Redskins at District… maybe?

LA VETA- The Redskins finished their regular season with a pair of victories over the Center Vikings in three games and the Antonito Trojans in four.  The victories gave the Skins a second-place finish in the Southern Peaks League with an 8-2 record and 15-6 overall.

In the game against Center, Shelby Morgan had 9 kills and Jacey Day had 6.  Cara Campbell had 14 assists while Day had 12.  According to Coach Lessar, “the girls played well defensively in the last half of the second set.  We were able to get into the rhythm.”  Morgan sat out the third game with a twisted ankle and did not play the following Saturday.

On Sat. Oct. 24, the hometown girls did not disappoint, winning in solid fashion: 25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23.  Day was moved to the outside to compensate for  the loss of Morgan, and Campbell played a full rotation at the setting position.  Betsy Trenckmann had 9 kills and 8 points on the serve.  Christina Koutnik had 17 digs in the match, and Campbell had 33 assists.  Sami Willhoite served 10 straight points in the first game and 7 points in game 3.  She also had 6 kills and did a nice job of controlling the blocking in the front row.

This was the second time the Skins defeated the Trojans this season.  Coach Lesser said, “Antonito hasn’t won much this year, but I have a lot of respect for their program.  They serve and pass very well and exhibit great sportsmanship.”

La Veta played the Del Norte Tigers last night in a pigtail game.  The results of the game were not available by press time.  Visit the Journal web site today to see if they will play and move on to the district competition.  Tentatively, if they won, their first game in Center will be at 9 am Friday.

When asked what the team will do to prepare for the tournament, Lesser stated, “A team that is fundamentally strong is always a threat and our passing wasn’t as good as it needs to be in order for us to completely control the match.  Fundamentals are essential in all aspects of athletics and we will be working on serving and passing this week as we prepare for the district tournament.”
