Tied with a bow and ready to go for the Sangre De Cristo Youth Center in Walsenburg are 65 fleece blankets for needy kids ages 6-19 in time for Christmas. The local Scrappy Ladies Quilt Guild made 78 fleece blankets this year and while most are going to the youth center, the rest are being split between the Mt. Rose Hospice in Trinidad and the Veterans Center in Walsenburg. The guild originated in Walsenburg with Barb Beckner, in charge of charities and the connection to the youth center, along with Jeanette Hanson, Janet Behringer and Tomi Lard. Scrappy Ladies has been donating items such as: quilts, pillowcases, stuffed animals, backpacks, ditty bags, hats, gloves, scarves and quillows for Christmas for the past 7-8 years.

Gary M. Vezzani was elected Walsenburg’s mayor in Tuesday’s special mayoral election/recall vote. Preliminary results announced Tuesday night show that both Nick Vigil in Ward
