Solar Eclipse

OUR WORLD— There will be a solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, from roughly 11:30 am-1:30 pm. We do not sit in the path of totality, so the sun will be only partially blocked out, but we can expect the light to dim and shadows to appear as little crescents.  Never look directly at the sun, even while it’s partially blocked by the sun.  You need to have special eclipse specific eyeware to avoid damaging your eyes.  Looking through a camera is not safe, and will hurt both the camera and your eyes if you do not have an eclipse filter on your lens.  Eclipse safety experts say legitimate eclipse glasses should block out ultraviolet light from the sun and nearly all visible light. When worn indoors, only very bright lights should be faintly visible – not household furniture or wallpaper.

Old eclipse glasses from the 2017 total solar eclipse or October’s “ring of fire” annular eclipse are safe to reuse, as long as they aren’t warped and don’t have scratches or holes.

Glasses should say they comply with ISO 12312-2 standards, though fake suppliers can also print this language on their products. NASA does not approve or certify eclipse glasses.

If you do not have an eclipse safe set of glasses, you can also create a pinhole projector by poking a hole in a piece of cardboard and holding it up to the light, then look down at the ground (not through the hole!) to watch the beam of light peeping through it slowly get a bite taken out of it.  Or just watch the shadows of the leaves change.
