SPLD Library Sign Art Contest

WALSENBURG–  The Spanish Peaks Public Library  is looking for one lucky student from Walsenburg Jr/Sr High School to design our new big library sign that will be placed in front of the library!  Look on our Facebook page for all the details.  Contest runs through the end of April.

Chamber meet and greet

WALSENBURG– The Huerfano County Chamber of Commerce will have a meet and greet at the Walsenburg Mercantile, 408 Russell St, Walsenburg on Thursday, April 25, 5 – 7 p.m.

Yoga classes – All levels

including beginners

WALSENBURG – Classes are held weekly on Thursday, 5:45 – 6:45 p.m. at Honeypot Warehouse, 111 W 10th St, Walsenburg with Ruth Heal RYT500 who has 15 years teaching experience. The gentle class will be taught in a way that respects individual needs, and students are encouraged to listen to their own bodies and minds to decide what feels right for them. All levels including complete beginners are welcome. There will be time after class to meet the teacher and other students. There is a gift of a yoga mat and bag for the first 10 people to attend 7 classes. This class is offered at NO CHARGE.

“Steel Magnolias” at FCPA

LA VETA–The Francisco Center for the Performing Arts, 127 W. Francisco St., La Veta presents “Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling. Friends don’t always hang out in bars–sometimes a beauty shop can work wonders. Showtimes are Thursday, April 25, 26  -27 at 7:00 pm. April 28 at 2:00 pm. Arbor Day in La Veta

LA VETA– Come celebrate Arbor Day with the La Veta Park and Tree Board. We will be planting our 2024 Arbor Day tree on the NW corner of S. Main St. and Grand, on Friday, April 26, 10 a.m. This event will be a great opportunity for anyone wanting to learn about trees in our community or wanting to contribute to the beauty in our town. Tools will be provided but you can bring your own if you prefer.

County Commissioner meet

and Greet

WALSENBURG– Please meet Mitchell Wardell, candidate for County Commissioner, District 1, at  Fat Fenders, 503 W. 7th Street in Walsenburg on Friday, April 26 at 5 p.m.  Order your food to support Fat Fenders!  Mitchell will talk a little bit about his plans and then take your questions.

Masonic Cemetery Cleanup

WALSENBURG– The clean up of the Walsenburg Masonic Cemetery at the end of West Elm (behind the library) was rescheduled after last week’s cold weather.  Come out from 10-12 on Saturday April 27 to help clean up the cemetery after a winter of being battered by high winds knocking down trees and branches and throwing trash everywhere.  Catered by GubGub’s and First Choice market.

2nd Annual Crown Lanes Relay for Life Tournament

WALSENBURG– Roar Relay for Life is having their 2nd Annual 9 Pin No Tap Tournament at Crown Lanes in Walsenburg on Saturday, April 27, 1 p.m. The cost is $20 per person, shoes included. Please Register beforehand by calling Kendra Doherty at 719-680-0693. This is a Relay for Life fundraiser, come bowl and fight back against cancer at the same time.

Pushing the Limits

LA VETA– The Spanish Peaks Arts Council invites everyone to see the new show at the SPACe Gallery in La Veta. There will be a reception this Saturday, April 27, 5 – 7 p.m for “Pushing the Limits”, an exhibit of amazingly creative works by area artists. Refreshments will be provided and there is no admission fee. The gallery is located at 132 W. Ryus, in the La Veta Town Park.

SPLD Presents Gardening 101

WALSENBURG– Join the Spanish Peaks Library, Sunday April 28, 1 p.m. for their monthly Gardening 101 class. Their topic this month is Lawn Alternatives.  Tired of the weeds that are in your yard?  Is a bluegrass lawn sucking all your water and time?  Look into other alternative ways to have a beautiful, bee and butterfly friendly lawns and also discuss hardscapes and xeriscape alternatives as well.  Don’t miss this informative program!

SPLD presents Teen Pizza

WALSENBURG— Every Wednesday, from 4 – 6 p.m. join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg for PIZZA, provided by GubGub’s Pizza and Ice Cream. Teens are welcome to come hang with us after school every Wednesday, no catch, no demands just stop by and check out our library. We have Wii, computers, tablets, games, pizza and fun!

HUERFANO– The Wheelhouse Retail Incubator and Community Makerspace has organized the

following events for Small Business Week. On Tuesday, April 30 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. there will be a social media 101 lunch and learn, facilitated by SBDC Pueblo, at The Spanish Peaks Library, 415 Walsen Ave., Walsenburg. Wednesday, May 1, 5 p.m. is the Entrepreneur Start-up Stories at Grandote Peaks Steakhouse and Bar in La Veta. Thursday, May 2, 4 p.m. Small Business Meetup at Crafty Canary Brewery, 107 E. 5 th St. and on Friday May 3, and Saturday May 4 there will be an incubator popup and Makerspace open house at the Wheelhouse, 609 Main St, 12 – 5 p.m.

