OUR WORLD— That’s right, we finally made the big move! We appreciate your patience as we are still getting things together. Our main office in Walsenburg is now open!  Internet and phones getting switched over has been another challenge, thank you for your patience. Our new address is 504 Main Street, Walsenburg.
Our office in Raton has also moved, just around the corner to 130 Park Ave, in the Center for Community Innovation.

LAS ANIMAS/HUERFANO— HULA Childhood Council is having a back to school giveaway. There will be FREE backpacks full of school supplies. Supplies include; notebooks, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, folders and more. Las Animas giveaway will be TODAY, Thursday, Aug. 17, 2 – 5 p.m. at the LAC Health Department, 412 Benedicta Ave. Huerfano will be on Friday, Aug. 18, 2 – 5 p.m. at the Health Department, 119 E. 5th St, Walsenburg.

Cuchara Foundation Digital Archive Project

CUCHARA— Do you love Cuchara and all the magic and history it holds?  Please share your memories and family history with us, by letting us scan and photograph your memorabilia. It’s FREE and all you need to do is be willing to look through your photo albums and drop off these precious time capsules to us. We will handle them with care as we create a digital version of your memories to be part of the archive for years to come.  In early December, we will make this Digital Archive website available to everyone, so the legacy of the Cuchara Valley can be shared around the world.
Please drop off photos, slides, posters, stickers, brochures, whatever you have as a Cuchara memory to H’s Place Gallery at 213 S Main St La Veta, Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. or at the Cuchara Library Branch in Cuchara Village on Thursdays. First Call for Coal Camps and Cow Camps project

WALSENBURG— Huajatolla Heritage Foundation with support from an Art in Society grant is working on collecting stories and pictures for the community event that will be held Saturday, Nov. 4th at the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg. Ballad of Gopher Gap

Weekend Activities at Lathrop State Park

WALSENBURG— Friday, Aug. 18, 10 a.m.  Want to spend a low key hour and get some exercise at the same time? Come on a hike along Horseshoe Lake, with a stop at the Wetlands Viewing Area. Use the Merlin App to look for birds, download before arrival. Meet at the Wetland Trailhead parking lot.
Friday, Aug. 18, 7 p.m. Local artist Gary Weston uses recycled and re-purposed objects to create sci-fi and steampunk themed sculptures, lamps and furniture. Join him at Lathrop Park’s Visitor center to learn something about his art and process.
Saturday Aug. 19, 1 p.m. Learn how to make Yucca cordage for a bracelet. This event is for people 8 years and above and will be held at the Visitor’s Center.
Saturday Aug. 19, 7 p.m. Join us at the Amphitheater. Robin Roberts part of the Sasquatch of the Rockies team will share the experiences and discoveries she and the team have made for the existence of Sasquatch.
Tuesday Aug. 22, 6 p.m. Want to spend quality time with your dog and share good company? Bring your dogs and walk with Trisha, one of our awesome, local volunteers. Meet at the Visitor’s Center and walk along the Cuerno Verde Trail. Remember to bring a water bottle, hat/sunscreen, and bug spray.

‘Crossroads: Changes in Rural America’

WALSENBURG— In conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution’s upcoming  “Crossroads: Changes in Rural America” show to be hosted by the Museum of Friends, a series of public programs and facilitated conversations is planned.
All are free events, with donations welcome.
Planned events include a screening and discussion of the film “The Five States of Colorado” at the Walsenburg Fox Theater on Friday, Aug. 18, 6 p.m., two Volunteer and Docent Training sessions on how to lead tours through this exhibit on Friday, Aug. 18th and Friday, Aug. 25, 3 p.m., and a School-Tour program available for youth K through 12 from Aug. 29, through Oct. 8. Additionally on Saturday, Sept. 16, Museum of Friends will host Story Share with CU Boulder Drama Department’s Professor Jim Walker and Improvisation Troupe. Culminating conversations will be held in the fall to explore the impact that the exhibit had on opening dialogue within the community.

Antiques at the Spanish Peaks Vintage Trailer Rally

LA VETA— The public is invited to tour the trailers during our open house on Saturday, Aug 19, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at no charge. Vote for your favorite trailer to earn a free raffle ticket. Wings on Wheels will be on site with wings and burgers for purchase. Then on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. line up on Main Street and give the vintage trailers a grand send off as they leave town.

