205 athletes from 32 schools take part in
final sporting event at the old John Mall gym

 by Mark Craddock

A total of 205 competitors from 32 schools descended on the old John Mall High gymnasium Dec. 16 for the annual Pete and Ina Gomez Invitational wrestling tournament. Las Saturday marked the last time the tourney, which has been an annual early-season event since 1971, was hosted at the old gym, before the early-January opening of the new Walsenburg Jr./Sr. High building next door.Among the big local finishers in the tourney were Trinidad’s Eddie Bowman, in first place at 138 lbs.; Walsenburg’s Giovonni Aldretti, first-place at 144 lbs.; and Walsenburg’s Taylor Torres and Josiah Espinosa, who battled each other in the 126 lb. championship. Torres won and Espinoza finished second. In his decades of involvement in Walsenburg wrestling, as a wrestler, then a teacher and wrestling coach, now as an organizer of wrestling events, Pete has seen great competitors come and go.And he has seen schools come and go as well. His namesake tourney began in the old Walsenburg High, now the Spanish Peaks Library. It moved, along with the students, to the then-new John Mall High in 1977, and will be held next year at the now-new Walsenburg Jr./Sr. High. When the last pin was logged, the last hands shaken and awards presented; when the mats were swept and rolled, the organizers turned the lights out – for the last time. Here is a breakdown of the final results:
