Stockgrowers meet

by Carol Dunn

WALSENBURG- Attendance was down slightly at the latest Huerfano Basin Stockgrowers Association meeting on November 6.  But Association President, Dave Stroh, isn’t too concerned.  “It’s a busy time for ranchers,” he said.  “There are vaccinations, weaning, preg tests.  You gather things up and move them somewhere else.”  Stroh related the story of an old rancher who won a million dollars.  Someone asked him what he would do with the money, and he drawled, “I guess I’ll just keep ranchin’ till it’s all gone.”

HBSA members are continuing their discussion about helping pay for a roof over the grandstands at the County fairgrounds in La Veta.  The members are interested in creating more activities at the fairgrounds and increasing the use of the facility.  HBSA is still seeking public input on the grandstands improvements and suggestions for activities.

HBSA is also planning a Christmas party, and tickets will be available to the public.  Details about the party will be announced soon.  Stroh said the Association is hopeful that membership can grow and family participation will increase.

HBSA meetings are held at the Walsenburg Community Center.  The dates of the 2009 meetings and speakers will be announced in advance.  The public is always welcome to attend.