CUCHARA— Join the La Veta Fire Protection District on Saturday, Aug. 19, 5 p.m. for an all you can eat taco party! Adult meals are $20 and kids are $10, kids under 5 are free. Fox Theatre Outdoor movie

WALSENBURG— On Saturday, Aug. 19, sunset, join the Fox Theatre crew at the Walsenburg Golf course for their outdoor movie. This month they will be showing Happy Gilmore. Bring a lawn chair and some bug spray and enjoy a beautiful evening under the starts while sharing laughs with others.

Mushrooms of the Spanish Peaks

LA VETA—  Local interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer will present a 90 minute lecture and slideshow on the mushrooms found in southern Sangre de Cristos and Spanish Peaks region. Topics include: how to ID mushrooms, equipment needed for harvesting mushrooms, the ethics and rules of harvesting mushrooms, various uses of mushrooms, how to locate mushrooms, and much more. Sample mushrooms will be on display along with suggested books. Handouts included. This program is wildly fun, entertaining, and educational. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2 p.m. at La Veta Public Library. Cost $10 per person, pay at the door.  Arrive early, space is limited.

Little Flamingo Story Time

WALSENBURG— Every Monday 10:30 – 11 a.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg Mrs. Flamingo will be featuring books, songs, felt storyboard, puppets and more!  Recommended ages 0-6yrs.

Laughter Yoga Monday Evenings

LA VETA— Join us Monday evenings throughout the summer for our free Laughter Yoga. Practiced regularly, fun, simple laughing exercises, combined with yogic breathing and stretching, helps support our physical well being, mental health and emotional responses to daily life. Bringing more oxygen to brain and body is important when living at higher elevation. Meet in the La Veta Town Park on West Ryus near the gazebo from 5 – 5:30 p.m. on Monday evenings throughout the summer. Truck unloading day at Dorcas Circle – Volunteers needed

WALSENBURG—  At Dorcas Circle, we serve Huerfano County through a food bank, clothing pantry, thrift store and more! As an all-volunteer organization, we depend on the support of our community to keep our services available to everyone.
Join us on Tuesday, August 22, 7:20 a.m. for our August Truck Day Unload. We will unpack the food delivered to us by Care and Share, bring it inside, sort it, and start to load up boxes and bags for the community. We can work with people of varying strengths and abilities to get everything done! The more help we have, the faster we can get the food ready to be handed out to our community!
If you choose to come, just make sure to bring weather-appropriate clothing and closed toed shoes. Volunteers(18+) can park in our parking lot on the south side of the building or in street parking on the opposite side of the street. Folks cannot park directly in front of our building on truck day, seeing as that is where cars line up to receive food.

Art of the Abuelos Class

WALSENBURG— Come get your sunflowers on!  Our monthly Art of the Abuelos Class, happening Thursday, Aug. 24, 1 – 3 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Jenn Dunn will be leading this fun painting class featuring mountains and sunflowers that are typical in August. The class is free, all materials provided refreshments included, please RSVP to Sandy J. at 719 989-8438, so we can get a canvas count.

Nothing’s For Free at Fox Theatre

WALSENBURG— Thursday, Aug. 24, 7 p.m. Nothing’s For Free- The History of Freeride Mountain Biking at the Fox Theatre in Walsenburg. Every sport has its Dog Town and Z Boys or Riding Giants. Nothing’s For Free is the real story of the birth and legacy of freeride mountain biking. Chronicling the blue-collar story and rise of a cult sport to a global phenomenon that put the race-driven sport of mountain biking on the map in the world of action sports and the mainstream.

Creative Booster painting workshop

LA VETA— A Creative Booster is a painting workshop sponsored by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council for people who want to let loose and have fun with watercolors. The class will be Saturday, Aug. 26, 9:30 a.m.  – 4:30 p.m. with an hour lunch break. Cherine Marie, instructor, will provide the supplies for a total of $75. Students keep the papers provided & little w/c holders.  A Colorado native, Cherine Marie-Kuster, creates free flowing color and imaginative, sometimes humorous, works depicting people and animals in a variety of mediums. Spanish Peaks Ranch Rodeo

