Redskin boys hit third win of the year

by David High

LA VETA — The La Veta boys hosted the Des Moines Demons at the Roger Brunelli Gym on January 23. Unfortunately, they quickly fell behind in the first eight minutes of action to the tune of 12 points, at 16-4. It ended up being a tough offensive contest for the hometown boys as they had a difficult time finding the bottom of the net throughout the game. The Demons didn’t have that problem, however, and went on to get the win, with the final 46-15.

On Thursday, the Custer County Bobcats came calling and, after a close first half at 20-19, pulled away for the 43-32 win. Alex Mondragon led La Veta with 15 points on the night.

Moffat was next for the busy Redskins on Friday evening. La Veta was ready for their visitors this time and took an 18-14 lead early on. The second quarter was all La Veta, with the team extending their lead to 35-25. The La Veta five took care of business in the last half, winning the conference battle 66-51.

Eric Morgan had a game-high 19 points; Mondragon added 18 points, Carson Miller contributed another 10, and Ty Warren came in with 10 points of his own in the win over the Cowboys.

The last of four games for the week was an away game against the Creede Miners Saturday afternoon. The Miners’ high-powered offense wasted little time and gained a 47-19 lead at the break. The second half was more of the same, with the final a lopsided 85-43 loss for the Redskins.

Warren led the Redskin scorers against Creede with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
