Regional high school sports recap: Dec. 4-10

Basketball heats up in second week of the season

High school basketball teams from throughout the region had packed schedules last week, with both Primero’s girls and boys teams and the Kim/Branson Lady Mustangs scoring big wins.

Girls Basketball

Hoehne
The 3-0 Hoehne Lady Farmers traveled to Fort Collins on Dec. 8 to challenge the 0-0 Heritage Christian Lady Eagles. It was a nailbiter, but a strong fourth quarter for Heritage Christian ended in a 45-41 loss of Hoehne. Junior Alessa Cantoria led the Lady Farmers with 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while seniors Janae Ramos and Kaylah Crosson each snagged an additional eight points.
The Lady Farmers were back on the bus on Dec. 9 as they took on the 1-3 Pagosa Springs Lady Pirates. It was a close first quarter, but Pagosa Springs took a definitive lead in the second and never looked back, handing Hoehne a 51-36 defeat.

Trinidad
The 2-1 Trinidad Lady Miners traveled to Clayton on Dec. 6 to battle it out against the 1-0 Lady Yellowjackets in the Cowbell Tournament, falling 53-34. Senior Jesse Gegelman led the Lady Miners in scoring with 14 points, while sophomore Danica Shipley earned eight points and freshman Maya Morales six rebounds.

Primero
On Dec. 8, the 1-2 Primero Lady Bulldogs traveled to Creede to challenge the 1-3 Lady Miners. The Lady Bulldogs established an early lead that the Lady Miners couldn’t overcome, resulting in a 39-36 victory for Primero.

Kim/Branson
The 1-2 Kim/Branson Lady Mustangs had back-to-back basketball games last week, first trekking to Walsh to take on the 0-1 Lady Eagles on Dec. 8. The Lady Mustangs came out swinging, establishing a 19-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and maintaining that momentum into a 40-21 victory.
On Dec. 9, the Lady Mustangs played host to the 0-2 Sierra Grande Lady Panthers, where they scored a 42-27 win.

La Veta
The 1-1 La Veta Lady Redhawks were on the road on Dec. 8 to face off against the 0-1 Las Animas Lady Trojans, where they picked up a tough 60-17 loss. Junior Aspen Autry scored 10 points in the matchup, and earned four rebounds, one steal, and one block. Sophomore Jaiden Goemmer was good for four points, 11 rebounds, three steals and a block.

Walsenburg
The 1-2 Walsenburg Lady Panthers hosted the 1-0 Crowley County Lady Chargers on Dec. 7. The Lady Panthers had a strong fourth quarter, but the comeback effort wasn’t enough, and Walsenburg fell 42-16.

Raton
The 0-3 Raton Lady Tigers traveled to Cimarron on Dec. 5 to play against the 1-1 Lady Rams. It was a tough matchup for the Lady Tigers, who fell 51-9.

Cimarron
The 1-1 Cimarron Lady Rams hosted the 0-3 Raton Lady Tigers on Dec. 5, adding another win to their record with a 51-9 victory.

Springer
On Dec. 6, the 2-1 Springer Lady Red Devils took on the 2-1 Des Moines Lady Demons at home, where the Springer squad easily cruised into a 53-35 victory.
The Lady Red Devils faced off against the 3-1 Clayton Lady Hornets in some tournament action on Dec. 8, where they achieved a 61-32 win.
This advanced the Lady Red Devils to the championship round of the tournament on Dec. 9, where they faced off against the 5-0 Roy/Mosquero Lady Blue. The Lady Blue kept their winning streak alive, handing the Lady Red Devils a 48-37 loss.

Boys Basketball

Hoehne
The 2-1 Hoehne Farmers had two games last week, first traveling to take on the 0-1 Sedgwick County Cougars on Dec. 8. Throughout the matchup, the Farmers struggled to match the pace of the Cougars, ultimately falling to Sedgwick County 61-34. Sophomores Jacob Magninat and Jayson Guzzo led the Farmers in scoring with seven points apiece.
On Dec. 9, the Farmers fell 51-36 the 1-1 Heritage Christian Eagles.

Primero
The 1-2 Primero Bulldogs hit the road on Dec. 8, traveling to Creede to challenge the 1-3 Miners. The Bulldogs picked up a big win, besting the Miners 73-46.

Kim/Branson
The 1-2 Kim/Branson Mustangs hit the road on Dec. 8 for a matchup against the 1-0 Walsh Eagles. While Kim/Branson took an early lead, Walsh had a spectacular second quarter, leading to a 50-41 defeat for the Mustangs. Senior Brock Doherty led Kim/Branson with nine points, followed by junior Kolter Cranson and freshman Trotor Watkins who each scored another eight.
On Dec. 9, the Mustangs were back on the bus, traveling to Sierra Grande to challenge the 2-1 Panthers. Kim/Branson again took an early lead in the game, but couldn’t hold on to it, with Sierra Grande besting the Mustangs 48-32.

La Veta
The 1-1 La Veta Redhawks enjoyed some tournament action last week, first taking on the 2-0 Las Animas Trojans on Dec. 8. La Veta couldn’t shut down Las Animas’s offense, resulting in a 61-31 loss for the Redhawks. Despite the loss, senior Trey Medina made a strong showing for La Veta with 14 points, two rebounds, and five steals. Junior Tristan Musgrave picked up seven points, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
On Dec. 9, the Redhawks took on the 0-2 Manzanola Bobcats, besting them 74-39.

Walsenburg
The 2-1 Walsenburg Panthers hosted the 0-0 Crowley County Chargers on Dec. 7. Crowley County came out swinging, defeating Walsenburg 68-18.

Raton
The 2-1 Raton Tigers hosted the 0-0 Maxwell Bears on Dec. 6. In the nailbiter, the Tigers edged past the Bears to a 47-44 win.
The Tigers challenged the 3-0 Roy/Mosquero Blue on Dec. 9, earning a 50-40 win.

Cimarron
The 1-0 Cimarron Rams played host to the 1-2 Springer Red Devils on Dec. 6, besting their rivals 77-29.
The Rams finished out the weekend on Dec. 9 with a matchup against the 5-0 Des Moines Demons in the championship round of the Cowbell Tournament, falling to the Demons 63-48.

Springer
The 1-2 Springer Red Devils hosted the 1-0 Cimarron Rams on Dec. 6, falling 77-29.

Wagon Mound
The 0-1 Wagon Mound Trojans traveled to Des Moines on Dec. 5 to take on the 2-0 Demons, falling 62-16.
On Dec. 7, the Trojans challenged the 2-3 Clayton Yellowjackets in some tournament action, where Wagon Mound fell 47-19.