LA VETA— Saturday, Aug. 26, 12 p.m. Open Ranch Rodeo, Youth Ranch Rodeo, and Muttin Bustin’ to Kick off the event! Gates open at 12:00PM, rodeo starts at 1 p.m. All teams must be entered by August 19th. This is a fun event for the entire family, don’t forget the sunscreen and bug spray. Fish Fry Fundraiser

LA VETA— On Saturday, Aug. 26, 1 – 4 p.m. the La Veta Village Auxiliary will host their 2nd annual Fish Fry Fundraiser. History of edible, medicinal, useful, and dangerous wild plants

LA VETA— Attention history buffs, outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and landowners. Local interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer is presenting a 90 minute program on The history of edible, medicinal, useful, and dangerous wild plants of Spanish Peaks Country on Saturday, Aug. 26, 1 p.m. Indigenous peoples, early Spanish, and European settlers relied on these plants. Huerfano County and south/central Colorado are home to hundreds of important and useful wild plants. This program will teach you about many of them, along with tips on how to ID plants, tools, and equipment needed and ethical foraging methods. Sponsored by Francisco Fort Museum, this event will be held at the La Veta Public Library at 310 S Main Street.

Wine Pairings with Harmonizing Hors D’oevres

LA VETA— A delightful way to spend Sunday, Aug. 27, 3 to 6 p.m.  Ed Donovan will introduce the wines we are sipping, and Go Ask Alys Catering will pair the wine with canapés that harmonize as a musical backdrop to Andy Hackbarth on guitar.  Who can resist?  The La Veta Mercantile hosts this inaugural benefit event for the Book Nook Renovation Project, launched by Friends of La Veta Library.  Tickets ($50 per person) available at The Book Nook or Artisans on Main.  Join us there!

Albert Anderson Clymer at The Parkside

LA VETA— on Sunday, Aug. 27, 4 – 7 p.m. at The Parkside Gallery, La Veta artist Albert Anderson Clymer will talk about his Artwork inspired by the historic Wounded Knee Massacre of December 29 1890. Many of his paintings refer to this tragedy. Clymer himself is of Native American descent, mainly Choctaw, which contributed to his inspiration. A raffle will be held with a couple of Clymers’ paintings as prizes. The proceeds will be donated to a charity that supports kids of the Pine Ridge Lakota Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Michael Steward will play the piano at this event; free wine and snacks will be served.
There will be a preceding online silent auction of Clymers’ Wounded Knee inspired paintings from August 15-26 (goto 32auctions.com/127); this is THE chance to acquire one of his beautiful paintings at a reduced price! Don’t miss this unique event!

SPLD presents Camp Plushie

WALSENBURG— On Thursday, Aug. 31, at 5 p.m. bring your whole family and your child’s favorite plushie friend to Camp Plushie at Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg!  We’ll have children’s camping activities, a sing-along, creepy camp stories, hotdogs, drinks, chips, and s’mores.  Plushies are invited to spend the weekend, and when picked up on Sunday the 3rd, a photo album with your plushie’s weekend adventures will come home with them!  This is a free event you won’t want to miss!

Free Sports Physical Clinics

TRINIDAD— Mt. San Rafael Hospital at 400 S. Benedicta Ave in Trinidad will be hosting a series of free sports physicals for local youth. Please bring all necessary forms completed and signed. Friday Night Live at Trinidad Lake State Park

TRINIDAD— Every Friday night at 8 p.m. the Trinidad Lake State Park Ranger/interpreter will present a program of interest to campers and the general public alike. Join us around the fire ring at the park amphitheater to get the latest in fishing activity, wildlife sightings and general information on hiking and biking in the area. The presentations will include an overview of the history and geology of the area and to make the most of your weekend outdoors. We will provide the fire so bring your marshmallows for a fun evening under the stars.

