes are recommended to attend a Dark Sky program. No reservations are needed. Dark Sky programs may be changed or cancelled due to weather. Capulin Volcano National Monument is located at 46 Volcano Hwy.

Astronomy Festival

CAPULIN— The Capulin Astronomy Festival will be held the weekend on Sept. 15 and 16. There will be programs in the evening with Park Rangers to learn about astronomy and check out the night skys with the telescope. Please dress accordingly as it can cool down quickly at night. Senior Week at the Pueblo Zoo

PUEBLO—   The annual Senior Week presented by Health Solutions is back and bigger than ever. Seniors 65+ receive free admission, along with their
caregivers, during Senior Week September 10-16. Each day, Monday – Friday, Senior Week will feature coffee and donuts. Guests are welcome to enjoy the zoo at their own pace. Wednesday’s Senior Safari is the big shindig that brings