Gravel Adventure Ride

HUERFANO– Created in partnership with the Huerfano County Tourism Board, join in on a community gravel bike ride to receive your Gravel Adventure Field Guide on Saturday, May 4th 8:45 a.m. This guide shows routes throughout the county and we will be hosting our first ride! Following the “Legends of Grandote Gravel Route” (39 miles). We will be pairing into small groups to set out to La Veta from the Walsenburg Mercantile and then return back. Mother’s Day Bake Sale

LA VETA– The Auxiliary of the La Veta Village is hosting a bake sale on Saturday, May 11 beginning at 10 a.m. This is absolutely the perfect opportunity to purchase something special and homemade for your mother, grandmother, aunt, or friend. A tasty goodie is always a perfect gift for someone you love and admire! The bake sale will be at the La Veta Public Library, 310 South Main Street, La Veta.

Trinidad Library April art wall 

TRINIDAD– During the month of April, the Trinidad Public Library is exhibiting on its Art Wall seven paintings by local artist Patrick Arguello. All the paintings depict flowers using various media, including watercolor, oil, acrylic and pencil. Patrick Arguello is a self taught artist who grew up in both Pueblo and Trinidad. “I was always fascinated by the diverse landscape that the two towns offered.”

The Trinidad Public Library’s Art Wall provides a venue for local artists to exhibit their work. One-month exhibits are available to anyone free of charge, and the library will promote the exhibition on their social media and website. Free Dump Day

TRINIDAD– Free Dump Day at Trinidad Landfill is on Saturday,  April 27,  8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Items that we normally don’t accept, Tires, and Electronics are not part of Free Dump Day and will be subject to normal pricing. All loads must be tied down or taped or you will be charged. The Trinidad Landfill is located at 2401 N State St, Trinidad.

Rails to Trails meet to get outside

TRINIDAD– Every year, the Rails to Trails Conservancy partners with a variety of organizations; trail managers, community groups, agencies, nonprofits, businesses, brands, clubs and beyond, to inspire people to get outside on this annual day to celebrate their local trails. Trinidad Trails Alliance is hosting a casual local meetup to get outside, meet like minded folks, and enjoy our local trails at the Wormhole on Saturday, April 27, 9 a.m. We’ll have some RTC swag, beverages, and snacks, and we’ll share some information about what TTA is working on this spring and summer.

American Legion Post 11

TRINIDAD– You’re invited to a day of everything plant-related trade free-for-all on Saturday, April 27, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.  at 818 W. Baca St, Trinidad. Bring your extra starts, divisions, houseplant cuttings, seeds, pots and what not to share with your fellow plant enthusiasts. Brought to you by the plant lovers from Purgatoire Valley Gardeners.

Earth Day Celebration

TRINIDAD– Join the Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Cedar Street Discovery Park, 34 W Cedar St, Trinidad. At 10 a.m. there will be a vermiculture workshop, 12 p.m. a composting workshop and plants for sale all day. There will also be free seeds, food, and a lot of fun! Hands-On History Family day

TRINIDAD– Learn all about some amazing animals during the Hands-On History Family day Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. We will have guest visitors (including some feathery and scaly friends!) to help us learn about nocturnal animals! We will also explore folklore related to these animals, their importance to various cultures and Southern Colorado history, and create some fun art! National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

TRINIDAD– On Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Trinidad Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will host DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at the Trinidad Police Department, 160 E First Street in Trinidad. DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. In partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed 8,950 tons of medication from circulation since its inception.

Kitten Shower

TRINIDAD– We’re expecting kittens, please help us prepare for the upcoming kitten season on Saturday, April 27, 12 – 3 p.m. at the animal shelter, 1921 East Main Street, Trinidad. Meet foster parents and learn about fostering kittens. Visit with kittens and watch bottle feeding demonstrations. Create a “paw painting” artwork with shelter kittens and bring naming ideas for or expected litters of kittens. This is just like a baby shower but way more fuzzy! Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to help out in our community and learn about what our animal shelter does.

TRINIDAD– The Century Club will be held on Sunday, April 28, 5 – 9 p.m. the Commons Space to Create. This dinner benefits the Holy Trinity Academy in Trinidad. The meal will be provided by Las Animas Grill, $75 per person, group and corporate tables available, silent auction also available to attendees.

64th Annual Hoehne FFA Mayfair

HOEHNE– With the warm, springtime weather comes that time of year for the 64th annual Hoehne FFA Mayfair! This year Mayfair is set for Saturday, May 11th at the Hoehne Ag Ed Classroom and Shop. This is located around the back of Hoehne School closest to the railroad tracks. This annual event is a fundraiser for the Hoehne FFA Chapter to be able to purchase shop materials, participate in FFA competitions and pay for FFA-related expenses. As in previous years, the day will start off with livestock shows for market and/or breeding, after the conclusion of the livestock shows, a brisket lunch will be served at the Hoehne Community Center. Blind Date with a Book

RATON– What is Blind Date with a Book? A “blind date with a book” is like a regular blind date where you don’t know what you’re getting until you get there. But, with books! The Librarians at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton have selected various items from our extensive collection and wrapped them up just for you! If you are feeling daring this is the program for you.

It’s a fun way to be introduced to new authors, books or DVDs that you may have judged by the cover or title. Try your luck and fall in love with reading again. Program runs now through the end of May.