Skate Box Derby

TRINIDAD— The Official Street Race for the Skatebox Derby by Soco Clubhouse is on Saturday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m. The race starts at Nevada and Topeka and ends at Nevada and Colorado. Pro mountaineer Laura Clark at Trinidad Lake State Park
 
TRINIDAD— Saturday, Aug. 19, 7 p.m. Are you interested in hiking, or enjoying the outdoors, but want to learn how to do so safely?   Join us at the Visitor’s Center at Trinidad Lake State Park in welcoming Laura Clark, a professional mountaineer on how to stay safe in nature. Laura has taught outdoor survival skills for over 20 years and has summited over 500 peaks above 13,000’ in Colorado alone.  She’s the first woman to solo Colorado’s 14ers, as well as the 200 highest peaks in the state. Laura will talk about the basics of staying safe during outdoor activities.  She will cover topics such as the 10 essentials, how to prevent getting off trail, what to do if you find yourself lost, how to dress for the changing Colorado weather, how to effectively manage Colorado wildlife encounters, and how to safely enjoy the Colorado wilderness.   Laura will also share personal adventures from her book.

Low-cost spay and neuter clinic

TRINIDAD— PALS, Pet Assistance League, in Trinidad, is sponsoring a two day, low-cost spay and neuter clinic for male and female cats on Friday, Aug. 25 and Saturday, Aug. 26.  Vaccination (DAPP/FVCRP) and rabies are included.  Pre-registration and pre-payment of a $50 fee is required.  There is limited space available.  To register go to PALS Thrift Store, 500 W. Final Friday Mountain Bike meet-up

TRINIDAD— On Friday, Aug. 25, 6:30 p.m. Join the Final Friday Mountain Bike Meet-up at Fisher’s Peak State Park. Join Tarantula for a lap (or two or three) on Poison Canyon. 1 lap is about 5 miles and 500 ft. elevation change. We highly encourage carpooling from the shop! Helmets required (duh!)

Moonlight Kayaking

TRINIDAD— Wednesday, Aug. 30, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.  Kayak by moonlight on this Blue Moon at Trinidad Lake State Park South Shore, We’ll kayak and then get back together at the boat ramp for smores and refreshments. The event is FREE or $5 donation, you will need to have a parks pass.

Toy Land Character Contest
 
RATON— The Raton Lions Club is having a Toy Land Character Contest.  We invite contestants to use their talent to create new characters that will be displayed on Apache Avenue on the way to City of Bethlehem. Everyone is welcome to participate in this contest; individuals, groups, businesses, clubs, etc.
Judging of the characters will be on November 4 at 2pm at Climax Canyon.  All characters made and donated will be accepted and displayed during the Christmas holiday.  We ask that you put your name and date on the back of the character.

Cool Summer Nights Concert Series

ANGEL FIRE— Every Friday night, 5 p.m. through Sept. 9th the Cool Summer Nights Concert Series in Frontier Park will offer free live music from national and regional acts. Grab a lawn chair and bring your friends for a fun filled night of music.

Volcano Festival

CAPULIN— Come learn about the unique geology and volcanology of Capulin Volcano and the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field the weekend of Aug. 18th and 19th, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Two full days of volcano, geologic talks, face painting, demonstrations, special hikes and ranger programs, games, and prizes!

Reception honoring Howard Woodwort

RATON— The Raton Museum will be hosting a reception Honoring Howard Woodworth and also the closing of the current exhibit “New Mexico Impressions” by artist Bernard Sandoval. Recognizing Howard for his dedication and commitment to the history and arts in our community is something the Museum has wanted to do for a while.  “New Mexico Impressions” has been on display during the summer months and will close. EAGLE NEST— Saturday, Aug. 19 and Sunday Aug. 20 join Eagle Nest as we celebrate our 6th Annual EagleFest Music Festival. Enjoy a weekend of Hot Air Balloons, Music, your favorite vendors and much more at Enchanted Eagle Park. Both Saturday and Sunday morning (weather permitting) will be the ‘23 Eagle Nest BalloonFest. Springer youth play day

SPRINGER— Youth are invited to come play at the Colfax County Fairgrounds in Springer on Saturday, Aug. 19, entries open at 1 p.m. and the events start at 2 p.m. $5 per event or $50 for the annual family membership. Light concession will be available for purchase.

Night Sky Viewing

CAPULIN— On Saturday evenings around the new moon, join rangers as they use telescopes to explore the night sky. Join us Saturday, Aug. 19, 8 p.m. Wear layered warm clothing and follow the red lights from the visitor center to the viewing area. Capulin Volcano National Monument is located at 46 Volcano Hwy.

End of Summer block party

RATON— Come splash at the end of summer block party on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Raton, 236 S. 3rd St. The Colfax County Volunteer Firefighters will be providing the water for splashing plus food and games!
